Since the earth’s circumference is about 24,800 miles, that 18 hour flight is almost halfway around the globe! • Driving the long haul to a specific destination requires choosing a route. It’s easy now, but, following World War II the U.S. government was faced with a situation: The good news was that many Americans had started buying cars, but the problem was that there weren’t enough roads on which to drive them. The solution was the Federal Highway System. The major routes are denoted by one or two numbers, and the offshoots, or spurs, from them are routes bearing three numbers. North-south routes bear odd numbers, and east-west routes bear even numbers. Route numbers become larger as one moves from east to west or north to south.

Attorney Lucille Boston has been the victim for over eight years of a horrific new type of real estate identity theft you as a property owner should know about. Orchestrated in the United States and Mexico, this clever “fatal attraction” thief does not flee when discovered, but instead turns on his victim with egregious, life-threatening conduct. This revealing book describes her nightmarish experience as a victim, and shows in legal hindsight how her story could have gone differently had she used preventive tactics. She details these tactics for you along with the legal tools you need to protect yourself from property theft, both in the U.S. and Mexico. Do not be mistaken - it could as easily happen to you!

GEORGE F. HANDEL (from page 2) Musick Hall on April 13, 1742, to a crowd of about 700. Ladies were asked to wear dresses “without hoops” to allow more room to comfortably seat the large audience! By Samantha Weaver

 It was comedian-turned-U.S. Senator Al Franken who made the following sage observation: “Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it’s a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.”  Those who study such things say that 1 percent of the world’s lizard species have no males. The females reproduce by parthenogenesis, which produces offspring that are clones of their mothers.  Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, Sony’s eReader -- it seems that everywhere you look these days people are reading onscreen. You may not realize, however, just how long digital books have been around. The first ebook was manually typed into a computer way back in 1971, when Michael S. Hart, the founder of Project Gutenberg, chose the Declaration of Independence to be the first literature so digitized.  A woman in Tennessee was once arrested for biking while intoxicated -and she was on a stationary bike at the gym at the time.  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you’re like the average American, you drink 22.7 gallons of coffee every year. The surprising thing about that statistic isn’t how much it is, though -- it’s how little. It seems that in the 1940s, Americans were drinking twice that amount of java.  If you look at the innards of a Boeing 747 airplane, you’ll find a whopping 171 miles of wiring.  If you consider surface area covered rather than population, the world’s largest city is in Inner Mongolia, where Hulunbuir covers more than 160,000 square miles. *** Thought for the Day: “Human beings are perhaps never more frightening than when they are convinced beyond doubt that they are right.” -- Laurens Van der Post (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

• The first performance of “Messiah” in England was held almost a year later on March 23, 1743, in London. King George II was in attendance, and with the opening words of the chorus, “For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth,” the King rose to his feet. Following the lead of the King, the entire audience also stood and remained standing through the entire chorus. From that beginning, the custom of rising for the chorus continues to this day. • Handel never married, and kept his personal life as private as possible. He continued to live in London until his death in 1759 at age 74. More than 3,000 mourners attended his funeral, which was given full state honors. He was buried in Westminster Abbey. • London was the center for commemorating the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death in 2009. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) broadcast all of his operas, more than 40 of them, and all of his keyboard suites and cantatas were performed during the annual London Handel Festival. Some of the concerts were performed at St. George’s Hanover Square Church, where Handel worshiped, and at the Handel House Museum at 25 Brook Place, which was his residence for 47 years. • The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic of Mel- bourne, Australia, has performed “Messiah” at least once annually for 157 consecutive years, starting in its founding year of 1853. They hold the world record for an unbroken sequence of annual performances of the oratorio. • George Handel had endured a certain amount of opposition to his music, as gifted and creative artisans often do, and never gained

a great amount of wealth despite his major contributions to music. He always remained faithful to his Lutheran upbringing and steadfast devotion to God. • A closeAd friend, James Smyth, wrote of his death, Proof: “He died as he Touch lived — a good Christian, with Unique 1/16th page, Color, rateand to man, and a true sense of duty to13x God Nov. 21 st, 2010 Volume 6: #48world.” A marble in perfect charity with all the statue of Handel holding the manuscript for the Changes due: 5 pm- Wed. 11/17/10 solo for part three of “Messiah,” “I know that my Redeemer liveth,” stands in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. ■ CLIP AND SAVE

The Fred and Marsha watched a news special about the British Crown Jewels. That night, Marsha dreamed she was wearing a beautiful, large diamond ring. The dream was so real that she asked Fred, “What do you think it means? Fred smiled smugly and said, “You’ll find out at Christmas.” Christmas morning he gave her an elegant package. She opened it with excited, trembling hands to find a book entitled, “Interpreting Your Dreams.”

Hawaii When you think of pineapples, macadamia nuts, orchids and near perfect year-round weather, what state comes to mind? That would have to be Hawaii! Our 50th state was added to the union 51 years ago on August 20, 1959. • The climate of the “Aloha State” is mostly warm, sunny and idyllic year-round. The average daily temperature is highest in July at 82ºF and the lowest in January at 72ºF. The islands are actually the visible tops of tall mountains rising above the sea, with their bases reaching thousands of feet down to the ocean floor. • As with any mountain, the temperature of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea decreases as the eleveation increases. The state’s lowest recorded temperature is 12ºF at the 13,796 ft. summit, recorded on May 17, 1979. The still active volcano is usually snowcapped, in stark contrast to the tropical climate at sea level.

I know, Donna, I know. If our squeaky wheel is loud enough, maybe the networks will listen. These days it seems a safer bet to take a chance on a cable network’s new show -- e.g., the aforementioned “The Glades” -- as cable networks tend to nurture their new shows, not cut and run at the first tiny sign of trouble like network TV. Doable 2011 Resolutions

Q:

I live alone and am facing a hip operation. I have to admit that I am scared. My family loves and supports me, but they live out of state and are not able to be here to help. What suggestions could help me through the drama?

A:

Q:

My husband and I are challenging each other to see who can be the most successful in actually accomplishing our New Year’s resolutions. Over the years, we both have scored about a 35 percent batting average. It’s a game that we both enjoy, and we believe that a partial win is at least better than doing nothing. We’re in our 70s, happy and still in fairly good health. We are also grateful for our family and friends. However, because of so many uncertainties ahead with this new and unpredictable government, the way the economy is going and all the social changes happening so fast, we’re not sure what our priorities should be. I’m curious about what you would put on your list. Do you have any suggestions for us?

A:

First, write down a list of your questions to take to your doctor. Your list should include: How long will it take to recover? How soon can I go home? Do I need to go to a rehab unit for a few days? What medications should I have? Will Medicare and other insurances cover my total expenses? Before the operation, consult your family, friends and neighbors who have actually experienced a hip operation and ask what they recommend for the quickest recovery. Do you have a nursing friend or know someone to ask for advice? What support services and equipment do they recommend? For those experiencing our first convalescence, we usually learn it will cost more than anticipated and it may take longer to recover than we hoped. We also learn how to be grateful for friends and caregivers that can help with meals, pay bills, clean and do laundry. Keep in contact with loved ones by phone, e-mail messages and greeting cards. Recovery can be lonely. Ask a family member to call you on a daily basis. Visit nurse association organizations for more help. Go to www.vnaa.org for more details. Focus on a positive outcome and results of your need for medical help. Do not hesitate to call your doctor if you have questions or experience pain.

Many of us seniors recognize that we are fortunate to be living far better than any previous generation that has reached our age status. And at the same time, no other generation has experienced more changes than we’ve seen. We live in an age that is now so fast paced it is almost mind boggling. Smoking Stand is a Hot Collectible Q:

This is a photo of a smoking stand that has been in my family since the early 1900s. Still in mint condition, it is quartersawn oak with the original finish. The overall dimensions are 16 inches wide by 26 inches tall. There is a brass latch on the front of the caned door -- it reveals one shelf when opened. I’m not sure if the brass dish, which sits in a recessed area, is original to the top. Anything you can tell me about my smoking stand will be greatly appreciated.

A:

You have an Arts and Crafts smoking stand that was made around the turn of the 20th century. Quartersawn oak, corbel supports under the cut and cornered top, and the overall pyramid shape all indicate Arts and Crafts design. Since your stand is in mint condition and has the original finish, it is a very desirable antique. Similar stands often fetch $350 to $450 in antiques shops.

I inherited a set of dishes that are stained from use. My sister-in-law told me to soak them in bleach water to remove the stains. Could you please give me any advice on how to clean my dishes?

A:

Never use chlorine bleach to try to remove stains from porcelain or earthenware. Start by placing a towel in the bottom of the sink to protect the dishes. Fill the sink with a mixture of 1/4 cup of 30 percent to 40 percent strength hydrogen peroxide to 2 cups of warm water. Add mild liquid soap. Soak dishes until stain is gone. Wash carefully and dry. DOLLARS & SENSE: From page 14 based on what you perceive you’re saving. Co-signing loans: On the positive side, you’ll be helping someone establish credit of their own when you agree to co-sign a note. On the negative side -- and it is a big negative -- that credit amount is deducted from your own availability because you are equally responsible for the loan. Giving up the use of credit: The biggest benefit is that you no longer pay interest. That interest can be expensive, especially if the credit is used for items like groceries. You’ll be paying for that dinner for a long time. On the other hand, someday you’ll need credit, perhaps for a big item like a home or vehicle. Without a good credit history, you’re likely to be stuck paying atrocious rates or not be granted credit at all. Closing credit-card accounts: It can be so satisfying to pay off a credit card, and your reaction might be to close the account. Don’t. That credit is part of your overall credit profile because that available amount figures into the calculation of all your credit. When you delete a source of available credit, you change your debt ratio. Before you make any financial decisions, consider any possible consequences. When you find yourself in greenside rough it is important to remember that because there will be some grass between the ball and the club face at impact, it will be harder to stop the ball because you won’t be able to give it as much backspin. So trajectory becomes critical if you don’t have much green to work with and need to stop the ball quickly. To get the ball up higher and to land softer you need the club face to have more loft at impact. But what many players do is try to manipulate the club face throughout the swing in an attempt to get that extra loft at impact. Instead, preset your desired loft at addess by opening up your club face enough to achieve the trajectory needed to get the ball high enough to land softly and stop quicker with less roll. Set up with weight slightly on your front foot, ball up in your stance just a touch, and club face open. You will be able to swing freely and confidently, keeping your left wrist solid (not flippy), without having to manipulate the swing in any way. You’ll find the ball goes higher, stops faster and you don’t have to try to manipulate a thing.

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is HJG<M;LAGF safe. HRS: 2 MIN: • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that KL9EH comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
