FALL CHOIR CONCERT Junior High and High School Choirs Program Green Finch and Linnet Bird (from Sweeney Todd) Stephen Sondheim (b. 1930) Stephanie Lee (solo)
Green finch and linnet bird, Nightingale, blackbird, How is it you sing?
Are you crowing? Are you screaming? Ringdove and robinet
How can you jubilate, Sitting in cages, Never taking wing?
Is it for wages, Singing to be sold? Have you decided it’s Safer in cages, Singing when you’re told?
Outside the sky waits, Beckoning, beckoning, Just beyond the bars.
My cage has many rooms, Damask and dark. Nothing there sings, Not even my lark.
How can you remain, Staring at the rain, Maddened by the stars? How is it you sing anything? How is it you sing?
Larks never will, you know, When they’re captive. Teach me to be more adaptive.
Green finch and linnet bird, Nightingale, blackbird, How is it you sing?
Green finch and linnet bird, Nightingale, blackbird, Teach me how to sing.
Whence comes this melody constantly flowing? Is it rejoicing or merely a loaming?
If I cannot fly, Let me sing.
Are you discussing or fussing Or simply dreaming?

The Fox
Traditional English Folk Song, arr. Blake Richter (b. 1993) and Taylor Shaeffer (b. 1990) Junior High Choir 1 and Junior Encore, featuring Art Students from Art III, AP Drawing, and AP 2D Design The fox went out on a chilly night, He prayed to the moon to give him light, For he’d many a mile to go that night Before he reached the town-o. He ran till he came to a great big bin Where the ducks and the geese were put therein. “A couple of you will grease my chin Before I leave this town-o.” He grabbed the grey goose by the neck, Threw the duck behind his back; He didn’t mind the, “Quack, quack, quack!” And their legs all a-dangling down-o.
The old gray woman jumped out of bed; Out of the window she cocked her head, crying, “John, John! The grey goose is gone!” And the fox is on the town-o. He ran till he came to his cozy den; There were the little ones eight, nine, ten. Saying, “Daddy, daddy better go back again, It must be a mighty fine town-o.” The fox and his wife without any strife They cut up the goose with a fork and a knife And they never had such a supper in their life And the little ones chewed on the bones-o.
Electricity (from Billy Elliot: The Musical) Elton John (b. 1947) and Lee Hall (b. 1966) Vedanth Ramachandran (solo) I can’t really explain it, I haven’t got the words It’s a feeling that you can’t control I suppose it’s like forgetting, losing who you are And at the same time something makes you whole
It’s a bit like being angry, it’s a bit like being scared Confused and all mixed up and mad as well It’s like when you’ve been crying And you’re empty and you’re full I don’t know what it is, it’s hard to tell
It’s like that there’s a music playing in your ear And I’m listening, and I’m listening and then I disappear
It’s like that there’s a music playing in your ear But the music is impossible, impossible to hear
And then I feel a change Like a fire deep inside Something bursting me wide open impossible to hide And suddenly I’m flying, flying like a bird Like electricity, electricity Sparks inside of me And I’m free I’m free
But then I feel it move me Like a burning deep inside Something bursting me wide open impossible to hide And suddenly I’m flying, flying like a bird Like electricity, electricity Sparks inside of me And I’m free I’m free Electricity, sparks inside of me And I’m free, I’m free. 4
I Dreamed A Dream (from Les Miserables)
Alain Boublil (b. 1941) and Claude-Michel Schonberg (b. 1944) Mikaela Olsen (solo) There was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting
But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart As they turn your dream to shame
There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting
He slept a summer by my side He filled my days with endless wonder He took my childhood in his stride But he was gone when autumn came
There was a time Then it all went wrong I dreamed a dream in times gone by When hope was high and life worth living I dreamed, that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used and wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung, no wine untasted
And still I dream he’ll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms we cannot weather I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I’m living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.
A Million Dreams (from The Greatest Showman)
Benj Pasek (b. 1985) and Justin Paul (b. 1985), arr. Mac Huff Junior High Choir 1 and Junior Encore, featuring soloists Genesis Bateman, Brooke Gaches, and Talia Santizo I close my eyes and I can see The world that’s waiting up for me That I call my own Through the dark, through the door Through where no one’s been before But it feels like home
There’s a house we can build Every room inside is filled With things from far away The special things I compile Each one there to make you smile On a rainy day
They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy They can say, they can say I’ve lost my mind I don’t care, I don’t care, so call me crazy We can live in a world that we design
They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy They can say, they can say we’ve lost our minds I don’t care, I don’t care if they call us crazy Runaway to a world that we design
‘Cause every night I lie in bed The brightest colors fill my head A million dreams are keeping me awake I think of what the world could be A vision of the one I see A million dreams is all it’s gonna take A million dreams for the world we’re gonna make
Every night I lie in bed The brightest colors fill my head A million dreams are keeping me awake I think of what the world could be A vision of the one I see A million dreams is all it’s gonna take A million dreams for the world we’re gonna make 5
However big, however small Let me be part of it all Share your dreams with me You may be right, you may be wrong But say that you’ll bring me along To the world you see
Every night I lie in bed The brightest colors fill my head A million dreams are keeping me awake A million dreams, a million dreams I think of what the world could be A vision of the one I see A million dreams is all it’s gonna take A million dreams for the world we’re gonna make
To the world I close my eyes to see I close my eyes to see
For the world we’re gonna make.
Proud of Your Boy (from Aladdin)
Alan Menken (b. 1949) and Howard Ashman (1950-1991) Oliver Kaelin (solo) Proud of your boy I’ll make you proud of your boy Believe me, bad as I’ve been, Ma You’re in for a pleasant surprise
Tell me that I’ve been a louse and loafer You won’t get a fight here, no ma’am Say I’m a goldbrick, a good-off, no good But that couldn’t be all that I am
I’ve wasted time I’ve wasted me So say I’m slow for my age A late bloomer, okay, I agree
Water flows under the bridge Let it pass, let it go There’s no good reason that you should believe me Not yet, I know, but
That I’ve been one rotten kid Some son, some pride and some joy But I’ll get over these lousin’ up Messin’ up, screwin’ up times You’ll see, Ma, now comes the better part Someone’s gonna make good Cross his stupid heart Make good and finally make you Proud of your boy
Someday and soon I’ll make you proud of your boy Though I can’t make myself taller Or smarter or handsome or white I’ll do my best, what else can I do? Since I wasn’t born perfect like Dad or you Mom, I will try to Try hard to make you Proud of your boy
Dear Theodosia (from Hamilton)
Lin-Manuel Miranda (b. 1980) Maya Bangalore and Anjali Khiani (duet) Dear Theodosia, what to say to you? You have my eyes You have your mother’s name When you came into the world, you cried and it broke my heart I’m dedicating every day to you Domestic life was never quite my style When you smile, you knock me out, I fall apart And I thought I was so smart 6
You will come of age with our young nation We’ll bleed and fight for you, we’ll make it right for you If we lay a strong enough foundation We’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you And you’ll blow us all away Someday, someday Yeah, you’ll blow us all away Someday, someday
Oh Philip, when you smile I am undone My son Look at my son Pride is not the word I’m looking for
I’ll make the world safe and sound for you Will come of age with our young nation We’ll bleed and fight for you, we’ll make it right for you
There is so much more inside me now Oh Philip, you outshine the morning sun My son When you smile, I fall apart And I thought I was so smart My father wasn’t around (my father wasn’t around)
If we lay a strong enough foundation We’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you And you’ll blow us all away Someday, someday Yeah, you’ll blow us all away Someday, someday
I swear that I’ll be around for you (I’ll be around for you) I’ll do whatever it takes I’ll make a million mistakes
October Sun
Daniel Elder (b. 1986) Encore, featuring Art Students from Art III, AP Drawing, and AP 2D Design The air is turning, stirrings of the breeze an exhalation of a summer spent. October Sun sighs.
The earth afire, now flares its gratitude at life-giver in final grand display. October Sun smiles.
Rays of daylight once rosy-cheeked with warmth grow ever paler with the coming chill. October Sun shivers.
Its last refrains a haunting melody to echo fast away until the spring, October Sun sings.
