Imagine the astonishment when early travelers heading West happened upon one of the largest canyons in the world. Whoa! Put on the brakes as we explore the Grand Canyon, one of the most popular tourist sites on earth. • Grand Canyon National Park is 277 miles long, 5,000 feet deep and about 18 miles wide. Encompassing 1,218,375 acres of northern Arizona, it is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and hosts around 5 million guests each year, more than any other U.S. National Park. • According to archaeologists, the Desert Archaic, Anasazi and Pueblo Indians were the earliest people to live in the Grand Canyon region. Others explored the region in the 1500-1800s, with probably the most significant being Major John Wesley Powell, a onearmed Civil War veteran. (He lost his arm in the battle of Shiloh.) He and his group of ten men explored the area in several expeditions from 1869-1872. • The area was established as a Forest Preserve in 1893, Grand Canyon Game Preserve in 1906, a National Monument in 1908 and Grand Canyon National Park in 1919, three years after the National Park Service was created. • With the Grand Canyon’s large expanse of land there is great environmental variety. The elevation ranges from 1,200 feet near Lake Mead to 9,165 feet above sea level at the north rim. Scientists have identified five life zones in the park: Lower Sonoran, Upper Sonoran, Transition, Canadian and Hudsonian. The best way to think of this is that if you traveled from Mexico to Canada, you would see lots of variations

Corrections due: Wed., 01/20/10, noon The Eagles band was formed in 1971 when four backup players for Linda Ronstadt decided to try to make it on their own. Of the original four Don Henley and Glenn Frey have always been part of the group, which is still performing today.
5.Which dam is older? When was it completed? (Answers on page 16)
• There have been seven members through the years. The two other original members were Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner who left the band in 1976 and 1977, respectively. Don Felder joined the group in 1974 and left with hard feelings – and a lawsuit – in 2001. Joe Walsh and Timothy Schmit joined in 1976 and 1977 respectively and are still touring with Henley and Frey.

rizona has the real Grand Canyon, but there are other canyons around the United States and Canada that include “grand” in their names. Let’s explore!
• There are four “Grand Canyons” in Canada, all in British Columbia. The Grand Canyon of the Fraser and Grand Canyon of the Nechako are in north-central British Colombia. The Nechako River flows into the Fraser River. The other two Canadian grand canyons are in the far north of B.C. The Grand Canyon of the Liard River is home to the most significant hot springs area in Canada. The Grand Canyon of the Stikine is in northwestern B.C. and is one of the most rugged river canyons in the world. Only a small number of world-class kayakers have ever attempted to run this river. The mouth of the Stikine is actually in Alaska. The river has prolific salmon runs, but because of the tremendous force of the rapids, the salmon are only in the lower one-third of the river.
• Hawaii has Waimea Canyon, which is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, located on Kauai. If you happen to be there in May, The Banana Poka Roundup is a “forest fair” that educates the public about the banana poka weed, which is an invasive pest.

He is mum, however, when it comes to current lady-love, Renee Zellweger. A Wish List Is the Secret to Success Feeling down in the dumps because you don’t have an iPad or a pretty new sofa? Wish you could take your hubby to a nice restaurant for his birthday, but alas, you are broke? Turn around your ® attitude and cancel your pity party with a simple tool: a wish list. Mary Hunt your wish list is up to you. Howbyyou create It can be a small notebook that you keep in your handbag, a scrap of paper on the refrigerator door or even a file on your computer. A written wish list is magical because it gives credence to your heart’s desires. Once you turn it into a management tool, you’ll see how things will change for you. When you create a wish list, you’ll stop feeling sorry for yourself. You’ll stop making stupid impulse purchases, and you’ll stop digging your debt hole even deeper. Here’s how it works: When a wish enters your mind, examine it carefully. Do you want an iPad because you have a good use for it or just because your friend has one and, well, it looks cool? If you can justify such a thing in your life, go ahead and add it to your wish list. Be sure to date the entry. Once each week, review your wish list. It’s likely that the neon purple flatware that you just had to have last week will fade in importance. In fact, by this week, you might think it’s really dumb. What were you thinking? Great. Delete it from your list. Consider other items on the list, deleting or confirming as you go. Then look at the order in which the items appear. Which one still holds a burning desire? Move it to the top of the list. Arrange items in order of importance below No. 1. Repeat every week or so. Once an item has remained at the top of the list for a period of time that you have desig-

“Chip is very well behaved and never runs off. He almost never barks. The only problem: When we take him on walks, he pulls so hard that only the men in the family can hold the leash. We made a saddlebag to help him expend more energy on the walks, and when we were taking the bag off last night, he bit my dad’s hand hard enough to break the skin and leave serious puncture wounds. It was dark, and he rolled onto his back on the ground while we took off the saddlebag, but he didn’t make any noise indicating that we had hurt him. “The only other time he shows aggressive behavior is when we try to throw things for him to chase. He won’t let you take back a toy when he fetches. He tries to snatch it from you and might nip you in the process. “This is the only time that he’s actually bitten anyone, but it was a serious bite, so I want to know how we can fix this issue.” I spoke with Chip’s temporary owners on the phone. Turns out, not only does Chip growl when they attempt to play with his toys, but he also growls and snarls when anyone approaches his food. Chip, of course, was never trained. And his temporary family has repeatedly endorsed his aggressive behavior by staying away from Chip’s toys and food -giving Chip exactly what he wants and teaching him that growling is the way to get it. The problems with this are many, but the one that looms largest is the fact that their 4-year-old niece lives in the house with Chip. When a wolf bares its teeth, you don’t pet it. When a rattlesnake shakes its rattle, you don’t 1 45 curl up next to it. When a bull lowers its horns, you don’t go to shake hands. Why is it any different with a snarling dog? In thinking the problem behavior was due to a lack of exercise, these people put their heads together and came up with a highly creative solution: the saddlebag. While it’s more likely that this only contributed to the problem, it nevertheless demonstrates a degree of problem-solving prowess. So it boggles the mind that, while speaking to me on the phone, the notion of professional training remained elusive -- even offensive. “Can’t I just train him with a book?” the woman said to me after describing the puncture wounds from Chip’s bite. Two things: 1) You can’t train the tendency to bite out of a 2-year-old biter. Your best hope is to learn to curb the HRS:

Stopping or Not Filling Prescription is a Bad Idea Almost daily, I confront patients who elect to stop or not fill a recommended prescription. In the field of geriatrics, this is rarely life-threaten-

While non compliance may not contribute to mortality rates, it seriously affects a physician’s ability to maintain healthy patients. Nearly half of patients elect to discontinue an effective medication, fail to follow the doctor’s advice, and either stop early or take their medications incorrectly. Many patients simply forget to take their medicine. Information just published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine evaluated non-adherence to medications in more than 75,000 patients treated by 1,217 medical prescribers. Only 78 percent of the nearly 200,000 prescriptions were filled, and of those prescriptions written for new medications, only 72 percent were filled. The study also found that compliance rates vary with the type of physicians who prescribe

medication. For example, prescriptions were filled more often when written by a primary care physician, particularly pediatricians. Fewer prescriptions were filled if the physician was a specialist, younger, female or part of a group of more than 10 physicians. Prescriptions for patients under the age of 18 were more likely to be filled. Sadly, compliance was least likely in older patients with multiple chronic diseases, including high blood pressure (28.4 percent), elevated cholesterol (28.2 percent) and diabetes (31.4 percent). Patients fail to follow a doctor’s orders for various reasons. In many cases, cost is a concern. Patients without health insurance and those insured patients with high co-pays or deductibles may never fill a prescription. For many Medicare patients, medications are discontinued upon reaching the “doughnut hole” -- when insurance requires the patient to pay all costs up to $2,500. Fortunately, health care reform will slowly eliminate this gap in coverage. The cost of medication is particularly problematic for older adults with multiple chronic illnesses and those on fixed incomes. However, cost is only one reason for poor prescription compliance. Potential side effects scare many patients from beginning a therapy. In addition, filling prescriptions seems to be partly assisted by the ease with which they can be obtained. For example, compliance appears to be higher at Kaiser Permanente hospitals and clinics, where patients can pick up drugs at a pharmacy on site. The key to improving compliance is education. Patients must understand the purpose of every prescribed medication. More importantly, they must know how benefits of the drug outweigh potential risks. Your doctor has an important role in explaining the value and need for a particular medication and providing understandable information on the prevalence of side effects. For virtually every medication used to treat chronic illnesses such as pain, high blood pressure, heart disease and osteoporosis, the true incidence of side effects is quite rare. Nevertheless, when side effects do occur, particularly if unexpected, they cause a great deal of alarm. I always advise my patients to discuss their medications with a trusted pharmacist, who plays a key role in education and minimizes the risks of side effects. Failure to take medications appropriately can lead to continued symptoms and progressive disease. Moreover, it contributes to poor health and rising medical costs. If possible, always talk to your physician or pharmacist before discontinuing a medication. Whatever the reason for noncompliance, you should not feel reluctant or embarrassed to tell your doctor that you have elected not to fill or continue taking a medication. If cost is a concern, discuss it immediately. Generic, low-cost medication may be available or different therapies may be appropriate. If side effects are unbearable, do not wait for several months to discuss it with your doctor. Call the clinic, make the doctor aware of the problem and find out whether there is an appropriate alternative.

And the best chance of achieving this is by working with a professional trainer. 2) A biter can’t live under the same roof as a small child. It’s child endangerment, plain and simple. The question to ask in this case isn’t “What are we going to tell the relative when we return the dog?” It’s “What would we tell child welfare if something were to happen to the child?” Better yet: “How would we feel if our niece were seriously injured on our watch?” In all my years of helping dogs and people to understand one another, nothing surprises me more than the tendency of some dog owners to put a dog’s feelings before a child’s safety. Q:
Our son and daughter-in-law have serious differences as how to best teach their teenager son and daughter about life and money. Our son’s strategy is to keep a tight rein on the family budget, not to overspend their income and to save for their teenagers’ education. Most seniors were raised when their families were struggling just to pay for food, clothing and housing, so obviously we have all the answers. Now, we believe it’s a time to be conser vative. Our daughter-in-law feels their children are entitled to have more than what her parents gave her. She indulges them. Should we openly express our beliefs?
A:
How they raise their kids is their decision, not yours! It is dangerous to your family relationships if you become too vocal. Today, even teenagers are aware of the lack of jobs for college graduates, parents losing jobs and their homes, governmental overspending, public rage over political policies, and little growth in our economy. A softer approach is to share what your childhood was like and how you survived. Hopefully, telling some of the details will encourage a wake-up call. We all want our children to love themselves, find someone to love and who loves them, and enjoy a happy and successful life. To encourage them, help them become more self-reliant. Teach the grandkids how to cook, to set a budget based on saving and spending, to write a check, to set up lifetime goals, to learn a trade, to become fluent in another language and to take care of their health. The more they accept their responsibility and how to take care of themselves, the happier they will become. In revealing your childhood experiences, your family can become closer and more communicative. Learning to cope, rather than mope, is the winning philosophy.

Q:
Over the years before retirement, we saved $25,000 for our emergency backup. Now we are invading our principal. We are learning “silent inflation” is catching us by surprise as we discover less cereal and ice cream in boxes, compare last year’s medical insurance and bills, and pay higher auto license fees. We see our current lifestyle is not sustainable. Governmental statistics would indicate inflation is not much of an issue. Who is kidding whom?

Q:
I am 70 years old. I was getting my own Social Security retirement benefit -- about $1,400 per month. Then a few months ago, my husband died and I started getting widow’s benefits that equal his rate, which is $2,000 per month. I am still working. In the past, I got a small increase in my retirement benefit each year because of my extra earnings. Now that I’m getting widow’s benefits, will I keep getting those increases for my earnings?
A: This is going to be one of those wishy-
washy “yes and no” answers. Yes, your own Social Security benefit will increase every year. But no, you won’t see that increase in your monthly Social Security payments. Here’s why: You said that since your husband died, you’ve been receiving widow’s benefits of $2,000 per month. But on Social Security’s books, what you’re actually getting is your own $1,400 retirement benefit and a widow’s supplement of $600 to take you up to your husband’s Social Security rate. As you keep working and adding money to your Social Security record, those extra earnings will continue to bump up your own Social Security benefit -- to the tune of maybe an extra $20 per month added to your checks for each year you keep working. So, let’s say your own retirement benefit goes up to $1,420 next year. Well, then your widow’s supplement will go down to $580, since your total benefits must still add up to the $2,000 per month level. So, if you are working just to increase your Social Security benefit, you should quit your job tomorrow. But if you’re working because you enjoy what you’re doing and you like the money you’re You read making, then -- asitthey say -- “you go, girl!” in tidbits!
Q:
I am 62 and still making $70,000 per year. I don’t think I’m eligible for Social Security because I make too much money. But I want to lock in my Social Security benefit amount. How should I do this?

They do not recognize “power of attorney” because the rules for that designation are much more lenient and don’t necessarily involve the concept of mental incapability. For example, when my mom was still alive, she was living with my sister. And because my mom had some fairly severe physical complications (she was pretty much confined to my sister’s home), my sister was granted “power of attorney” status, so she could do things like sign checks for my mom, pay her bills and handle her banking. But mentally, my mother was just fine. So, she still took care of her Social Security matters and other legal affairs. In your case, it may very well be that your brother is mentally incapable of taking care of his Social Security business. But the power of attorney designation you have doesn’t prove that. You should file that representative payee application at your local Social Security office.

You really don’t “lock in” your Social Security amount -- at least not in the conventional sense of the term. And for the life of me, I can’t figure out why you are even considering this. As long as you keep working, your eventual Social Security benefit rate has only one way to go -- and that’s up. In other words, as you keep adding earnings to your Social Security account, especially at the level of income you said you’re making, your benefit amount will just keep ratcheting upward. I’m guessing that each year you keep working, you’re adding an extra $20 to $40 per month to your Social Security benefit. So, just put that concept of “locking in” your Social Security benefit out of your mind.

Reduce Falls, Take Your Medicine Here’s yet another reason to take all the medication that our doctors prescribe: It can save us from falls. A study was done by a group with a rather interesting name: MOBILIZE Boston, which stands for Balance, Independent Living, Intellect and Zest in the Elderly of Boston. The group exists to study fall risk factors in seniors. More than 600 participants with an average age of 78 were studied after they’d had falls. They were all asked four questions: Do they ever forget? Are they ever careless? Do they ever stop taking medicine when they feel better? Do they ever stop taking medicine if they feel worse? Forty-eight percent were what it called “low adherence,” which means they weren’t taking their prescriptions as instructed. Those seniors had more than one fall per year, a full 50 percent more than the “high adherence” group. Over the course of the study, 376 of the participants reported more than 1,000 falls. The researchers suggested that doctors quiz their senior patients about whether they take all medication as prescribed. While that might be a good idea, I have an idea, too: We need to take responsibility for our health, and that includes taking medications when and as they’re prescribed. Granted, there are some medications with side effects. But a call to the doctor’s office often can result in getting a slightly different medicine. After all, falls are one of the quickest ways we can lose our independence. Here are some more steps you can take to limit the number of falls: • Check your environment. Are there wrinkled throw rugs on your floors? Is the stair-rail sturdy? • Are your shoes comfortable, with a non-slip sole? • Do you need to update your eyeglass prescription? • Do you need handrails installed? Help is available if you ask for it. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. The famous Mercedes symbol, a three-point star, was registered as a trademark in 1909. • On June 26, 1948, U.S. and British pilots begin airlifting food and supplies to Berlin after the city is isolated by a Soviet Union blockade. By July 15, an average of 2,500 tons of supplies was being flown into the city every day. • On June 25, 1950, armed forces from communist North Korea smash into South Korea, setting off the Korean War. The United States quickly sprang to the defense of South Korea. More than 55,000 American troops were killed in the three-year conflict. • On June 24, 1975, an Eastern Airlines jet crashes near John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, killing 115 people. The Boeing 727 was brought down by wind shear during severe thunderstorms with heavy winds and rain. Seven passengers and two flight attendants survived the fiery crash. • On June 21, 1982, John W. Hinckley, Jr., who shot President Ronald Reagan, was found not guilty of attempted murder by reason of insanity. In the trial, Hinckley’s defense attorneys argued that their client had a pathological obsession with the 1976 film “Taxi Driver,” in which there is an attempt to assassinate a fictional senator. © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Porcelain Bowls Can Still Serve Berries
Vol. VI Issue 26
Q:
We have a set of porcelain dishes that includes over 100 pieces. This orange mark is located on the back of each dish. We are interested in learning about the manufacturer and the value of our set.
A:
Founded in the 1860s, Bawo and Dotter was a New York importer of china from Limoges, France, to the United States. Elite Works was the name of their decorating studio in Limoges. In 1896, they began producing their own porcelain. After World War I, the name became Guerin-Pouyat-Elite Ltd. Your dishes were made around 1900 and the set would probably be worth $800 to $1,200.

Vic Donahue was born in Philadelphia, but he spent his youth in Omaha, Neb. A Marine during World War II, he was the official artist appointed to record the combat he experienced. After the war, he illustrated books, magazines and advertising. In 1962, he and his wife moved to Tucson, Ariz. He devoted much of his work to painting the landscape and the people of the Southwest. Some of his paintings are in the permanent collections at the University of Nebraska, the Navy and Marine Collections and the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Donahue often included the date of his paintings with his signature. Take another look at your watercolor and you may find a date. Its value would probably be $750 to $1,500.

GRAND CANYON (from page page 3) Cameras aren’t allowed on the walkway, and numbered shoe covers are issued to visitors to prevent scratching and slipping. • Do you know who participated in the “First Walk” on the Skywalk? Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, after Neil Armstrong, on July 20, 1969. Aldrin walked out to meet Hualapai tribal leaders and John Herrington, the only Native American astronaut. It was a pretty significant day for the tribe and a great addition to the Grand Canyon experience.

• The Grand Canyon is a magnificent place for both a family vacation and studying nature. The Colorado River and canyon walls are full of scientific evidence about the history of the area. Both evolutionists and creationists are intrigued with the area, and even though they disagree about life origins, they agree that the Grand Canyon is one of the most amazing natural features on earth.

Smoother putts Too many players put an emphasis on “hitting” the ball when putting instead of concentrating on getting the ball rolling properly. A good roll includes topspin, which results in the ball dying toward the hole instead of trailing off to the left or right of the hole. Many players set up to a putt with too much weight on their forward foot. This causes a steeper putting stroke which results in backspin. The ball jumps a bit, and you don’t get the topspin you are looking for.
DOLLARS & SENSE: From page 14 • The property must be your primary home. • If you have a second mortgage, the first and second will be combined. • Your FICO credit score must be 500 or above. If you have an interest-only loan or an interest rate that will rise, a HARP refinance can help stabilize your payments by giving you a fixed rate. If you have a high interest-rate loan, a HARP refinance can help reduce your payments. For more information, check the government’s Making Home Affordable site at makinghomeaffordable. gov. When setting up to a putt, try putting a small amount of weight on your back foot. This encourages the putter to strike the ball slightly on the upswing causing that nice forward roll. You will find that your ball is rolling more true and you are going to make more putts.

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
