Valley Christian Conservatory of the Arts presents A Spring Vocal Concert: The Music of the Spheres March 31, 2022, 7 PM, Mission Santa Clara David Hook, Director; Ivan Utomo, Accompanist

A note from the director… “The music of the spheres”- it’s much more than a mere metaphorical term. Great thinkers, theorists, philosophers and creatives throughout history- from Plato, Pythagoras and Shakespeare, to the 17th-century astronomer Johannes Kepler and the Australian academic Douglas Kahn have embraced the thought that there is a mathematical scheme at work within and amongst the orbit of the heavenly spheres; a harmonious interplay between the celestial bodies that could be considered an intermingling of spirituality, physics, mathematics and art. Renaissance writers believed an ideal harmony of order existed in the cosmos-literally, three descending “diapasons,” or harmonic scales. This was seen as a way of ordering the heavens and the earth, and these “mystic threes” began with God (https://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/ Library/SLT/ideas/order/scale.html#metaphor). The Bible offers us the image of the triune God singing over His people (Zephaniah 3:17). Jesus Christ spoke creation into existence and continues to uphold it by His spoken word (John 1:3; Hebrews 1:2 and 10; Colossians 1:15-17). The psalmist wrote, “the heavens declare the glory of God (Psalm 19:1),” and the theologian John Calvin once said that creation is the theater of God’s glory. From time to time, we have talked in class about the Creation story and what significance it holds for us as creative beings, for we have indeed been created in His image. How do we reflect His glory and participate in the joyous “musical dance” of creation? Tonight is about exploring, celebrating, displaying the beauty of creation and declaring God’s goodness and glory through the music we sing. I believe our harmonies join with mystic music of the spheres, the music that both permeates and transcends time and space, declaring the glory of God; whether we are singing a sea shanty, a pop song or renaissance madrigal. This is a wonderful time to be a singer, and I feel so privileged to introduce your young singer to these concepts and thoughts about music and art.. We can sing over and above the darkness and desperation around us; we can declare and share in the Almighty Father’s love and sovereign grace as His creation. He is still redeeming, recreating and holding creation together, above and beyond all the evil we see and encounter today. 2

Near the end of our concert, you will hear the performance of a timeless hymn that best describes what we are trying to convey to you this evening through our music. Take some time to reflect upon these lyrics before the evening begins: “This is My Father’s World” This is my Father’s world, And to my listening ears All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas-His hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father’s world: The birds their carols raise, The morning light, the lily white, Declare their Maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world: He shines in all that’s fair; In the rustling grass I hear Him pass, He speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father’s world: O let me ne’er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet. This is my Father’s world: The battle is not done; Jesus Who died shall be satisfied And earth and heav’n be one.
