Welcome Back Snowbirds! Property of:
A large majority of people in the United States will be feasting at the Thanksgiving table on November 25, shamelessly engorging themselves on roast turkey and myriad other tasty dishes. Canadians observed their Thanksgiving on October 11, and most were likely served some of the big birds as well. Turkeys are one of the most popular of the large fowl in America, but there are also other big birds worthy of note; some that are great eating, and others... not so much! • Wild turkeys are native to the Eastern United States and Northern Mexico. They were first domesticated by the Aztecs in Mexico. Related to pheasants, turkeys are the only breed of poultry native to the western hemisphere. Wild turkeys run up to 25 miles per hour and can fly short distances at speeds up to 55 miles mph.

Glen Travis Campbell was born April 22, 1936 in Billstown, Arkansas, a tiny community of less than one hundred residents. As one of twelve children in a sharecropper family of Scottish ancestory, he got his musical start when his father gave him a $5 Sears & Roebuck guitar. At the teaching of his Uncle Boo, he conquered the instrument without learning to read music by age ten. • The California condor, is the largest flying bird in North America. In the 1980s, the California Condor Recovery Program started with a small group of 27 condors, captured to prevent their extinction. The endangered species now has over 300 birds in the wild. A unique feature of these large birds is that they have nails similar to toenails instead of claws or talons. • California condors are vultures -- and definitely one of the birds we don’t want to eat! Vulture is a word that most people associate with “yuck!” These scavanging creatures feed on carrion (dead animal carcasses), and are considered part of “nature’s clean-up crew.” These amazing birds can fly up to 55 miles per hour and have been known to climb to altitudes of 15,000 feet! The birds also have considerable longevity, with a lifespan of up to 50 years.

Texas, and they are still grown mostly in the South. Southern orchards produce around 250 million pounds annually, mostly sold as shelled nuts.
The term “as American as apple pie” has been around for years and stirs patriotism in all Americans. However, pies, even apple pies, have been around longer than the U.S.A. has been a country. • The first known pie recipe was for a rye-crusted, goat cheese and honey pie and was published by a Roman, Cato the Censor, who lived from 234-149 B.C. Early pies were mostly meat pies (spelled “pyes” in older writings), and the crusts were mainly for holding the filling and were usually not eaten. Pie crusts were called coffins (or “coffyns”) until the American Revolution, when the term pie crust came about.
• At pie festivals and in many polls taken, the favorite pie almost always turns out to be apple. According to a survey conducted by Crisco in 2008, apple pie is No. 1, with pumpkin coming in second. Apple pie has been the most popular pie in England for hundreds of years. The first apple tree (that we know of) planted in the United States was planted in 1629 by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Now apples are grown in many states and also in Canada. ®

• Many pies are loved and eaten year round, but the pumpkin pie is a favorite for Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meals in the United States and Canada. A version of pumpkin pie was first made by colonists who cut off the tops of pumpkins, removed the seeds and filled the shells with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkins were then baked in hot ashes.

Q:
Last season on “The Mentalist,” there was an actor on one of the episodes playing the role of a billionaire who really resembles Kevin Spacey. Who is he, and what else can I see him in? -- Jay F., via e-mail
A:
Q: I think I’ve missed a couple of episodes
You’re thinking of 43-year-old Canadian actor Currie Graham. Most recently he co-starred with Jaime Pressly in “Smoke Screen,” a made-for-TV movie based on the Sandra Brown novel. The movie premieres Sunday night, Nov. 21, on the Lifetime Movie Network. ***
Q:
Sean Murray of “NCIS” sure has lost a lot of weight. Is he ill or on some sort of a diet? -- Mrs. G., Venice, Fla.
of “Lone Star” on Fox. Is it coming back on? -- Mike M., Newark, Ohio
I fell in love with the ABC summer series “The Gates.” Do you have any idea if it will be brought back, maybe as a midseason replacement? I really need to know what happens! -- Karen D. in Virginia
A:
“Lone Star” was the first casualty of the fall 2010 season. Despite rave reviews and being the critics’ darling, low ratings forced Fox to pull the series after only two episodes. And the same fate seems to have befallen the summer series “The Gates” (which was one of my favorite Frank Grillo shows of the year) and “Scoundrels.” On Oct. 15, “The Gates” star Frank Grillo tweeted: “Don’t shoot the messenger ... “The Gates” is officially canceled. I knew my source was right. Thanks to all of you for supporting us.” As of this writing, ABC’s “My Generation” and NBC’s “Outlaw” (starring Jimmy Smits) also are kaput. On the cusp of cancellation -- however, they still could be saved -- are “Undercovers” and “Running Wilde.” ***
Q:
A:
Sean, who turns 33 on Nov. 15, explained via his Twitter account that his weight loss came from “14 months of no alcohol and almost no sugar. Ate strictly organic. ... You can actually see me gradually lose the weight over the 24 (episodes) of Season 7; a pound every week or two.” ***
Q:
I enjoy watching classic black-and-white movies on television. What does “RKO” stand for in the RKO Pictures logo? -- Tashi G., Dearborn, Mich.

RECIPES ON THE GO. I like to keep recipes for quick, simple meals on index cards in the glove compartment in my car. Those metal snap hair clips make great, inexpensive bookmarks. NO-FRIZZ CURLS. I have curly hair, but I don’t buy gel for curly hair. Instead, I apply regular conditioner after shampooing, but I don’t rinse it out. Then I just towel-dry before I blow-dry my hair and scrunch it without a brush. Some frizz may appear again, but I simply place a small amount of conditioner in my hand and work it through the frizzy areas. My hair stays soft and is not sticky. -- Marianne R., Pennsylvania FREEZE IMPORTANT PAPERS. I keep my important papers in a heavy freezer bag in the deep freezer. I have heard that in a fire, the inside of the freezer doesn’t burn easily. Besides, the bank said there is a waiting list as long as my arm for safedeposit boxes, and the refrigerator is free. -- Jill N., Florida HAIRCUT TRICK. Before cutting your child’s (or spouse’s) hair, rub down his/her neck with cornstarch. This will keep the cut pieces of hair from sticking to his/her skin and causing it to itch. My son used to cry as if he were dying whenever I cut his hair. Now haircuts are tears-free. -- Jan J., Alabama DOUBLE THE FROSTING. When you buy a container of cake frosting, whipping it with your mixer for a few minutes will fluff it up. You can double it in size and frost more cakes or cupcakes with the same amount. A nutritional benefit to this is that you’ll eat less sugar and fewer calories per serving, and it tastes every bit as good. -- Sue K., North Carolina CABINET MAKEOVER. Wish you had the funds to update your kitchen? Instead of installing brand-new cabinets, which is an expensive re-do,
save some money by switching out the old handles or knobs for brand-new ones. They’ll give the whole room a new look. -- Grace M., Michigan CHILL THE WRAP. To make your plastic wrap easy to control, store it in your refrigerator. It won’t be so prone to stick to itself. -- Marsha H., Kentucky Would you like to send a tip to Mary? In 2005, the American Film Institute debuted its 100 Series, part of which heralded the Top 100 quotations from American cinema. “If you build it, they will come,” from the 1989 film “Field of Dreams,” made the cut. Most of us know the quote as, “If you build it, they will come.” But in both the film and the novel it is based on, W.P. Kinsella’s “Shoeless Joe,” it is “he” and not “they” who will be coming. And its altered form suits human nature just fine, particularly human dog owner nature. If you love them, they will obey. If you feed them, they will listen. If you bring them into your home, they will do whatever it is you ask of them, even if you ask them in a language they don’t understand. These are statements of blind faith. Dedicated dog lovers seemingly extend this benefit of the doubt to any and every dog, making the collective “they” more reflective of our faith in the species than the singular “he.” Either way, it’s just not true. Frustrated dog owners lament, “He wants to do what he wants to do!” Well, yeah. Good-hearted people truly believe that if you love a dog and feed a dog and offer a dog a comfy place next to you in the “big person” bed, the dog will crumble, will cave in regard to his own instincts, will knock it off with the chewing and the digging and HRS: 1 MIN: 45 the fence jumping and the puddles. But alas, a dog is a dog -- and thank goodness for AdVenture Media that! Understanding your dog’s inherent dogness, knowing that his view of the world from two or three feet off the ground is much different from ours, is, to quote another from AFI’s Top 100, “the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Humphrey Bogart, who famously delivered the line above in the final scene of “Casablanca,” knew a little something about the benefits of dog training. In the 1941 film “High Sierra,” Bogie’s character’s dog, “Pard,” is played by Bogie’s real-life dog, Zero. Who among us could call on our dogs to perform on command amid the chaos of a film set? The answer: Sylvester Stallone. “Butkus,” Rocky Balboa’s dog in the 1976 Oscar-winning “Rocky,” was played by Stallone’s real-life Butkus. You might question the name, but you can’t question the dedication to training.

lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz
Osteoporosis Drug Has Problematic Side Effects For millions of women, and more recently men, the use of medications to treat osteoporosis has led to fewer fractures and less disability with advancing age. The most commonly employed medications are bisphosphonates, which have been shown to be highly effective in building bone mass and strength. Unfortunately, bisphosphonates have been associated with some very serious side effects. To understand how bisphosphonates work, we must first understand normal bone metabolism. Adult bones are similar to a large tree -- tough, sturdy and seemingly inactive. But look past the exterior, and you will find that bones are vibrant, living, ever-changing parts of the human body. Throughout life, bone is continually being remodeled. Broken down by cells called osteoclasts, bones are simultaneously being rebuilt by cells called osteoblasts. This combined production and destruction determines the strength and resilience of our bones. If there is either decreased production or increased destruction of bone, osteoporosis or conditions like it will develop. In the most common form of osteoporosis -- found in post-menopausal women and in men over the age of 70 -- the major cause is decreased production caused by declines in hormones, inadequate calcium or vitamin D, and inadequate exercise. Osteoporosis can be diagnosed clinically by the development of a fracture or through screening with a bone density or DEXA scan. When bone loss is minimal, further decrease can be prevented by diet and exercise. But if severe, treatment is warranted and bisphosphonates are the drugs of choice. These drugs build bone strength by inhibiting osteoclasts that cause the breakdown of bone, thus altering the delicate balance of bone destruction and production. With increased production comes greater bone strength. Recently, thousands of patients have spontaneously stopped taking bisphosphonates due to reports of scary side effects. The most frequent side effect is indigestion, heartburn and damage to the esophagus. To prevent this from happening, the drug must be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, and the patient should not lie down or eat for 30 to 60 minutes. More rarely, abdominal pain and diarrhea have been reported. The drug occasionally cannot be tolerated because of fatigue or muscle and joint pain. Perhaps, the most serious side effect of bisphosphonates is a condition called osteonecrosis of the jaw. Here, death of bone in the jaw can occur after surgery, leading to pain, swelling, infection and exposure of bone. The condition is quite common in patients who receive frequent injections of bisphosphonates to treat cancer that has spread to the bone. Old Folks’ Demands Lead to Young Reader’s Concerns Q:
I am a 29-year-old married woman who reads your column. You seem to get an over whelming number of letters from senior citizens with one common theme: “We deser ve more money!” My husband and I must be paying double or triple the amount of taxes these people paid into the system. And we don’t expect to get anything out of it. Yet these people who contributed relatively small amounts into Social Security just cr y out for “more, more, more!” I wonder if they worr y about the burden this is placing on their children and grandchildren. I’m not even sure my husband and I can afford to have the children we’ve always wanted because we’re going to be spending so much of our income to support these older people. I enjoy reading your column, but it makes me so pessimistic. Do we have any hope for our future?
A:
First of all, thanks for reading the column. You must be among my youngest readers! And thank you so much for your letter. You’ve voiced the often unheard concerns that many young people feel about Social Security. I have also been surprised by the number of emails I’ve been receiving from older folks griping about not getting enough money from Social Security, and I’ve wanted to write about this issue for some time. But your e-mail voiced these concerns more dramatically than I ever could have done. You are justified to be despondent about the avarice of some older folks. But I think you are wrong about the hopelessness for the future. I’ll try to explain. I probably get a couple dozen e-mails each day from folks complaining that they’re being “cheated” out of Social Security benefits -- because they won’t be getting a cost-of-living increase next year, they’re getting another pension that reduces their Social Security benefit, their neighbor gets more than they do, and on and on. Of course, some of these people have legitimate problems with the amount of their Social Security check. But most people just want more money. As you implied in your letter, many of these folks simply don’t realize what a great deal Social Security has been for them. Almost all of the older elderly (folks in their 70s, 80s and above) have made a killing from Social Security. They got back in benefits everything they put into the system in just a couple years. And everything they’ve received for years on top of that is just icing on the cake. Icing paid for by folks like you! Baby boomers (people my age) will not do quite as well as these older folks. But we’re going to do well enough under Social Security that we should quit griping and just be thankful we’re getting the kind of benefits we are. We’re not getting rich off of Social Security (we weren’t supposed to), but especially if we did the right amount of financial planning, our Social Security checks combined with other pensions, savings For andmore investments will teasers log on to keep us quite comfortable in retirement. www.TriviaGuy.com

• On Nov. 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of the most famous speeches in American history at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pa. Using just 272 words, Lincoln brilliantly and movingly articulated the meaning of the conflict for a war-weary public. His address lasted just two minutes. • On Nov. 18, 1883, American and Canadian railroads begin using four continental time zones to end the confusion of dealing with thousands of local times. However, it was not until 1918 that Congress officially adopted the railroad time zones and put them under the supervision of the Interstate Commerce Commission. • On Nov. 21, 1927, Time magazine puts the Holland Tunnel on its cover. The tunnel, which runs under the Hudson River between New York City and Jersey City, N.J., had opened to traffic the week before, at the stroke of midnight on Nov. 13. The toll was 50 cents per car in both directions. • On Nov. 16, 1945, the United States ships 88 German scientists to America to assist the nation in its production of rocket technology. Most of these “volunteers” had served under the Nazi regime. The voluntary nature of the scheme was somewhat undercut by the admission that the scientists were in “protective custody.” • On Nov. 20, 1955, Bo Diddley introduced himself and his namesake beat to the world with his television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Sullivan was so furious with Diddley for not opening with Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “Sixteen Tons” that Sullivan banned him from future appearances on his show. • On Nov. 15, 1965, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, 28-year-old Californian Craig Breedlove sets a new land-speed record -600.601 mph. His car, the Spirit of America, cost $250,000 and was powered by a surplus engine from a Navy jet. • On Nov. 17, 1973, in the midst of the Watergate scandal that eventually ended his presidency, President Richard Nixon tells a group of newspaper editors that he is “not a crook.” After a relentless federal investigation, Nixon resigned in August HRS: MIN: 30 1974.

Victorian Side Chairs Feature the Classic Eastlake Style Q:
My elderly mother and dad acquired the pictured chair. It is part of a pair and originally belonged to a widow with whom my parents became acquainted after they purchased a small farm next to her huckleberr y patch. The chairs were supposedly handmade in the late 1800s to early 1900s by a local furniture maker. Do you know whether they may have any value? Would it be worth the expense of having the cane seat replaced in one of the chairs? If so, would it possibly diminish its antique value?
A: Your side chairs are examples of the Vic-
torian Eastlake period of design. The spindled back, demi arms, round caned seat, turned legs and two front stretchers are all characteristics of Eastlake furniture. These chairs were usually used in parlors or dining rooms. Having the original seat re-caned would not diminish its value. I would estimate your chairs were made around 1875 and would probably be worth from $200 to $250 each.

Q:
I would appreciate your opinion of the value of my limited edition porcelain plate. It contains a scene of a Native American child holding a white dove and is titled “The White Dove” by Ted DeGrazia. It is a limited edition plate and part of the DeGrazia Children Series. It is in ver y good condition with no chips or cracks.
A: Ted DeGrazia is famous for his paintings of
the Southwest Native Americans. Your plate was made by Gorham China Manufacturing and would probably be worth $50 to $100.
Q:
The enclosed mark can be seen on the bottom of my inherited porcelain sugar bowl. It is decorated with baskets of pink roses and has a pedestal base. What can you tell me about its age, histor y and manufacturer? Do you think this has any antique value to a collector?
A:
You have an American Belleek sugar bowl that was made around the turn of the 20th century. Willets Manufacturing Co. in Trenton, N.J., used this mark. They produced exceptionally high quality porcelain that rivaled Irish Belleek.

pocket. Here are some tips to get you street smart and help you avoid being a victim: ■ In the mall, wear slacks (jeans are best) and keep your wallet in a front pocket. Leave purses locked in the trunk of the car. ■ Don’t take all your credit cards with you. Only take the ones you’ll use that day. ■ Keep an eye on clerks when they have your credit card in their hands. It only takes a second for one of them to slide your card through a reader and capture your number. ■ Be aware of your surroundings. If someone has a cell phone near you, they might be trying to capture an image of your credit-card number. ■ If you need to pull cash out of an ATM, do it at your own bank before you shop. Adapting to the ball above your feet
P.O. Box 2207 Palm Springs, CA 92263 Phone: 760.320.0997 Fax: 760.320.1630
Have you ever found yourself hitting the ball email: valleybits@msn.com great at the driving range, only to see all that disappear on the course? It could be that the ball at the range is always level to your feet, but on the hilly course your setup is always changing. To overcome these terrain changes, you first need to assess your lie. Is the ball above or below your feet? In the photo I’ve drawn a line to represent my “foot level”. In this case the ball is several inches above that line, which means I need to make two adjustments to my setup: 1) I need to grip down an inch off the top of the club to shorten the shaft. 2) I need to be taller in the legs with less angle in my back. My swing will also need some adjusting. My right foot needs to push my hip up through the ball to avoid hitting it fat, and I’ll finish with my hips and shoulders level to the horizon. This swing is somewhat similar to a baseball swing, more horizontal than “down” to the ball. Your goal is to adjust your setup according to your lie and have the clubhead make a clean bush of the grass through the ball. Once you’ve learned to adapt to the slopes this way, youll be producing the best shots possible. PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
