Your Dog’s Personality

“When Good Dogs Do Bad Things” is the title of a book on dogs that I co-authored with Mordecai Siegal. Chapter three is titled, “Your Dog’s Personality.” That’s right, your dog’s personality is weighty enough to warrant an entire chapter in a book.

When we discuss a dog’s personality, it’s important to note the difference between personality and temperament. Temperament is one’s natural disposition, determined by genes. Personality, as written in chapter three, “encompasses genetically derived behavior along with environmentally influenced behavior, which can, to some degree, be modified.”

Understanding your dog’s personality is infinitely useful. In fact, it’s wise to get to know a dog’s personality before he becomes your dog.

Think of it as a chance to choose a relative. And choose carefully. This dog will be your responsibility and a big part of your life for the next 15 years or so.

There are six canine personality types, and any one dog can have up to five of the six types.

The only personality types that are exclusive of each other are “nervous” and “sedate.” There’s no such thing as a relaxed, nervous dog.

The six personality types are: hardheaded/ stubborn, laid-back/sedate, excitable/nervous, timid/shy, responsive and aggressive.

There are five tests that will help you unravel the mystery of your pup’s personality. The tests and their general purpose are listed below.

For detailed information on how to safely and effectively administer these tests, please read “I Just Got a Puppy. What Do I Do?” This book takes you through each test, step by step, and is available in your public library, your local bookstore or at unclematty.com.

--The Social Attraction Test measures your pup’s reaction to people. As you kneel down and talk to your dog affectionately or employ a highpitched whine, he’ll get excited or bark, back away or approach you playfully, whine back at you, stare you down, and on and on. His reaction will give you insight into his personality.

When the Wife is the Primary Breadwinner

Every Social Security rule I can think of is gender-neutral. In other words, the same laws apply to men and women equally. But society hasn’t always been gender neutral. We all have heard the statistics: Men tend to make more money than women. And because Social Security benefits are based on lifetime income, men end up getting higher Social Security benefits than women do.

Also, biology isn’t gender-neutral. Women have babies. Men don’t. So women take more time off work to have and, frequently, raise children.

That’s just another reason women usually end up with a lower lifetime income and, therefore, less Social Security benefits than men.

What those factors (among others) mean is that when I talk about benefits available to spouses, I am almost always talking about benefits available to women. Because a wife usually ends up with a lower Social Security benefit than her husband, she is much more likely to be eligible for spousal benefits on his record -- especially after he dies.

But today’s questions come from couples who have bucked that trend. They come from households where the wife made more money than her husband. So they want to know how Social Security will work in their cases.

Q: I am about to turn 62. I have been a stay-at-home husband and father and, now, grandfather most of my adult life. My wife, who is also 62, is a doctor, and she always had sufficient income to care for all our needs. But now that we are both pushing retirement age, we want to know more about Social Security.

Specifically, I want to know if I am due any spousal benefits on my wife’s record.

A: Yes, you will be due husband’s benefits on your wife’s Social Security record. But you’ve got to wait until she retires. In other words, you can’t get any dependent benefits on her record until she is getting Social Security herself. If she is still working when she reaches her full retirement age, it might be wise for her to file for her Social Security then because they will be able to pay you your husband’s benefit share on top of her own benefits.

And, by the way, that share is 50% if you are over your full retirement age when she files.

One other thought: If you’ve worked at least 10 years, you would be due a small benefit on your own account. You could file for that now and switch to the higher husband’s benefits on her record when she files.

Q: I am 72 and single. My ex-wife just turned 62. We were married for 28 years. She usually made more money than I did. Can I get any extra Social Security benefits on her record?

A: Just as a divorced wife might be due benefits on her ex-husband’s record, you might be due benefits on your ex-wife’s record. But you would only be due extra benefits if your spousal rate is greater than what you are getting on your own account. Your spousal rate should be about half of your ex-wife’s full retirement rate. But here’s the bad news: That clause isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on! Anything you have your lawyer scribble into your divorce papers cannot override federal law. • About 90% of patchouli comes from Indonesia.

The plant is unable to reproduce by seeds and is propagated by cuttings, often planted in between rows of other crops. The scent of patchouli became associated with hippies of the 1960s, popular because it was used to mask the ubiquitous odor of marijuana and alcohol.

Madonna scented the packaging of her album “Like a Prayer” with patchouli because she wanted to invoke the Age of Aquarius.

COTY PERFUMES

• Francois Coty was born in 1874 and lived in Paris. One day he wanted to play cards with a friend, but the friend said he was busy because he planned to mix up a batch of his own cologne.

Francois asked if he could watch, and as a result became keenly interested in perfumes. He studied the art for two years, learning how to extract scents from flowers.

• At that time, the Industrial Revolution was yielding all sorts of synthetic essences as well.

Coty combined natural scents with synthetic ones, bottled them and began selling his perfumes to barbers.

• At the time, perfumes were sold in plain, unattractive pharmaceutical bottles. Coty decided instead to bottle his products in elegant crystal containers, feeling that something as lovely as perfume should appropriately be sold in an equally lovely bottle rather than ordinary one. He wanted to appeal to both the senses of sight and smell.

• He managed to get several department stores to display his products, however sales were disappointingly slow. But fate intervened in a store in Paris when he accidentally dropped a bottle of his perfume and it shattered on the floor.

Its pleasing scent permeated the store, creating a crowd of interested shoppers wanting to buy his products. The rest, as they say, is history.

• Today Coty ranks as the world’s largest manufacturer of perfumes, colognes and cosmetics, with annual sales exceeding $4 billion. □
