Season’s Greetings and

MerryChristmas Season’s Greetings and Merry Christmas from the students, faculty, and staff of Valley Christian Schools’ Conservatory of the Arts! Our performers are thrilled to share creative renditions of Christmas’s timeless story through song, word, and dance. We invite you to join us in celebrating this season of family, joy, and hope. To say that we are excited to be on stage, live and in-person, does not start to describe just how joyous we are to come together as a community. The challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic have left their mark on all of us. We all have experienced loss; loss of our daily flow, loss of communion with family and friends, and in all too many instances, loss of a loved one, or two, or three. And while coming together as a community to celebrate the traditions of Christmas won’t erase the loss of these past 22 months, it does lay testament to the resilience of humankind as we look forward with an expectation of better days ahead. “…And then, just when everything is bearing down on us to such an extent that we can scarcely withstand it, the Christmas message comes to tell us that all our ideas are wrong, and that what we take to be evil and dark is really good and light because it comes from God. Our eyes are at fault, that is all. God is in the manger, wealth in poverty, light in darkness, succor in abandonment. No evil can befall us; whatever men may do to us, they cannot but serve the God who is secretly revealed as love and rules the world and our lives.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer And that, in a nutshell, is why we know our hope for better days ahead is not in vain. Through the gift of Jesus, the original and ultimate Christmas gift, we can experience rebirth, a “realignment” of sorts for our fractured lives. Our prayer is that throughout this performance, the restorative powers of God, through His son Jesus Christ, help bring hope and healing into our lives, our families, and our communities. Troy Gunter Director, Conservatory of the Arts Vice-President, Valley Christian Schools

My

Grandmother My Grandmother Sutherland began making unique handmade Christmas tree ornaments for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as an annual gift in 1980. Our family received the two featured on this page. Grandma’s great-great-grandchildren weren’t born until after she passed at age 100 in 2009. They only know their great-great Grandma Sutherland through photos, her message to future generations in our big leather-bound family Bible, and of course, her handmade Christmas ornaments they help place on our Christmas tree each year. It was just like yesterday when Kris and I received our annual Christmas ornament from Grandma Sutherland. For our grandchildren, who were not yet born or were too young to remember, it could seem like forever ago that Grandma handmade and gifted her annual Christmas tree ornaments. But they know Grandma Sutherland through her encouraging words of faith and her loving gifts, which stand the test of time. Grandma’s Christmas gifts now reach four generations of her posterity. All of this reminds me of our Heavenly Father’s gift of His Son, Jesus. God promised through the prophet Isaiah to send His Son as a child more than 2700 years ago, saying, “For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; And the government will [a]rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NASB More than 700 years after Isaiah’s prophesy, Jesus announced Himself as the Son of God in fulfillment of the ancient prophecies and God’s promise when He said to Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16 When we decorate our Christmas tree, we fondly remember Grandma Sutherland through her Christmas ornaments handmade with love and handed down through four generations. God’s gift of His Son Jesus spans hundreds of generations and offers the greatest gift of all, eternal life to all who believe in Jesus as God’s Son. Clifford E. Daugherty, Ed.D. President, Valley Christian Schools

My Favorite Holiday Christmas is my favorite holiday for many reasons, but this year is going to be extra special! My firstborn child, Cameron Kay, is finishing her first semester in college and coming home on December 16. I am grateful and filled with joy because our family will be reunited. Returning home means a chance for Cameron to take a much-needed break, sleep in her bed, and hang out with family and close friends who are also home for the holidays. I have been thinking of this moment since I moved her into her dorm in August—the joyful reunion of my daughter returning home will be the best Christmas gift. During this season of Christmas, I pray our Valley Christian community be filled with joy and gratitude. I am genuinely grateful for our students, faculty, staff, parents, and administrators’ resilience and determination over the past two years. In time, we will look at this challenging period in the rearview mirror. When we do, it will be with immense pride in how we collectively responded as a community. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May our Lord continue to bless you and your family abundantly. “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11 Jerry Merza Superintendent, Valley Christian Schools

Our Christmas Prayer ~ A Family Tradition Our Father, thank You for sending Your only begotten Son to earth as a baby so many years ago. Thank You that Jesus paid the punishment for my sins by dying on the cross. And, thank You that He has the power of God to defeat death through His resurrection for everyone who accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior. Let the lights of the Christmas season remind me of Christ as the Light of the world. May Your Word penetrate my heart as I receive Your gift of eternal life by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. We rejoice with the heavenly angelic hosts as our children and every member of our family receive Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior, for now and for eternity. We are so grateful, Lord Jesus, that whoever believes in You will not perish but have everlasting life. This Christmas, we celebrate that You came to the earth You created to save me, my family, and the entire world. In the mighty name of the King of kings and Lord of lords, Amen.
