interviewed attorneys and coroners, and visited jails and prisons to interview convicts. She pored over crime stories in the newspapers looking for ideas. • She wondered why all the hard-boiled detectives were male. Why not have a female detective? Thus Kinsey Millhone was born. Her name was taken from the birth announcements in the newspaper. Her hometown of Santa Teresa is a thinly disguised version of Grafton’s home of Santa Barbara. Looking through an Edward Gorey cartoon book gave her the idea for serializing her mysteries after reading his alphabetized rhymes: “A is for Amy who fell down the stairs; B is for Basil, eaten by bears…” It reminded her of her father’s books.

Week of August 22, 2021
Naming Towns (from page one) • So much mail was being sent to Mount Tabor, South Carolina, instead of Mount Tabor, North Carolina, that residents in South Carolina dropped the “Mount” from their name and spelled “Tabor” backwards to become the town of Robat. So there! • Finally, on September 4, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison established the U.S. Board of Geographic Names and appointed ten men to bring order out of the chaos.
Page 3
town of Thurber and the town of Grayson both jumped at the chance. What to do? Bicknell named one town after himself and the other town after his wife, whose maiden name was Blanding. The books had to be divided up between the two town's libraries.
new town after him. However, the humble Mr. Ralston felt he was not worthy of such an honor and declined. Impressed with his modesty, officials instead named the town Modesto. SECOND THOUGHTS
• Pioneer Ezra Meeker thought his hometown of Franklin, Washington, was a boring name. He decided to change the name to the Indian word Puyallup just because he liked it. It’s an Indian word meaning “generous people.” No one objected, so Puyallup it is.
TOWN TACTICS
by
1. W s m s
• When Dr. Elijah Dix made the same proposal to a Maine community in 1803, the town was named Dixfield in his honor. The townfolk were outraged when they found that Dr. Dix’s “library” consisted of a single crate of outdated medical texts. But the Dixfield name stuck anyway. STRANGE NAMES
A town in Kansas could not agree on a name, so they decided to settle the matter with a poker game, and the winner would decide. E.H. Cawker won the game, and the town is now called Cawker. The Cawker Chamber of Commerce now boasts their main tourist atttraction: The world's largest ball of twine.
• Twin Forks, Washington was in dire financial straits when it was suggested they rename the town after some well-known and wealthy American personality. They reasoned that once informed of the honor, the rich individual would gladly endow a huge sum of money to the city coffers and thus save the town. George Pullman, inventor of the Pullman railroad car, was chosen. They sent him a letter announcing the name change and advising of their financial plight, then eagerly awaited his response. buying on any particular day. It all depends on trends and what a particular buyer believes is hot for its particular audience. Rather than try to find all of the individual companies that purchase used textbooks yourself, I suggest you go to BookScouter.com. This is a one-stop shop that searches more than 20 different online book buyers with one click. You’ll quickly discover which book dealer, if any, is interested in buying the texts you have. With that kind of an audience looking at what’s on your bookshelves, I think you have a decent chance to make quite a few sales. Most buyers make it easy to send the books by paying for shipping and allowing you to simply print a prepaid mailing label. Just keep in mind that IT is a quickly-changing field. Good luck. I hope you can make a lot of sales. Dear Mary: I enjoy your column and just read about life insurance. My husband and I and are both 64 and retired last year. We live on our social security plus investment income from 401(k) and SEP/IRA accounts. We don’t have a lot of “extra” income, but we live frugally and are doing fine. I have a $250,000 term life policy and my husband has a $150,000 term policy. Should we keep these or reduce our monthly expenses by cancelling them? -- Gail Dear Gail: There is only one reason to have life insurance and here it is: To replace income that would disappear upon your death. Specifically, that would be minor children, and perhaps elderly parents you support financially who are so dependent that without your financial support, would become financially destitute. Let’s look at your situation. You do not mention any dependents, such as children, grandchildren or elderly parents who depend on your income. That leaves each of you. If your husband were to precede you in death, even with the provision that you would continue to receive the higher of your two Social Security monthly benefit checks, would the loss of the smaller monthly check put you into a financially difficult position? If you answer yes, then life insurance is an excellent way to replace that income that will go missing and upon which the remaining spouse will depend. As for the funds in your 401k and SEP/ IRA accounts, either of your deaths should not affect them, provided you have named each other as beneficiaries. Once you have determined the monthly income you will need to replace upon either of your deaths, if any, multiply that by a reasonable life expectancy of the remaining spouse. That is a good estimate of the amount of term life insurance each of you need. I suggest you leave the policies in place for now while you do your own independent research. As we age, life insurance becomes more expensive and many companies require a health exam as part of the application process. I wouldn’t cancel any term insurance until you are confident a remaining spouse will be well protected without it. * * *

• It was long assumed that Ötzi died of exposure. However, in 2001, a CT scan revealed an arrowhead buried deep in his shoulder bone, the scapula. There was a matching rip in the shirt he was wearing. The location of the wound would have been fatal even with modern medical help, as it sliced a major artery and pierced his lung. Further examination revealed a deep cut to his hand that had happened shortly before death, possibly during hand-to-hand combat. The wound had been treated with a medicinal moss but had not healed when he died. Ötzi also suffered a head injury, which may have been a result of him falling after being struck by the arrow. He also had many bruises. It appeared that Ötzi was a victim of murder. • Someone had pulled the arrow shaft out of Ötzi’s shoulder, leaving the arrowhead behind, buried in bone. A: Read reviews of local companies who offer purchase and lease options. You do not want to get locked into a “Power Purchase Agreement.” This would require you to pay out a certain monthly percentage for your electricity useage, and that payment will continue to escalate year after year. Choose a couple of companies to speak with, and be ready to show a year’s worth of your current electric bills. This, along with with your roof size and shade measurements will ensure that a customized, accurate proposal can be prepared. If solar makes sense for you, sign up and enjoy the savings!

If you were on a boat in the middle of the ocean and you noticed a shark circling your boat, would you jump in the water? No. Would you feel scared or threatened? You bet. An animal circling something is in predator mode, and whatever he is circling is potential prey. It is no different when the parties involved are a dog and a baby. Charging can be an aggressive action. Growling is a clear and certain warning of escalating aggression. This couple has a tough decision to make. Their choices are: -- Find a new home for the dog. -- Find a new home for the baby. -- Find a way to keep the two away from each other 100 percent of the time. They were hoping to train the dog and eliminate the behaviors through training. But timing is everything. Baby is already crawling, and Barnie is Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 8

“We have a 7-month-old baby who is learning to crawl. When she starts moving, our 10-yearold Ridgeback/Pit bull mix gets anxious and starts circling her. Every once in a while when she is moving, he will charge at her and nudge her with his nose. Sometimes he will growl when he does that. Mind you, we do not let her crawl around without us there, and we push him away when we see him charging at her. “He was OK with her until she started crawling. He follows us with her everywhere. Even when she is sleeping in her crib, he has to be in the room with her. He won’t leave her side. We feel that he is protecting her. When she is crawling, it is a different story. “‘Barnie’has had a tough life. We rescued him at 2 years old, and we were told at the shelter that he was beaten as a puppy. “As for the baby, it seems like he is protecting her until she gets on the ground. Should we be worried about him charging her? What does that mean? Is he scared or threatened by her? Any suggestions would be appreciated.”

is that you either get your own Social Security retirement benefit or between one-third and one-half of your husband’s rate, whichever pays more. In your case, your own benefit is much higher than 33 to 50% of your husband’s benefit, so you just keep getting your own Social Security check.
YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
You Misunderstood What I Wrote I’ve been explaining Social Security rules to people for almost half a century now, and I’ve been writing this column for almost a quarter century. I think I do a pretty good job of helping people understand Social Security rules and regulations, and I do it in simple and easy-to-understand language. So I’m always surprised when I get questions from readers who have misinterpreted something fairly straightforward from a past column. For example, I can’t tell you how many times I have written that a woman will get a benefit as a spouse on her husband’s record only if it pays a higher rate than her own retirement benefit. And then I get dozens of emails from readers who say something like: “In your recent column, you said all wives should get spousal benefits on their husband’s record.” That’s just one example. Here are some more. (And you will notice that each of my answers is going to start off with the phrase: “You misunderstood what I wrote.”)
Q: In a recent column, you said a wife can take part of her husband’s Social Security, and then at 70, switch to her own benefits. I thought that was a good idea, so I called the Social Security toll-free number to set that up, and they said I could not do that. What’s going on? A: You misunderstood what I wrote. If you go back and re-read that column, you’ll see that I was referring to widows. A widow can take reduced benefits on one record and later switch to higher benefits on another record. For example, if she is not working, she could take about a 70% widow’s rate at age 60, and at her full retirement age, switch to 100% of her own benefit, or wait until 70 and switch to 132%. Or she might be ahead to do it the other way around. She could take a 75% reduced retirement benefit on her own record at age 62 (the earliest you can get retirement benefits) and switch to a 100% widow’s rate at her full retirement age. Note that there is no extra bonus for delaying widow’s benefits until 70. So again, a widow can do that. But a woman whose husband is still alive can’t do that. She must always file for her own Social Security benefit first.
Q: In a past column, you said that a woman who remarries after age 60 can still Q: I am 66 and get my own Social Se- get her ex-husband’s Social Security. I waited curity. I get $1560 per month. A: You misunderstood what I wrote. And there is nothing to retract. You made the same mistake the person as the prior questioner did. In that past column, I wrote that a widow who remarries after age 60 can continue to receive benefits from her first husband’s record. You’re not a widow. Q: In a past column, you said that a wife can get benefits on her husband’s Social Security record even if he isn’t yet claiming Social Security himself. I am 62 and have never worked outside the home. My husband is also 62. He plans to wait until 70 to file for Social Security. I called Social Security, and they said I can’t file for benefits until he files. I told them what you wrote, and they said you are wrong. How can you mislead your readers like that? A: You misunderstood what I wrote. And I didn’t mislead anyone. Please go back and check that past column. You will note that column was about divorced spouses and what they are due from Social Security. A woman who is divorced can claim benefits on her ex-husband’s record even if he hasn’t filed for Social Security. He has to be at least 62 years old, but he need not have applied for benefits yet. But for reasons too messy to explain in today’s column, a woman who is currently married to her husband, as you are, must wait until he is collecting Social Security before she can file for benefits on his record. And by the way, your potential eligibility for spousal benefits might be an incentive for your husband to consider signing up for benefits before age 70. Q: In a past column, you said that the full retirement age is 66 years old and two months. But my full retirement age is 66 years old and four months. Please explain the discrepancy. A: You misunderstood what I wrote. I said that the full retirement age for someone born in 1955 is 66 and two months. If you were born in a different year, you have a different full retirement age. There is a chart listing the various FRAs in my Social Security guidebook (see ordering instructions below). * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Mar-

How to Buy the Best Blood Pressure Monitor for You

Where to buy: You can find blood pressure monitors at pharmacies, medical supply stores or online, and you don’t need a prescription to buy one. Prices typically range between $40 and $100. In most cases, original Medicare will not cover a home blood pressure monitor, but if you have a Medicare Advantage plan or a private health insurance policy it’s worth checking into as some plans may provide coverage. The best automatic arm monitors as recommended by Consumer Reports include the Omron Platinum BP5450 ($75), Omron Silver BP5250 ($50) and the Omron 10 Series BP7450 ($100); A&D Medical UA767F ($45); and Rite Aid Deluxe Automatic BP3AR1-4DRITE ($37). And the top wrist monitors are the Omron 7 Series BP6350 ($80); and the Equate (Walmart) 4500 Series ($40). After you buy a monitor, it’s a good idea to take it to your doctor’s office so they can check its accuracy and teach you the proper techniques of how and when to use it. You can also get more detailed information on how to accurately measure your blood pressure at home at Heart.org/HBP – click on “Learn How to Monitor Your Blood Pressure at Home.” ***

sets of surveyors to tell him what they thought. Neither team knew about the other. Deakins was amazed when both groups recommended the very same plot of land. Deakins considered this an accident of fate and dubbed the land “The Accidental Tract.” Today the town that grew there is known as Accident, Maryland. But the Highway Department has trouble keeping their interstate signs from being stolen. The signs read, “Accident Ahead.”
• Settlers in Massachusetts were trying to think up a name for their town when someone pointed out that if you started digging a hole in Massachusetts all the way through the planet, you’d come out in Canton, China. They suggested it would be symmetricaly proper to have a town named Canton at each end of the hole. With no other name suggested, Canton, Massachusetts it became. • After residents of a town in Virginia argued hotly and stubbornly over an appropriate name, it was finally decided the only thing to do was to name it Disputana. • Hop Bottom, Pennsylvania was so named because of all the wild hops growing in the nearby bottomland. • A town in Tennessee wanted to name itself after the Biblical town of Jericho, but a clerk with bad handwriting filled out the form, and today the town's official name is Jellico. • Montana once had a town called Pair o’ Dice. When more respectable people moved in, the name was changed, and it's now Paradise. • In 1887 settlers in Washington state named their town Slaughter after Lt. W. A. Slaughter, who had played a prominent role in the Indian wars of the area. But as the town grew and new businesses sprang up, local jokes about the name were rife. It was decided to rename the town Auburn when a new hotel opened and the owner objected to calling it “The Slaughter House.” □
