ROARING

IN 2020

ONLINE AUCTION Opens March 11 at 5:00pm Closes March 18 at 8:00pm

Dear Friends, Welcome and thank you very much for attending our sixth annual Quest Ball Dinner and Auction. The Quest Ball is the cornerstone of the Extend the Gift Development Office’s annual fund raising work and a beloved Valley Christian tradition. Since 2013, countless VCS families have donated millions of dollars into our programs, students, and teachers through the Quest Ball. This event has become a true testament of our community’s commitment to the mission of Valley Christian Schools. In its short history, the Quest Ball has earned the reputation as one of the most successful school auctions in the South Bay. This is directly attributable to the incredible amount of effort put forth by our staff and volunteers. Without great leadership and dedication, ensuring the Quest Ball’s continued success would be impossible. We would like to sincerely thank our event volunteers, committee members, school senior leaders, auction donors, and table/event sponsors. Your efforts were invaluable. We would like to specifically recognize our committee chairs: Rikki Hanna, Kim Hernandez, Nabila Haq, Diana Matheou, Jane Murchison, and Asha Zahrt. These women were responsible for the “heavy lifting” that made this event possible and their dedication is greatly appreciated by the entire Valley Christian community. Finally, we would like to recognize our Quest Ball co-chairs, Jen LaBarbera and Cheryl Brashears. Jen and Cheryl have graciously agreed to take on the task of leading this event since its inception, a truly special sacrifice of time, talent, and treasure. They have led a tireless effort behind the scenes to ensure each part of this event met the Quest for Excellence standards. The Extend the Gift Development Office could not have produced this event without all of their support, and we cannot thank them enough for their commitment to Valley Christian Schools The Quest Ball’s purpose is to fund the programs that make Valley Christian School’s Quest for Excellence a reality. The money raised tonight will go to the WARRIOR FUND, which provides financial support to VCS’ A3 curriculum (Academic Achievement, Artistic Beauty, and Athletic Distinction), faculty and staff compensation, and our financial aid program, Youth with Promise. Your contributions given at Quest Ball and throughout the year are the backbone of the quality, Christ-centered education VCS is able to provide each and every student. It is the type of education that produces Warriors: tomorrow’s leaders properly equipped to serve God and family while positively impacting their communities and the world. Thank you for your support; it is you that makes our ability to Extend the Gift of Christian education a reality. Enjoy the food and fellowship, and good luck bidding! You truly are making a difference, and your support is greatly appreciated. Regards, Mike LaBarbera Extend the Gift Executive Development Chair 3

A Special Thank You to Our Wonderful Wine Donors

Table Wine Underwritten by Black Ridge Vineyards - Santa Cruz Mountains 2014 Viognier

Pale straw color. Scents of kiwi, apricot, mango, peach, and tropical fruit collaborate for a great first impression. This wine stays true to the aroma profile by displaying similar notes in the palate. The texture of the wine starts as rich, but after time, turns vibrant, ending with a touch of creaminess.

2014 Winemaker’s Red Blend

Black currant, lilac and dried herbs combine for a delicious aromatic entry to this bottling. There is a hearty richness to the palate, with flavors of smoked blackberries framed by firm but forgiving tannins.

Premium Wine Underwritten By Joseph George Fine Wines 2015 Silver Oak Cabernet Alexander Valley

Our 2015 Alexander Valley Cabernet is maroon in color with a garnet hue. It has an enticing nose of maraschino cherries, blackberry bramble and brisket with notes of clove and star anise. Mouthwatering with a juicy entry, this wine has a fruity mid-palate of currant with toasted vanilla and roasted brown sugar character from American oak barrels. Structured tannins provide an elegant character with a long and expressive finish. Given proper cellaring, this wine will provide drinking pleasure through 2041.

2018 Far Niente Chardonnay

Classic Far Niente style with aromas of grilled citrus, melon and honeysuckle with hints of white fig, gardenia and toasted hazelnuts, background of mild toasted oak that adds supportive warmth and richness. A silky entry builds on the palate with a rich texture that continues to evolve. Possessing great structure and length, a sweet core of melon and citrus is supported by white floral and toasted vanilla and baking spice notes. The broad mid palate comes back together with a long bright finish. 5

The Honorary Brian Brager Scholarship

In Loving Memory 10/1/19 8

This past November, the Valley Christian community lost a great friend and supporter with the tragic passing of Brian Brager (VC ‘89). Brian is survived by his lovely wife Brandy, and their two wonderful sons, Chris and Nick. Brian was a huge champion of VCS. Through his company, NTS, Brian saved Valley countless dollars while providing unmatched service in the maintenance of our beautiful campuses. His business acumen and willingness to lend a hand were always on display as he labored to counsel VCS’ leaders on new, innovative, and cost saving methods to address many needs throughout the organization. Brian was also one of our most generous philanthropists, consistently showing his passion for our Youth with Promise program by providing direct funding to support the educational needs of the less fortunate students in our community. A Valley Christian graduate himself, Brian understood the value of the Christ-based education he received, and he often spoke of the life changing impact VCS had on his future. A recipient himself of Youth with Promise Funding during his time at Valley, one of Brian’s favorite stories described the gratitude he felt towards a person whose identity he never knew. This anonymous donor’s faithful generosity made Brian’s time at VCS possible. Although he never had the opportunity to directly thank this individual, Brian thought of his benefactor often, and he always strived to Extend the Gift forward by ensuring that he too took care of the needs of as many students as he could, just as that past donor had done for him. In honor of Brian’s love for and contributions to the mission of Valley Christian Schools, the VCS Board of Directors and I are proud to announce the creation of the Honorary Brian Brager Scholarship. Each year our Youth with Promise committee will select a worthy student who exemplifies the drive and potential of a young Brian Brager. In memory of Brian, this student will receive funding to cover the cost of 100% of his/her education at Valley Christian. Your contributions tonight through our Stand Up for Valley’s Kids segment will help fund this scholarship as well as provide for many other worthy students participating in our Youth with Promise financial aide program. Rest In Peace with the Lord, Brian. You are sadly missed by all of our Valley Christian community. Mike LaBarbera Extend the Gift Executive Development Chair 9

STAND UP FOR VALLEY’S KIDS “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” ~ Philippians 2:4 This is the opportunity to change a student’s life! The most important function of the WARRIOR FUND, and the Quest Ball that supports it, is raising money for Valley Christian Schools’ Youth with Promise, financial aid program. During the 2018-2019 school year, Youth with Promise made it possible for over 282 students to attend Valley Christian. Without financial assistance, these scholarship recipients could not attend Valley Christian Schools or benefit from the opportunities it affords. Youth with Promise not only ensures socio-economic diversity in our schools, it also changes lives. Tonight you will have an opportunity to give a direct donation to Youth with Promise. All funds raised during Stand Up for Valley’s Kids will be earmarked specifically for this program and the students whose lives it will change. Getting involved is simple. When prompted you will simply stand up to show your support for our at risk students. It is a visual representation of our commitment to these families and the generosity of our community supporting them. All donations are celebrated, as the power of this event is everyone working together to support our students, not just those who are able to donate at the highest levels. Donations start at $100. When the level reaches your desired contribution amount you simply sit down and one of our attendants will record your name and bidder number. Should anyone wish to donate at a level of $25,000 or more, these funds will be used towards supporting 100% of the education costs for one of the students in our public/private school partnership, Junior University. These students will be carefully selected from a list facilitated by our public school partners in conjunction with San Jose’s Breakthrough organization. They will be students who are deemed to have the characteristics necessary for success at Valley Christian, but who would not be able to attend without 100% support. This is the opportunity to truly change a child’s life and, as a bonus, your own. We recognize that some of our guests may wish to donate in a less public fashion. For those guests, we have provided donation cards on the table that can be filled out and turned in to the table attendant to participate in supporting Youth with Promise privately. Please join us in what has become one of the most special moments of the Quest Ball. 10
