appointment time so as not to miss the call. When you phone to make an appointment, please give the receptionist as much detail as you feel you are able to. It really helps us to judge the urgency of the appointment and ensures we get the correct clinician for your problem. Let us take this opportunity to introduce our new team member, Clare Rushton, who has joined us as a First Contact Physiotherapist. Clare is an extremely experienced physio who will be the first (and best) point of contact for musculoskeletal problems, for example, all soft tissue injuries, sprain, strains and sports injuries; arthritis; muscular, tendon or ligament problems including carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow; any spinal or neck problems; spinal related pains in arms or legs including nerve symptoms, pins and needles etc. Clare will be a huge asset to the team and will be working with us on Wednesdays. We completely understand there are many of you still waiting to receive an invitation for your first Covid vaccination. Please understand invitations are subject to availability and distribution of the vaccines from NHS England. We will be inviting everyone in due course. If you would like more information, please see our website or Facebook page. Please don’t contact the surgery as we will be unable to give you an exact date for your vaccine. Again, please treat the team with respect - we may take a little longer to answer the phone; your prescription delivery may be a little slower, and you may have to wait a little longer for that routine appointment. As a team we strive to continue to provide you with the standards that you have been used to pre-Covid, and whilst we are eager for the vaccination programme to be rolled out, this on top of our normal daily work has led to increased work pressures. Final note of thanks… It has been great to see so many of you at the vaccination clinic. We have had a massive uptake from our patients - well above the national average. So, thank you to you all – it is a huge step in controlling and defeating this virus and allowing us some return to normality. Your health and the provision of care we supply is paramount in our daily planning. So please, remember that we are open. Don’t put off ringing or coming to see us – if you think it is important, then it is, so pick up the phone and call us. But please bear with us; we are all trying our best in difficult and challenging circumstances. We thank you for your continued patience and co-operation in these matters. Dr Longley, Dr Rees and Dr Dean Get out in Nature Monday 26th April to Sunday 2nd May is National Gardening Week. It’s proven that plants and gardening have a positive effect on our mental health and happiness. For tips, info and how you can get involved in the country’s biggest annual celebration of gardening, see the Royal Horticultural Society website www.rhs.org.uk/get-involved/nationalgardening-week And if you don’t have a garden or any indoor plants, remember to pause and appreciate the natural world around you when you take your daily exercise. Whatever you do, take some time this April to appreciate being outside in our beautiful countryside and allow nature to work its wonders! Latest News Please can we encourage patients to follow our Facebook page @miltonabbassurgery and check our surgery website, for the latest surgery news and updates on the Covid vaccination clinics.

Editorial There is very little locally to report this month and we have decided to keep the editorial very simple as a result – it is all about COVID and the ‘roadmap out of lockdown’ that is occupying everyone’s thoughts! As everything remains so uncertain we felt it was better not to speculate much… however… Provided the plans come to fruition and there are no more surprises in store, we hope that we may be able to return to a printed edition of the magazine with the July issue. This has to be subject to myriad provisos of course! If we are able to do this, it would be helpful if we were to receive articles, adverts and photographs to include; it would be a shame if we were to go to print and end up with a magazine comprising mainly of professional adverts! There is still a long time to go before we make a final decision about this, but it might be time to start dreaming again of a return to ‘normality’. When we do so, we shall of course need to resume our normal arrangements for advertising, and all those whose adverts have been included in our online version will need to remember that the subscription will start running again. We look forward to resuming our role to help inform and unite the local community. Have a Happy Easter! The Valley News Team

Milton Abbas Surgery A Letter from the Partners: We wanted to take a moment to update you all on the effects COVID has had, and continues to have, on the way we deliver healthcare to you all. How has COVID affected the Surgery? Firstly, this is an incredibly difficult time for us all. We understand everyone is feeling the stress, worry, anxiety and fear associated with this brutal illness and we’d like to remind our patients that the staff at the surgery of course feel the same way. We all have families and loved ones who, like you, we haven’t seen or hugged for months. We all have the same fears and concerns for ourselves and our loved ones, and in some areas, these are heightened by the increased risk associated with our roles. Please be respectful to our team, who are working incredibly hard in difficult circumstances; there really is no excuse for rudeness at a time when we should all be pulling together. As we are sure you are all aware, we are part of The Mid Dorset Primary Care Network. There are 9 surgeries in the Network from the local area, who have united to provide a Covid Vaccination service from The Atrium Health Centre in Dorchester. These clinics are run on the good will of the teams from all 9 practices, including Milton Abbas, who are working additional hours during the evenings, weekdays and at the weekends, on top of their normal working weeks. Did you know the surgeries are only given approximately 1 weeks notification of a vaccine delivery - sometimes less? In that short space of time between notification and the delivery of the vaccines, the clinics must be set up, a staff rota created for volunteers from the practices, patients invited, contingency plans agreed - it is a huge undertaking, all in addition to the running of our practices. How can we work together to make life easier for everyone? Due to Covid-19 we are having to telephone triage all GP appointments and the reception team will only be able to book a telephone appointment to speak with a doctor. These telephone appointments are booked into timed slots on our clinical system - the reception team can’t just ask the GPs to give you a quick ring, each consultation involves looking at past history and must be documented, which takes time. Urgent appointments will of course continue to be ‘same day’ as always, but please be aware that telephone appointments may not exactly run to time. For urgent appointments, there is NO choice of GP, it will simply be whoever is doing the urgent clinic - if your appointment is truly urgent for that day you must be prepared to see any of our GPs. Though you will be given an approximate time for your telephone appointment, the clinicians may not be able to contact you at the exact time, depending on how their clinics are running, and therefore we ask you make sure you have your phone close to hand around the

The Blandford Group Practice We would like to make our patients aware that in the coming few weeks, starting next week, the Surgery is going to be under immense pressure to carry on day to day care of our patients as well as rolling out vaccine clinics to our most vulnerable patients. With this in mind, we are asking that our patients only contact us for Urgent issues. For anything non-Urgent, please contact us from mid-April.

Winterborne & Milton Abbas Benefice What does Easter mean to you? I was asked….. Well, it’s not as big a festival as Christmas, is it? the person said….. Certainly, we do not have all the commercial hype that surrounds Christmas, or do we? You can now buy Hot Cross Buns and Cream eggs all year round and Easter Eggs went on sale at least 2 months ago…. 2

Brought up above the Baker’s Shop my Dad owned, I was ten years old the first year I helped My grandmother served customers Hot Cross Buns on Good Friday morning. That was all we served, and the shop was only open from 10am until 12 noon. They were very special buns, and I would stand and watch my Dad place the little metal crosses on each individual bun before they went in the coal ovens. When I was old enough to do it I tried so, so hard to ensure each cross was straight. But I was never allowed to handle them when the buns came out of the oven. My Dad’s poor hands would be covered in burns for weeks from those metal crosses. Now they have a machine that pipes flour and water in the shape of a cross, but it’s not the same! These days the shops do not shut for Good Friday, the three hour Easter Vigil is not observed by many churches, and somehow having those buns available all year has stopped some of the excitement and enjoyment. I wonder just how many people now realise and recognise that they signify the Cross of Jesus. So, what does Good Friday mean to most folks? My first Good Friday in our old village someone leant over the garden hedge as I was hanging out the washing and told me I should never wash clothes on Good Friday. That was a new one on me, but I have never forgotten the message. Our Churches will hold very special services every day throughout Holy Week, culminating on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Before I retired as a minister I would hold a Dawn Service and bonfire in the Church Yard on Easter Morning where we would light the Paschal candle and bring the light of Christ back into Church. This year our Rector will be holding just such a service at 6am in Houghton Churchyard as dawn breaks. At funeral services, I can with utter conviction tell the folks that death is not the end. That we will meet again. That death only separates us because we do not understand and cannot see. I regard this knowledge and certainty as a gift received and one that I can pass on to others and hope that the message will bring them as much comfort as it has brought me. This is the EASTER MESSAGE. Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross, dying for each one of us and then His resurrection on Easter Morn, showing that death is not the end. Teaching us that all our sins are forgiven through His sacrifice and that we will have a place with Him in the Father’s house. Roger Jones wrote a musical play called “Mary Magdalene”. I had the honour once of singing the role of Mary and one of the songs remains with me to this day with words that can help in so many ways. This is the EASTER MESSAGE. “No one ever cared for me, those I met just brought me fear. ‘Till that day he came to me, and I felt his presence near. But when he spoke I knew my fear was gone, no more I’d have to hide. He spoke, I knew my fear was gone, the moment he came by my side. He, he taught me how to love when he stood there close at hand. Then he told how great his love, still I did not understand. But when he spoke I knew my fear was gone, no more I’d have to hide! He spoke! I only knew my fear was gone, the moment he came by my side!” Mary met Jesus in the garden on Easter Morning, HE WAS ALIVE. HAPPY EASTER and Every Blessing, Sue Litchfield

Worried About Getting Hacked? Over 15,000 hacked email and social media accounts reported in one year. If a hacker got into your email or social media account, what would they find? Health and banking information? Names and contact details for your friends and family? Private photos and messages? For most people, it’s at least one of those. Your email and social media accounts contain a wealth of personal information about you, which makes them a lucrative target for cyber criminals. Between February 2020 and February 2021, Action Fraud received 15,214 reports about email and social media account hacking. The majority of reports (88%) were made by individuals, with 12% of reports being made by businesses. Analysis of the crime reports revealed that Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat were the most affected social media accounts, with phishing messages being the most common tactic used by cyber criminals to lure unsuspecting victims. The motivations behind the hacks are varied and can range from financial gain, to revenge or personal amusement. Some victims are extorted for money, whilst others have their accounts used to send malicious links to their contacts. One victim who had multiple email and social media accounts hacked paid over £2,000 to regain access to them. Another victim reported that her hacked Facebook account was used to trick her friends into sending money into a PayPal account they thought belonged to her. Secure your email and social media accounts in just a few minutes. Here's what you need to do: 1: Use a strong and separate password for your email, as well as other important accounts, such as your banking or social media accounts. 2: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA). It will help to stop hackers from getting into your accounts, even if they have your password. 3: If you can't access your account, search the company's online support or help pages. You'll find info about how to recover your account. For detailed instructions on how to reset your password or enable 2FA, visit www.actionfraud.police.uk/secureyouraccounts
