Dear GUEST NAME,
You are invited to a dinner party at Boddy Manor. Please arrive at 7:30 sharp on Saturday evening. It will be to your advantage to be present on this date, because a Mr. Boddy will bring to an end a certain longstanding, confidential, and painful financial liability.
Sincerely Yours, A Friend

DRAMATURG’S NOTE SETTING
A dark and stormy night in 1954, at Boddy Manor –a grand estate on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., shrouded in shadows and dripping with sinister secrets.
As a dramaturg, the first question I ask when working on a production is “why this play, now?” By asking and eventually answering this question, I am able to help provide the director, designers, and actors with history, context, and details to help ground the performance in the present day with our specific audience in mind, despite the historical setting.
1954 was a year of extreme paranoia. In the midst of the Cold War, tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR) were on the rise. There was an undercurrent of fear that the USSR would initiate a nuclear attack and the only real prevention was constant vigilance and rooting out potential spies and dissenters, which led to a widespread fear of communism. Senator Joseph McCarthy is credited with spearheading the “hunt” for Communists (often called “reds,” a derogatory nickname derived from the color of the Communist flag). Hundreds of American citizens were accused of disloyalty, though few were convicted; these false accusations ruined the lives of artists, activists, politicians, teachers, and scholars across the nation. Citizens were encouraged to report suspicious activity (e.g. attending a “communist” meeting, liking abstract art, voting against nuclear weapons, having racially diverse associations, etc.). Everyone was a potential suspect and everyone was a potential informer–no one could be trusted.
Enter Boddy Manor: here we are presented with a group of six individuals, going by pseudonyms, who all have something to hide. Though on the surface, our play is a farce, the slapstick comedy and physical shtick masks a palpable atmosphere of fear. Each character is keen to accuse one another, whilst hiding their own misdeeds and foibles. The light shines on what we are meant to see, but we know something deeper, and perhaps more treacherous, lurks in the shadows. Though we are 70 years beyond the setting, it is easy to identify a similar paranoia and fear of the unknown within our contemporary world, especially in a major election season. What does the future hold for our nation? Who can be trusted? Who should be avoided? Ultimately, the play does not provide us answers to these key questions, for the absurdity of the story dominates, and by curtain call, what was once in darkness has been brought to light.

Giving PLANNED
The Shechem Oak Society empowers our community to make an extraordinary impact on future generations. The society comprises all who generously bequeath legacy gifts to Valley Christian Schools.
God assured Abraham of keeping His promise to grant the land to Abraham’s descendants. Shechem holds a significant place in this narrative—it’s where Jacob excavated a well and erected an altar, where Joseph’s family laid his remains to rest, where Joshua delivered his parting words in service to the Lord, and where Jesus revealed Himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman at the well (Genesis 12:6, 33:18, Joshua 24:26, John 4:12). Shechem stands as a powerful symbol of God’s faithfulness across generations. We fervently pray that VCS, like Shechem, will serve as a reminder of God’s unwavering faithfulness in Silicon Valley and worldwide.
At a time when many American educational institutions are straying from biblical values, you can ensure that Valley Christian Schools continues its Quest for Excellence™ for future generations. Join us in providing high-quality Christ-centered education to our children and grandchildren by including VCS in your will.
VCS partners with Thompson & Associates to offer confidential and complimentary estate planning consultations to our board members, administrators, faculty, staff, and community. Join my wife, Kris, myself, and others in discovering the most tax-efficient means of transferring your estate to benefit your family and your passions.
As a trusted member of our VCS community, please accept our gift to you and arrange your estate planning consultation with Darren Penny of Thompson & Associates. You may email advancement@vcs.net or call my office at 408-513-2503. If you have already included VCS in your planned giving, kindly inform us so we may include you in our Shechem Oak Society.
Looking forward,
Clifford E. Daugherty, Ed.D. President
