Clearing Up the Confusion Around Date Labels on Packaged Foods Everyday

No doubt, you’ve noticed that some food CHEAPSKATE products come with dates and codes printed on ®

by Mary Hunt them. And who isn’t noticing this more now as food costs are skyrocketing?

Do those codes and dates mean the item must be consumed by that date or just sold by that date?

What about canned or packaged goods that show only a date like “2.01.21”? Does that mean you could end up in the emergency room if you consume it a month later in March?

And then there are other food products that don’t seem to have any date at all -- at least we sure can’t find any reference to one. Confusing, isn’t it?

While most food processors date and code their products and decide what their codes mean, it is the Food and Drug Administration that mandates dating, which is surprisingly limited.

Under federal law, only infant formula and baby food are required to have product dating.

Everything else is voluntary on the part of food manufacturers and processors.

Meat, poultry and egg products fall under the Food Safety and Inspection Service, and dates may be voluntarily created as long as they are truthful and not misleading.

Phrases like “Best Before,” “Better if Used Before” or “Best if Used By” tell you how long the product will retain its best flavor and highest quality. You will find these phrases on products such as baked goods, cereals, snacks and some canned foods. The food is still safe to eat after this date but may have changed somewhat in taste or texture.

Perplexed? Unsure? Open it! Give it the smell test and a good visual test. I can attest to the fact that a can of nonfat evaporated milk that is three years past its “Best By” date will not smell sour. But it may be golden in color (think school bus) and curiously separated, leaving liquid on top and chunky solids beneath. Get the picture? “Expiration,” “Use By” or “Use Before” are phrases that appear on yogurt, eggs and other foods that require refrigeration. Other dat-

ing terms are guidelines, but these usually mean what they say. If you haven’t used the product by this date, toss it out.

“Guaranteed fresh.” This date is often used for perishable baked goods. Beyond this date, freshness is no longer guaranteed, although the product may still be edible and easily refreshed with a few minutes in a hot oven.

Some products bear a “pack date,” indicating when it was packaged, although this date is often encrypted so that only manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers can read it.

The “Sell By” date is usually found on highly perishable foods such as meat, milk and bread. This date guides store clerks who handle the rotation of shelf stock so they know which item to sell first. This date is determined to allow time for the product to be stored and used at home. The product is still safe and wholesome past this date if handled properly until spoilage is evident -- when it looks more like a science fair project than tonight’s dinner.

For example, milk will usually be good for at least a week beyond its “Sell By” date if properly refrigerated. Meat that has reached its “Sell By” date should be either consumed or frozen within 24 hours.

The pack date on some products, such as eggs, is shown by a 3-digit Julian date (001 through 365) found on the short side of the carton. Jan. 1 is number 001, and Dec. 31 is number 365, ignoring leap year.

Eggs are safe to be consumed four to five weeks beyond that date, as long as they are kept refrigerated.

The point in all of this is that the fresher your food, the better it is. And for the most part, processors want to assure customers that their products will remain at peak quality for certain periods of time because they want to keep your business -- and having a good reputation for freshness goes a long way toward making that happen.

Here’s the bottom line: Use your common sense. Practice diligence when purchasing, storing and using up food. And never stop looking for reasonable ways to make food last longer and stretch further.

Chocolate-Hazelnut Pinwheels

These rich, crisp cookies are filled with a creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread (available at most supermarkets) and folded into a pretty pinwheel shape.

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

5. Repeat with remaining dough. Store cookies in tightly covered container up to 2 weeks. Makes 24 cookies.

1/2 cup sugar 6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened 1 large egg

1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup prepared chocolate-hazelnut spread

1. On a sheet of waxed paper, stir flour, baking powder and salt. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat sugar with butter until creamy. At low speed, beat in egg and vanilla until mixed. Gradually beat in flour mixture just until combined.

2. Divide dough in half; shape each half into a disk. Wrap each disk with plastic wrap and refrigerate about 1 hour or until firm enough to roll. (Or place dough in freezer 30 minutes.)

3. Preheat oven to 3750 F. On floured surface with floured rolling pin, roll 1 disk of dough into 10-inch by 7 1/2-inch rectangle. With pastry wheel or knife, cut rectangle lengthwise into 4 strips, then cut each strip crosswise into 3 squares. Place squares, 1 inch apart, on large ungreased cookie sheet. The holiday season is upon us, which means men, women, moms and dads are in the market for cuddly companions. Thankfully, when looking for a new dog or cat, many of them will turn to America’s animal shelters.

The Humane Society estimates that about six million to eight million animals enter those shelters each year. About half are adopted. The stakes are high for these animals. But they’re also high for the people who have to choose just one. How do you do it?

I talked to three people last week who had adopted dogs from a shelter. One said their dog has bitten eight people in as many months. The other said they’ve only had the dog one day and he has already growled at one of their children. And the third wrote me the following letter:

“I am fostering this dog deemed unadoptable.

‘Alvin,’ an adorable Cairn terrier-Schnauzer mix, had been at the shelter for six months. He was deemed unadoptable after an attempt to introduce him to my dog.

“The shelter asked me to foster Alvin or he would be destroyed. We have come a long way, but we still have a biting history and ongoing issues. The shelter wants a decision from me on whether I will keep him or return him to be put down.

“I am desperate to find a sanctuary or a professional to help him or help me help him. He has bitten everyone in the family so far. But it is bizarre how loving and sweet he is 99.9 percent of the time. I want to give him every possible chance before giving up on him. He was obviously abused and abandoned. He has fear-based aggression and dog aggression, and he is unbalanced. Our family has been working with him extensively, but we're making no headway. If you could contact me and help in some way, we would be forever grateful.”

The problem, as I see it, is all too common: People buy the outside of the dog without knowing the inside.

This person wants desperately to save a dog’s life, even at the risk of her own family. In the

Seniors Who Are Disabled

Baby boomers (like me) aren’t just getting old. Some of us are also getting frail. I’m probably a pretty good example. After a lifetime of essentially good health, I’ve recently had to deal with issues as severe as blood clots and as minor as a bum knee and arthritis.

And judging from my emails, I’m not alone.

Many older folks are asking me about getting disability benefits from Social Security. I’ll offer some tips on how to go about doing that in a minute. But first, here are some ground rules.

If you are over your full retirement age, forget about it. Once you reach that age, disability benefits are no longer payable. Or to put that another way, the retirement benefit you are getting pays the same rate as any disability benefits you might be due.

If you are under age 62 and disabled, then you should definitely file for Social Security disability. If you are over 62 and not yet on Social Security, then you should file for retirement and disability benefits at the same time. The Social Security Administration can start your retirement payments right away. Then if your disability claim is eventually approved, they will switch you to the higher disability rate.

But if you are between age 62 and your full retirement age, and are already getting Social Security retirement benefits, you may or may not be eligible for disability payments. Or to be more precise, the closer you are to your full retirement age, the smaller your disability boost will be -- and you may decide it’s just not worth all the hassle.

That’s because your disability rate (normally equal to your full retirement age benefit) must be reduced for every month you’ve already received a Social Security retirement check. And you will eventually reach a point where you simply gain very little by filing for Social Security disability.

Here is a quick example of that. Sam filed for retirement benefits at age 62. His benefit was reduced roughly one-half of 1% for each month he was under his full retirement age. He is getting 75% of his FRA rate. At 65, he had a heart attack.

If he files for disability benefits and if his claim is approved, his regular disability rate, again equal to his FRA benefit, must be reduced by about onehalf of one percent for each month he’s already received a retirement benefit. At age 65, he’s received 36 retirement checks, so his disability rate must be cut by about 18%. So instead of a 100% disability rate, he’d get about 82%. Sam would have to decide if it is worth all the hassle of filing for disability just to get bumped up from his current 75% rate to 82%.

I’ve used the phrase “all the hassle” twice already. Let me tell you what the hassle is by giving you a quick rundown of the Social Security disability application process.

First, you will fill out a bunch of papers.

The primary one is a form that asks you to describe your disability and how it prevents you from working. That latter point is the key. You don’t get disability benefits simply because you have some kind of physical or mental impairment. You get

ANSWER: Tamsulosin is in the class of alpha blockers, and they relax smooth muscle, a special type of muscle found in the prostate and in blood vessels (among other places). Relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate makes the urethra, the tube that carries the urine from the bladder and through the prostate, larger. As a result, men can empty their bladders more easily.

However, even though tamsulosin is better at relaxing smooth muscle in the prostate than in blood vessels, some men will get lightheaded upon standing when using it. This occurs especially on the first dose, and over time most men no longer have trouble. It is usually dosed at nighttime so that the lightheadedness on standing is minimized. You can take it at any time of the day (a half-hour after eating is recommended, at the same meal of the day), but I doubt it will work much better.

is a photo of a cookie jar that was given away with a purchase of coffee in the early 1950s. I don’t remember the coffee company, but they came door-to-door selling coffee and other kitchen staples. Marked on the bottom are the words “Patent Smiley 60 -- Shawnee USA.” He stands about 11 inches tall, is wearing light tan pants, a green scarf and is in perfect condition.

Can you tell me anything about my cookie jar and what it is worth?

They were located in Zanesville, Ohio, from 1937 to 1961. Smiley was the creation of designer, Rudy Ganz, around 1942.

There were a variety of matching pieces that included banks, salt-and-pepper shakers, pitchers and his female companion, “Winnie.”

They were decorated with Smiley cookie jars were made by Shawnee Pottery. several different outfits and designs. According to Shawnee Pottery, your Smiley is wearing butterscotch brown pants. Shawnee Pottery was sold by Sears, Woolworth, Kresge and used by several companies as premiums.
