YOUTH WITH PROMISE

Financial Assistance Programs

Valley Christian Schools’ financial assistance programs play a vital role in ensuring economic diversity in the student body by allowing qualified candidates from all economic circumstances to enroll and attend our school. In the 2016-2017 fiscal year, VCS awarded nearly $3,500,000 in financial assistance, primarily though our Youth with Promise program. One of the first recipients of Youth with Promise was Leah Calderon, a 2016 graduate who is currently attending UC Merced. To hear Leah’s inspiring story of how her life was changed by VCS and the Youth with Promise program, scan the photo to the right using Layar (instructions on the inside cover).

A beautiful day at Silver Creek Country Club was the setting for one of our longest standing fundraising events, the 23rd Annual Golf Classic. Once again, we welcomed many loyal members of the VCS community, hosting faculty, staff, and even alumni from as far back as the early 90s. The competition reached new heights as Valley Christian’s own Dean of Students and head football coach Mike Machado led his team to victory in a close round of golf. As always, the success of this event was a combination of parent volunteers giving their time and energy to partner with the Extend the Gift Development team, and our generous VCS community for supporting the school through this event. No event lasts for over 20 years without a tremendous amount of dedication and support, and we look forward to seeing everyone out on the green next year as we continue the tradition.

Quest Ball

The Quest Ball Dinner and Auction has quickly become the one of the most enjoyable and rewarding nights of the year for the VCS community, and this year was no exception. At the 3rd Annual Quest Ball, patrons enjoyed a great night of fellowship and bid on auction items such as a week’s stay in Mexico, VIP experience at a Giants’ game, and even a puppy. The generosity of the community was felt throughout the evening, including another incredible showing during “Stand Up for Valley’s Kids.”

As always, the success of this event is due in large part to the incredible volunteers who give hundreds of hours planning and organizing. We cannot thank our chairwomen Jen LaBarbera and Cheryl Brashears enough for all of their support to make this a memorable night.

- The junior high robotics team “WarriorBots” was awarded first place in programming at the 2017 FIRST LEGO League Robotics Competition Silicon Valley Regional Championship, and was invited to West Virginia over the summer to compete against schools from around the country. The team earned two awards: First Place Robot Mechanical Design and First Place Alliance Competition.

- VCHS’ math team placed fourth in the California state championships, with six students advancing to nationals. And, our elementary SOAR math class competed in the Continental Math League Computer Science Challenge, placing first in the Western Region for the third year in a row.

- VCS’ “Ocean Discovery” team, comprised of junior high and high school students, have made their way to the semi-final round of the $7 Million Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE challenge, an international competition entered by some of the world’s top corporations and think tanks. You can read more about “Ocean Discovery” in the latest edition of the Valley Vision magazine by scanning the photo above.
