Welcome toValley Vision It has been a great start to the 2018-19 school year. As we eagerly look forward to what the Lord has in store for this new year, we want to take a moment to celebrate some of the many ways God blessed Valley Christian Schools last year. In the following pages, you see the impact VCS students, staff, and faculty had living out our mission in our communities, nation, and the world. From victories on the field and standing ovations to academic accomplishments and Kingdom advancement, we rejoice in the many ways God is using VCS to lead, serve, and impact in all arenas all while pursuing the Quest for Excellence.

03

Another reason we rejoice is because of our wonderful donors, many of whom are mentioned in the pages of this publication and who represent an even larger group of people who support the mission of VCS. Last year saw over $3.5 million come in from 1,835 people, with $500,000 in direct giving to our amazing faculty. The epic achievements God has accomplished through VCS are made possible by the generosity of the VCS community and the giving of their time, talent, and treasure, and for that we thank you. As Valley Christian Schools approaches its 60th year in 2020, we have much to be thankful for, but nothing more so than our partnership with you, the VCS community. I think Paul said it best in his

letter to the Philippians: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In every prayer for all of you, I always pray with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:3-11). In His Service,

Clifford E. Daugherty, EdD President

04 The 2017 VCES Jog-a-Thon was a huge success; because of the dedication and generous hearts of the VCS community, the students were able to raise almost $80,000.

We are so proud of all of our amazing graduates who were honored for their accomplishments last spring. Congratulations class of 2018, we know there are great things to come for all of you!

VCHS’ mathematicians came home with a fifth place finish in the 2017 Team Scramble, a national mathematics competition where 44 VCHS Math Club students worked to answer one hundred math problems.

The 2017-18 VCHS Yearbook earned the designation of “National Yearbook Program of Excellence,” an honor only 2% of yearbook programs received nationwide.

05

Our International Space Station (ISS) Program received a commendation from the San Jose Mayor’s Office. To date, the students have sent 122 experiments to the ISS, with 37 schools participating in the program.

On one of many trips last year, 12 high school students explored the windy city on a college visit with VCS counselors, touring the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Wheaton College and even watching a Notre Dame football game.

SPRING

ROUND UP VCS’ Annual Festival of the Arts featured K-12 performances from our talented Conservatory students, including our Performing Indoor Ensemble fresh off of their back-to-back WGI World Championship victory. Our high school’s annual “Warrior Warz” featured a fun week of class competitions and a great show of school spirit.

Faculty Spotlight Lily & Scott Homer Who would have thought that two world-class musicians would find themselves teaching students violin in a storage closet? “I think technically they called it a ‘storage room,’” Dr. Scott Homer, VCS Conservatory’s Dean of Music, laughs. But Lily Homer, his wife and fellow VCS faculty insists, “No, it was definitely a closet.” Sitting in their full-sized classrooms now, it’s surreal for Lily and Scott how things have changed since they arrived. “When we first came here 13 years ago, the idea of a conservatory program was just a dream, let alone a building,” Scott says. The Homers’ story is one full of realized dreams, from the building of the Conservatory to their improbable beginnings as musicians. Scott started out on the guitar before his elementary band teacher needed someone to play the violin. “I didn’t know anything about the violin, but when I picked it up I had an immediate rapport with it. It was challenging, but I was so fascinated by how it worked.” Scott stuck with it and eventually went on to attend Manhattan School of Music in New York City, where he met Lily, whose own journey from Shanghai, China was quite different.

“At that time in China, there was a policy that if you had two kids, one had to go work the farms in the countryside. The only exception was if they played sports or an instrument. So my brother and I started playing music. I wanted to play piano, but my family didn’t have a lot of money, and violin was the cheapest.” What started off as a means for survival quickly grew into a passion, one that took Lily around the world to England, France, Israel, and Australia. “I went on my first international tour when I was 15,” Lily says. “But I always wanted to come to America to study; that was my dream. So when I was 19, I packed my bags to audition for every school in New York. I got into all of them, so of course I picked the most famous one.” That school was Juilliard. After graduating from their respective New York City schools, Lily and Scott were blessed with the opportunity to travel, opportunities that landed them in Japan, Taiwan, USA, Europe, and eventually Hong Kong—which was where they were when they heard about an emerging high school conservatory in the Silicon Valley.

07 “It immediately caught our attention,” Lily remembers. “We had heard of very few conservatory programs at the high school level, so it was really a unique concept.” They were intrigued enough to make the trip halfway around the globe, flying from Hong Kong to San Jose for an in-person interview. “We were a little jet lagged,” Scott laughs, “But it was inspirational for us to see the school and hear what Valley was hoping for with the Conservatory and how that lined up with what our vision was.” It’s a vision the Homers had a hand in shaping, and one that has become reality as the Conservatory now offers students not only a beautiful building to play in, but great faculty to train them. “Most schools have one teacher who teaches all of the music classes, but we have the blessing to actually specialize and hire teachers who are experts in strings, voice, percussion, and orchestra,” Lily says. “And as a result of having high-caliber faculty, we now have high-caliber students who come here to train.” Students who sometimes stay in the Homers’ lives for over a decade due to the K-12 nature of the program—an aspect of the school that initially drew the Homers to Valley. “When Lily and I were here for our interview, we were excited by the idea of training students from elementary through high school; we thought it was a great advantage to students,” Scott says. “It’s also a great experience on a personal level to connect with students, and really form relationships with them. Teaching a kid since third grade and then watching them graduate high school is a privilege, but does remind you that you’re getting older.” Though they might feel old, the Homers show no signs of slowing down, with trips to Nashville to record music for a Japanese anime movie, and Scott jetting off to China to be a concertmaster for a pop orchestra. Even with their busy schedule, Lily and Scott still make it a priority to share their passion for travel with their students. “We’ve been able to see the world and broaden our horizons musically as well as culturally. We want that same experience for our students,” Scott says. “Valley has been really supportive of us taking students overseas—to China, Indonesia—and it’s something we look forward to doing more.” No matter where their next adventure takes them, Lily and Scott appreciate the journey God has taken them on to get here, even that brief pit stop in the storage closet.

WALK

UPDATE

The Warriors Advancing the Lord’s Kingdom (WALK) program offers students an immersive cultural experience while living out Jesus’ call to serve others. Students gain an understanding of what it is like to love in the face of poverty, destruction, and hopelessness as they engage in community-building service projects. What started as a student-led club has now turned into a school-wide movement; last year, nearly 200 members of the VCS community spent their winter, spring, and summer vacations serving in six different countries, including Chile, South Africa, and Mexico. One such student was Grace Kennedy, who went to Mexico this summer before starting her sophomore year of high school. “For the first time, I had the opportunity to live out my faith, and I learned there is no better feeling then serving others and being used by God. Moments spent with the kids in the community were like Heaven on Earth, and I can’t wait to continue to be a part of all that God is doing around the world.”

Grace is not alone in feeling the impact of what God is doing around the world through VCS. In the past five years, VCS has built 11 houses in Chile, helped build and furnish a Creative Art Center in Thailand, led feeding programs in the worst slums of Haiti, and baptized over 20 students while on mission. Additionally, Grace Public School (VCS’ sister school in India) has seen amazing growth over our eight-year partnership—including efforts to soon build a high school! Thank you to those who have supported all of our WALK programs; we look forward to encouraging you with the work God is doing through VCS for many years to come.

VCJH Rube Goldberg The entire Valley Christian Junior High (VCJH) student body spent the month of April designing and building their very own Rube Goldberg Machine, one that they hoped would launch them into history with a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title. “These junior highers built a very complex piece of machinery,” VCJH faculty Nancy Franklin says. “It’s incredibly difficult work, but the learning that went on was also incredible. To see these kids and the faculty coming together to get this done is inspirational.” The record title was held by Scandiweb from Riga, Latvia, whose 412-step Rube Goldberg Machine kicked off their Christmas tree lighting ceremony in 2016. For VCJH’s record-attempt, it was all-hands on deck to complete their proposed 450-step machine. “Our entire student body participated in the building process,” VCJH Principal Brian Clemons explains. “It was important for us to not only break the record, but also get all 687 students involved and excited about STEM.” The event took place April 25th, with the whole school cheering on the machine as it set off a chain of linked experiments before celebrating with a balloon drop from the ceiling. With so many moving pieces, the students knew they were facing an uphill battle, but it was one they were excited to take on.

“Even though it was hard, the challenge is what made it fun,” eighth grader Nathan says. “I learned how to build and put together machines, and also teamwork and new ways of seeing things.” An official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator presided over the event and told the students that even though they were unsuccessful in breaking the record, that she was incredibly impressed with them. “The passion for and dedication to science, technology, engineering, and math that you have displayed by taking on this enormous goal is truly inspiring. I hope that this attempt motivates you to continue to reach for the stars, because thinking outside the box can lead to the best experiences in life.” Principal Clemons agrees, echoing his pride in the students’ accomplishments, even if it didn’t result in a record. “The GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt was what was important, and we hope it encouraged other schools to try something similar. We’d love a little friendly competition,” Clemons laughs. “Ultimately, we want to send the message that engineering is for every student.” Regardless of their success, VCJH knows it was a day for the record books.

“Ultimately, we want to send the message that engineering is for every student.”

Annual Giving Report

ear VCS Community, We are thrilled to share all of the exciting things God has done this year at Valley Christian Schools through your generous support. Together, you contributed over $3.5 million dollars to the mission of VCS, including nearly $2.4 million to the WARRIOR FUND. The commitment of our board and executive team is to use those donations to maintain a Quest for Excellence in all of our programs, provide the support needed to our front-line educators, and continue to create WARRIORS: tomorrow’s leaders properly equipped to serve God and family while positively impacting their community and the world. In the 2017-18 school year: • VCES students swept the top four spots in the ACSI Math Olympics • 454 junior high students achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher • VCHS class of 2018 received nearly $5,000,000 in college scholarships • VCS students completed of community service

• 175 students went on mission trips around the world

As you can see, your investment in VCS is making a difference, not just in the lives of our students, but in our community, nation, and the world. One of the many ways we partner with the VCS community is through our development events. Our 4th Annual Quest Ball Dinner and Auction saw a packed house during our first year at a new venue—the Fairmont Hotel. When the last bid had been placed, VCS had raised over $1,000,000! Thank you to our co-chairs, Jen LaBarbera and Cheryl Brashears, and all of the committees for working tirelessly to make this such a great success. Another event made possible by the incredible support of volunteers was the 24th Annual Golf Classic, where VCS supporters, staff, and alumni came together to compete in VCS’ longest standing fundraising event at Silver Creek Country Club. This year, Billy Jowers, Mike Lien, Joe Macchiarella, and Brad Dickay took home the top prize in our Championship Flight, while our Dean of Students and head football coach Mike Machado’s team defended their title and won the Classic Flight. In the following pages, you find the names of those who made gifts to VCS during the 2017-18 school year. We pray that the number of those who partner with us through tax-deductible giving, volunteering, or attendance at our events continues to grow in the coming year. Thank you for believing and investing in the mission of VCS. Extending the Gift together, Eddie Moore, Mike LaBarbera, and the Development team

GIVING HIGHLIGHTS AND UPDATES • This year, 411 Youth with Promise recipients and other studets from economically disadvantaged circumstances were able to attend VCS due to our WARRIOR FUND contributors.

paid down our total debt to below $38 million. Our new low-fixed interest loan is allowing VCS to follow a schedule for a complete payoff by 2032 or sooner.

• During the past three years, VCS has increased our teacher salary schedule by 25 percent. While VCS is now on par with local public school districts, we continue to strive to match and exceed the compensation found in other West Catholic League schools.

• We expect to redirect our $3.8 million per year for debt service payments toward increased teacher and staff compensation when we make our final principal and interest payment.

• Our teachers received an unexpected Christmas bonus as the result of a $500,000 gift given by one of our donors. • VCS matching for retirement contributions will increase from 4 to 6 percent this year for all full-time employees. • Historically, VCS’ total debt peaked at $61.5 million, but by the end of our 60th anniversary year in 2020, VCS will have

• VCS just completed the cash purchase of 3.5 acres of adjacent land along Diamond Heights Drive on the north side of our campus for the development of teacher housing. • In response to many of our supporters who are interested in including VCS in their estate planning to help ensure Valley Christian Schools’ legacy for future generations, we are working on a formal legacy giving program that will be unveiled in the coming months.

YOUTH WITH PROMISE Financial Assistance Programs Valley Christian Schools’ financial assistance programs play a vital role in ensuring economic diversity in the student body by allowing qualified candidates from all economic circumstances to enroll and attend our school. In the 2017-18 fiscal year, VCS awarded nearly $3,500,000 in financial assistance. One of the most critical components of raising this money is our Stand up for Valley’s Kids program. Each year at the Quest Ball, attendees have an opportunity to stand up and make a direct donation to help students in need. Through Stand up for Valley’s Kids and Youth with Promise, we are partnering with you to change the lives of VCS Warriors.

Calling all

Alumni We are constantly on the lookout for ways to better include our alumni in what’s happening at VCS. One way to stay connected is through volunteering your time, talents, or resources to give back to the community that helped shape you. Another is to stop by one of our VCS events like Homecoming, where you can cheer on your fellow Warriors while also picking up some free alumni swag. Our newest tool to help you “keep in touch” is our re-vamped VCHS alumni networking website. Head to vchsalumni.net to create a profile to stay up-to-date on all of the on-campus happenings, and also re-connect with old classmates, faculty, and community members. To find out how to get involved or volunteer for any of our community or fundraising events, contact Jessica Carter at (jcarter@vcs.net).
