Footloose Youth Edition

Director’s Note

When you think of Footloose, what comes to mind? I would guess it’s “the movie where dancing is illegal!” Those were also my initial thoughts, but when I looked further, I was surprised to learn that the true story is much more beautiful. In the words of creator Dean Pitchford, “Footloose is actually the story of a man who’s lost his son, a boy who’s lost his father, and how those two help each other to heal.” Ren is the catalyst for shaking up and waking up Bomont from their sleep. For too long, Bomont was crippled with grief and tried to mask it by enforcing strict rules to prevent further pain. But while Bomontians were sticking to strict edicts thinking they were preventing future pain, they were locking their hearts away. Town leader and Reverend Shaw Moore, grieving the loss of his son, bottles his broken heart up so tightly that he nearly explodes. On the outside, he appears collected, but inside he aches. It takes Ren, the spunky, courageous, and passionate newbie, to bring Shaw to terms with his aching and be the one to fill that gap. And in return, Ren finds the acceptance he longs for in Shaw and Ariel Moore.

Reverend Shaw says in the finale, “I did something I haven’t done in a very long time: I laid down my burden [to the Lord]. It was a terrifying moment. And it was exhilarating.” When Shaw let go of control and surrendered to the Lord, he found freedom in Christ. Wow! The Lord is the one who takes away our burdens and heals our wounds. If today you find yourself paralyzed by the past, hear this: the Lord cares for you. Let the Lord take your burden away and experience the healing, freedom, and joy only He can provide! I pray you enjoy Footloose tonight and can “cut loose.”

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

2 Corinthians 3:17

“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.”

Psalm 96:1-2
