JoannaPascale
A singer of sophisticated taste, profound expressiveness, and raw emotion...
Montgomery County’s third annual Montco Jazz Fest is returning this fall! Happening from September 19th-22nd, this year’s theme is Legacy, and celebrates the living legacy of jazz by enjoying artist collaborations and tribute concerts to some of the great legends in the genre.
Montco is thrilled to welcome back international recording and touring artist Joanna Pascale as this year’s festival curator for Montco Jazz Fest. She was an integral part of 2023’s Jazz Fest focusing on Women in Jazz, and this year, she’s helping us shape a momentous celebration spotlighting legacy and generations in jazz. Performances will be happening all throughout the county this fall.
Lyrics are paramount for Philadelphia-based vocalist Joanna Pascale, who insists that she simply cannot perform a song unless she can connect personally with its lyrics. But once she’s found that connection, which she fortunately
has with hundreds of songs from the Great American Songbook and beyond, there’s no one who can better convey the emotion of those words more directly and intimately than Pascale. That gift is in ample evidence on Pascale’s latest release, Wildflower, on which she’s joined by an all-star ensemble including pianists Orrin Evans and Cyrus Chestnut, harmonica master Gregoire Maret, bassists Christian McBride, Vicente Archer, and Luques Curtis, drummers Donald Edwards and Obed Calvaire, guitarists Kurt Rosenwinkel and Tim Motzer, and neo-soul singer Bilal. The recording of Wildflower coincided with the end of Pascale’s decade-long engagement at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, which allowed her to hone her voice, style, and vast repertoire.
A singer of sophisticated taste, profound expressiveness, and raw emotion, Pascale is also a gifted educator who is a member of the vocal faculty at both Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. She is featured on trumpeter Jeremy Pelt’s Soul,
saxophonist Tim Warfield’s Jazzy Christmas; Orrin Evans’ Liberation Blues, recorded live at New York City’s Smoke Jazz Club; Philly sax legend Larry McKenna’s From All Sides; Temple University Jazz Band’s Thad Jones tribute album To Thad With Love; and That Music Always Round Me, a setting of Walt Whitman’s poetry by Garry Dial and Dick Oatts. Pascale attended Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts and Temple University, where she is now a member of the faculty and has been featured on two of the university’s CD releases.
She made her recording debut with 2004’s When Lights Are Low, followed by the 2008 CD Through My Eyes and a 2010 duo recording with pianist Anthony Wonsey that focused on Songbook standards. With the 2015 release of Wildflower, she revealed her most personal and diverse collection to date, aptly named for allowing her talents to finally come into full bloom, a wildflower’s beauty emerging into the sunlight.

61st Philadelphia Folk Festival
Vibrant music and cultural celebration.
After a 1-year hiatus, the Philadelphia Folk Festival returned to Montgomery County this past August! Old fans experienced the same vibrant energy and culture that the festival was known for, with some notable new additions as well. During their year off, the Philadelphia Folk Society and their Board of Directors restructured and redefined the event that so many fans missed in 2023, whilst still preserving the rich history and culture that the festival is known for. This year’s event served nearly 5,000 attendees daily with several music stages, educational workshops, crafts, and on-site camping. Those who chose to camp overnight at the festival were provided with an experience where attendees can connect
with fellow music enthusiasts. All of this occurred amidst the natural beauty of Old Pool Farm, which provided ample space and a vibrant landscape that generated an energetic atmosphere. In years past, the campgrounds buzzed with impromptu jam sessions, education on writing folk and dance music, and giving fans the privilege of interacting with many of the performing artists on stage. Families were able to enjoy kid-friendly activities as well, driving home the organization’s mission to produce timeless events that will be remembered for a lifetime. The Philadelphia Folk Festival, presented by the Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS), is one of the most celebrated and respected folk music events
in the entire United States. And after one year off, PFS and fans were beyond excited to welcome this event and its musicians back for another amazing festival. This event aims to preserve the rich history of folk music, as well as bring in new talent from across the United States. This year’s lineup of musicians showcased a rich tapestry of musical genres within the folk tradition. Returning artists such as Craig Bickhardt, Calvin Arsenia, and Adam Ezra Group, along with new artists like Last Chance and Meghan Cary created one of the most rich and diverse folk festivals to date, all headlined by the iconic Philadelphia native John Oates. This annual festival occurs every third weekend in August, so keep an eye out for next year’s Folk Fest!
