Now the eel enters its third phase of life, becoming a yellow eel which is muscular and strong. It grows up to a couple feet in length and weighs up to several pounds.

• Once the eel picks out its new freshwater home, it will stay within a few hundred yards of that spot, sometimes for decades, even up to 50 years. If caught and released elsewhere, it will quickly return back to that same place.

HOMECOMING JOURNEY

• Eventually, usually after 30 or 40 years, the yellow eel decides it’s time to procreate. It starts an epic journey back to the ocean, returning to the eastern coast of the U.S. and the Sargasso Sea. Along the way, it transforms once again for the fourth and final time, turning into a silver eel.

• Up to this point, the eel has never had any reproductive organs. There was no way to tell a male from a female. But as it crosses the ocean, the eel’s digestive system shuts down, sexual organs grow, and it develops reserves of either roe (eggs) or milt (sperm).

• At the rate of up to 30 miles per day while swimming at a depth of up to 3,000 feet deep, it takes at least six months for the eel to make it back to the spawning ground of the Sargasso Sea. Once there, it mates, and dies.

• In 1876, a researcher sent one of his assistants to Trieste, Italy, to spend an entire month doing nothing but buying eels at the fish market and dissecting them in a search for sexual organs.

That research assistant was Sigmund Freud, who was 19 years old at the time. He never found what he was looking for. It wasn’t until 20 years later that a sexually mature male eel was found in the Mediterranean Sea near Sicily.

All that we call eels are not created equal. While similar to a true eel in appearance, the electric eel of South America is related to carp and catfish. Armed with three organs called electrocytes, they create an electrical current of up to 600 volts that are released when threatened.

mover. This stain remover recipe is so easy and cheap to make. And, wow, does it perform!

Unlike some other homemade laundry stain and detergent products you’ll find here at Everyday Cheapskate, this one is also a homemade stain remover for carpet. Ah-ha! That got your attention!

Just let me be clear at the get-go that while this stain remover works super well on fabric, upholstery and carpet in the house and car, it must be rinsed well or laundered once that stain disappears. Got that? OK. Let’s get right to it:

INGREDIENTS

You will need fresh hydrogen peroxide, Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid, a clean, empty spray bottle (any size) and a funnel (optional).

INSTRUCTIONS

Into a spray bottle, using a funnel if desired, pour one part Blue Dawn and two parts fresh hydrogen peroxide, i.e. 1 cup Blue Dawn and 2 cups hydrogen peroxide OR 2 tablespoons Blue Dawn and 4 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide. The ratio is important.

This means that you can use any size bottle to make up any amount of laundry stain remover you need or want. On a personal note, I prefer a dark amber spray bottle because it helps to protect the hydrogen peroxide from light.

TO USE

Shake bottle to mix. Apply to stain. Wait a few minutes.

Don’t be surprised when that stain disappears all by itself! Or, if not, rub the stain with a brush or clean white cloth. (You don’t want to transfer color from a cleaning cloth to the stained item).

Launder the item as usual. If treating carpet or upholstery, use sparingly then rinse and blot with clear water. Keep in mind that you’ve just sprayed full-strength dishwashing detergent

on that sofa, chair or carpet, and it needs to be completely removed before you're done.

This DIY laundry stain remover is a miracle worker all around the house. I use it to pretreat stains on kitchen and bath linens, clothes, carpet, rugs, my white sofas and dining room chairs. It tackles red wine stains, organic stains such as blood and grass, and pet and baby stains, too. You can use this on colored items as well as whites. (Always test first in an inconspicuous place).

Q: “Do I have to use Blue Dawn or can I substitute something else?”

A: You can substitute any kind of liquid dishwashing soap, although I wouldn’t use anything other than Blue Dawn unless it’s an emergency. That’s because Blue Dawn contains specific surfactants that are far more effective on grease and oil than any other product in its class. And if you use Blue Dawn Ultra, your results will be even more spectacular because the Ultra version contains enzymes. That makes it really effective on proteins, which most household stains contain.

Q: “Why do you specify “fresh” hydrogen peroxide?”

A: Hydrogen peroxide dissipates in the presence of light -- both sunlight and household light. It loses its effectiveness. If you use an old bottle of hydrogen peroxide that you’ve had sitting on the shelf for years, you might as well just use water. It’s worn out, lost its spunk. Keeping your bottle of homemade stain remover in an amber bottle will help to protect it from light.

Storing the bottle in a dark cupboard will protect it even further. The rule of thumb is this: Once opened, keep hydrogen peroxide tightly sealed in a dark place and use it within 6 months.

A: My first guess would have been “Midnight, Texas,” but that premiered on NBC in 2017.

It starred Francois Arnaud (“The Moodys”) and was based on a series of books by Charlaine Harris of “True Blood” fame.

However, back in 1995, there was a show called “American Gothic” that better fits your timeline. It starred Gary Cole as a demonic sheriff of a small South Carolina town and Sarah Paulson as a ghost. Lucas Black played her younger brother.

The series was created by Shaun Cassidy (yes, that Shaun Cassidy of the Gary Cole on “NCIS” “Hardy Boys”) and was a hit with critics, but it was canceled by NBC after just one season. Incidentally, Cassidy has gone on to be quite a successful producer, having consulted on the current hit medical drama “New Amsterdam” as well as the long-running police drama “Blue Bloods.”

“American Gothic” was Paulson’s first major television role, but she’s now known for being producer Ryan Murphy’s muse in his “American Hor-

Serve this light, lemony vegetable saute with roast chicken or a light fish dish.

Salt-Baked Fish

Baking a whole fish in a crust of kosher salt seals in the juices and guarantees an exquisitely moist -- and surprisingly unsalty -- delicious fish dinner.

4 cups kosher salt

1 whole (1 1/2 to 2 pounds) red snapper, striped bass or porgy, cleaned and scaled

1 lemon

3 sprigs rosemary or thyme

1. Preheat oven to 450 F. Line 13-inchby-9-inch baking pan with foil; spread 2 cups salt in bottom of pan.

2. Rinse snapper inside and out with cold running water; pat dry with paper towels.

From lemon, cut 3 slices. Cut remaining lemon into wedges. Place lemon slices and rosemary in cavity of fish. Place fish on bed of salt; cover with remaining 2 cups salt. Bake until fish is just opaque throughout when knife is inserted at backbone, about 30 minutes.

1/2 pound Chinese pea pods (snow peas)

1 tablespoon salad oil

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 large lemon

1. Cut green onions into 1-inch pieces.

Slice celery diagonally into thin slices. Cut each radish in half. Remove stem and strings along both edges of each pea pod.

2. In nonstick 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat, in hot salad oil, cook green onions, celery, radishes, pea pods and salt until vegetables are lightly browned and tender-crisp.

With any new puppy come certain predictable realities. There may not be blood, but there will be challenges:

1) There will be chewing.

Puppies, like babies, teethe. It’s a painful process that most of us have zapped from our bank of childhood memories. But in search of relief from the intense pressure of new teeth forcing their way out, puppies chew and gnaw -- on furniture, on shoes, on anything that feels good to their aching mouths.

The solution is to provide your pup with something that feels good but isn’t potentially harmful and doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars to replace. The perfect chew toy for a teething dog? A frozen washcloth.

Soak several washcloths and store them in your freezer. Whenever your puppy puts his teeth to anything you’d rather he not, take the item away and immediately sub in a frozen washcloth. His sore gums will feel immediate relief, and the previous item will fade from memory like so many forgotten baby teeth. Ice cubes also do the trick.

The pain of teething also brings nipping and mouthing. Nipping is a diminutive bite. Mouthing is the constant placement of the dog’s mouth on some part of you -- hand, leg, ankle, arm. Both habits can lead to biting if not corrected, so keep the washcloths coming.

2) There will be elimination.

Eliminating bodily waste is an act of nature -- like breathing. We as dog owners must understand that he doesn’t care where he goes -- we care.

Thus, it is our job to teach him what we want. And so we must first make a choice: outside or inside?

Housebreaking your puppy means he goes outside and only outside. Paper training entails teaching him to go inside the house, in a specific area. I strongly recommend housebreaking. Once a dog gets the go ahead to eliminate inside, it’s difficult to switch gears.

Once you and your vet have determined the proper diet for your pup, you’ll want to establish a consistent feed-water-walk schedule: He eats according to schedule, drinks according to schedule and is taken outside on the heels of either activity.

Should an accident occur, clean the area thoroughly, and immediately take the dog outside and praise him.

Accidents are not cause for punishment.

They are opportunities for learning. Rather than accentuating your displeasure when he gets something wrong during the early leaning stages, focus on demonstrating how pleased you are with his corrected behavior.

3) There will be leash resistance.

Most of us know better than to throw a saddle on a horse that’s never worn one and hop on. A leash to a dog is no more natural. Dogs don’t come with diplomas. We must be patient with them as they adjust to all our wacky expectations.

The best way to gently introduce the leash to your pooch is to fasten a lightweight model to his collar and supervise as he wears it around the house. This allows him to get used to the weight around his neck. Play fetch with him, have him walk to his food bowl and eat, and do any number of normal activities; however, do not ever leave him alone with the leash on.

Once he’s had time to warm to the idea, take him on a walk. Allow him to pull you. Tugging on the leash while it’s attached to his neck is no way to make him enjoy wearing one. He’ll learn to stop pulling once he begins obedience training and learns “heel.” Until then, cut the little guy some slack and have fun.

How a Social Security Benefit Is Figured -For Beginners and for Experts

There are some columns I could repeat over and over again -- because I’m asked the same questions over and over again. One of the most common questions I’m asked is this: “How is my Social Security benefit figured?” I’ve answered this question many times in past columns, and I’m going to do it again today.

This answer will be in two parts. The first part will provide a relatively simple explanation of the process. It is for those people (probably the majority of my readers) who want a general idea of how their benefit will be figured. They just don’t need or want to know all the nitty-gritty details. The second part of the answer will be for those who want to know it all and want to become experts in the Social Security benefit computation formula.

So, let’s start simple. In a nutshell, a Social Security retirement benefit is a percentage of your average monthly income using your highest 35 years of inflation-adjusted earnings.

When you file for retirement benefits, the Social Security Administration will look at your earnings history and pull out your highest 35 years. They don’t have to be consecutive. If you don’t have 35 years of earnings, the SSA must plug in an annual salary of “zero” for every year you did not work, until the 35-year base is reached.

However, before they add up those “high 35,” they index each year of past earnings for inflation. And this is where the formula gets just a little messy. That’s because there is a different adjustment factor for each year of earnings, AND each year’s adjustment factor is different based on your year of birth.

Here is a quick example. If you were born in 1955 and earned $32,400 in 1982, they would multiply those earnings by an inflation adjustment factor of 3.31, meaning they would actually use $107,244 as your 1982 earnings. But if you were born in 1956 and earned that same $32,400 in 1982, they would use an inflation factor of 3.35, resulting in $108,540 as the 1982 earnings used in your Social Security computation.

You can find a complete breakdown of those inflation adjustment factors for each year of birth (for folks nearing retirement age) at the Social Security Administration’s website: www.socialsecurity.gov.

The next step in the retirement computation formula is to add up your highest 35 years of inflation-adjusted earnings. Then, you divide by 420 -- that’s the number of months in 35 years -to get your average inflation-adjusted monthly income.

The final step brings us to the “social” part of Social Security. The percentage of your average monthly income that comes back to you in the form of a Social Security benefit depends on your income. Simply put, the lower your average wage, the higher percentage rate of return you get. Once again, the actual formula is messy and varies depending on your year of birth. As an example, here

Sideboard Inspired by Charles Eastlake

Q: Enclosed you will find a photo of an oak sideboard. It was made in England and was in my sister’s antiques shop. When she closed the shop in 1986, I purchased it for $500. It is in mint condition, and the pulls are the original ones. The top is decorated with car ved swans, and both doors have car ved urns. Below the mirror is a shelf.

I hope you can provide some information on the vintage and value of my sideboard.

A: You have a good example of an oak sideboard made in the Eastlake period of furniture in the late Victorian Era. It was factory made in England. The style was inspired by Charles Eastlake, the English designer around 1870. He believed the Victorian ornate curvilinear furniture to be excessive and advocated a return to simpler and unador ned designs.

His ideas quickly spread to America and factories began pr oducing Eastlake furniture in large quantities. The scrolled Eastlake period of furniture began around top, mir1870 and lasted until 1900. ror, shallow carvings, turned pillars on either side supporting the top and the overall design consisting of straight lines (with the exception of the scrolled top) are typical of the Eastlake period. By the early 1900s, the style had faded.

Your sideboard was made around 1890 and would probably fetch $2000 to $3000. ***

Q: I have enclosed a drawing of the mark seen on a set of china that I inherited from my aunt. Also included with the mark

are the words “Castleton China -- Dolly Madison -- Made in USA.” The set is a ser vice for eight and includes a gravy boat and two platters. The dishes are decorated with a single pink rose in the center, scalloped edges and gold trim. They are all in excellent condition.

I am wondering what this set is worth and how I should go about selling it, if I should chose to.

A: Castleton China, Inc. has been located in New Castle, Pa., since 1901. It was taken over in 1951 by Shenango Pottery. Castleton China produced fine china and made dinnerware for the White House during the Eisenhower and Johnson administrations. Shenango Pottery was sold to Anchor Hocking in 1979. “Dolly Madison” is the name of the pattern and was in production from 1952 to 1972.

If you decide to sell your set, your options are placing it on eBay or placing an ad in a local paper. If you sell to an antiques dealer, you can expect to receive around half of its value. Your set would probably sell for $200 to $400. If you plan to keep it, insure it for the replacement value of $600 to $900.

Lag putting is an essential part of the game that can either add or subtract strokes from your score each round. Controlling the speed on long putts can be more important than how accurate your read or aim of the putt had been. Hitting the first putt inside a makeable range should be the goal for most golfers when the putt is outside thirty feet.

One of the common mistakes seen in the long putting game is a belief that that backstroke is short or the same length for all putts. This restricted backstroke leads to an attempt to overly “accelerate” the putterhead through impact to create proper speed. This can be a very inconsistent and difficult way to control long putts.

By creating a more pendulum like swinging of the putter, speed is created easier through momentum and keeping a brisk tempo to each putt.
