TRAGIC TREK

• In 1924, George (“because it’s there”) Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine were part of an expedition attempting to complete the first ascent of Everest. They were last seen on June 8 just below the summit making steady progress. Shortly after, they disappeared, leaving behind a mystery for the ages. Did they actually reach the summit? Did they perish on the way up, or on the way down? No one knows.

• In 1999, a team of climbers discovered Mallory’s remains high on the slopes of Everest.

The body did little to reveal whether or not he actually reached the top, and unfortunately the team’s camera was not found amongst his gear.

It is believed that Irvine was actually carrying the camera when they made their ascent and, if found, the device could hold the photographic evidence of their success or failure. To date, Irvine’s body has not been found, but if it is ever uncovered it could potentially change mountaineering history. Experts at Kodak say that the camera film, if recovered, could still be successfully developed.

Sometimes it’s hard to see the writing on the wall. We’re too close to a situation to prioritize, make decisions and set boundaries. The following letters are from readers who stare at the writing on their wall and see only hieroglyphics.

Sammo: “My girlfriend and I recently adopted Sammo, her parents’ 9-year-old Shar-Pei. He had become too much for them to handle and her father was ready to put Sammo down after he bit his wife -twice. We decided to adopt him since we did not see signs of aggression toward people during our time with him.

“At a recent checkup, Sammo snapped at the vet. Sammo has already snapped at me twice. Last night, we were on the back porch and he was enjoying a treat. It was getting dark and my girlfriend got up to get Sammo some water. He growled and charged at her. He has not had any real training outside of housebreaking and learning how to sit.

What should we do?”

The writing on the wall: Sammo had bitten twice before they adopted him, and they knew this. He’s an aggressive dog that requires professional training and firm boundaries. They will have to make concessions to keep Sammo safely in their lives and in their house.

Privacy Laws and Social Security

I recall my days as a trainee with the Social Security Administration. And gosh, that was almost 50 years ago! The very first thing drilled into our heads was a law called The Privacy Act, which prevented us from disclosing any information about anyone’s Social Security record to anyone other than the record holder.

Almost all Americans agree that the law makes sense. You certainly don’t want the government sharing earnings or benefit information from your Social Security files with other people. And “other people” means everyone -- including spouses. This isn’t too much of an issue for most married couples. For example, I know what my wife’s Social Security benefit is, and she knows what I am getting because we share that information with each other.

But if we weren’t a couple who shared that information, I would not be able to call the SSA to find out what she is getting, and she would not be able to call the SSA to find out what I am getting.

The government, or at least the Social Security Administration, is very strict about upholding these privacy laws.

And that can sometimes lead to problems when people try to get Social Security information about a spouse for legitimate reasons. This is especially true when it comes to divorced couples. Today’s emails provide examples of this.

Q: I was married to my husband for over 30 years. He was an old-fashioned man who said “a woman’s place is in the home,” so he never let me get an outside job. Therefore, I have no Social Security of my own. On the other hand, he was a doctor and made a ver y nice living, and I’m sure he will be due a comfortable Social Security retirement benefit.

About two years ago, he left me and married one of his young nurses. At least our divorce decree left me with our house and a little bit of money. I am about to turn 62. He is 67. I am tr ying to decide if I should file for my share of his Social Security now, or if I should wait until I am older and get a higher rate. My husband won’t tell me if he has applied for Social Security and/or how much he is due.

So I called the Social Security help line and was told that the law prevented them from telling me what I am due on his Social Security account. How can I make a decision if I don’t have all the facts?

A: First, I am going to give you a ballpark estimate of what you might be due on your ex-husband’s Social Security account. Then, I will help you get more precise information from the people at the SSA.

Because your ex was a doctor, let’s assume he probably paid the maximum amount into Social Security all his life, meaning he will likely qualify for a very high monthly Social Security benefit.

That rate is currently in the $3,100 range. At age 62, you’d be due about a third of that, or around $1,025 per month. If you wait until your full retirement age

to file, then you would get a 50% rate, or $1,550 per contact with mutual friends. Or at the very least, I suggest they find out where he lives and then submonth.

• Didier Delsalle, a fighter pilot and helicopter test pilot from France, landed a helicopter on the summit of Everest in 2005, setting a world record for highest altitude landing of a helicopter. Due to the thin air, helicopter rescues from Everest are almost impossible.

• The summit is just a few hundred feet below the cruising altitude of commercial jets.

• Everest grows a fraction of an inch taller each year because of the upward thrust of continental drift.

• Limestone, shale, sandstone, and marble found on Mt. Everest were once part of an ocean floor.
