cate that the fruit was first cultivated 7,000 years ago, and they’ve been grown commercially in Crete since 3000 BC OLIVES THROUGHOUT HISTORY
• The ancient Greeks and Romans slathered olive oil on their bodies and in their hair as part of their grooming and health rituals. Greek physician Hippocrates called olive oil “the great therapeutic.” Greek women created the first eye shadow by blending olive oil with charcoal dust. Kings were anointed with olive oil and champions of Olympic Games were crowned with coronets of olive branches and leaves. Olive oil was burned in the cauldron of the ancient Olympic Games’ “eternal flame,” a tradition that was revived at the 2004 Athens Fri., Sept. 11, 2020 Games.
• Spain leads the world today in cultivation of olives, with Italy in second place, and Greece in third. Spain’s Andalucian region produces about 75% of the world’s olives, and consequently, olive oil. Olives consist of about 20% oil, and 90% of the olives grown are used in oil’s production. One tree can produce 4.25 quarts of oil annually for centuries. The world consumes over 660,000 gallons every day. About 7.5 quarts of olives are required to produce one quart of oil.

While you’re unemployed, pay only the minimum payments required. If you’ve been prepaying your mortgage principal, pull back to only what’s required. This might be a good time to pare down and sell stuff to raise cash. SLAM THE BRAKES ON SPENDING If it’s not essential, forget it. Tell your family how and why things will be changing for a while, and outline ways everyone can participate in this time of transition. Make do. Look for every possible way you can avoid spending money. FIGURE OUT HEALTH INSURANCE Once you leave your job for any reason, you basically have five choices: -- Continue on your current group plan, and pay the premiums yourself. -- Enroll in your spouse’s plan. -- Buy individual insurance. -- Use a state-sponsored plan. -- Go without (the worst of all worlds). Many people take advantage of their employer’s COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) plan, in which you have 60 days from termination to decide whether or not to accept the benefit. If you accept it within those 60 days, you cannot be denied health insurance. If the COBRA plan is too expensive, at least consider catastrophic-only coverage, which you can research on the internet. This will only cover the big, expensive stuff, but the premium is fairly low. Every state also has a low-cost health insurance plan for children. If you have kids under 18, find out if you’re eligible. Insure Kids Now has a toll-free national number, 877-KIDS-NOW, which connects you with the program in your state. 3 TIPS TO MAKE YOU INDISPENSABLE AT YOUR JOB: No. 1: Improve Your Value Even if you believe it’s not particularly noticed or appreciated, find ways to do more than what’s expected and make yourself more available to your employer. No. 2: Project Positivity People who bring negativity to work and then use it to stir the rumor mill are more likely to wind up on the to-go list. Start thinking like your employer, and then become the employee they want to keep! No. 3: Be a Team Player Commit yourself to be cooperative, flexible and willing to go the extra mile. If you are a joy to be around because you encourage others and make them feel good about who they are, your employer will recognize you as a positive asset to the company -- and your job security goes up. * * * Mary invites you to visit her at EverydayCheapskate.com, where this column is archived complete with links and resources for all recommended products and services. As Charles Dickens sat in a pub trying to dream up a title for his latest novel, he ordered a martini to help him think. "Yes sir, one martini," said the bartender. "Olive or twist?"
20. Today, the only countries that do not use the metric system are the U.S. and the trend-setting nations of Liberia and Burma.
THE
MEASURE FOR MEASURE
METRIC SYSTEM by Janet Spencer
• In 1975 the United States passed the Metric Conversion Act, a bold move by Congress to gradually transition America's units of measurement from feet and pounds to meters and kilograms. Since the U.S. is one of only three countries on the planet using the Imperial System of Measurement, the radical new legislation was designed to bring the US up to speed with the rest of the world. • So why hasn't it changed? The answer is simple; the law was completely voluntary. It meant that anyone who didn't want the hassle and confusion of transitioning from the standard measurements of feet, pounds and gallons over to metrics, didn't actually have to. And since that represented the vast majority of the American public and the US business industry, the metrics movement never took off. • Whether you feel that's a good thing or a bad thing, Tidbits thought it would at least be interesting to look at the metric system to see how it works and what the benefits of using it might be -- and leave it up to you to decide.
• The metric system was invented in France in 1799. A meter was defined as one ten-millionth of the length of an imaginary line from the North Pole to the Equator as it passes through Paris (39.37 inches). Of course you're likely familiar with these elementary facts already, but we'll mention them anyway: It has also been defined as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red light from the isotope Krypton 86, as measured in a vacuum. Today one meter is more accurately measured as the distance travelled by light in a vacuum during 1/299,792,548 of a second.

If you’ve walked the aisles of an animal shelter anytime in the past decade, I’m sure you noticed a breed that tends to dominate in terms of numbers. Hint: They fit in the palm of your hand, have eyes like watery walnuts and look like they’re about to bust out with, “Yo quiero Taco Bell.” What’s wrong with Chihuahuas? Why do so many of them end up at the shelter? The American Kennel Club has this to say about Chihuahuas: “Graceful, alert and swiftmoving with a saucy expression, Chihuahuas are highly intelligent and should not be underestimated even though small in size. The breed can be any color -- solid, marked or splashed -- and the coat may be long or short. These sassy little dogs are well known as ‘purse dogs’ like the famous Bruiser in the Reese Witherspoon movie ‘Legally Blonde.’ Graceful and smart? Travel-ready? Adored by the rich and famous? What’s not to like? The fact that Chihuahuas and other toy dogs end up in shelters in high numbers has nothing to do with the breed and everything to do with this fully unsupported idea that the smaller the dog the less in need of training he is. A horseman doesn’t lead a new horse into his bedroom, feed him breakfast in bed, put little ribbons in his mane and wait for the horse to tell him he needs to relieve himself. And no one brings home a Great Dane and pooh-poohs the notion of housebreaking. I spoke with a man last week who was having trouble with his min-pin. He is tired of cleaning up the messes his dog leaves in the house and is disgusted by the smell of his own home. “How did he housebreak his dog?” you ask. Yeah, so did I. The guy designated his hallway and kitchen, both tiled, the dog’s bathroom. He not only allowed his dog to urinate and defecate in those areas, he encouraged it. And now he’s blaming the dog! The damage created by this kind of negligence on the part of toy dog owners extends far beyond soiled grout, stained tile and ruined carpet. The unfettered yapping of an untrained dog

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
The Good Old Days of Social Security I’ve been writing a book for years now. It’s not going to be a bestseller, and it only has to do with Social Security in a peripheral way. It’s a history of my life, my wife’s life and our lives together (about 47 years so far). I’m writing this collection of stories for my children and grandchildren and for their children and grandchildren. Some of them, no doubt, will find it boring. But I’m sure that a few of my descendants somewhere down the road will be fascinated by it. My wife and I have been amateur genealogists for years now. We can trace our families’ histories back for many centuries. And we can tell you from experience that any kind of written family history is an absolute treasure trove. Both my wife and I had uncles who wrote journals, and we’ve learned so much by reading what they wrote down many decades ago. And the stories in those journals can be so fascinating. For example, you would be absolutely mesmerized by my Uncle Gene’s recollections of his struggles as a Marine on Iwo Jima during World War II. (He was there when they raised the flag on Mount Suribachi. He just didn’t get in the iconic picture that became one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century.) As a retired civil servant (and now a frumpy grandpa), I don’t have any earth-shaking stories like that to share. After all, I spent a good chunk of my life helping people fill out boring old government forms to file for Social Security benefits. Nobody ever took a picture of me doing that and tried to turn it into a statue or a postage stamp! But I did have interesting experiences and a little bit of fun along the way. And I thought I’d share a couple Social Security-related stories with you today. I spent a good bit of my early Social Security Administration career as what the agency called a “field representative.” While the major SSA workforce sat at desks all day and took claims from people who came into a local Social Security office, field reps went out to remote locations and set up shop for a day, usually in a senior center or some other public building in these far-flung towns. In the late 1970s, I was the field representative in the Everett, Washington, Social Security office. And our service area was interesting and varied. It ran from islands in the Puget Sound to little hamlets in the Cascade Mountains. Once a week, I would get on a ferry just outside of Everett and take a trip over to Whidbey Island. There I would go to the senior center in Langley and open up my little mini Social Security office. Inevitably, when I’d get to the senior center, there would already be 20 or 30 people waiting for me. Besides a healthy dose of senior citizens, many of my visitors were young parents (usually mothers) with little kids in tow. You may wonder what they were doing at a Social Security gathering. Well, they were there to get new Social Security numbers for youngsters, or replacement cards for themselves or older children. I purposely point this out because I frequently get emails from older readers who complain that they went to a Social Security office and found the waiting room full of younger people. And they usually say something like this to me: “No wonder Social Security has problems. You’re handing out benefits to young people and even kids!” So if you go to a Social Security office and see lots of

After spending five or we provided was phenomenal! Not only did we go six hours there, I would head back to the ferry with around to every little burg and hamlet and provide my briefcase stuffed with filled-out applications and one-on-one service to the local citizenry, but we also went to people’s homes to take care of their forms. Then, the next day, I would drive up to a Social Security business. That just doesn’t happen little Cascade Mountain hamlet called Skykomish, anymore. And I understand why it is a thing of the Washington, and start the process all over again. A couple of days later, I’d be off to another island past. It was a wonderful way to provide service to (Camano Island). It was a pretty good life. I mean, our customers. But that was 40 years ago. THE OLIVE TREE
• The wood of the olive tree is prized by woodworkers worldwide. It’s a very hard, dense, and durable wood, and contains interesting vivid grain patterns. It is an excellent wood for carving, and its high density makes it extremely resistant to moisture. Because the tree is highly valued for its fruit, is relatively small in size and grows slowly, olive wood is not abundantly available, making its products expensive. It’s used in fine furniture, carved bowls, cutting boards, and other decorative items.
