BETTE MIDLER (from page 2) was not only her musical director in the early years; he acted as her pianist as well. • A first-time guest appearance on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” in the 1970s gave Midler’s early career an enormous boost. She was also the final guest on Carson’s farewell show in 1992. The only other guest on that final show was Robin Williams. Midler sang “One for My Baby and One More for the Road” Bette Midler backstage at the Grammy to Carson. Awards, February 1990. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.” • Snakes are sometimes born with two heads, but they don’t survive long. It seems the heads fight each other for food. • Pregnant women might be particularly interested in the following: The animal that is pregnant the longest is the African elephant, with an average gestation period of 660 days (though some pregnancies can last up to 100 days longer). The record for shortest gestation period is held jointly by three marsupials, including the American opossum, which remain pregnant for only 12 to 13 days.
• The title song from the 1979 movie “The Rose” earned Midler her first Gold single and first Grammy Award. The song was No. 1 on the Billboard charts for five weeks, and the soundtrack album had sales of over two million records. In addition to her Grammy, she was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for her starring role as a rock-and-roll singer, reminiscent of Janis Joplin. Although she didn’t win the Oscar, she did capture the Golden Globe for the performance.
• During this season of excess, it might be worthwhile to remember that the typical holiday meal contains more than 3,000 calories. It also might be worthwhile to remember that the suggested daily intake of calories for men is 2,500; for women it’s 2,000.

CREATURES Other than “cat” and “canary,” how many animals can you think of that begin with the letter “C?” Tidbits has found some of the more unusual creatures that meet this criterion. • The world’s largest rodent is the capybara, a close relative of the chinchilla and guinea pig. This unusual furry creature is an excellent swimmer and can remain underwater for five minutes, and can even sleep under water, provided his nose just breaks the surface. It’s a social animal that is very vocal and can be heard purring, barking, whistling, squealing and grunting. • You can find cuckoo birds on every continent except Antarctica. They range in size from six inches to 25 inches, depending on the species, and enjoy a diet of insects, especially hairy caterpillars. A:
I spoke with John recently to talk about his other hosting duties, that of the ninth-annual National Dog Show presented by Purina (which airs on Thanksgiving Day after the Macy’s Parade), and he told me the reason behind his departure: “I had a wonderful time hosting John O’Hurley ‘Family Feud.’ They wanted to move the show to Orlando, but with my child responsibilities here that just wasn’t going to happen. So, I just have to look at it as four phenomenal years. I miss the show dearly, but it frees me up to do so many other things. I’m back on Broadway, and will be heading back to Broadway again, and those are things that I just couldn’t do as freely when I was committed to ‘Family Feud.’” John is very grateful that you enjoyed him on the show, as well as the MANY other readers who wrote in to me to tell me that they missed him. ***

Would I, or CCH Pounder, ever steer you wrong? There are actually TWO “Avatar” sequels in the works. 20th Century Fox hopes to have the first of the as-of-now-untitled sequels in theaters by December 2014, with the third movie released the following December 2015. Director/visionary James Cameron released this statement: “In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of ‘Avatar’s’ visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts

Everyday CHEAPSKATE
®
by Mary Hunt
Life After a Financial Hardship Dear Mary: How does a person recover from foreclosure? I hate it that I was not able to save my home. I had family problems, and I ® just could not make it happen. What would you advise that I do now? -- Latasha P., Via e-mail
Everyday CHEAPSKATE by Mary Hunt
Dear Latasha: I know this is hard, but you need to stop looking back. It’s over and done with, and now you look ahead and to the future. The most important thing is that you pay your bills on time, all the time. I assume you are renting now, and that’s not such a bad thing. Homeownership is not the be-all and end-all, and it’s certainly not right for everyone. I hope you are diligently building up your contingency fund and working on your freedom account, too. Money in the bank changes everything, including your attitude and outlook on life. You will own a home again, if that’s what you want. I have confidence in you. *** Dear Mary: I logged on to the web site AnnualCreditReport.com and requested a free credit report from TransUnion. I remember you once wrote that it is OK to give the company my Social Security number, which I did. Then
the company said I needed to call to give it more information. It asked me which credit cards I have and for their numbers. I refused to give it that information and was told it could not send my free report without the requested information. Is this how all credit report companies work, and is it legal? I'm just not comfortable giving out all that information. -- Johanna, Via e-mail Dear Johanna: These companies have a fiduciary responsibility to protect your identity and private information. They need more than your Social Security number to make sure you are who you say you are. Often, they will ask about recent transactions you’ve made or other identifying information that no one but you would know. If you want your credit report, you must comply by giving the company enough information for it to positively match you with the information in your file. This is solely for your own protection. Remember that it manages millions of files. This protocol is a good thing. You would have reason to be concerned if this had come unsolicited, but you initiated the request. Don’t worry. *** Dear Mary: I am getting remarried, and we both have kids from previous marriages, most of whom are 16 or older. (One is 6.) Do we still follow the same principles as the ones in your book “Debt-Proof Your Marriage”? I think I will be resentful if we are pooling our money and my husband decides he wants to help pay for his child’s college or buy a car for one of them (and vice versa). I love his kids very much, but something like this would bother me to the point of resentment. -- Karen G., e-mail
Page 7
Dear Karen: Cancel or at least postpone the wedding for now. Second marriages (or third?) are difficult enough. Add the dynamic of teenagers from two different families, a youngster and a wife who comes into the situation already feeling suspicious and resentful over money -- and you have the recipe ingredients for total disaster. This situation is not the kids' fault and they deserve better than that. You’ll have plenty of time to look after your marital happiness once all of these kids are grown and successfully on their own. ***

Every day, I get e-mails from people who have problems with their dog. Occasionally, I get e-mails from people who have problems with their fellow man. Here’s one of them: “I thought it might be useful if I mentioned that your efforts to persuade owners of the need for training, as well as a lot of the discussion in recent news about possibly banning pit bulls, etc., would be unnecessary if we had proper laws to motivate the owners. “There is definitely a problem with aggressive dogs. There are hundreds of reported dog bites in our (Brevard, Fla.) county alone every month. Nobody seems to know what to do about it. I have a simple solution. “We need simple laws that make the dog owner totally responsible for the actions of their dogs. It could say, in effect, we don’t care what kind of dog you have, how many or how you train them, but we will have your head on a platter if your dog harms anyone. “If the owner truly needed to be concerned about the consequences of his dog’s behavior, the owner would automatically make sure the dog would not do anything that would lead to adverse consequences. He would take care of training, veterinary care, etc. 1 45 If he did notHRS: know MIN: how, it would be his responsibility to find out. AdVenture Media “The problem now is, dog owners practically have a license to kill. Dogs can cause serious harm to innocent people, and the owners get a slap on the wrist. A dog owner has little to fear because the laws are written and enforced in a way that strongly favors the dog owner and they provide such mild penalties. “If we had laws like I propose, you wouldn’t have to persuade and cajole owners to get them to properly train their pets. The owners would beat a path to the door of professional trainers like you to make sure they had proper obedience training for their pet. Or they wouldn’t own one.” While I have mixed emotions about people beating a path to my door, I do love the idea of everyone having properly trained pets -- just as I love the idea of everyone having polite children and well-behaved CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10 Tidbits® of Coachella Valley

some physical problems at my job, but I was still working part time. However, recently I’ve been forced to stop working because of my impairments. My doctor signed a paper saying that I am 100 percent disabled so I could get a handicapped sticker for my car. I’m pretty sure I’d qualify for Social Security disability. Can I file for those benefits? Some people have told me I can, but others have told me it’s too late.

A: Yes, you can file for Social Security disability
benefits. If your claim is approved, you will be switched from retirement payments to disability payments. That would mean a little extra money in your monthly benefit checks. A Social Security disability benefit pays the same rate as your full retirement benefit at age 66. But from that amount, they will have to deduct about one-half of 1 percent for each month you’ve already received reduced retirement payments. Here’s a quick example. Let’s say your full retirement benefit is $1,000 per month. You took reduced retirement at age 62, meaning you’re getting about $750 per month. You file for disability benefits and your claim is approved after you’ve been receiving retirement checks for 10 months. Your disability rate would be $1,000 minus about 5 percent (10 retirement checks times one-half of 1 percent equals 5 percent) or about $50 leaving you with $950 per month. There is one other point I need to make. You should

know that getting a disability sticker for your car in no way means you will automatically be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. The qualification requirements for the federal government’s disability program are much stricter than the rules for getting disability parking stickers. ***
“My radio station? AM 1340, of course!”
Q:
I am 68 years old and have been getting Social Security benefits for five years. I was recently in a car accident and am now completely disabled. Can I file for Social Security disability benefits? If not, what about SSI?
A. No, you can’t file for Social Security disability
benefits. The difference between your situation and that described in the first question is that you are already over age 66. Once you’re over your full retirement age, you are already receiving the highest amount you are due from Social Security. Here is another way to look at that. I suppose you technically could file for disability benefits. And if your claim was approved, you would be eligible for your full retirement benefit. But from that rate, they would have to deduct one-half of 1 percent for all the Social Security checks you’ve received -- and that would take you right back down to the reduced payment rate you’re currently getting. You asked if you might qualify for SSI. Supplemental Security Income is a federal welfare program that the Social Security Administration runs for the government. It pays a small monthly stipend to low-income people over 65. If a low-income person is disabled, the SSA can pay one who is under 65. Because you’re over 65, you would not get SSI disability benefits. But if your income and assets are low enough, you might get SSI payments just because you’re over 65 and poor. SSI eligibility rules vary from state to state, so you will have to contact your local Social Security office to find out if you qualify. ***

for my Social Security soon. I have a 14-year-

old stepson who has been disabled since birth. Will he be able to get disability benefits on my Social Security account?
A:
Your stepson will qualify for dependent’s benefits on your record because he is a minor child, not because he is disabled. In other words, the fact that he has a disability isn’t an issue -- at least, not for the time being. But when he turns 18, his disability will become a factor in his continuing eligibility for benefits. Normally, the law says that benefits to a dependent child are cut off at the 18th birthday. But if a child is disabled, those benefits can continue indefinitely, even into his adult years. ***
Q:
I think one way we can trim Social Security expenditures is to eliminate the disability program. After all, that’s just a welfare boondoggle that doles out taxpayer-funded payments to deadbeats and bums. People getting regular Social Security like me are fed up with all these people cheating the system!
A: I’m always amazed by the number of people
that consider the Social Security disability program as a “welfare boondoggle.” The folks who collect disability benefits have worked and paid Social Security taxes just like those getting retirement benefits. In fact, I like to think of the Social Security disability program as simply an early retirement, or disability retirement benefit. And I’m curious: What makes a person getting disability a “cheater” and a person getting retirement, like you, a “regular” guy? Anyone who really understands the disability program knows that a person has to be severely disabled to qualify for monthly disability benefits. To label them “deadbeats and bums” means you really don’t know what you’re talking about. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. you know about post-traumatic stress disorder. I think someone in my family suffers from it. -- A.F.
ANSWER: Having faced an event that threatened life or caused serious injury is the basis for post-traumatic stress disorder. The event keeps resurfacing in the mind with a clarity that imparts terror and helplessness, and sometimes guilt. The remembrance can happen during the day or in dreams. An affected person stays in the alert mode at all times. He or she loses interest in life, neglects those around him or her, suffers from fragmented sleep, often erupts in outbursts of anger and is usually quite depressed. Soldiers, firemen, policemen and those who suffered a sexual or physical attack are people who most often develop PTSD. With the combination of talk treatment and medicines, these people can usually regain their equilibrium and resume a normal life. ***

Holiday Miracles Q:
Because of our financial situation this year, we’re not going to be able to make our annual trip to spend the holidays with our large family. We are ver y disappointed about this. Our gift-giving will also be minimal. Nevertheless, we are remaining positive, basically healthy, happy and thankful for our many blessings. Do you hear from other seniors with the same situation? Can you suggest some creative ways we can touch our families and share our love, even though we won’t be together?
A:

The value of gifts is a non-issue. What is meaningful is your love, remembrance and caring. Hopefully, next year you will be able to visit inperson and receive those extra hugs and kisses you missed this year!
Q:
Our Dad died ten years ago and left Mom with little knowledge of how to even manage the checkbook. She eventually managed to get ahold of her finances, but it was difficult for her. Now her health is failing and she wants to spare us the problems she had. She has offered to share openly her estate situation and has called for a family meeting. Can you advise what questions should we ask, or suggestions we could make?
A:
The first thing she needs to let you know is where her keys and important paperwork is kept. Does she keep a list of her bank accounts, insurance policies, will, trusts, safe deposit box, health care proxy, and power of attorney? Next, make sure all of her important forms are signed and updated. Who are her beneficiaries? Will they share equally, or are percentages involved? Who holds power of attorney to facilitate the transfers? Have her funeral services and burial plot been arranged? Are her personal possessions, such as jewelry, art cars, etc., to be given to specific family members? You will soon find in your meeting that there are many more questions you would like answered. Your mother is a jewel to invite all of you together to discuss these important matters. Her positive attitude will serve to be extremely helpful when distributions are to be made. From the family’s point of view, each of you will know in advance what is to be yours. Your mother could also explain why each item is to be given to whom. Relieving her of those responsibilities now will mean she will be less stressed and happier as the end nears.
Yes. Realizing that you are loved and being thankful certainly helps create your positive attitude. Everyone’s life has its ups and downs and it runs in cycles. It’s the way we react to life’s events that can create our small miracles. Buy photo albums from your dollar store for each family. Dig through photos for your most memorable ones. Make photo copies and write comments on a sticker for the backside. Baby pictures are always winners! You can also include the family’s motto and best recipes everyone loves. The post office now offers flat rate mailing packages, which are quite inexpensive. These are also handy for sending a few family items, such as dad’s old knife or cufflinks or mom’s favorite handkerchief or pin. If you have saved a few vacation photos sent from your family over the years, your family would get a kick out of getting them back. Featuring hurricane strength winds, the storm killed somewhere between 10,000 and 30,000 people and sank hundreds of Royal Navy ships. • On Nov. 22, 1783, John Hanson, the first president of the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation, dies in his home state of Maryland. Hanson is sometimes called the first president of the United States, but this is a misnomer, since the presidency did not exist until 1789. • On Nov. 28, 1925, the Grand Ole Opry, one of the longest-lived and most popular showcases for Country Western music, begins broadcasting live from Nashville, Tennessee. The showcase was originally named the Barn Dance, after a Chicago radio program called the National Barn Dance. • On Nov. 26, 1931, the first cloverleaf interchange to be built in the United States, at the junction of US 1/9 and NJ Route 35 in Woodbridge, N.J., is featured on the cover of the Engineering News-Record. A piece on the under-construction Hoover Dam was relegated to the journal’s back pages. • On Nov. 24, 1944, 111 U.S. B-29 Superfortress bombers raid Tokyo for the first time since 1942. Their target: the Nakajima aircraft engine works. Despite the barrage of bombs that were dropped, fewer than 50 hit the main target, doing little damage. • On Nov. 23, 1966, Elvis Presley’s 22nd film, a rock ‘n’ roll musical called “Spinout” in which Elvis played a singing race car driver, opens in theaters across the country. “Spinout” was filmed on location at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and the Ascot Motor Car Racing Ground, a well-known dirt track nearby. • On Nov. 25, 1980, Sugar Ray Leonard regains boxing’s welterweight title when his opponent, reigning champ Roberto Duran, waves his arms and walks away from the fight in the eighth round, telling the referee “No mas, no mas” (“No more”). Q: I have enclosed a photo of a plate, which
was given to me about 55 years ago by an elderly friend. Marked on the back, there is a circle with a cross and the word, “Limoges.” On the front, there is a handwritten signature. What can you tell me about my plate?
A:
You have a wild bird game plate, which was probably part of a game set. Sets included a platter and 12 plates. The mark was used by C. et J., a decorating studio that was in business from the late 1800s to 1914. Similar game plates sell in the range from $200 to $300.

your bank checks. Stop your mail while you’re away. Use a shredder for all trash that has your name and any personal information on it. Check your credit reports to make sure there are no errors. Take mail to the post office instead of leaving it outside your home. Don’t put your Social Security number on a job application. Even after taking all these safety steps, many people also purchase an identity-theft protection service. These services, however, do not completely free you from risk. In considering a protection service, you need to know: What is included in the services the company provides? Some will monitor your personal information and alert you when it’s being used to apply for loans, credit cards or turning on utilities.

Q:
I have a child’s glass coffee set that was made by Akro Agate Co. in Clarksburg, W.Va. It is their No. 234 Gypsy pattern tea set. The set consists of four green plates, four yellow saucers, four orange cups, a blue sugar bowl, a blue creamer and a blue coffeepot with a lid. I have the original box, which is in fair condition. What can you tell me about the histor y, age and value of my dishes?
A:
Akro Agate Co. was founded in 1910 in Akron, Ohio. When the company moved to Clarksburg, W.Va., in 1914, it became a leading manufacturer of marbles. When marble sales declined, they ventured into producing decorative objects, including powder jars, ashtrays, dishes, candlesticks, children’s dishes and flowerpots. In the beginning, sales of the colorful line of children’s dishes were sluggish. It dramatically changed for the better in the 1940s. By the 1940s, the onset of World War II and the end to Japanese toy imports were catalysts to the success of the children’s dishes. Your coffee set was made in the 1930s and has been seen selling from $175 to $300. ***

• The life of the first woman prime minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher, had humble beginnings. Growing up as the daughter of a father who owned a couple of grocery stores, she enjoyed swimming and playing hockey. In college, she studied chemistry, and after graduation, went to work as a research chemist for a plastics company, followed by a stint as a chemist helping develop a method for preserving ice cream. • After her marriage to Denis Thatcher, she began studying for the bar. At age 28, she became a barrister specializing in tax law, and later that year, became the mother of twins. At 45, Thatcher was Britain’s Secretary of State for Education and Science, and in 1979 she was elected Prime Minister. Although she had the longest continuous period of office of any 20th-century Prime Minister, she had the second-lowest approval rating of any post-war Minister. Following her time in office, Thatcher went on to serve as Chancellor of the College of William and Mary in Virginia and Chancellor of the University of Buckingham.

How are you notified if a breach in your security is detected? How much does the service cost? An average cost for these services is generally in the neighborhood of $10 per month, although certain add-on features can raise that price. If you’re still the victim of identity theft, what services will the company provide to help you? What is the uppermost level of their insurance, should fraud occur and they have to do the work to restore your credit? For a real-world look at how identity-theft protection works, go online to www.pcworld.com and put this title in the search box: Identity-Theft Protection: What Services Can You Trust? Although the article is a few years old, the steps taken to test various identity-theft companies are worth noting. The point is that no company, no matter what it promises, can keep you completely safe. You need to initiate the basic first steps yourself in safeguarding your personal information. PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. HRS: 2 MIN: • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
