Helping to inform and unite the Community
can’t carry a note in a bucket. You’re welcome here if you’re just browsing, just woke up or just got out of jail. We don’t care if you’re more Christian than the Archbishop of Canterbury, or haven’t been in church since little Annie’s baptism. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome tired parents, devoted grandparents and god-parents, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, and junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted, and those who have come a long way from what they once were but know they still have a way-to-go. We welcome you if you’re having problems or you’re down in the dumps or if you don’t like 'organised religion', we’ve been there too! If you blew all your offering money at the dog track, you're welcome here. If you made your fortune on the stock market, you are too. We offer a special welcome to those who think the earth is flat, work too hard, don’t work or are here because Gran wanted to go to church. Today we welcome those with hi-speed broadband, those whose connection is just about holding up, those joining us on Zoom, the phone, Facebook or DVD. We welcome those who are inked, pierced or both. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down your throat as a kid or got lost and wound up here by mistake. We welcome tourists, seekers and doubters, bleeding hearts … and you!” Our services now follow a slightly different pattern as we begin to use our buildings more regularly. Do keep a check on our website https://wvmabenefice.uk or follow us on Facebook (churches in the Winterborne Valley and Milton Abbas). With prayers for all who live in this area. Rev’d Lewis Pearson Rector of the Winterborne Valley and Milton Abbas Benefice revlewispearson@gmail.com 01258 880482
Editorial As we begin to prepare for our return to a printed edition of Valley News in July, it seems appropriate to reflect on the reliance we place on our advertisers. We realise that they place their adverts in a magazine that reaches about 1100 homes in our community so they know that their products and services are potentially read by even more people than that, but by paying for an advert, they are also supporting us in our endeavour to “help inform and unite the Community.” We are able to produce the magazine and deliver it free because of these advertisers, and we are grateful to each and every one. We also rely of course on the volunteers who produce the magazine and deliver it. We look forward to renewing our monthly contact with these volunteers. Those of us who work on the Valley News ‘Team’ are all volunteers, and one of those people – Anne Donnelly – will be moving to Devon with her husband Nick when they have sold their house. Anne is responsible for the adverts as ‘advertising manager’ – a grand title for someone who gets no payment! We are going to feel her absence keenly; she has been a loyal team member since our early days and has been consistently supportive with her efforts to maintain a steady ‘supply’ of advertisers, talking them through the process and the cost of placing adverts with us. We are going to have to replace Anne and need someone to come and join our team to carry on her excellent work. If you might be interested in doing this job – as a volunteer it must be stressed! – we’d love to hear from you. Anne would be very happy to have a chat with anyone who might contemplate this, with absolutely no obligation, so that you might get a better idea of what is entailed and how much time commitment is involved. Anne has always been an active member of our community in very many different ways, and this opportunity to take over from her would give someone the chance to actively support everyone in this way. It goes without saying that Anne is going to be sorely missed when she leaves. Her involvement in so many different aspects of valley life mean that there will be a host of people who will miss her, and Nick too. Although a little early as there is no leaving date as yet, we wouldn’t want to miss this opportunity to publicly thank her for all she has done for us here on the Valley News Team, and to wish both her and Nick every happiness in their new life in Devon. We have been publishing the magazine online during these ‘pandemic’ months, and have done so despite there being very few contributions from the community – for understandable reasons, of course. However, we need to be prepared to resume and so will need your support with adverts, articles and reports, photographs and other general contributions that help to make the magazine an enjoyable as well as informative read. We will need to have all these contributions by June 15th (adverts by June 10th) as we then get the magazine ready for our printers, Purley Print, to give them a chance to get it printed and back to us ready for delivery before the first of July. So, it’s time to get your thinking caps back on after a long pause! We look forward to hearing from you. We are all so looking forward to a return to (more) normal! There will of course be another online version of the magazine produced for June – usual deadlines also apply for this month, too. The Valley News Team
Milton Abbas Surgery Covid Vaccinations As you are aware, we are working with the other eight surgeries in our Primary Care Network to deliver covid vaccinations to our eligible population. As I write (early April) we are beginning the second doses on the vaccination for our older population, which we are continuing to deliver collaboratively from the Atrium Health Centre. There has been a pause in first vaccinations for patients under 50 but we are hopeful that these will continue once further supplies of vaccinations become available. If you are invited to attend for a vaccination, either at the Atrium or another centre please take up the offer and have your vaccination. If you have booked but are unable to attend, please cancel your appointment so that another patient can be invited. Did you know that May is National Walking Month? Walking is a fantastic way to keep active and maintain a healthy heart. I am sure that some of you discovered the benefits of a daily walk during the past year for your physical and mental wellbeing. Don’t let those good habits that you have developed disappear. Instead why not organise your own walk this May and raise money for the British Heart Foundation and its life saving research? See www.bhf.org.uk/how-youcan-help/fundraise for more ideas. Or perhaps now you have mastered the habit of going for a walk, you would like to challenge yourself? Why not take a look at the NHS running plan for beginners - Couch to 5K. See www.nhs.uk/livewell/exercise to download the weekly programmes. Whatever you end up doing this May, let’s keep on moving forward. Do something today that your future self will thank you for! Diabetes awareness Diabetes is a significant cause of ill health in the UK. One in ten people over the age of 40 in the UK are now living with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. Incredibly, more than half of all cases of Type 2 Diabetes could be delayed or prevented. Minor lifestyle changes can make a significant difference to your risks. What steps can you take to reduce your risk? If your risk score shows you as being of high risk for diabetes, please make an appointment with one of our nurses.
Winterborne Valley & Milton Abbas Benefice I once encountered a notice on a church door in the Welsh Valleys. Now these types of signs are not always the most interesting, they are often there to give information about when the next service takes place, or more likely some kind of legal policy. This one was different! It was a sign that spoke of a radical welcome to all who may come into contact with that place. The Church hasn’t and isn’t always good at being welcoming…but my hope is that as churches in the Winterborne Valley and Milton Abbas we will extend this kind of welcome. We might not always get it right but we are trying. I have adapted the sign a little for us and for these times. “We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, gay, straight, filthy rich, dirt poor or just about average. We especially welcome those who are crying new-borns, energetic toddlers, hyperactive grannies and everything in between. We welcome you if you can sing like Pavarotti or like the Rector 2

If you’ve received an invitation for a health check because you or someone you care for has a learning disability, please make sure you attend so we can check your general health and make sure you’re feeling well. If you think you should be on our register but aren’t sure if you are, just give us a call and we’ll have a look for you. www.nhs.uk/conditions/learning-disabilities/annual-health-checks Surgery Opening Hours The surgery will be closed on Saturday 1st May 2021 and Monday 3rd May 2021 for Early Spring Bank Holiday and Saturday 29th May 2021 and Monday 31st May 2021 for Spring Bank Holiday, so to please be aware of this when ordering and collecting medications.
The Blandford Group Practice The Blandford Group Practice will not be undertaking any further first dose covid vaccinations to patients aged 49 years and under. If you have not yet had your first dose vaccine, please do not contact the surgery. When you are eligible, NHS England will send you a letter asking you to book via the national booking service at an available vaccination site. Providing vaccinations impacts on the practice’s capacity to do ‘the day job’. We have decided that now the time is right to re-focus on our core services. Any patients who have received their first dose at practice will receive their second dose from the practice and we will contact you to advise you of your appointment date.
Hello from Corfe Mullen Hallo everyone - I do hope you are all well, and hoping to be able to do more with the restrictions being lifted soon. Life here in Corfe Mullen has been quiet, and for me, the last month has been painful and very frustrating. I somehow managed to pull a muscle or tendon in my right leg while climbing up in our Landrover and couldn't walk. It meant I couldn't do the shopping, walk the dogs,or even look after my lovely old pony Skye. Des did all the chores and a friend looked after Skye. After a bad winter with arthritic ankles, I came to realise that I really couldn't look after Skye properly, and he is going to the Margaret Green animal sanctuary near Corfe Castle. Has anyone been to visit there? It is such a lovely place and the staff are so loving and caring that I know Skye will be well looked after. But for me - well it’s the end of a lifetime (65 years- I had my first pony when I was only 10) of looking after, riding and loving ponies! Skye is 28 now so he will see out his days in a beautiful place. So much sadness, tears and frustration have been my "lot" just recently. So I send my love to everyone, and hope that my next letter will be more cheerful! God Bless you all. Heather Sims.

Rural Crime Signage Dorset Police Rural Crime Team has just received a new delivery of livestock worrying signs which are available for free to farmers, smallholders and horse owners to help protect livestock from worrying and attacks. We also have Farm and Horse watch signs available which will help to prevent rural crime. We recommend with farm and horse watch signs that they are mounted onto ply board to help them last longer and prevent their removal. To request signs please send an email to ruralcrimeteam@dorset.pnn.police.uk with your name, address and the signage and quantity required. Signs are limited to a maximum of 5 signs per address. Signs will be sent out to you via post.
Turnworth Pop-up Event Turnworth are organising a pop-up event in St Mary’s churchyard on Sat 29th & Sun 30th May to raise funds for church maintenance. As usual, they’ll be selling great Plants & Produce (jams, chutneys etc) & hope also to offer some cakes & a take-away cuppa. Opening times will be 11–5 each day. Final event decisions will naturally be determined by the status of lockdown; meanwhile do please mark your calendars. And if you have any plants or produce contributions, do please contact Sarah Heald beforehand on 01258 450326.
