month-old puppy in the utility room while they left to go shopping. They returned to find their street blocked with police cars and fire engines, and their lovely home a pile of smoldering rubble. Investigators concluded that the pup had somehow nudged on the valve for the gas line, filling the home with natural gas fumes. When the water heater kicked on, the fumes exploded leveling the house in a burst of flames. The pup was somehow hurled clear by the explosion and was later found somewhat singed but otherwise unharmed.

• In 1995, two astronomers were observing a sun similar to ours called 51 Pegasi using a spectrograph. They noticed a pronounced wobble in its orbit which could only be caused by the gravity of an orbiting planet. This planet turned out to be a gas giant about half the mass of our own Jupiter in an extremely close, fourday orbit around the star. A year on this planet lasts only four days.

Bad Dogs (from page one) whistled for his dog to come home one day in February of 2002, he wasn’t surprised to see him trot back proudly while carrying something in his mouth, as was often the case. But this
time Chumbino, his black and white mixed breed, had something in his mouth that Mota didn’t recognize. When he told him to drop
it, the dog released his prize and dropped it to the floor. Mota gasped in astonishment to see a slightly rusted but live hand grenade lying at his feet. He called police, who then called out the bomb squad to safely detonate the grenade in a nearby empty field. Teams of police were then called to comb the neighborhood area in search of any other explosive devices, but none were found. Where the dog found the grenade remains a mystery to this day.

• In all, about a third of the world’s milk production is devoted to making butter. • In the United States, grass-fed dairy products comprise a tiny portion of the dairy sector. Most dairy cows are fed with commercial grain-based feeds. Real butter is higher in vitamin A when the cows have been out to pasture rather than being fed dry feed. The color of the butter depends on the diet of the cow the milk came from. The more carotene a cow gets from eating hay, the more yellow the butter. • A single pat of butter has enough energy in it to melt 2 pounds of ice and bring it to a boil. • You can store butter in the refrigerator for months without it becoming rancid.

A: At some point, any solar company that is going to prepare an accurate, customized proposal will need to have a year’s worth of electric bills and be able to get onto your roof to take precise measurements and shade determinations for potential placement of panels. Renova can help you easily obtain the electric information and will send a solar technician to your home to follow up after an initial roof evaluation done via Google Earth. This will ensure that your system offsets as close to 100% of your electricity as possible, and that there are no surprises during the process. Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded in 2006 that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. American satirist Peter De Vries once said, “There are times when parenthood seems nothing more than feeding the hand that bites you.” With owners of aggressive dogs, the witticism hardly elicits a chuckle. There are many types of canine aggression: food aggression, territorial aggression, fear-based aggression, dominant aggression, protection aggression, predatory aggression, punishment aggression, pain-based aggression. Pinpointing the source of a dog’s aggression is instrumental to developing a safe and effective training regime. But it’s equally important to have realistic expectations about what it means to own an aggressive dog. Take the following letter from a reader: “My 5-year-old German shepherd is fine with my two roommates and me. We could take him by his back legs and drag him around the house if the mood were to strike us. I can remove bones from his mouth and put my hand in his food dish. He comes, leaves it and sits on command. If I tell him to stay, he will literally stay there for hours until I tell him to come here. I thought bringing him to college as my guard dog was a good idea, but it turns out he is too good at his job. “If friends come over, one second they will be petting him, the next they will be trying to fend him off. As soon as I call him off, he leaves, but he has successfully bitten eight people, broken skin three times, attacked countless times and ripped one shirt when he lunged onto a friend’s chest. I don’t understand what kind of aggression this is. Everyone thinks he is a beautiful dog, and he really is! I just can’t believe my peaceful giant has earned the nicknames among our friends (and the guys who do work around our house) as “Cujo” and “devil dog.” Please help me!” Setting Cujo loose in a room full of friends is a good way to make enemies. There are consequences to owning an aggressive dog -- physical, psychological and legal consequences. This is why

Q:
YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Women Married to Jerks If my emails are any indication, there sure are a lot of rotten husbands out there! That’s why I keep telling my wife she should fall down on her knees everyday and thank her lucky stars that she got one of the good guys. OK, I really don’t do that. In fact, if I did say that to my wife, the only reason she might drop to her knees is because she’d be laughing so hard she’d be too weak to stand up! But I can’t help thinking there are a lot of ... well ... let's call them ‘awful’ men out there. That’s because I get more than a few emails from women asking me a Social Security question that involves being married to a jerk. (Oh, and I’m sure there are more than a few nasty women out there, too. But in the 25 years I’ve been writing this column, I’ve never heard from a husband with a Social Security question involving a mean old wife. But again, I hear from wives of rotten husbands all the time). Here are several examples:
Q: I was married to a ver y controlling and aggressive man. We owned a ranch, and I helped him run the operation. After several years of living together and then less than 10 years of marriage, he said I wasn’t pretty enough or smart enough for him, and he filed for divorce. We were married for 9 years and 10 months. I was so soured on men that I never married again after that. He remarried several times. I learned he recently died. I’m 68 years old and am living on a small Social Security check that I earned by doing a variety of jobs over the years. When I called Social Security and asked if I could get any widow’s benefits on his record, they said no. They said I had to have been married for 10 years. I have two questions. No. 1: Is that 10-year rule really the law? and No. 2: Can I get any Social Security credit for those years we ran the ranch together? A:
Let me tackle your second question first. I’m going to assume that in those years that you ran the ranch with Mr. Wonderful, he filed tax returns placing all the income from the ranch under his name and Social Security number. (That’s a very common scenario in self-employment situations. The guy gets all the earnings on his record, and the wife who runs the business with him gets a goose egg!) And there is nothing you can do about that now. The answer to your first question is that the 10-year rule is indeed the law for women trying to get benefits as a divorced spouse. And 10 years means 10 years. Sadly, 9 years and 10 months just won’t cut it. But I can give you a little glimmer of hope. You said you were with this guy for a couple years before you got married. If you can show that you were in a common-law relationship with him during that time, you might be able to say you had two years of a common-law marriage and nine years of a traditional marriage, making more than 10 years combined. But that would only work if you were indeed in a pre-marriage common-law relationship with this guy and if you lived in a state that recognizes common-law marriage. So, check into those things and proceed from there.
After almost 40 years of marriage, my husband left me for a much younger and prettier woman. We’re still married, and I don’t plan to give him a divorce because I want to get back at him by collecting his Social Security. He’s 62 but says he doesn’t plan to file for Social Security until he is 70. He would never let me work outside the home, so I don’t have my own Social Security. I am also 62. How will I be able to get the spousal benefits I’m due if he refuses to sign up for Social Security?
A: You can get the benefits you are due on his record by dumping his sorry butt! As long as you remain married to him, the law assumes he is supporting you, so it won’t let you get any of his Social Security until he files for benefits. And you certainly don’t want to wait until age 70 for that to happen. But if you get a divorce, then you will be eligible for benefits (although not right away). That’s because the law allows a divorced woman to collect spouse’s benefits from her ex-husband’s Social Security record even if he isn’t getting benefits himself. He must be old enough to be eligible for Social Security. And he is, because you said he’s 62 years old. The law does make you wait two years after the divorce before you can collect from the ex. But filing for benefits at 64 is better than waiting until 70. So, see a divorce lawyer and once he is legally out of your hair, wait a couple years and then contact your local Social Security office. And here is another evil thought. Maybe the excitement of being with that “much younger and prettier woman” will cause your ex to have a heart attack and die. Then you will be eligible for much higher divorced widow’s benefits on his account.

were married for 20 years. He maxed out our credit cards, buying all kinds of things (cars, boats, campers, etc.) I didn’t think we needed. Then he ran off with another woman (taking the camper and boat) and left me with all the bills. I was hounded by some pretty aggressive bill collectors, and I finally paid off all his debt. He has no plans to pay me back, so I want to know this: Can I attach his Social Security in order to get back the money that he owes me? By the way, I have worked and have my own Social Security, but it’s a little less than he would be due.
A: It sounds like you need a good lawyer, not a Social Security guy. But since you asked, I’ll address your question. As a general rule, Social Security benefits can only be garnished to collect back taxes or to collect past due child support, so I’m afraid you won’t be able to “attach” his Social Security. But you might want to keep an eye on the obituary listings in his local paper. Why? Because the only way you will be able to touch his Social Security is by collecting divorced widow’s benefits on his account. (You can’t get any of his Social Security while he’s alive because your own benefit exceeds the small percentage of his benefit that you are due). * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books, or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets. it’s imperative that the owners of these dogs keep their expectations firmly grounded. If your dog has bitten, expect that he’ll bite again, particularly if he has not received any training to curb the problem behavior. If your dog has shown signs of aggression -- growling, snarling, biting, snapping -- expect that the possibility of aggression is always there, even if he has been professionally trained. Aggression can’t be cured, but it can be curbed. If your dog’s aggression is triggered by specific behaviors or circumstances, expect that aggression to surface whenever those behaviors or circumstances are in play. It was Einstein who defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Einstein, as we all know, was a very smart guy. Finally, if you know your dog to be aggressive, take reasonable steps to protect your friends, family and neighbors. Confine the dog when you have visitors. Don’t leave food out all day if he’s food aggressive. Keep him on a short leash and possibly muzzled when walking him in the neighborhood. And if you have small children, relocate the dog to an owner who doesn’t. There are things we just don’t do because they are widely known to be dangerous: leave an infant in a car alone, leave a small child unsupervised in a swimming pool, dive head-first off into water of unknown depth. Don’t throw common sense to the wind in dealing with a dog. ANTIQUE -- OR -JUNQUE by Anne McCollam Creators News Service
Victorian Table Reflects 19th Century Ingenuity Q: This is a photo of an antique machine, car ved swing-leg table with the leaf down. It belonged to my great-great grandparents and has been in our family and the same house since the late 1800s. It is in mint condition. Any advice on its value will be greatly appreciated.
A: You have a Weeping Gold set that was popular from the 1940s to the 1960s. The decoration was the result of pouring molten real gold over a textured glaze, thus creating a random dripping pattern. Several factories, including Kingwood Ceramics, Gold Craft, Lemieux, Dixon Art Pottery and Pioneer Pottery, produced weeping Gold. They made vases, coffee sets, figurines, trays, candlesticks, dessert sets and pitchers. Many pieces were marked with paper labels. Pieces that are marked with the name of the manufacturer and also with “22 Karat Gold” command higher prices than those that are unmarked. Because real gold was used, some people attempt to remove the gold. The process is extremely dangerous and should not be attempted. Similar pieces can be found selling in the range of $15 to $35. Weeping Gold dishes were popular in the mid-20th century.

A:
Your table is circa 1880 and an example of the Victorian Eastlake period of design. The mushroom pull on the drawer, incised carving, porcelain castors, distinctive turned legs and overall rectilinear lines are characteristic of Eastlake furniture. The industrial age inspired the era of 19th century ingenuity and innovative designs. A plethora of patented designs burst forth that included platform rockers, extension tables, folding tables and reclining chairs. Your factory-made table would probably be worth $800 to $1200. *** Q: This mark is on the bottom of a tiered ser ving tray and a matching ser ving dish that belonged to my mother. It is decorated with a mottled, uneven gold glaze. There are 3 trays in graduating sizes and all held together by a chrome handle. I don’t remember her ever using the set and don’t know anything about where it

* On July 31, 1715, a hurricane strikes the East Coast of Florida, sinking 10 Spanish treasure ships carrying tons of gold and silver coins and killing nearly 1,000 people. About 80% of the treasures had been recovered by April 1716, but the rest remained lost until the 1960s. * On July 25, 1832, the first recorded railroad accident in U.S. history occurs when four people are thrown off a vacant car near Quincy, Massachusetts. The victims had been invited to view the process of transporting loads of stone when a cable on a vacant car snapped, throwing them off the train and over a 34-foot cliff. * On July 28, 1868, following its ratification by the necessary three-quarters of U.S. states, the 14th Amendment, guaranteeing African Americans citizenship and all its privileges, is officially adopted into the U.S. Constitution. * On July 29, 1921, Adolf Hitler becomes the leader of the National Socialist German Workers’ (Nazi) Party. Under Hitler, the Nazi Party grew into a mass movement and ruled Germany as a totalitarian state from 1933 to 1945. The Nazis controlled every aspect of German life, and all other political parties were banned. * On July 26, 1931, a swarm of grasshoppers descends on crops throughout Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, devastating millions of acres. The swarm was said to be so thick that it blocked out the sun and one could shovel the grasshoppers with a scoop. Cornstalks were eaten to the ground and fields left completely bare. * On July 30, 1976, American Bruce Jenner wins gold in the decathlon at the Montreal Olympics and sets a world record in the event. After his win, Jenner was voted the 1976 AP Male Athlete of the Year. The 1976 Olympics was his last decathlon. In 2015, he became Caitlyn Jenner and is an American media personality. * On July 27, 1981, Adam John Walsh, age 6, is abducted from a mall in Hollywood, Florida, and later found murdered. • At the wedding ceremony at 4:00 p.m. that afternoon and before a packed church, Hillary Feinberg presented Mark Meltz with a wedding band. In return, Mark reached into his vest and pulled out a rolled-up X-ray, which he presented to Hillary with an explanation. His story completely broke the congregation into an uproar of laughter. Meltz’s father stood careful watch over the dog waiting for the ring to reappear while the newlyweds went on their Hawaiian honeymoon. □

Cross Over to Better Putting For years, any deviation from a conventional putting grip was thought to be a sign of a player having the yips or suffering from poor putting in the past. The cross handed, or left hand low, technique should really be considered a norm for any golfer who wants to putt better. If you need any proof, just look at recent Master’s champion Jordan Spieth’s putting statistics. Better yet, look at his putting performance on the world’s most difficult greens under pressure.
STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS
The left hand low set up creates two very helpful mechanics that ordinary putting techniques don’t employ. One, the left wrist becomes flat and can stay that way throughout the entire stroke. Two, the shoulders become more level to the horizon making it easier to swivel the shoulders more consistently. Try using the left hand low technique on shorter range putts to create a feel for the process. Use a conventional grip on longer putts if it ADVERTISING PROOF helps your feel.
