Faces OF THE CROSS
Their choices and ours...
A LENTEN DEVOTIONAL
by members of Valley Christian Center
He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!
One of the greatest joys we have in our Christian lives is knowing that our Jesus has conquered death. Born of a virgin, crucified with common criminals, yet raised to life on the third day, Jesus is all that the scriptures claim Him to be – the Savior of the World! Speculatively written from the characters point of view, Faces of the Cross intends to bring life to the inner thoughts and emotions of 40 individuals who played a role in the crucifixion and/or resurrection of Jesus Christ. I encourage you to spend time getting to know each character through prayer, thought, study and contemplation.
Ask yourself, “How would I have felt?” or “What would I have done?” had you been in the same circumstance as the character you are reading about. Think about what your character might be seeing, hearing, sensing, or even smelling as they play their part in the greatest story ever told. Take time to read the passages of scripture that accompany each day’s devotion as well as to think through the questions that are presented - not in a hurried fashion, but rather in a way that honors Jesus and allows who He is to become a greater part of who you are. Pastor Jimi Merrell
DAY 1 | Matthew 26:1-13, Mark 14:1-11
Today’s Face of the Cross: Simon the Leper Meaning: “He Who Hears” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut
Jesus visited Simon’s house in Bethany for supper two days before the Passover and Crucifixion. This is where Jesus’ head was anointed with a costly ointment.
Just days ago I was an outcast, a useless member of the society. I had no hope as my disease was incurable and death was my only future. Then I met a man called Jesus, a man who heals me, renews me, gives me dignity, and raises me up from the ashes and breathes life into me. There I was at home, with my family and friends and with the very Man who gave me life. I listened intently to his teaching, watching him get anointed with ointment and in my heart I felt an over-powering love from Jesus. He is not like anyone I have ever known. He heals, He cares, He loves, He even came to my home to honor me, He speaks about God’s kingdom, He says there is only one way to the Father, and He is that way. There is an overpowering realization of the divinity of this Jesus who saved me. When I surrendered my spirit, a new desire was born to follow the ONE, to cling to Him as closely as I can. I, Simon, declare that Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed One! – TINA WIG
Between the Lines Has a new desire birthed in your spirit today? Lord, you are the ONE…you are the Way and I surrender to Your love!
Behind the Mask Simon did not just receive healing; he received life to the fullest – an everlasting life, the way to the Father.
DAY 2 | Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-44
Today’s Face of the Cross: Mary (sister of Martha) Meaning: “Sea of Bitterness” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut Jesus came and taught the Word of God in my sister’s home. Who was this Man who allowed women and children to be in His Presence? I actually sat right there at His feet. The Words He spoke were unlike anything I had ever heard. Truth and Love combined. I was allowed to stay; He Himself told me I had a choice, and I chose to stay right there. Who is this Man? Do you know Him? We felt loved by Him and we loved Him. One day, while Jesus was in another town, my brother Lazarus got very sick and died. We knew if Jesus were here, He would save him. Finally Jesus returned; I ran out to meet Him and when I did, I fell to His feet and asked Him, ”Why didn’t You come?’ Jesus groaned, then wept with us. He then called out: “Lazarus come out,” and my brother did! – Vickie Conde
Between the Lines Do we know just how merciful and compassionate is our God?
Behind the Mask I am overjoyed to know my God is compassionate and faithful.
Mary of Bethany was the sister of Martha and Lazarus whom Jesus loved and raised from the dead.
DAY 3 | John 17:1-26
Today’s Face of the Cross: Woman Who Anointed Jesus Meaning of Anointed: “To put oil on during a religious ceremony as a sign of sanctification or consecration.”
Director’s Cut
Many scholars teach that the value of this oil, 300 denarii, would have been equal to that made by a well-paid laborer over the course of an entire year.
I feel so nervous walking into a room full of men, but I don’t care what they are going to say. It’s not the first time they have criticized me for being close to Jesus and sitting at His feet. How can I not be when He has revolutionized my life? He forgave me of my sin, He healed me, and He transformed my life. He has turned my tears of mourning into dancing. He has turned the many tears I cried into tears of joy and laughter. I walk with such confidence now, when I used to be so afraid. I want to pour out my love on Him as He poured it out on me. I know what they are going to say, but I don’t care. He’s been telling us He is going to leave; they are going to kill my Jesus. How can they be so blind? He tells them but they don’t listen. I must show Him how much I love Him before He leaves. This alabaster jar is all I have and I want to pour it on Him as he poured His love on me. The cost means nothing to me. He is worth everything I have. Who cares if it costs me more than a year’s wages or even a hundred year’s wages. I know He’s leaving us soon; I know it, I feel it. I’m grieved in my spirit to know that but I must anoint His head with oil as He anointed mine. I must, no matter the cost. I want to give Him all I have! – Rima Kopti
Between the Lines What will it cost you to pour your love on Jesus as Mary did? She gave Him all she had; are you willing to do the same?
Behind the Mask It is with joy and gladness that I come to pour this alabaster jar on my Jesus. I hold no regrets. He holds the key to my heart!
DAY 4 | John 17:1-26
Today’s Face of the Cross: Jehovah | God the Father Meaning: “I am that I am” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut My Son, I have heard Your pleas for those I have given You. As You and I are one, so You, your Disciples and I are now one. As You complete Your work, know that Your Father is pleased. At the same time, Your passion will take You away from Me for a time, which brings Me great sorrow. Do not fear, for I will send the Holy Spirit to them to provide comfort, power and strength. You will see as You return to Your rightful place, that all will be in order as it has been since the beginning of time. Through You, there is perfection. In sacrifice, compassion and love, You have shown them the greatest commandment through the example of Your life. We know that You will complete the mission that was foreseen when We were one before the creation of the world. That through you, all may come to know Me and receive eternal life. – BILL ADAMS
Between the Lines What was God the Father feeling watching Jesus’ Passion?
Behind the Mask It is finished……..
The Jews considered this name to be so sacred that it was never pronounced, except once a year by the high priest on the Day of Atonement.
Sunday Soundtrack
Arms Wide Open By Misty Edwards
“And then I saw him there, hanging on a tree, looking at me, staring through me I could not escape those beautiful eyes And I began to weep and weep With arms wide open, a heart exposed and bleeding.
DAY 5 | Genesis 3:1-5, Isaiah 14:12-15, Ezekiel 28:12-19, John 10:1-10
Today’s Face of the Cross: Satan Meaning: “Adversary”
Director’s Cut I absolutely loathe Him. I had dominion over the earth. He didn’t even question that fact when I tempted Him in the desert. All was going according to my plan. I even turned His own disciple, Judas, against Him. I entered Judas and sealed His fate. I am ruler and destroyer of this world and nothing is going to stop me. My hierarchy of princes, powers, rulers and thrones are in place to carry out my bidding. When I drove Him to the cross, it was supposed to be finished! Good riddance! He tricked me. Why couldn’t He just die and go back to His heavenly abode? Had I known of His secret plan for the Cross, I would have done everything in my power to stop it. Not accelerate it. He played me all along. You don’t mess with me. I will destroy every last one of Your precious little people. My time may be up soon, but a little time is all I need for collateral damage. What could He possibly gain from all of this? – MIKE NORTON
Between the Lines If Jesus defeated Satan at the cross, why does God allow him to roam the earth in our end times?
Behind the Mask Satan regrets fighting loosing battles – that always end up glorifying the one true God.
Originally created with matchless beauty, he became filled with pride and arrogance and desired to be “like the Most High” before leading an angelic rebellion that ultimately lead to his ouster from heaven.
DAY 6 | Matthew 26:36-46, Mark 14:32-42, Luke 22:7-46
Today’s Faces of the Cross: Ministering Angels at Gethsemane Meaning: “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” Hebrews 11:14
Director’s Cut
The word “angel” comes from the Greek word “aggelos,” which means messenger.
We brought the “good news” in what seemed just only minutes ago. What good news is there now? Mortals try to love Him, follow Him, and serve Him. But they are weak. Try as they might, though they desire to do good – there the Son is, in anguish about what lies ahead, sweating blood – and they can’t even stay awake. His earthly creations cannot remain strong – they are human. The Father created them so. But how can the Father’s only Son be so alone? If not for us, He would be. The Father knew it would be this way. This is why the Father created us, and sends us when and where we are needed. We alone can comfort Him and bring Him His Father’s peace and strength. We will keep the enemy from Him for as long as the Father commands us, and be there when the enemy has his way. We will do what we’ve been assigned to do. What an honor and privilege it is to serve, but oh so difficult sometimes. – Margaret McCollum
Between the Lines Do we really feel just a little lower than the angels? (Hebrews 2:7)
Behind the Mask We can persevere difficult times, because there will be “good news” to come.
DAY 7 | Matthew 26:1-55, Matthew 27:1-10
Today’s Face of the Cross: Judas Meaning: “Praised” (Greek)
Director’s Cut Replaying it in my head, I hear the clanging of the thirty silver coins hitting my palms and Rabbi’s words echoing in my ears. It’s too much to bear. He chose me. I witnessed miracles and sat under His teaching. I stole from Him. Sold Him. I got so angry. Money could have been made from the perfume. Knowing all along I’d betrayed Him with a kiss, setting into motion unchangeable consequences. I tried to undo it, confessed to His innocence, but no one cared. I was alone with my actions. The same way you, my brothers, will be alone before Him. Heed my warning. Where your weakness lies, there is a door where the enemy lurks to slip through to alter the course of your life. As the Lord scans the earth, find your self-blameless before the Lord. – EVELISSE D’AMELIO
Between the Lines What are you attempting to hide under religious clothes? Is it time for heart examination?
Behind the Mask Judas regrets to the point of suicide what he had done to the Lord.
Judas Iscariot was one of the twelve apostles. He betrayed Jesus into the hands of the chief priests for thirty pieces of silver.
DAY 8 | Matthew 26:36-55, Mark 14:32-51, Luke 22:39-53, John 18:1-14
Today’s Face of the Cross: Malchus Meaning: “Ruler” (Greek)
Director’s Cut Malchus was a servant of the high priest Caiaphas. Peter cut off his right ear at the time of Jesus’ arrest in the garden of Gethsemane. However, Jesus touched Malchus’ ear and healed it.
Here we are finally, to arrest that man Jesus, that blasphemer who has the High Priest and everyone in the temple on edge. As our large group approaches, one of that man’s followers leaps out at us screaming and swinging his sword. He meant to take off my head, but I ducked and he caught my ear and sliced it off. I fell to my knees; oh the pain! I grabbed my ear and the pain and blood were great! “I’ll kill you all,” I screamed and I meant it. Then I felt someone take hold of my head with both hands, covering my ears. In that instant, I felt something like lightning strike through my body. I opened my eyes and it was that man, Jesus. He looked at me, piercing to the depths of my soul with a look that….I don’t know what it was; but it wasn’t anger or hate. He helped me up and my ear was okay and the blood was gone. What was this about, what had just happened? Then, at the trial with Caiaphas, I saw that look again. As that man was being beaten, mocked and humiliated, He just looked at each of us with that emotion that I could not identify. Who is this man? Finally, we get Him to the cross; and as He is being lifted up, His eyes lock on mine and I can’t look away. This time I know what I see in His eyes….it’s love, pure love. Could it all be true? Could He really be the Messiah, the Son of God? – LINDA LOPES
Between the Lines From the cross, Jesus looks straight at you. What do you see in His eyes?
Behind the Mask At the cross, Malchus recognized the love of the Father.
DAY 9 | Mark 14:43-51
Today’s Face of the Cross: Young Man (possibly John Mark) Meaning: “Praised” (Servant of the Gracious God)
Director’s Cut That day, I stood behind Jesus through the hardest hours He ever had to face. Rarely was Jesus sad, let alone in agony. On this day, though, His agony was evident. I tailed Jesus and His disciples into Gethsemane and watched the man that I had grown to love cry out in deep emotional pain to the Father. I had stood with Him through the most brilliant moments of His life. His miracles and teachings changed me. I never thought I’d find myself here. The crowds approached Him and I watched as the disciples quickly deserted Him. “I’ll never walk away from Jesus,” I used to exclaim. Yet today, the stakes were too high. I’ve seen mobs like that destroy a man, so you could imagine the fear that overcame me as the crowds approached. That moment was the birthplace of my life’s greatest regret. I was unfaithful to the man who had shown me what true faithfulness looked like. I abandoned Him when times were difficult. Today, I trust in His grace to cover the sin of that moment, but I urge you, learn from my unfaithfulness. – ANTHONY McLEOD
Between the Lines Do you believe your faith is strong enough to follow Christ into the darkest hours of life?
Behind the Mask My biggest regret is abandoning Christ in the hour of crisis.
John was the surname of Mark, the author of the Gospel of Mark. He accompanied Paul and Barnabas on one of their missionary journeys.
DAY 10 | Matthew 26:57-67, John 18:1-23
Today’s Face of the Cross: Caiaphas the High Priest Meaning: “As Beautiful” (Aramaic)
Director’s Cut Jesus of Nazareth! That foolish zealot! I finally have Him right where I want Him! I had to do something about Him. The Romans allow me to keep my office as high priest because I maintain order for them. The mock trial was a stroke of genius: separate Him from His followers, drag Him to the temple, and bury Him in false testimony. I knew He would slip up eventually. I was surprised that He kept silent so long. That He did not respond to the torrent of false accusations. I’m sure the beatings and whippings finally got to Him. I confess, I was worried that His silence would win out and He would go free. Then, an inspiration. I simply confronted Him: “Are you the King of the Jews?” He surprised me when He looked me in the eye and finally spoke the blasphemous words that sealed His doom: “It is as you say.” He dared to claim that He is God! Pilate has no choice. He must crucify this false Messiah!
Caiaphas was the high priest of the Jews during the reign of Tiberius Caesar and was the son-inlaw of Annas.
– Bob McCollum
Between the Lines How can you reach the people in your life who reject Jesus as Caiaphas did?
Behind the Mask I am a very powerful man. I don’t need to be saved.
Sunday Soundtrack Above All
By Michael J. Smith “Crucified, laid behind a stone You lived to die, rejected and alone Like a rose, trampled on the ground You took the fall and thought of me Above all.
DAY 11 | Matthew 26:31-75, Mark 14:27-72, Luke 22:7-62, John 18:15-27
Today’s Face of the Cross: Peter Meaning: “Rock” (Greek)
Director’s Cut I didn’t understand why you served, why you suffered, why you let them kill You.
Peter became the leader of the apostles after Jesus’ ascension. He was present at the house of Jairus, the Transfiguration and at Gethsemane. Peter hailed Jesus as the Christ at Philippi, but denied Him three times in the courtyard of the high priest.
I first met you fishing; I had fished all night and caught nothing. You told me to put my nets out, and to my surprise, the nets were bursting. I knew you were The Christ! You told me to follow You. After I denied You three times, You again called me by name, “tell the Disciples and Peter.” After You were killed, I went fishing again and it was like the first time I saw you; “Cast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” Lord Jesus, we met fishing and the last time I saw You, I was fishing. My last memory of You was not me denying You three times but You asking me three times if I loved You. “You know that I love you.” You redeemed and forgave me and told me to “feed your sheep, tend your sheep, feed Your sheep.” – Juan Garcia
Between the Lines What did you feel in the moment right after you denied Him?
Behind the Mask My regret is I still at times deny You and when I realize I do, in brokenness I drop to my knees to worship You.
DAY 12 | Matthew 26:69-74, Mark 14:66-72, Luke 22:54-60, John 18:15-18
Today’s Face of the Cross: Servant Girl Who Confronted Peter Meaning: “A person who labors or exerts himself for the benefit of another, his master or employer.”
Director’s Cut I was sure He was the one, but now … I have doubt. I have heard the stories of the long awaited Messiah all my life. My master, the high priest, instructs us to live in expectation. When I saw the Rabbi – the one named Jesus – riding into Jerusalem, something in my soul stirred. An angry mob brought Him to my master’s house tonight. As Jesus passed by me, I looked up and into His eyes. And again, my soul stirred; the Messiah was finally here! I wanted to leap with joy, but just then my master screamed at Him: “Blasphemer!” “No!” I wanted to shout. “This is the Messiah!” Instead, I left the house and wandered in the courtyard. There I saw one of His followers. Surely he could tell me more of the Messiah! But when I approached him, he rebuked me and said he did not know Jesus. I KNOW he was one of his disciples. If Jesus truly were the Messiah, why would this man deny Him? Maybe I was wrong … – PATRICE VAN DUSSEN
Between the Lines In what ways do we deny knowing Jesus?
Behind the Mask Someone, please … tell me the truth about Jesus.
All three of Peter’s denials took place in the courtyard of the High Priest Caiaphas.
DAY 13 | Matthew 27:11-26, Mark 15:1-15, Luke 22:66 – 23:25, John 18:28 – 19:16
Today’s Face of the Cross: Pontius Pilate Meaning: “Armed with a dart” (Greek)
Director’s Cut
The fifth Prefect of the Roman province of Judaea, from AD 26–36. He is best known as the judge at the trial of Jesus and the man who reluctantly authorized the crucifixion of Jesus.
I am Pontius Pilate, Rome’s representative over Judea. I am a person of great power, yet I met Someone who knew real authority: Jesus. The Jewish crowd was screaming for His life. They brought Him to me because of their own envy and power struggles. Their leaders were demanding I find Him guilty of treason because He claimed to be a King. I found no fault with Him. In questioning Jesus, I found myself looking for a reason to release Him. This man was dressed in rags, yet He spoke with such power that I could not dismiss Him. He spoke of His kingdom not being of this world. He spoke with power that I could not dismiss. I was amazed. Stunned. The crowd shouts... “Crucify Him!” He says nothing. I thought I was the strong one. I thought I knew what power was, but I relented to the will of the angry crowd. Beaten and scourged...wearing a crown of thorns and a purple robe. I announced: “Behold, Your King!” – NANCY ADAMS
Between the Lines As you “Behold your King,” how do you respond?
Behind the Mask Pilate’s regret or contemplation: He sent an innocent man to die to appease an angry crowd.
DAY 14 | Matthew 27:11-26
Today’s Face of the Cross: Pilate’s Wife (possibly Claudia Proculus) Meaning: “A woman joined to a man in marriage; a female spouse.”
Director’s Cut As the wife of the Governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, I was afforded many pleasures along with one terrifying dream. I was proselyte to Judaism, among the women of higher classes over whom the Jewish religion exercised considerable influence. We discussed the events of the day, so we did hear much about “that man” whom the Jews wanted to kill. I sent a note to my husband, telling him to “Have nothing to do with that just man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.” I loved my husband, although he was known to be merciless, cruel and habitually brutal, but I didn’t want anything bad to happen to him. I do believe that Pilate believed “that man” was innocent, but he was caught up in the politics of the day. He tried numerous ploys to avoid having him put to death, but when the Jews threatened to clue Caesar in on the events, Pilate caved in, washed his hands and “that innocent man” was put to death. – EDDIE JO MACK
Between the Lines Are you the voice of warning to your loved ones?
Behind the Mask I rejoice in you God, I reacted upon your word.
Dreams were given great significance in the ancient world, more so than they are now. Usually they were seen as warnings against some danger, or as prompts sent by God to persuade a person to take a particular course of action.
DAY 15 | Luke 23:1-25
Today’s Face of the Cross: Herod Meaning: “Heroic” (Greek)
Director’s Cut “Jesus,” you ask? Yes, I’ve met him. My story? Well…
Herod was the name of the royal dynasty that ruled over Israel during the time of Jesus. Herod the Great tried to kill Jesus as an infant; his son Herod Antipas was a coconspirator in Jesus’ crucifixion.
I thought I had gotten rid of that annoying little snit…John the Baptist. After all, I had his head served up on a platter after Salome danced for me on my birthday. But I was convinced that he had risen from the dead in the form of this Jesus. How else could he have performed the miracles I kept hearing about? For some time I wanted to see this Jesus. I wanted to see Him perform a miracle with my own eyes! Imagine my surprise when Pilate, whom I despised, sent Him to me! I plied Jesus with question after question…yet He gave me no answers. The Jewish leaders were there intensely accusing Him. Then, I and my soldiers began to ridicule and mock Him! We dressed Him in a fancy robe and when we tired of Him, sent Him back to Pilate. I must say…that was fun! So much so that I now actually consider Pilate a friend! I heard He was crucified and later His followers claimed He rose from the dead. – tim ludDen
Between the Lines Herod Antipas mocked Him… what will you do with this Jesus?
Behind the Mask Despite all the power I have possessed… I still feel empty.
DAY 16 | John 18:19-40, Matthew 27:1-9, Luke 22:61-77
Today’s Face of the Cross: Chief Priests, Elders, Teachers of the Law Definition: “Represented the people before God, and offered various sacrifices prescribed in the law.”
Director’s Cut For generations, we have devoted our lives to the work of God; we labor in the temple, we teach in the synagogues, we are chosen and privileged. We have studied the scrolls and have followed each law and regulation, as we should. If Jesus were truly the Messiah, would you not think that we would be the first to know? Do you not think that His arrival would be welcomed? Listen to us; “Nothing good has ever come out of Nazareth!” Who is He to challenge how we have been doing things for years? We will not let Him or His followers continue to destroy our way of life; in fact, we will destroy Him. – cASSIE TUNDAG
Between the Lines Have you missed seeing who Jesus really is?
Behind the Mask We sentenced the One who we lived in anticipation to see.
Their influence with the people was exceedingly great. That influence was mainly due to the fact that they appeared to be so learned; they were expounders of the law and they occupied a leading place in the worship of the synagogue.
Sunday Soundtrack
See His Love By Jesus Culture
“See His love nailed onto a cross Perfect and blameless life given as sacrifice See Him there all in the name of love Broken yet glorious, all for the sake of us.
DAY 17 | Matthew 27:11-26, Mark 15:1-14, Luke 23:1-23, John 19:1-16
Today’s Face of the Cross: Jewish Crowds Noun: “A large number of persons gathered together; a throng or mob.”
Director’s Cut Crucify Jesus? Wait! What’s happening? Isn’t this the prophet that everyone in Israel is talking about? I thought He healed lepers and cripples and fed over 5000 with just a couple of fishes and a few loaves of bread and even raised that guy Lazarus from the dead. Is he going to show the Romans who’s boss? “Crucify him!” Finally we can be rid of this blasphemer before He turns everyone against us and brings more trouble from Rome. I hate Him so. Jesus dares to call us hypocrites – we, the Sanhedrin, the most respected and righteous members of the community with our unmatched knowledge of the law. Louder, louder: “Crucify him!” If He is the Christ, why has He allowed Himself to be arrested and beaten? If He really is the Son of God, why doesn’t He prove it by doing something miraculous? If He is the Messiah, where is His kingdom? What a pathetic loser! How could I ever have hoped that He could be a king? “Crucify him!” If He can’t save Himself, how can he save me? – Carolyn Wetmore
Between the Lines Would you stand on the side of Jesus, or would you go along with the crowd?
Behind the Mask If Jesus were truly your King, how would your life be different?
Crucifixion is the decision of the people. Jesus shall suffer the fate that was due the crime of Barabbas who had been released in his stead.
DAY 18 | Mark 15:1-15, Matthew 27:11-26, Luke 23:1-25
Today’s Face of the Cross: Barabbas Meaning: “Son of Abba” (Aramaic)
Director’s Cut I’m cursed, and there will be no forgiveness. I will die an excruciating death, crucified on the Roman road outside of the city. I’ve fought in battles and riots, killed men during fights, and I’m not one to back down from a fight. But standing here in chains before Pilate, knowing the cross is before me, I’m afraid of death and judgment.
Barabbas was an “insurrectionist and murderer” that Pontius Pilate proposed to condemn to death instead of Jesus, whom he wished to release.
“Which should I release to you? This murderer known as ‘Father’s Son’? Or Jesus the self-proclaimed Messiah?” This is the Jesus of Nazareth I’ve heard so much about? It’s horrible to see how much they’ve already tortured Him; He barely looks human. Isn’t this the man who spoke of peace, forgiveness, and turning the other cheek? He barely has a cheek left to offer them to strike again. His teaching of repaying evil with good is too soft. That would have been my cross that Jesus is on. The agony He is suffering should be mine. I deserve the rejection and ridicule He is suffering. My guilt consumes me as I see Him suffer in my place. I’m supposed to die; He’s supposed to live forever. – bob smiley
Between the Lines The name Barabbas means “son of father,” but who was his father? (See John 8:41-42)
Behind the Mask I am my Father’s son, and Jesus died on my cross.
DAY 19 | Matthew 27:27-3, Mark 15:16-20, John 19:1-16
Today’s Faces of the Cross: Soldiers at Praetorium (scourging of Jesus) Definition: “Tent of the commander, or praetor, denotes military headquarters.”
Director’s Cut Soldiers, gather around! What do we have here today, boys? They say this one thinks He’s a king? The king of the filthy Jews. Ha! Look at Him, He’s about as royal as a dog. Strip Him naked! Put this purple robe on Him and let’s give Him a crown fit for His crimes. Oh, hail King – we salute and bow before your greatness. You are so worthy that we spit in Your face and strike You with our fists. Do you have nothing to say, King of the Jews? Look me in the face when I salute you, King! Or would you like another smack from the royal scepter? Silence? A King ought to say something for himself. – drew heise
Between the Lines Have you ever disrespected the name of Christ?
Behind the Mask How does this Jew not fear us or cry out for mercy?
The praetorian were the special troops who acted as bodyguards for the emperor and other important military and civil leaders; in addition they would have custody of imperial prisoners in Rome.
DAY 20 | Matthew 27:32-44, Mark 15:21-32, Luke 23:26-43
Today’s Face of the Cross: Simon of Cyrene Meaning: “He Who Hears” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut For 11 years, I planned my trip to Jerusalem. It’s a long journey from Cyrene but being in the Holy Land for the Passover is a thrill that I wanted my sons to experience. I arrived expecting a significant spiritual event but never imagined that my life would be changed. We had just arrived when we were drawn into a crowd that was screaming and chanting and surging towards the road. I tried to break free from the throng but in an instant I was grabbed by a Roman soldier, had a cross on my back and was told to be quiet and walk. I was terrified, but then the man looked me in the eye. I didn’t recognize Him. He said nothing. I wasn’t sure how He was still walking, but I knew – somehow I knew that while I was carrying His cross, He was suffering for me. After the crucifixion, I learned everything I could about Jesus and devoted my time to studying and praying with other believers. I have never returned to Cyrene.
Simon of Cyrene was chosen to help bear the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Cyrene is located in Libya.
– SAUL DREVITCH
Between the Lines Simon was forced – are you ready to choose, daily, to take up a cross and follow?
Behind the Mask A frightening moment led me to salvation and a few precious moments with my savior.
DAY 21 | Matthew 27:32-44, Luke 23:26-43
Today’s Face of the Cross: Thief on the Cross Definition: “One who steals, especially by stealth.”
Director’s Cut I’m a thief hanging on a cross with someone who claims He is God’s Son. “So save you and me if you are,” I call out. How easy it is to join the world in denigrating you and your claim. But, what if the sarcasm is true; what if You are the King, the Son of God? I hear You ask Your father to forgive them. Is God Your father? I stole in secret and I was caught, yet I hang here next to You and I realize not even the claim as king deserves this suffering on a cross. Now aware, I fear God more than death! I ask the other thief, “Do you not also fear God? You and I face the consequences of our crimes, our past choices and not He.” I sense this man called Jesus knows my heart and I humbly ask, “Lord remember me!” Oh what glory! Jesus, the Son of God, even in His pain intercedes for me and promises paradise—today! – Michelle wilborn
Between the Lines Do you stand with the world or with Jesus?
Behind the Mask With Jesus’ love you are never alone. (Romans 8:38-39)
Though Roman law usually spared Roman citizens from being crucified, crucifixion was used especially against rebellious foreigners, military enemies, violent criminals, thieves, and slaves.
DAY 22 | Matthew 27:32-44, Mark 15:21-32, Luke 23:26-43, John 19:17-27
Today’s Faces of the Cross: Soldiers Who Cast Lots Definition: “An enlisted person or a non-commissioned officer who fights on foot.” The Roman government reserved the right of capital punishment in which Roman soldiers presided over the execution. Crucifixion was usually reserved for acts of insurrection against Rome.
Director’s Cut Who was this man?! My buddy Anthony won His robe when we rolled dice for it – we thought it was a real prize, but I think we messed up. We all hate being assigned to this god-forsaken Jewish state; WE MISS ROME! I was angry and full of hate so I spit on Him and mocked Him as being the King of the Jews, but then when He cried out and died, all hell broke loose. I’ve killed many men – held their guts in my hands, but nothing like this had ever happened! The darkness, the earthquake, the rocks shattering, people coming out of their graves – I’ve never been so afraid! But then a still voice came to my mind, starting as a whisper then a shout. I fell down and cried for the first time in my life. I worshiped the God of this Man! Like the thief, I asked, “Remember me.” I knew without a doubt this man was different than any other because He really was the Son of God! – Dennis Wilborn
Between the Lines Like this centurion, have you seen who Jesus really is? What are you going to do about it?
Behind the Mask Imagine the emotional rollercoaster of this grizzled warrior, now that his life of bloodshed was covered by the blood of the Lamb and he knew the Son of God!
Sunday Soundtrack The Old Rugged Cross By George Bennard
“In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, a wondrous beauty I see, for 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, to pardon and sanctify me.
DAY 23 | Matthew 27:45-56, Mark 15:33-41, Luke 23:44-49
Today’s Face of the Cross: High Priest in Temple when Curtain was Torn Definition: “Authorized to perform sacred religious rites as a mediatory agent between humans and God.”
Director’s Cut The veil was a long, woven curtain that was purple, scarlet and blue. This curtain or veil was for the purpose of separating the Most Holy Place, which held the Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy Seat.
I’m still trying to wrap my mind around how this could have happened and what this means! Clearly a man could not have torn the curtain. This curtain was 60 feet high, 4 inches thick, and was ripped from the top down. The only reasonable explanation is a supernatural one. If God truly did tear the curtain, then the implications of such an event are life-changing for every human being on earth. The curtain separated the Holy of Holies, God’s dwelling place, from the rest of the world. The Holy of Holies was off limits to everyone except for me, and it was off limits to me all but one day of the year. One man, one day of the year could be in the unmediated presence of God. If God tore the curtain, this must mean that this Presence is available to all. The glory that Moses cried out for has just flooded humanity, and every person, like priests, now has access to God Himself. If this is true, it will certainly change the world. – Anthony McLeod
Between the Lines Are you experiencing daily the presence of God?
Behind the Mask Why did God tear the curtain?
DAY 24 | Matthew 27:45-56
Today’s Faces of the Cross: Holy People Raised in Tombs Definition: “The act of rising from the dead or returning to life.”
Director’s Cut Darkness. Torchlight filters through my eyelashes as I blink within the dimly lit room. Where am I? The soft rumble of a distant shaking still vibrates through my senses. Dust and the taste of limestone engulf the air. My last thought before I closed my eyes was the glorious appearing of a heavenly throne. My sickness had prevented me from carrying out my priestly duties. Death was certain; of that I knew. But now…now, I hear the cries of soldiers and people as I lay in what appears to be a tomb once sealed and forgotten. Why would I be in a dead man’s tomb? And what’s this I hear about Jesus? I hear murmurings and cries as people rush by outside. Before sickness overcame my body, I can recall the news of a rising prophet with that same name who could preform miracles. Yet His beginnings were humble; a mere carpenter, in fact. I push past the rubble of what once sealed this dark tomb and peer out to utter chaos. The sky is eerie, cloaked in darkness, and I grab the nearest passerby who pulls away aghast by my presence. He cries out in fear as if he has seen the dead. How can this be? Was I dead? He points to the hill called Golgotha as he runs the opposite way. My eyes blur to focus on what appears to be three Roman crosses in the distance. I must find out what has happened. I must reach the temple. My feet, entangled by cloths, are quickly revived, and the rush of emotion and wonder invigorates my heart. What on earth has just happened? – jason gawel
Between the Lines How would you have responded to find someone you helped bury now alive?
Behind the Mask Could the fulfillment of Holy Scriptures be fulfilled through this man called Jesus? Was Simeon right in proclaiming the salvation of Israel?
Matthew is the only Gospel writer who records the incident of the raising of “holy people.” Those raised had followed God closely and bore witness to the effectiveness of Jesus’ sacrifice.
DAY 25 | Matthew 27:45-56, Luke 23:44-49, Mark 15:33-41
Today’s Face of the Cross: Centurion at the Cross Noun: “The commander of a century in the Roman army.”
Director’s Cut “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” were the last words I remember Him saying.
In ancient Rome the “centurion” meant “captain of 100,” and the Roman centurion was captain over 100 foot soldiers in a legion. The centurion was loyal and courageous, beginning as a soldier in the army and working their way up the ranks.
From far away, the crowd thought He was calling for one of their prophets, but I heard Him clearly. I don’t know how we missed the signs that this man was the Son of God. When we hung Him on the cross, the whole sun was blotted out. It was like midnight in the middle of the day. And I had heard of His miracles - everyone had heard of His miracles. Even in His last hour, He was holding to His innocence. Our eyes met a dozen times throughout the day. Something wasn’t right; He didn’t look like the others I had crucified. He wasn’t proud. He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t begging to be let go. He was still and quiet. He bore the Cross as if it were an honor to die. Like He knew something that the rest of us didn’t. He breathed His last. Then an earthquake. Surely this was a righteous man. Surely He was the Son of God. – Christian Merrell
Between the Lines How do we let our hearts harden in the presence of God?
Behind the Mask I regret following orders instead of doing what I knew was right.
DAY 26 | John 19:16-27
Today’s Face of the Cross: John Meaning: “Gracious Gift of God” (Greek)
Director’s Cut Think back! Can you recall a time when you were in the middle of a turning point event, and things were going so fast, but all you could do was watch? You held your breath, never dared to blink your eyes for fear of missing something important? I was thinking, “Pilate was good and considerate to Jesus, he did all he could to prevent the Master from the humility of crucifixion.” I knew Jesus would say no to Pilate’s offer, but Pilate could not have understood, no matter how much he wanted to. I now see Him hanging on the cross between those two hardcore criminals. A sign is being raised, “King of the Jews” written in all languages for all to see! Can’t these soldiers show some respect? Why would they further humiliate Jesus by tearing and dividing His clothes? “This is too much! I can’t take it anymore! I feel so helpless and powerless! What can I do, Jesus? How can I help?” You told us this would happen and that we should be prepared for it. Now that it is here, I feel dumbfounded and confused. Lord, it is so hard to watch You suffer. – rachel webb
Between the Lines Who will be there for you when you hurt?
Behind the Mask It is my joy to take care of my Savior’s mother.
John the Apostle was a son of Zebedee and Salome and the brother of James. According to tradition, John is the author of the Gospel of John, the Epistles and the Book of Revelation.
DAY 27 | John 19:16-27
Today’s Face of the Cross: Mary, the Mother of Jesus Meaning: “Sea of Bitterness” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut He saw me, through eyes blurred with blood, grime and pain. He saw me beside His cross. I had been told a sword would pierce my soul one day (Luke 2:35). This was the day. I had been the chalice that held Him in embryonic form. My Son. My Savior.
Mary was the mother of Jesus, who was conceived within her by the Holy Spirit when she was a virgin. She was married to the carpenter Joseph.
As with any mother, the memories are tattooed into the soft tissue of my heart. The three days we looked for Him after Passover and found Him in the temple. He reminded me He had to be occupied with His Father’s business. This cross was His Father’s business. And in the midst of all the pain, He tenderly put me into the keeping of John (John 19:27). The heart of a Son provided a home for me. The heart of the Savior died for me. And He resurrected and ascended so He could send His Spirit to indwell me. I had been indwelt by Him before ~ my womb feeding Him life. But now He would feed me life…and I would carry Him once more. – Daryl Fleming
Between the Lines Do you know He saw you from His cross, too, and provided for you?
Behind the Mask Mary heard the angel say, “This same Jesus will return.”
DAY 28 | Mark 15:33-47, Mark 16:1-8
Today’s Face of the Cross: Salome Meaning: “Peaceful” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut People will never believe me. After 3 years of listening to His teachings and watching the miracles, He suffered a tortured crucifixion because the crowd turned on Him. If people didn’t believe in Him while He was walking among us, performing the miracles, they certainly aren’t going to believe me. When I asked the Lord if my sons could be seated at His right and left hand in Heaven, He told me that I didn’t know what I was asking. He was right, of course. I didn’t understand it then, and I’m not sure I fully understand His answer to me now. He said to become great we had to serve. I remember when He looked at me and said that He did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many. It has been difficult to wrap my mind around this, and yet, He has performed another miracle today. If I leave here today and share what I’ve discovered, I fear people won’t believe me. – Kristy Elston
Between the Lines Are you afraid to believe the miracle God has for you?
Behind the Mask How do I carry out His message to others, without being afraid?
Salome was the mother of two apostles, James and John. She witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and was one of the women who discovered that the tomb was empty.
Sunday Soundtrack At Calvary

DAY 29 | Matthew 27:57-66, Mark 15:42-47, John 19:38-42
Today’s Face of the Cross: Joseph of Arimathea Meaning: “God Will Multiply” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut I am a rich man, part of the Jewish Sanhedrin, am in search of the kingdom of God, and have become a disciple of Jesus. When I learned of Jesus and His ministry, I recognized the prophecies of the Messiah. But, I was torn between what I was taught and what I witnessed with Jesus. When I learned of Jesus’ torture and death, I felt ashamed and questioned why I didn’t tell more people of Jesus and assist in His ministry. I knew what Jesus died for and regardless of the personal ramifications, I wanted to honor Jesus as the King He was. I made a request of Pilot to take Jesus’ body for burial and Nicodemus came alongside me. I knew my fellow Sanhedrin would question why I would do this, but I didn’t care what would happen to me. I knew Jesus was the Messiah, and that by believing in Him, we all would have eternal life. – john kiser
Between the Lines How more effective would Jesus’ ministry been if Joseph was more vocal about whom Jesus was?
Behind the Mask Joseph regrets not acting sooner to show his devotion to Jesus; don’t have the same regret.
Arimathea was a city located in the hills of Judea, particularly in northwest of Jerusalem. It was the birth-place of both Joseph and the prophet/ judge Samuel.
DAY 30 | John 3:1-15, John 7:45-52, John 19:16-42
Today’s Face of the Cross: Nicodemus Meaning: “Victory of the People” (Greek)
Director’s Cut
Nicodemus was the only member of the Sanhedrin, the supreme Jewish council and court, to speak in support of Jesus Christ
I cannot understand the narrow focus of my fellow Sanhedrin members. How can they not recognize Jesus as a teacher sent by God? I personally went to see Jesus and had a private conversation with Him. He said we must be born again! He then explained to me in detail what it is meant to be “Born Again.” Jesus said we are born again when the “Spirit gives birth to the spirit” (when we believe that Jesus is our Lord and Savior). After having the conversation and seeing all that I have seen of Jesus, I cannot believe that I am the only one of the Sanhedrin members that spoke in support of Jesus Christ. I argued in favor of Jesus prior to His crucifixion and then was with Joseph of Arimathea when he took Jesus’ body to his tomb and together we prepared Jesus’ body for burial. I cannot believe I was one of the last to be with Jesus prior to His resurrection. I am eternally grateful to God for the incredible experience I had because I was willing to listen to my conscience, (the prompting of God), ask questions and dig into something deeper without the support of my peers. “Born again” . . . takes on a whole new meaning! – LORRAINE DEMMEL
Between the Lines Boldness amongst peers . . . do I have what it takes?
Behind the Mask Not on my own, but certainly with the Holy Spirit’s leading and guidance.
DAY 31 | Matthew 27:45-28:10, Mark 15:33-16:8, Luke 24:1-12, John 19:17-27, John 20:1-18
Today’s Face of the Cross: Mary Magdalene Meaning: “Sea of Bitterness” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut The first one, I invited. The other six invited themselves, whispering dark promises and always daring me to step in deeper. And I did, until the thick, dark sweetness turned to bitter terror as each of the seven demons found a voice. There was no peace, no rest, only a constant shriek of horror, blasphemy and death... until Jesus stepped into my chaos and put the demons out. A quiet, so overwhelmingly beautiful, entered me, and He spoke my name: “Mary.” The quiet remained and also His voice. And then, too soon, He was gone. I stood outside a tomb on a cold morning holding burial ointments waiting to anoint His body, my final gift of gratitude and love, fully knowing I had witnessed the purchase of my freedom...His agony for my peace. But now His body was gone. No guards. Only a gardener... I thought. “Sir, If you have moved his body, please, tell me.” My eyes failed to recognize Him, but I knew His voice. “Mary.” Again my heart rested in His quiet presence. – JILL LAMKIN
Between the Lines Will you allow His voice to enter your chaos?
Behind the Mask His peace has more power than my turmoil.
Mary Magdalene, from whom seven demons were driven out, was a faithful follower of Jesus and the first to witness His resurrection.
DAY 32 | Matthew 27:57-61, Matthew 28:1-15
Today’s Face of the Cross: The “Other” Mary Definition: “Different from that or those implied or specified.”
Director’s Cut
One of the faithful followers of Jesus who helped provide for His needs, and was present at His crucifixion and a witness of His resurrection.
I am sitting here looking up at Jesus, nailed to a cross. He said He did this to pay the price for our sins. He has done this for us! My head is reeling, and I long for the quiet comfort of prayer’s embrace. I see forgiveness in His eyes, sorrow for those who are lost. I pray, “Father in heaven, bring your Son peace, release Him from His pain and anguish. Forgive us, Lord.” Words cannot express my grief; God, hear your servant Mary’s prayer. Trembling inside somehow I know the end is near. I am not fearful for the loss; I know He will return. I bow down at His feet in worship, my eyes filling with tears, my weeping not out of grief but love. He bore these stripes to save us. From His lips I hear “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” I sit for hours watching over Him till they come for Him. I watch as they roll the stone in front of His tomb. Walking home, my heart heavy and numb, doubts invade my thoughts. “Is this all real? Will Jesus rise from the dead?” Pleading to God, I turn my thoughts away from the flesh. For the next few days, as I meditate on your Word, recounting Jesus’s teachings, peace envelops me. On the third day after His crucifixion, Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb and sees the stone is rolled away, and an Angel is saying, “Don’t be afraid, Jesus has been raised from the dead…now go and tell the disciples.” We run, joy coursing through us. Suddenly, there in front of us, is Jesus! Falling to our knees, we worshipped Him. No words can describe the joy and love that is felt. He kept His word. – katheline monnier
Between the Lines Jesus gave His all for us, to save us. Isn’t it time we gave our all in following His teachings?
Behind the Mask We are given a promise of eternity in heaven with Him if we follow Him. He kept His word then. Are you ready for eternity?
DAY 33 | Luke 24:1-12
Today’s Face of the Cross: Joanna Meaning: “Gift of a Gracious God” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut My name is Joanna. Today, my friends and I went back to Jesus’ tomb to take care of His body. When we got there, we were horrified to find the stone rolled away. We ran inside, but Jesus was gone. Where was He? Who stole the body of my Lord? All of a sudden, two men appeared. I don’t know who they were. Their faces and garments were lit up; they had to be some sort of angel. At that moment, all I could do was bow before them. This is so crazy. Three days ago, my heart was crushed and broken when I saw my Lord hanging dead on the cross. At that moment, I felt like I died with Him and the promise of our salvation gone forever. But today, when the angels told me that He is alive, I felt like I was given a wonderful gift. You see, I’m not supposed to be here. My husband is Chuza, a steward of King Herod. Herod had already tried to kill Jesus once. If he found out I was here, he would kill Chuza, our children and me. I am so excited. I don’t know whom to tell first. I can’t stop the tears from flowing and all I want to do is dance. I’ve never danced before, but I can’t stand still. The other women and I are running back to town. I have to tell the disciples and everyone we see that Jesus is alive. He’s alive! – gladys cavener
Between the Lines Would you have taken the chance to be there?
Behind the Mask If I could have stopped Jesus death, I would have, but I’m so glad I didn’t.
Joanna was the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward. She was one of the women to whom Jesus appeared after his resurrection.
DAY 34 | Matthew 28:1-10
Today’s Face of the Cross: Angel Sitting on Stone at Tomb Definition: “Spiritual being that serves as a messenger from God or as a guardian of human beings.”
Director’s Cut In Hebrew, the word “mal’ak” is a defining term for Angels, meaning “messengers.”
I can still remember the faces of the guards! I scared them half to death – most of them fainted. I had been told that the Romans were supposed to be fearless. All I did was show up and BAM! They were out cold. Imagine what would have happened if they had seen my Boss. If they were afraid of me, an angel, I can only imagine their response to a “dead man” walking out of His tomb. My boss is the most humble man I know. He let Himself be crucified so that His friends could spend eternity with us. He assigned me the job of rolling the stone away for Him. It’s a mystery really. He could have just told the stone to move and it would have listened. Whatever His reasoning, I was glad to be the first to watch Him rise! He had me wait for His friends, “the Marys.” Boy, you should have seen their eyes when they saw the tomb open and empty! – Christian S. Merrell
Between the Lines Why did Jesus have an angel open the tomb?
Behind the Mask It was an honor to be the first to the risen Savior!
Sunday Soundtrack Glorious Day
By Casting Crowns “One day the grave could conceal Him no longer One day the stone rolled away from the door Then He arose, over death He had conquered Now He’s ascended, my Lord evermore Death could not hold Him, the grave could not keep Him From rising again”
DAY 35 | Matthew 28:1-20, Mark 16:9-19, Luke 24:13-53, John 20:1-31
Today’s Face of the Cross: Resurrected Jesus Meaning: “Savior, God is My Salvation” (Greek) | “Jehovah is My Salvation” (Hebrew)
Director’s Cut To my beloved bride – the Church – I address first:
Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised on the third day, and appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve, then to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time! - Paul
You who regularly attend and have seen these very church walls saturated with my Words. Why do you still sit stony-faced and hard of heart, refusing to trust and believe in me? Am I just another god made of stone or wood, lifeless to the prodding of your fingers? See, they go through my pierced hands; I am no phantom or ghost. Loved one, if you accept me - your risen Savior - into your heart, the riches of my grace you inherit will overwhelm you. Oh! won’t you believe, won’t you? Secondly, to you who have accepted Me into your heart; purposefully examine your heart and see if you read my Word simply as a duty to cross-off your daily list. My sweet, gentle Spirit can guide you into remarkable understanding on how to apply my truths to your life. My Word gives life, loved one – for I am no longer dead; it gives refreshment to your tired soul, it invigorates and empowers you to spread my Word to others – bringing hope to them. Shouldn’t it create a “burning in your heart” as I speak to you from its pages? – PREM WILLIAMS
Between the Lines How often do you spend time in my Word?
Behind the Mask From eternity to eternity it was planned that I will arise.
DAY 36 | Matthew 27:62-65, Matthew 28:11-15
Today’s Faces of the Cross: Soldiers at Jesus’ Tomb Definition: “Soldier: one engaged in military service, especially the army.”
Director’s Cut We are soldiers - dedicated and disciplined - obedient to a fault. We were sent to guard the tomb of the slain Nazarene from potential abduction by His zealous followers, and later stunned into silence at the sight of the risen Savior. When we reported what we’d seen, we were bribed by devious religious leaders to lie about what we knew to be truth. While we were trained to be courageous in the face of danger, standing in the presence of Jesus in His resurrected splendor, we were terrified to our core. Perhaps it was the realization that Jesus was indeed the Son of God that caused us to shake for fear; knowing that we had played a part in His crucifixion that left us like dead men. Our training did not prepare us for that moment of revelation. Standing in the presence of the Christ, with His countenance like lightening and His clothes as white as snow, should have turned us into faithful followers rather than cowardly conspirators who eventually rewrote our account at the tomb for some hush money. If only we had chosen the high road of truth and courage! – JENNIFER DAVIS
Between the Lines How has fearing man influenced you to take the low road?
Behind the Mask We felt fear and later chose cowardice and deception.
Roman soldiers were well known for their dedication and discipline. Obedient to following orders, it was accepted that failure to complete an order could result in their own execution.
DAY 37 | Luke 24:13-35
Today’s Face of the Cross: Cleopas Meaning: “Fame of His Father”
Director’s Cut After His resurrection, Jesus met my companion and I as we traveled from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Our hearts burned deep within us when He opened the Scriptures to better enable us to understand why He suffered. Why did Jesus choose to explain His suffering first? Because of the importance of knowing that our sins were placed upon Him and the punishment that we were supposed to receive the Father placed on Him.
Cleopas was one of two disciples to whom Jesus Christ appeared to, on the road between the towns of Jerusalem and Emmaus after his resurrection.
Jesus’ sacrifice provides forgiveness of sins and reconciliation to God. We now truly understand that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus! – John Soundrakumar
Between the Lines Do you know that because Jesus suffered, we can receive God’s blessings?
Behind the Mask I know that Jesus is the Messiah!
DAY 38 | Matthew 28:1-20, Mark 16:1-19, Luke 24:36-53, John 20:11-23
Today’s Face of the Cross: James the Greater Meaning: “Supplanter” (Greek)
Director’s Cut We kept telling him, “We’ve seen our Lord!” But Thomas wouldn’t believe us. How could I blame him? I could scarcely bring myself to believe it. While I was overjoyed to see Jesus, at first I was simply…stunned. How was this possible? He was brutally killed and laid in a tomb three days ago! But why? Why was I so surprised that He was alive? I watched Him cure every type of illness and drive out legions of demons. I saw Him walk on water, calm a storm and feed thousands. I saw Him raise Lazarus from the dead! And the little girl! And the widow’s son! I was there when He revealed His true nature…when He spoke with Moses and Elijah. I heard the voice of God say that Jesus was His son! Why then, was I so surprised that death didn’t defeat Him? He even told us He would die and rise. Why didn’t I expect this? How small is my faith and how big is my God! – roger roy
Between the Lines Do we expect too little of our God?
Behind the Mask Lord I believe, help me with my unbelief.
James the Greater was one of the twelve apostles. He was a son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother of the apostle John. He witnessed the transfiguration of Jesus, as well as the agony of Christ.
DAY 39 | John 20:24-29
Today’s Face of the Cross: Thomas Meaning: “Twin” (Aramaic)
Director’s Cut
Thomas was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus who was also called “Didymus.”
I walked with Christ for most of His ministry, saw the signs and wonders, and showed my dedication and courage by asking to follow Him back to Judea, even though I knew it could be fatal. At the last supper, I was confused when Jesus said He was going away to prepare a place for us and asked, “How will we find you if we don’t know the way?” After so much teaching, I know He must have wondered if anyone would know the way, especially if we disciples didn’t. In our walk with Jesus, we tend to forget on occasion what He taught us. We overlook the teaching we know so well. When adversity comes knocking, we tend to lean on our own understanding and not lean on Jesus. I needed to touch the scarred body of Jesus to come back to my senses. Jesus told us that, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” – DENNIS & MARY ACKLEY
Between the Lines Do you need to touch Jesus to renew your faith?
Behind the Mask Thomas was martyred in 72 AD when preaching the message in India that His Master had brought to our world.
DAY 40 | Romans 3:21-31, Romans 6:15-23, Romans 10:5-13
Today’s Face of the Cross: You and I (Mankind) Definition: “The human race: the totality of human beings.”
Director’s Cut Life is so full of choices and there are so many challenges each day. It is easy to feel beat up and alone, and I have felt that way from time to time. My sinful nature keeps me humble and on my knees. Our Heavenly Father knew our struggles with sin and unrighteousness and gave to all of mankind the greatest gift possible. The gift was His Son, Jesus who sacrificed His life on the Cross. Jesus was beaten and shed His blood that we might be forgiven and righteous before God. Christ’s work at the Cross enables all believers to be forgiven of their sins, and by faith, enjoy the gift of Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. I am no longer a slave to sin and death, but I am set free and now a child of God. My future is bright and secure. I will spend eternity with my RISEN Lord and Savior! – DON DICKINSON
Between the Lines Have you chosen to accept the sacrifice made on your behalf by the risen Savior?
Behind the Mask I understand how much God loves me by the events of Calvary.
God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to end all God’s anger against us. He used Christ’s blood and our faith as the means of saving us from His wrath.
