Alaska (from page one) America. In March of that year, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signed the papers for the
purchase of Alaska for $7.2 million, a mere two cents per acre. • Most of Congress viewed the purchase as a waste of money, and the treaty, mocked as “Seward’s Folly,” was passed by the Senate by just one vote. Formal transfer of the territory took place at Sitka on October 18, 1867. • The new possession wasn’t of much interest at all until 1897, when gold was discovered in the Klondike by Joe Juneau and Richard Harris, near the present-day state capital city, Juneau. GEOGRAPHY
• The name Alaska has its origins in the Aleut language, with “Alyeska” translating “great land.” • Alaska is home to 17 of the 20 highest peaks in the United States. The highest, Denali, meaning “The Great One,” stands 20,320 feet above sea level, the highest mountain in North America. A gold prospector and explorer named Frank Densmore spread the word about the enormous peak during his travels in the late 1800s, and prospectors in the Yukon began calling the mountain “Densmore Peak.” • In 1897, another prospector, William Dickey, a great admirer of then-President-elect William McKinley referred to the peak as Mt. McKinley in a New York City newspaper article. The name later gained wide acceptance after the president’s assassination in 1901. It was further established when the entire area was officially named Mt. McKinley National Park in legislation in February, 1917. • A heated decades-long debate ensued, with many groups wanting the mountain’s title returned to its native name, Denali. In 1975, the State of Alaska petitioned to have it changed officially. However, that effort was stalled for decades by the Ohio congressional delegation

REMOVE STRAWBERRY HULLS Dear Mary: There’s no need to buy a fancy strawberry huller gadget. Just use an ordinary plastic drinking straw to hull strawberries. Wash the berry, and then push the straw up through the bottom of the berry until it breaks through the top and takes the hull -- the white part in the center of the berry -- with it. Remove any remaining leaves as necessary. This works really well. It’s fun, too! -- Rhonda

• Finland also leads everyone in milk consumption, along with the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. Countries drinking the least amount of milk include Laos, Cambodia, and North Korea. Milk consumption in the U.S. declines a little each year, 40% since 1975. This decrease has taken its toll on dairy farms, with 2,730 farms shutting down between 2018 and 2020. The trend towards soy, almond, coconut, and milk is the primary basis for the diminishing dairy sales.

I have a neighbor who has a chocolate lab. Twice now, their dog has evaded their electric fence and come at me from 20 to 30 yards. Both times I was about to go on a run. I love dogs and have had dogs all my life, but this one charges toward me while baring its teeth. I had a water bottle and did a frantic toss of water at the dog, to no avail. It did not end up biting me, but I was sure it was a possibility. The owners were in their driveway both times and were very slow to respond. They eventually retrieved their dog, but they didn’t apologize. This last time I was very upset and said, “Please keep your dumb dog in your yard.” The husband came at me in an aggressive way as if he were going to fight me. Later, his wife came to our front door with the dog muzzled and leashed and asked me to come out and meet the dog so I could see that it would never bite me. She pointed out the permanent bump on its head in an authoritarian way, explaining, “This dog has been abused. We adopted it years ago. What do you want us to do, put it to sleep?” I said, “I don’t have time to get to know all the past emotional states of the dogs in the neighborhood. I just would expect dogs, yours included, not to come after me aggressively, growling and displaying their teeth.” It was only after I mentioned to her that they had never apologized for their dog’s behavior that she muttered, “Oh, I’m sorry.” I called the township police, and they came over and gave them a warning. In all this, I fear we will be seen as the unreasonable ones. They are already in the other neighbors’ driveways pitching their version and answering questions about why a police cruiser was in the cul-de-sac. Our goal is not to gossip, but my wife also has been charged by this dog, and so has a second-grader in the neighborhood. By my lights, two things doomed this meeting between neighbors: 1) justifying aggression by citing prior abuse and 2) sarcasm. In the heat of the moment, it is difficult to see the big picture. And with fight-or-flight adrenaline coursing through your veins, it’s near impossible to keep your tone civil. But it can be done, and in the case of dog disputes between neighbors, it’s

You should also know that in addition to survivor benefits, a surviving spouse or child may also be eligible to receive a special lump-sum death payment of $255.

Dear Divorced: If your ex-husband worked and paid Social Security taxes and you and/or your daughter meet the eligibility requirements, you may very well be eligible for survivor benefits, but you should act quickly because benefits are generally retroactive only up to six months. Here’s what you should know.
But be aware that Social Security has limits on how much a family can receive in monthly survivors’ benefits – usually 150 to 180 percent of the worker’s benefit. Switching Strategies: Social Security also provides surviving spouses and ex-spouses some nice strategies that can help boost your benefits. For example, if you’ve worked you could take a reduced survivor benefit at age 60 and switch to your own retirement benefit based on your earnings history – between 62 and 70 – if it offers a higher payment.
email: valleybits@msn.com
Under Social Security law, when a person who has worked and paid Social Security taxes dies, certain members of that person’s family may be eligible for survivor benefits including spouses, former spouses and dependents. Here’s a breakdown of who qualifies.
Contact your Tidbits representative immediately with changes or corrections.
DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Who qualifies for Social Security survivor benefits? My ex-husband died last year, so I would like to find out if I or my 17-year-old daughter are eligible for anything? -- Divorced Survivor
Dependent parents: Benefits can also be paid to dependent parents who are age 62 and older. For parents to qualify as dependents, the deceased worker would have had to provide at least one-half of the parent’s financial support.

YOUR (Gosh, it may seem to some of my younger readers that I am writing about the Great DepresSOCIAL SECURITY sion era. I even find it hard to believe that in my lifetime, people were living on $160 per month, or even by Tom Margenau less!) Well, speaking of even less, one of the folks I came across in our efforts to find people potentially eligible for SSI benefits was an old man living all alone in a two-room house on the outer fringes of Every single day, I get emails from readers our little town. ing his bike most places he went. He hadn’t owned a car in years.) He came up to my desk looking a bit sheepish and said, “Tom, I want you to take me off this gosh darn SSI program.” When I asked why, he told me he just didn’t need all that money! I tried to point out that $160 per month really wasn’t all that much money. But to Don, it was. He said, “Tom, look at my bike. I bought that bell and those silly streamers because I had the extra cash. I look like a damn fool riding around town now.” And then he went on: “And that stupid TV. I used to sit around at night and read. Now I’m glued to that darn contraption, and I waste my time watching ‘Love Boat’ and ‘Laugh-In!’” I pointed out to Don that the extra money was one thing, but that the potential benefits of the Medicaid program could be invaluable to him. He thought about it for a minute and finally said, “I just don’t want it. I’ve gotten along just fine for years now on my Social Security checks and Medicare. I simply don’t need SSI and Medicaid.” I had to do a bit of digging through our rulebooks because I had no idea how to take someone off the SSI program. But I found the instructions, located the right form needed to withdraw his application and helped Don fill it out. He signed it and walked out the door a satisfied man. As he got on his bike, I saw him pull the streamers off the handlebar grips and stuff them into his pocket. Later that evening, I stopped by Don’s place. I just wanted to make sure that he really wanted to stop his SSI checks before I submitted his withdrawal form. But as I walked onto the porch of his modest little house, I could see through a window that the TV was gone. Don was sitting in a chair reading. I didn’t even bother knocking on the door to ask him about his decision. I knew he was happy! Now, I’m not recommending that my readers give up most of their earthly goods and live a simple life. But I am suggesting that there might be other things in life besides a maximized Social Security check that could make you happy. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Security -- Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books. Or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets. totaled nearly $400 million (about $3.5 billion in today’s dollars) Did you know the capital city of Juneau has had several different names? It was first named Harrisburg, after the co-discoverer of gold in the area. Joe Harris was the self-appointed town recorder and named the townsite after himself. In early 1881, Harrisburg became Rockwell in honor of the naval lieutenant commander stationed there. By the end of the year, the other gold co-discoverer, Joe Juneau, put the issue to a vote and 72 miners made the decision to officially change it to Juneau's namesake. Because of the rugged and treacherous mountains surrounding it, the only way to travel to Juneau is by plane or ferry. It shares its eastern border with the Canadian province of British Columbia. While the city has a small population, just 32,000, it receives about 900,000 cruise ship passengers and another 100,000 independent travelers every year. The state’s most populous city, Anchorage, is home to nearly 40% of Alaska’s population. It’s larger in land area than the entire state of Rhode Island. On January 3, 1959, legislation was signed admitting the territory of Alaska to the Union as the 49th state. □
