The U.S. sends approximately 1.8 billion Christmas cards through the mail each year. • You’ll always find plum pudding on the Christmas menu in Great Britain. When preparing this seasonal dish, the British have a traditional practice of making a wish while stirring the ingredients in a clockwise direction. At Christmas dinner, the pudding is served with little treasures hidden inside that bring their finders good luck. And in case you didn’t know, Britain was the first country to hang up mistletoe. • In Italy, a dinner of several kinds of seafood, sometimes called the “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” is a popular Christmas Eve meal. • A curious tradition takes place in Estonia on Christmas Eve, when large families gather for close togetherness - in the sauna. • The American version of St. Nicholas, or Santa Claus, originally came from the Dutch version called Sint Nikolaas, or Sinterklaas. To the delight of their children, the Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam (New York) brought this fun and lively tradition with them to America. Santa is known throughout the world by many names: Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Saint Nicholas, St. Nick, Pere Noel, Babbo Natale, Pelznickle, Jultomten, Hagios Nikolaos, Svaty Miklas and Joulupukki -- to mention but a few.

Why is Santa said to come down a chimney? Though the idea can be traced back before the famous 1823 poem, “The Night Before Christmas,” written for his own children by Clement C. Moore, most agree that his story popularized the notion of Santa’s arrival through the chimney. In it, Moore describes, “As I drew in my head and was turning around, down the chimney he came with a bound!”

of foul play. With the absence of an official autopsy, and “heart failure” as the only cause of death listed on the certificate, many questions surround the actual cause. Those considered close to Morrison speculate that his death was the result of a heroin overdose.

THE DOORS (from page 2)

By Samantha Weaver

 It was French playwright Albert Guinon who made the following sage observation: “There are people who, instead of listening to what is being said to them, are already listening to what they are going to say themselves.”  Most people at all familiar with the name Max Schmeling know him as the Great Nazi Hope, the boxer produced by Adolf Hitler in the 1930s to defeat Joe Louis, supposedly proving Aryan superiority. (He did defeat Louis in a match in 1936, though he lost a rematch in 1938.) What most people don’t realize, though, is that Schmeling did not subscribe to Hitler’s beliefs -- he wasn’t even a member of the Nazi party. In fact, during World War II, Schmeling risked his life to save two Jewish children.  For reasons that are still unclear, the Supreme Court in 1893 declared that a plant eaten during a main course was a vegetable and one eaten afterward was a fruit.

Gifts & Things

 What do King Henry VIII, sciencefiction author H.G. Wells, English naturalist Charles Darwin, American author Edgar Allan Poe and composer Sergey Rachmaninoff have in common? They all married their cousins.

Boxing Day is a holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada and many other Commonwealth nations. It’s a day spent with family and friends at open gatherings with lots of food, fun and fellowship. And it has nothing to do with pugilism or fisticuffs. • How did the holiday come to be known as “Boxing Day”? Some think the name derives from an old English tradition: In exchange for ensuring that the Christmas Day of wealthy landowners ran smoothly, their servants were allowed to take December 26th off to spend time with their own families. The employers gave each servant a box containing gifts and bonuses (and sometimes leftover food). • In those countries that observe Boxing Day, December 26 is commonly referred to both as Precision Boxing Day Weight and as St.Loss Stephen’s Day. •

• Canadian shops open their doors as early as 6 a.m. on Boxing Day to let in people, who often line up in front of shops during the night. They also refer to this post-Christmas clearance sale week as the “13th month.”

• Many stores have major sales on Boxing Day, and the online version of these deals is sometimes known as Cyber Boxing Day. In the UK in 2008, Boxing Day was the busiest online shopping day of the year. In 2009, many retailers with both online and London’s High Street store locations launched their High Street sales on Boxing Day.

Montgomery Ward, the Chicago-based department-store chain, had been buying and giving away children’s coloring books as Christmas gifts for their customers for years, but in 1939 decided to create its own book to save money. The retailer gave the assignment to one of its employees, 34-year old copywriter Robert L. May, who penned the story of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Some 2.4 million copies were handed out that year. May drew on the story “The Ugly Duckling” and also on his own background (he was often taunted as a child for being shy, small and frail) to create the story of the misfit reindeer. Several names were considered, including Rollo (too cheerful) and Reginald (too British), before May settled on Rudolph as his reindeer’s name. Concerns about Rudolph’s red nose (an image associated with drunkards) also were overcome. Written as a poem in the meter of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” May tested the story on his 4-year old daughter Barbara, who loved it. At about the same time that May was creating Ru-

dolph, his wife died, leaving him deeply in debt with medical bills. However, he was able to persuade Montgomery Ward’s corporate president, Sewell Avery, to turn the copyright over to him in January 1947, ensuring May’s financial security. He quit his copywriting job in 1951 but would later return to Montgomery Ward, where he worked until his retirement in 1971. May died in 1976. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” was printed commercially in 1947, and in 1948 a nine-minute cartoon of the story was shown in theaters. When May’s brother-in-law, songwriter Johnny Marks, wrote the lyrics and melody for the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the Rudolph phenomenon was born. The song was recorded by Gene Autry in 1949 and shot to No. 1 on the charts, selling 2 million copies that year. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” would go on to become one of the best-selling Christmas songs of all time, second only to Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas.” May’s story of Rudolph differed from the one

we know today, made famous by Johnny Marks’ song and the 1964 television special narrated by Burl Ives. In the original story, Rudolph was not related to Santa’s reindeer and did not live at the North Pole, but in an ordinary reindeer village. He was well-adjusted and not regarded by his parents as a shameful embarrassment. He was discovered when Santa noticed a red glow coming from Rudolph’s room as he delivered presents to Rudolph’s house. Worried that a thickening fog would keep him from completing his Christmas Eve rounds, Santa tapped Rudolph to lead his reindeer team. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

The evidence is compelling: Living a hearthealthy lifestyle is not only the best way to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure, but it’s also a way to lower the risk of common cancers and delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Although the prescription of following a hearthealthy lifestyle is a proven way to prevent disease and promote health, the majority of Americans still fail to follow the simple steps of improving heart health. In the hope of reducing America’s risk of heart disease by 20 percent, the American Heart Association published “Life’s Simple Seven,” the steps needed to reduce your risk of heart disease. First, maintain an ideal body weight, which means that your body mass index should be between 18.5 and 24.5. Second, get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly. Next, don’t smoke. Maintain your total cholesterol below 200 and a blood pressure consistently below 120/80. Additionally, keep your fasting blood sugar below 100. Finally, consume at least four or five recommendations for a heart-healthy diet from the AHA. The organization’s diet includes eating at least 4 1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables daily, eating oily fish such as salmon, trout or herring at least twice per week, limiting intake of sweets and simple sugars, consuming three or four servings of whole grains daily, and limiting sodium intake to less than 1,500 milligrams per day. At the 2010 American Heart Association meeting, researchers from University of Vermont examined the real impact of “Life’s Simple Seven” in a study of 18,000 participants over the age of 45. Participants answered detailed phone questionnaires that evaluated their risks of heart disease and told the number of the seven steps they followed over nearly a five-year period. Those who met two or three heart-healthy steps had a 36 percent reduction in risk of death. Those who met four or five of the seven steps were 46 percent less likely to die, and those who met all • Same Beautiful Music you know and love seven had a reduction in risk of death by 54 per• Same format cent. Sadly, pleasing 30 percent of participants met fewer than three of the seven recommendations and less • Familiar on-air personalities than 20 percent didn’t meet any of the seven steps.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

Woman’s Guide Follow-up Two weeks ago, I offered to send a free electronic copy of a fact sheet I wrote called “A Woman’s Guide to Social Security” to any reader who wanted one. The response was overwhelming. I’ve sent out well over a thousand copies so far. That may be an insignificant drop in the bucket for major newspaper columnists who have dozens of people on staff to help respond to inquiries. But I’m a “one-man show” sitting at the computer in our family room at home. I quickly got a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome as I sent out the fact sheet to so many of my readers. I do have a staff of two. That includes my wife, who stops in the room occasionally to bring me a bologna sandwich and a coke. And our cat flops down on my desk demanding to be petted, as I try to answer all the e-mails. If you requested a fact sheet but did not get it, please send another e-mail to thomas.margenau@ comcast.net. I had a problem with my e-mail software and accidentally deleted a large batch of incoming messages. I am what computer techies call a real “PICNIC.” That’s: Problem In Chair, Not In Computer. To be honest, there is a part of me that wishes I’d never written the fact sheet. Not because I don’t like answering all these e-mails. Actually, I enjoy sharing my Social Security knowledge and insights with my readers. But the responses I received and the follow-up questions I got after people read the fact sheet confirmed what I already knew going into this project: Each and every person has a unique set of circumstances involving his or her potential eligibility for Social Security benefits. Balancing Health and Fun Q:

will take some time to discuss it with you. Remember that doctors work in teams, and how they treat their staff makes a big difference in the way that you are also treated. Observe the interaction while you are in the waiting room. If there’s an emergency, we need all the help, cooperation, caring and empathy we can get. Search for a doctor who listens to your questions and in whom you feel you can have confidence. People skills are important, but some patients don’t care even if the doctor is gruff, so long as he or she is a certified expert in the medical areas that concern you. Doctors in today’s fast-paced world have little time for idle chitchat, so stay focused on why you are there. In the final analysis, it is you who pays the bills. If you do not understand something or feel you need more information, do not be afraid to ask the doctor to repeat or give you more details about your health condition. That’s a doctor’s job!

We are retired and both in our late 70s. Since there are so many things we would like to accomplish while we still can, we’ve developed the habit of making long to-do lists. Although we know we will be unable to accomplish some of them, such as cruising around the world, we believe these goals help lift our spirits and keep our attitudes positive. else, know what your needs are and what makes you happy. You have a great attitude and are a good example for other seniors to follow. However, at some point when you feel you are slowing down, consider making changes, such as shortening your lists, taking afternoon naps, cutting back on the length of your walks, doing a little less volunteering and reducing other actions that require energy and time. A high priority should always be to budget daily time to allow for fun, laughter and recreational distraction. During doctor’s checkups, keep him or her informed of your activities and how they may be effecting your health. By doing so, he or she can help you to properly balance your medications and activities. Your positive attitude and happiness indicates that you are both “happy campers”. Keep it up! * * *

The soldiers of Germany, Russia, France and Britain exchanged presents of cigarettes and plum puddings and even played a good-natured game of soccer.  On Dec. 21, 1945, Gen. George S. Your chairs are excellent examples of Victorian Rococo Revival. You are correct that they were made around 1860. The hand-carved, fruit-crested balloon back, serpentine stay rail and cabriole legs are representative of the Victorian Rococo Revival sub-style. Many similar chairs are selling in the range of $400 to $500 each. Depending on the region and demand, they can go considerably higher. You have made a very good buy.

Q:

Could you please explain the definition of “pressed glass”?

A:

Pressed glass is also called pattern glass. It is clear or colored glassware that has been formed by a pressing machine, which has a plunger that pushes molten glass into a mold. Deming Jarves, owner of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Co., was one of the first to employ a glass pressing machine in the early 1800s. Myriad factories produced pressed-glass table services that included pitchers, butter dishes, tumblers, spoon holders, creamers, sugar bowls, cruets and compotes. Collectors find the variety of patterns and the reasonable values appealing. * * *

The classic film captures the essence of the Christmas spirit, the priceless value of our lives, and the ways that we unkowingly effect the lives of others around us. • Originally considered a box office flop at the time of its release, the film has come to be regarded as a classic and a staple of Christmas television around the world. Scammers have figured out how to read the code on a card, call the toll-free number on the back, and then spend the money you paid for the card. Instead of buying a pre-loaded card, get a blank card from a clerk or customer services and have the amount loaded while you wait. Then hold on to your receipt in case something happens. For the Internet-savvy recipient, consider an e-gift card, also known as a virtual gift card. You e-mail a special code to the recipient, who prints it out and takes it to the store. It spends just like a plastic gift card. Be careful of the store: If it goes bankrupt, the gift cards you buy might be worthless. Consider giving cash instead. While it’s estimated that nearly 30 percent of gift cards go unused every year, nobody loses track of cash. But unless you are practicing efficiently, your results will be slow and disappointing. I see many golfers get to the golf course early and practice certain elements of their games that they think they need to work on, but once they get out onto the golf course they find that they are struggling with a cmpletely different element of their game. To better manage your time and the effectiveness of your practice sessions, practice after your round of golf instead of before. Of course, it’s still a good idea to warm up, but just enough to get loose and have a feel for what kind of shot you showed up with that day. Don’t try to overhaul your swing before you hit the first tee box. Take detailed notes of how you played each hole land then look for a pattern. If you notice you’ve missed a lot of fairways, hit the practice tee after your round and hit a bucket of balls with your driver. If you had a lot of 3-putts because of lack of distance control, head to the practice putting green and work on your feel. Not only will you be working on the area of your game that needs the most improvement, but you are building your confidence for your next round of golf.
