TIDBITS SWEETENS THINGS UP WITH

by Kathy Wolfe

This week Tidbits has some sweet facts about sugar, a compound that occurs naturally in all foods that contain carbohydrates. It's also contained in an array of tasty morsels that are all too tempting for most of us this holiday time of year! SUGAR SOURCES

• There are two sources of sugar; sugar beets and sugar cane. Sugar cane is a perennial grass that requires a frost-free climate with a lot of rainfall, since it takes about 660 gallons of water for every 2.2 pounds of sugar produced. Cane plants grow to a height of ten to 20 feet. During harvest, the cane is cut just above root level, allowing new sprouts to grow for another harvest in ten to 12 months. It’s one of the world’s oldest crops, with the country of New Guinea domesticating sugar cane since around 3000 B.C. • Brazil is the number one producer of sugar cane in the world, originally brought to that country by the Portuguese. By 1540, there were more than 800 Sugar: Turn to page 3

• During his 1492 voyage, Christopher Columbus gathered sugar cane samples in the Canary Islands and carried them to other areas of his journeys. 8 Ways to Jump-start the New Year Feeling a little sluggish about now? Well, Everyday perk up, my frugal friend! Here are eight ways to get a jump on 2024. CHEAPSKATE ®

by Get Mary your Hunt credit reports. AnnualNo. 1: creditreport.com offers the most reader-friendly format, and your personal credit reports from each of the big three credit reporting agencies are free, once every 12 months. You can order online at www.annualcreditreport.com or call 877-322-8228. You can also purchase your credit score for a small fee. Check your reports carefully to make sure all the information is true and correct. Caution: As you go through the process, remember that by federal law you are entitled to your free credit reports. You will be offered lots of purchase opportunities, but just keep saying no to work your way through the process! This will not cost you a penny.

No. 2: Call your insurance companies. If you have homeowners, renters and/or automobile insurance, call those companies this month. Ask if you qualify for any additional discounts. Perhaps your youthful drivers now qualify for good-grades discounts, or you’ve moved to a new zip code. Prod the agent to help you discover how to reduce your premiums. Consider taking this even further by calling several competing companies to get their quotes. Should you find a lower quote, but you are happy with your current company, ask if they will match the quotes you just received from its competitor. You may be pleasantly surprised! And if not, consider making the move. No. 3: Investigate PMI. If you bought your home with less than 20% down, you are probably paying a lot for the dreaded private mortgage insurance (PMI), not to be confused with mortgage insurance, which is not even closely related to PMI. Once your equity reaches 20% of the current market value, you should be able to dump your PMI. Call your lender to find out. Those hor-

No. 4: Find a free checking account. Many credit unions offer free checking with few, if any, conditions or limitations. If you’re paying for access to your own money, change banks. If you are comfortable with online banking, go to bankrate.com and search “free checking account.” Prepare to be surprised by how many choices you have. No. 5: Open a savings account. If you don’t have one, get one. Find a bank or credit union with low minimum requirements. Or refer to No. 4 above. You can also open an online savings account that is fee-free. No. 6: Consider refinancing your mortgage. Call your current lender to inquire about refinancing. But before you make the move, compare the total payback, not just the monthly payment, with what you have already. Granted, as I write, mortgage rates are extraordinarily high. So consider this a suggestion that will at least get you thinking about how your current mortgage situation compares with what is currently available. Rates do drop, and they could start doing that again in 2024. And when they do, you’ll be ready to make that inquiry. No. 7: List assets and liabilities. This is known as one’s net worth and it is simply the amount of money you would have left if you sold everything you own and paid off everything that you owe. Think of this as an academic exercise -- no emotion, no guilt or angst. Simply list everything you own (assets) and everything you owe (liabilities). Next, assign a realistic dollar value to each entry. Subtract your liabilities (debts) from your assets to determine your net worth. Write down that number, even if it is negative. Determine that one year from today you will do this same exercise and then compare. No. 8: Clean up your devices. Your computer needs to be cleaned out and tuned up regularly. If it’s sluggish and behaving badly, you can be sure your cache is jam-packed with extraneous files, your hard drive is fragmented, and your entire system is in desperate need of a good cleanup. Check online for housekeeping instructions for your specific device. * * * This column will answer questions of general interest, but letters cannot be answered individually. ZAMBONI You’ve seen them at Olympic skating events, hockey games and skating rinks as they creep across the ice with about the same beauty and glamor as a railroad boxcar. But what do you know about how these curious and cumbersome machines came about, and how they somehow work to keep ice rink surfaces smooth and shiny? You're about to find out. • Raised in Idaho, Frank Zamboni headed to California to seek his fortune. A skilled mechanic, he designed refrigerator units to keep milk in local dairies chilled. Then he provided railroads with blocks of ice to keep produce fresh during shipping. But by the 1930s, refrigeration technology was improving so fast that the use of block ice was becoming obsolete, and Frank needed a new line of work. • Because he had a warehouse full of refrigeration equipment and mechanical know-how, he decided to build a skating rink next to his ice plant. When he was finished he had a 20,000 square foot facility and enough room to hold 800 skaters. His new ice rink was an immediate hit and it soon became a popular recreation spot.

• In 2001, a Zamboni was driven from St. John’s, Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada across to Victoria, B.C. on the west coast. At about nine mph (14 km/hr), the 4,500 mile (7,242 km) journey took four months.

• When a longtime Zamboni machine operator in the Midwest passed away, his funeral procession was led by a Zamboni machine. □ CLIP AND SAVE

Zamboni Facts

• Before Zambonis were invented, it took several men more than an hour to resurface a standard size ice rink. • There are currently about 11,000 Zamboni machines in use around the world. • During the 2002 winter Olympic games in Salt Lake City, 20 Zambonis were shipped to the Utah site and put to constant use to keep the rinks in top shape to meet Olympic standards. • A Zamboni travels an average of three miles during each hockey game, covering about 2,000 miles per year.

• Frank was making money again, but he dreaded the gruelling, ongoing task of resurfacing the ice. To smooth the rink’s surface, a farm tractor towing a planing device would be slowly driven across the rink, scraping off the chips and gouges. After the shavings were manually swept up, water needed to be sprayed on and squeegeed to provide a smooth new surface. The process took hours on end. • He decided he needed to design a machine to perform this tedious task. It took him ten years to come up with a functional model, which was finally completed in 1949. • When renowned skater Sonja Henie saw it while practicing at his ice rink, she insisted on buying one to bring along with her traveling ice show. Once this was arranged, people everywhere were now able to watch Frank’s invention in action and marvel at its results. Ice rinks all over the country were soon ordering their own. • Frank wanted to name his firm the Paramount Engineering Company, but that name was taken, so he decided to use his own name instead. • In the early days of the Zamboni, the inability of tires to get decent traction on the ice was a constant problem. Frank solved the dilemma by having tire casings re-treated with a mixture of rubber and crushed walnut shells. In the mid-1960s, the invention of steel-studded tires solved the problem for good. • Frank Zamboni also invented the “Grasshopper,” a machine to roll up artificial turf; the “Black Widow,” used to fill in dirt on top of cemetery vaults; the “Astro Zamboni,” designed to vacuum water from Astro-turf; and the “Vault Carrier,” built to lift and carry heavy cement burial vaults.

A: NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street” isn’t available to stream yet, but according to an article on TVLine.com, that could change soon. The series aired in the 1990s and starred Yaphet Kotto, Richard Belzer, Melissa Leo and Andre Braugher. Braugher recently passed away at the age of 61 after battling lung cancer. Party Animal

3. The Weekly “Brain Breaker”

For some, New Year’s Eve is a quiet affair: a night in with a little nosh, some cuddling on the couch and a sip of something sparkling at the magic hour. For everyone else, New Year’s Eve is a party -- a big one. The question, to you party people, is: Should your dog get an invite? If your dog survived Christmas without an emergency trip to the vet or a gastrointestinal crisis, congratulations. You obviously took care to keep him away from the buffet and out of the garbage. But for all the festivities of Christmas, New Year’s Eve is the ultimate celebration for many. The music is loud, the hours are late, the party is on. If you are not hosting, leave your dog at home. Even the most social of dogs would rather be home in familiar surroundings than in a strange place full of strange people behaving strangely. But what if the party’s at your place? Home might not be so sweet for your dog if you are hosting that big New Year’s Eve bash. If your dog is shy or skittish or very young or very old, consider asking a friend, relative or neighbor to let your dog sleep over that night. He doesn’t need the stress. If you’re hosting and you’re convinced that your dog is game for the party of the year, take care to consider his needs in planning your blowout. --Is he microchipped, and is the chip connected to your current contact information? Party people coming and going through front doors and back gates could get sloppy, and stressed dogs run. That’s what they do. Make sure your dog, should he become lost, can easily be returned to you. Current tags and a microchip are key. --Does your dog have access to a quiet, peaceful retreat within your home? If your dog typically sleeps in your bedroom, and that room going to be a coatroom for the night, then set him up in another room, a room that won’t be available to revelers. Put his bed or blanket, his favorite toys and a water bowl in this temporary space, and introduce him to his new setup beforehand. --Exercise your dog the day of the party. A

The Art of

DESIGN by Joseph Publillones

Design Destination: Vicenza No, let’s not confuse Vicenza with Venezia. The latter is a beautiful, world-renowned Italian waterfront town, and Vicenza is the quiet and refined hometown of the architect of all architects, Andrea Palladio. In the northeastern lands of the Veneto region, about a 30-minute train ride from Venice, lies the lesser-known, less touristy town of Vicenza. An interesting thing is that this town is a place of convergence, where Byzantine-influenced Venetian architecture meets the pure and simple classical designs of the master Palladio. For those willing to go to the road less traveled, an architectural education awaits in Vicenza. Vicenza is filled with beautiful piazzas, galleries, churches and Renaissance palaces. In each of these categories, you will surely find Palladio’s hand and vision shaping the landscape and urban envelope. What is remarkable about Palladio is his economy of means to design grand architecture. He was quite the master of buildings constructed with bricks and plaster made to emulate ancient buildings constructed of stone and marble. He was as adept in designing a small infill townhouse, Casa Cogollo, as he was in designing the elegant and majestic Palazzo Chiericati and Palazzo Barbaran da Porto, where the Palladio Museum is housed. Architects and architecture aficionados will always associate Palladio’s work with the five grand rural villas that dot the Venetian flatlands: the Villa La Rotonda, Villa Malcontenta, Villa Emo, Villa Barbaro and Villa Cornaro. These villas are living lessons in proportion, scale and geometry.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Medicare and the ‘Temporarily Rich’ Before I write today’s column, there are two important and seemingly unrelated observations I must make. No. 1: Regular readers of this column know that I don’t like to write about Medicare. Why? Because I’m a Social Security expert, but not much of a Medicare expert. No. 2: It seems like there are a lot of rich (or temporarily rich) baby boomers out there. Why? Very often it’s because they are selling off property they own and suddenly have a huge influx of cash. This observation is based on the unusually high number of emails I’m getting from senior citizens telling me about their newfound financial gains. And why they are emailing me is how I bring the two points I made together. Here is one such email I just got today. “My wife and I are in our 70s. We sold some property last year and we ended up with about a million dollars in capital gains, which we duly reported to the IRS. Now the Social Security Administration has sent us a letter telling us our Social Security benefits are being dramatically cut next year. Why in the world are they cutting our benefits? I thought that once we are over our full retirement age, we can make as much money as we want without any reduction in our benefits.” There is a little part of me that wants to respond to folks like these and say something like: “Hey, you got a million dollars and you’re griping? I sure wish I had your problems!” But here was how I actually replied to this particular couple: First of all, you are mixing an apple with an orange. The apple is the Social Security law that says, as you correctly pointed out, that once you reach your full retirement age, there is no earnings penalty. You can work and earn as much money as you want and your benefits will not be affected. But the orange is a totally different law. It’s a Medicare rule, not a Social Security rule. And in a nutshell, that law says that rich people pay more for Medicare. So, what’s happened in your case is that your Medicare premium is going up in 2024. And because that premium is deducted from your Social Security checks, your net benefit went down. I hope you don’t think I’m splitting hairs here. But it’s important that you understand your Social Security benefits have NOT decreased. You are still getting exactly the amount you are due. But again, your Medicare premium did increase -and probably temporarily. As I said, I don’t like talking about Medicare. But I’ve got to do it here to help you further understand what’s going on. There are two main parts to Medicare. Hospital coverage, or Part A, is free once you reach age 65. (You paid for Part A with the Medicare tax deducted from your paychecks while you were working.) The other main part of the program, called “doctor’s insurance,” or Part B, is paid for by a monthly premium usually deducted from someone’s Social Security check. And even though people always complain about the amount of that premium, $174.70 in 2024, it actually pays for only 25% of the cost of running the program. The tax-

Page 11

payers pick up the other 75%. In other words, senior citizens get quite a subsidy from the government and the taxpayers when it comes to paying for Part B Medicare. So, for years, many people argued that senior citizens should pay a bigger share of the Part B costs. As you might guess, there was a lot of political hemming and hawing on that issue. But eventually, in the early 2000s, President George W. Bush and Congress reached a compromise. They decided that at least wealthy Americans should pay more for their Medicare. How much more depends on a number of factors and on whether you file an individual or joint tax return. To keep things simple, I’ll list the cutoff points for folks filing joint returns -- because most of the emails I get come from couples. The income referred to here is your “modified adjusted gross income,” or MAGI. (Google that if you want to learn more about what MAGI is). --If your MAGI is $206,000 or less, your premium is $174.70. --If your MAGI is between $206,000 and $258,000, your premium is $244.60. --If your MAGI is between $258,000 and $322,000, your premium is $349.40. --If your MAGI is between $322,000 and $386,000, your premium is $454.20. --If your MAGI is between $386,000 and $750,000, your premium is $559.00. --If your MAGI is more than $750,000, your premium is $594.00. Where things get messy and cause the most confusion is for people who are “temporarily” rich. And again, here we are usually talking about folks who sold some land or cashed in some investments. And then it gets messier still because of the tax years involved. Here is an excerpt from something I found on the SSA’s website. “To determine your 2023 income-related

monthly adjustment amounts, we use your most recent federal tax return the IRS provides to us. Generally, this information is from a tax return filed in 2022 for tax year 2021. We’ll update our records.” And this is where things start to get too messy for me to understand or to explain to you. If you want more information, at least I can steer you in the right direction. First, you should do a Google search under this heading: “Premiums: rules for higher-income beneficiaries.” This leads you to an SSA publication that not only explains the rules (and maybe better than I did in this column), but it also gives you your appeal rights if you disagree with the premium increase. And it also tells you that your premium will go back down once your tax returns no longer reflect any big capital gains. A second good source of information is a Medicare expert. They are called SHIPs. That stands for State Health Insurance Program (counselor). To find the SHIP nearest you, go to www. shiphelp.org. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has two books with all the answers. Here’s a run-down of how you can cancel or change many different social media accounts after a loved one dies. Facebook: If your wife used Facebook, you can either “memorialize” or “delete” her account. A memorialized account serves as a place where family and friends can share memories to celebrate the deceased person’s life, with the word “Remembering” shown next to the deceased person’s name. Once an account is memorialized, content the person shared is still visible on Facebook to the audience it was originally shared with, however, the user’s profile will not show up in public spaces such as people you may know, ads or birthday reminders. To memorialize your wife’s profile simply go to Facebook.com/help/contact/234739086860192. Or, if you’d rather have her account removed, go to Facebook. com/help/contact/228813257197480. To memorialize her account requires proof of death (via death certificate, obituary or memorial card), but if you wish to delete the account, you’ll also need to verify that you’re an immediate family member, legal representative or executor, unless you’re the legacy contact on her account. Instagram: The policy on a deceased users’ Instagram account is the similar to Facebook’s, which owns Instagram. You can either memorialize or remove the account at Help.Instagram.com/264154560391256. But just like with Facebook, you’ll need to provide proof of death and relationship to the deceased. STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS

Getting to a good position at the top of the swing is an orchestration of many different parts. Controlling the club’s movement and top position relies mostly on the hands and arms.
