WELCOME to Valley Christian Elementary School’s 2022 Art Show! This year I led the entire school on an excursion through other countries like Africa, Canada, many Hispanic countries and more. On our expeditions they learned about each country, some artists from some of those countries, and about the ELEMENTS OF ART: LINE, SHAPE, FORM, COLOR, VALUE, SPACE AND TEXTURE. Here are the specifics for each grade:

3

Kindergarten African Zebras - the students learned a little bit about Zebras and learned SHAPES to make a Zebra, horizontal and vertical LINES for detail, and TEXTURE with a yarn mane and tail. They also learned about SPACE because the zebras were glued onto an African landscape. Mexican Blankets - the students learned a little bit about Mexico and how to make a paper version of a Mexican textile by drawing different kinds of LINES and learning about TEXTURE by cutting fringe that feels fluffy on the ends of the blanket. Watercolor Leaves - as a fall project the students learned a little about different kinds of leaves (LINES AND SHAPES) and were able to experience painting with a watercolor wash technique around crayon leaves which resisted the water and then saw the effects of sprinkling salt (TEXTURE) on their painting as it grabs the paint in a final step. We also discussed and used WARM and COOL COLORS. Sponge Stamped Poinsettias - The students watched “The legend of the Poinsettia” and then sponge painted poinsettias with red, pink and green as a Christmas project. The art elements used were SHAPE, TEXTURE and COLOR. Watercolor Wash Snowmen - as a winter project the students made a snowy background with watercolor wash and snow with salt. They also lightly pressed a coffee filter snowman into the “snow” and then cut and glued on details. They learned about SHAPES and TEXTURE. Canadian Polar Bear - The students learned a little about the ARCTIC in a region that covers Northern CANADA. It is usually cold and snowy and ice-covered. TED HARRISON (1925-2015) was a Canadian artist whose landscape paintings were inspired by his surroundings in Canada. I lead the students through drawing a simple polar bear using LINES and SHAPES. I had them add lines for TEXTURE to give them FORM. They also painted a Ted Harrison inspired background which taught them about SPACE and COLOR and ORGANIC SHAPES. Valentine Duck - We watched “Click, Clack, Moo, I Love You” Then they made hearts strung together between the duck’s arms, from the book. 4

Kindergarten Indian Camel - In the first class we watched a Youtube video about decorated camels in INDIA. The students then cut out the SHAPE of a camel and drew PATTERNS on it with construction paper crayons. The second class, we read Humphry’s First Christmas. Even though it was not Christmas time, this is a beautiful story about a camel who met Jesus. The students then used feathers, sequence and tissue paper to finish decorating their camel. This taught them about TEXTURE. Easter Chicks - I took advantage of the fact that our Science Teacher, Mr. Depold and our Librarian, Mrs. Steeves were hatching chickens and asked to borrow them for an Art Lesson. We read “The Legend of the Easter Egg” and discussed that though eggs don’t have anything to do with Jesus, they could be used to remember how he was raised from the dead in the tomb, similarly to how chicks are alive when they come out of their shells. The students were shown the live chickens in a box and cut out triangles (SHAPES) to make a head for a chicken with googly eyes and that ended in grass.

First Grade African Giraffes - Students learned about SPACE to make a background landscape and learned about LINE and SHAPE to make a giraffe. They learned about collages by pasting them together. Surrealist Buildings - Students constructed their own Surrealistinspired building in this lesson based on Argentinian artist Xul Solar. A mixed-up background featuring both night and day adds a sense of SPACE while the whimsical, shape-focused building stands in the foreground. After using shapes to build their building, students added fun, finishing touches to include SHAPE people, ladders and colorful flags. Watercolor Leaves - To celebrate fall and learn a little about different kinds of leaves, the students did a watercolor wash over crayon drawn leaves (SHAPES). This taught that the water resists the wax in the crayons. They then sprinkled salt over the work and watched as the salt crystals also resisted the paint giving a whimsical effect. 5

First Grade Gratitude Feathers - Instead of Thanksgiving turkey feathers we discussed what we were thankful for while drawing different kinds of LINES and PATTERNS on paper feathers and learned about WARM and COOL COLORS. Glitter Christmas Tree - For Christmas we discussed the true meaning and drew a Christmas Tree using LINES and SHAPES. They colored the trees with COOL COLORS and the background with WARM COLORS or the other way around. They topped it with a glittery star. Watercolor Wash Salt Snowman - To celebrate winter the student’s did a watercolor wash with salt (TEXTURE) to make snowflakes. They cut out SHAPES that make coffee filter snowmen with different COLORS of faces, hats, arms and scarves. Canadian Frozen Lake Portrait - The students learned about Canadian ice fishing in Ice Shanties. I lead them through drawing a portrait which could be themselves or not. They learned about VERTICAL and HORIZONTAL LINES. They also learned about SPACE, SHAPES, and WARM and COOL COLORS. They mixed colors for skin colors and created shadows and learned about VALUE. Valentine Mosaic Hearts - The students cut construction paper and painted paper and created mosaics on top of hearts for this Valentine’s project. Some decorated outside the heart with markers. They used LINE, SHAPE and TEXTURE. We then made a simple drawing of chicks and eggs showing SPACE, further or closer to the Horizon Line and larger objects closer and smaller objects further away. Then they painted them. 6

Second Grade African Rhinos - In this lesson, students used LINES to create a simple rhino drawing. Students learned about repetition of triangular shapes made from cutting, pasting and drawing to create a background that featured a vibrant, geometric design. (SHAPES and PATTERNS) They learned about harmony and balance so that they could arrange the triangles in the background in a pleasing composition, making both sides equally weighted. Mexican Mariposas (Butterflies) - This lesson was inspired by the colorful artwork of Contemporary Mexican artist Lourdes Villagomez. Villagomez paints animals, objects and scenes that are infused with the lively color and culture of Mexico. Students created a mariposa (or butterfly) using an oil pastel transfer technique that helped to create symmetrical balance. Inside each symmetrical wing, students used tempera pucks to COLOR their own custom colored wings and then topped them off with contrasting patterns with Posca pens. They also made a blue watercolor and salt wash to make a sky in which to attach their butterfly. The elements of art that they used were LINE, SHAPE, COLOR and SPACE. Glitter Christmas Tree - For Christmas we discussed the true meaning and drew a Christmas Tree using LINES and SHAPES. They colored the trees with COOL COLORS and the background with WARM COLORS or the other way around. They topped it with a glittery star. Black History Month Peanut Plant - We watched a video about George Washington Carver and made a peanut plant with WARM COLORS above the horizon line and COOL COLORS for the peanuts and roots underground. They also learned about LINES, SHAPES and SPACE. 7

Second Grade Canadian North Atlantic Fishing Boat - The students made bright boats based on the fishing trawlers that frequent the North Atlantic waters along the coast of Canada. They learned about creating a sense of SPACE by using watercolor resist to add interest to their painting and learned to create different VALUES OF COLORS to create shadows on their fishing boat and on the water. They learned about VERTICAL and HORIZONTAL LINES and SHAPES. We also used white pastels to create waves and foam in the water. Brazilian Romeo Britto Valentines - We watched “Inside Romero Britto’s Pop Art Empire ‘’ and “He’s the Most Licensed Artist in History ‘’ about this Brazilian artist. His work is vibrant and fun and everywhere! The students followed me by drawing a Romeo Britto inspired landscape (LINES AND SHAPES) and then using many of the COLORS he uses. They finished it off with their chosen stripes and designs in each space of the drawing. They then made “dot” chicks by dipping Q-tips in paint. Chinese Tigers - I led the students in how to make the face of a tiger (LINE and SHAPE) with black oil pastels. We then talked about what things we would like to try to do this year. I encouraged them to think about what God would want and to think about others. They wrote these things down in crayon (wax resist ) on a separate piece of paper. They then painted over them in watercolor and then glued their tiger on.

Third Grade African Senufo Pattern Practice - These works show beautiful African designs used to practice for the next project. Elements used were LINE AND SHAPE. African Senufo Mud Cloth - The students watched a video of how Senufo Mud Clothes are made. Mud Clothes are made by the SENUFO People of the Ivory Coast in AFRICA. They are painted by men on pieces of loosely woven cotton fabric. Mud clothes include patterns of stylized animals, nature, masked figures and geometric designs that have cultural significance. Our Mud Clothes were done on paper using LINES and PATTERNS to make a border and by choosing a stylized African animal to add to the middle. Then they painted them with yellow watercolor to make them look like mud. Hispanic Patterned Tree - This brightly patterned tree is inspired by Carlos Catasse, a Chilean-born painter. Students focused on cutting and layering both geometric and organic paper SHAPES on a colored background to represent a large canopy of leaves. Then they used LINES and SHAPES to create patterns using bright paint pens and construction paper crayons. To finish off, they cut out a tree with a colorful outline to add on top. Sponge Stamped Poinsettias - The students watched “The legend of the Poinsettia” and then sponge painted poinsettias with red, pink and green as a Christmas project. They then painted a blue background to really make their poinsettias pop! The art elements used were SHAPE, TEXTURE and COLOR. Christmas Postcard Art Contest entries - Every year there is a contest between the 3rd through 5th graders to make an original piece of Art that best reflects the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The chosen piece (or pieces) are used for the VCS postcards that go out to thousands of families in our area. The winners are displayed in frames in the Elementary School front office, but I keep all of the wonderful art so that everyone can see them in the Art Show.

Third Grade MLK hands and tennis balls - For Martin Luther King Day we read “Game Changers: the story of Venus and Serena Williams”. They then traced one or both of their hands (LINES and SHAPES) and drew overlapping circles over the hands. Each time a line was crossed a COLOR was changed. The hands were done in WARM COLORS and the background or tennis balls were done in COOL COLORS. Funky Cat Valentines - Just for fun, we read “Ruby Valentine, and the Sweet Surprise”. Then they made a whimsical cat with SHAPES and LINES and then painted them. Canadian Niagara Falls - The students learned about Niagara Falls on both the American and the Canadian sides. While drawing the falls, students learned about the HORIZON LINE and about several kinds of LINES including how to add movement. They added salt to their watercolor to add TEXTURE. At the end they learned Dry Brush by adding white tempera paint on top of the painting for foam at the bottom of the falls and spray as it came down the falls. Easter Chicks -I took advantage of the fact that our Science Teacher, Mr. I then led them through drawing a realistic grouping of three chicks. Gratitude Feathers - Instead of Thanksgiving turkey feathers we discussed what we were thankful for while drawing different kinds of LINES and PATTERNS on paper feathers and learned about WARM and COOL COLORS. The hands were done in WARM COLORS and the background or tennis balls were done in COOL COLORS. Watercolor Koi Fish - Students used different types of LINE and SHAPES to draw a realistic koi fish on watercolor paper. After tracing over their drawing with black permanent marker, students used liquid watercolors to explore different watercolor techniques such as wet on dry and wet on wet to give their koi fish unmistakable vibrant color. They even practiced creating VALUE. As a final touch, students can sprinkled salt in the koi’s watery surrounding to add a little bit of TEXTURE.

Fourth Grade African Chameleons - With my guidance the students drew both a chameleon and a branch to give it a place to perch using LINE and SHAPE. Chameleons in Africa are known for their bright colors and the students were encouraged to make theirs with bright COLORS. They then did a watercolor wash in the background and sprinkled a little salt on their paper for increased interest and TEXTURE. Hispanic Geometric Animals - Students connected dots as they created geometric animals in this lesson inspired by the brightly colored animals of contemporary Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel. Students focused on LINE, SHAPE and COLORS as they drew the head of an animal, filled it with polygons and then added paint in different color schemes. For a finishing touch, they cut features like eyes from black and white construction paper and added contrasting patterns to the paper with Posca pens before gluing them on. Gratitude Feathers - Instead of Thanksgiving turkey feathers we discussed what we were thankful for while drawing different kinds of LINES and PATTERNS on paper feathers and learned about WARM and COOL COLORS. 11

Fourth Grade Chinese Dragon - We discussed what a Chinese Dragon symbolizes and then drew a simple dragon using different types of LINES and SHAPES on watercolor paper. After tracing over their drawing with black permanent marker, students used liquid watercolors to explore different watercolor techniques such as wet on dry and wet on wet. They even practiced creating VALUE. I let them choose their own colors but paying attention to CONTRAST. Snowflake Raised Salt Painting - To celebrate winter the students traced a snowflake (LINE and SHAPE), covered it with glue and then with salt (TEXTURE) and then lightly touched it with liquid watercolor paint. (COLOR) The paint grabs the salt and makes an interesting effect. Christmas Postcard Art Contest entries - Every year there is a contest between the 3rd through 5th graders to make an original piece of Art that best reflects the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The winners are displayed in frames in the Elementary School front office, but I keep all of the wonderful art so that everyone can see them in the Art Show. MLK Hands - To celebrate the Martin Luther King Day, I have them draw their hands in four different directions and then color them in four different skin colors, making designs in the places where they overlapped. This represents the patchwork that we all create together. They learned about LINE, SHAPE and COLOR. Tulip Valentines - This fun and quick project allowed me to lead the students through a realist drawing of tulips in a pot. They used watercolor to paint it using two colors for each tulip and white oil pastel to create shine on the pot. Other than that, they chose their own colors. This lesson taught them about LINE, SHAPE, FORM and COLOR.

Fifth Grade African Flamingo Painting - Student’s learned a little about Flamingos. LESSER FLAMINGOS are a species of flamingo that primarily live in AFRICA in areas like KENYA in flocks of up to one million birds. The students used oil pastels and tempera paint with LINES and SHAPES in order to make their own realistic Flamingos. They also learned about SPACE in creating a background and especially when learning how to make ripples in the water around the flamingo’s legs. Abstract Shape Painting - This technique was based on the HISPANIC Venezuelan artist Jaime Gili’s work. The students used masking tape to make GEOMETRIC SHAPES and then COLOR them in with paint and LINES.
