President Alonso Lopez: There are many perks to being a president in Key Club. Some of the perks are that as a president you are deeply more involved in Key Club affairs and are able to have a greater influence on the key club experience of the members. As a president, many responsibilities fall on me, but it makes me feel better knowing that doing my job earns me the respect of my peers and allows me to meet many new people. One of my favorite perks is that I can have more power in decisions and how the club can help out the community. I get to find and help in service events. I also love being able to help the community more and inspiring people to become a better person, or inspiring them to want to be like me and help the community. These are the best things about my position as president.
Vice President A Jonathan Ta:
I haven’t been 1st vice president for long now, but so far, I’ve really enjoyed it, and the best part of it is that I get the opportunity to help lead such a great group of students who really care about serving our club and our community. I have always taken pride in knowing that the members of our club really work hard to help others and always have fun doing it, but now I am able to play an even larger part in ensuring that that aspect of our club never changes. I still remember looking at and being inspired by all of the exciting leaders of Valley Key Club from my freshman year, and now I have the honor of inspiring a new generation of Key Clubbers. Being able to have a role in improving and leading such a wonderful club to better serve others and have an amazing time is my favorite part of being our 1st vice president.
Secretary Lindy Do:
It has been a couple months into my term and I have grown accustomed to the responsibilities of my position. Being a secretary requires being organized and having time-management. Being a secretary is more than just completing an MRF every month, taking meeting minutes, and recording hours. However, the best part about being a secretary is being able to communicate with members and in turn help them become more active in Key Club events. Having a board position gives me a sense of leadership and using it, I can help out members and direct them to wherever they need to be. In addition, filling out MRFs and keeping track of hours isn't just another task for me, but it is something that I take time and effort into completing. When it isn't being procrastinated, doing MRFs isn't actually all that bad. It makes me feel as if my job is vital to keeping our Key Club running. Being a secretary is a tough job to do, but taking the challenge of this position will help me grow as a leader and as a person in general.
Treasurer Joe Aquino: The best thing about my job as treasurer of Valley High School’s Key Club is that I get to engage in conversation with everyone. As the treasurer, members turn in their fees and donations to me. Talking to the members individually allows me to get to know each member better, and it helps me understand who they are and what they like. I believe that if I get to know every member, there will be a stronger sense of unity in the club. I have to say though; the second best thing about my job is that I get to be on the board with my friends. I feel that we have all worked so hard in Key Club that we managed to reach our positions as board members. If known most of the board since my freshman year and I have to say we’ve come a long way. Being in Key Club with my friends and my fellow members makes it all the better.
SPOTLIGHT Service
Service is what you make out of it.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” -Mahatma Gandhi Left: President Alonso stands in the projector spotlight as Technology Editor Karl Catarata pulls up the hanging projector screen.
Sometimes, as high school teens, we easily get bored at prolonged events. We might start getting off task, or start talking to a friend in the middle of a presentation. We might even feel a bit tired or annoyed by even being there. We must remember, that as Key Clubbers, service is what we make out of it. Key clubbers are the leaders who create positive and energetic environments at most service events. That’s what we’re known for.
Bored at a service event? Look for ways that you can create a more entertaining, and positive environment, all within the respective boundaries of the event guidelines of course. Service is what we make out of it, so let’s make it positive and great. - Technology Editor, Karl Catarata
