its annual report to investor members the council shared numerous accomplishments that are having a positive impact on the economy of Rio Grande County. Commenting at the Feb. 18 Monte Vista City Council meeting City Manager Forrest Neuerburg said, “Clearly the report just scratches the surface of all the work that has taken place over the past year and is ongoing.” URGEDC and its co-directors Marty and Bonnie Asplin have definitely been busy building business relationships, partnerships and recruiting new business to the area. A notable event hosted by URGEDC this year was a two-day Economic Development Summit held at Monte Vista City Hall. The summit attracted elected officials and private individuals from Rio Grande County, Monte Vista, Del Norte and South Fork hoping to help improve economic conditions. The summit resulted in good networking and partnerships between the four government organizations. As a result, monthly meetings are held between the managers and administrators of each entity. The summit also produced a code of ethics between the governments. The code of ethics establishes the goal of promoting the western San Luis Valley before each town promotes themselves individually. Frank Gray, president of the Castle Rock Economic Development Council, was the guest speaker at this event and provided the idea for a code of ethics based on a model from the

Denver-Metro area. URGEDC has also had a significant hand in the development of new business in Rio Grande County. Some notable projects URGEDC helped to work on or is working on include the new Proximity Malt Plant, River Valley Inn Nursing Home, a possible cheese factory, a value-added-ag potato facility and partnerships with representatives from industries that would be new to the San Luis Valley.

River Valley Inn The most recent project greenlighted is the development of a new nursing home in Del Norte owned by River Valley Inn. URGEDC assisted River Valley Inn with the town of Del Norte, Xcel Energy, and the planning commission resulting in approval of the 60-bed nursing home which will begin construction in the spring of 2016. Overall the annual payroll from this nursing home is estimated to be $1,186,836. This should generate a spending pattern which will contribute to an additional $485,416 of earnings throughout the county, town and region. Around 55 new employees will be hired at the new nursing home. This new business through its spending and hiring practices is projected to generate an additional 23 jobs in the region. URGEDC continues to be successful and will likely have an eventful and impactful 2016. To learn more about the economic council and become involved visit www.urg-ed.com.

River Valley Inn breaks ground in Del Norte From the May 5, 2016 Del Norte Prospector BY ANTHONY GUERRERO

DEL NORTE— Ground was broken at the future location of River Valley Inn nursing home on Saturday, April 30. Community leaders are excited for the new building which will replace the one lost in 2013 and help to generate an estimated $485,400 in earnings in different economic sectors and create around 70 new jobs. President and CEO of C&G Healthcare Management, the management corporation who will oversee the new facility, Joyce Humiston, arrived in Del Norte on Saturday to break the first bits of ground with individuals from town who helped the process, and with shareholders. The construction site was also blessed by pastor Joe Archuleta of New Life Fellowship. “Historically every building that we build from ground up we do a groundbreaking ceremony. We also have the property blessed, the project blessed, as well as the people in the community and the people who will be working in the facility. It’s always meant a lot to us to do this,” said Humiston. “This is something great for our city. We’re going to see workers here. It’s a great facility, a great project. It’s going to do wonders… four years ago when I first came to town to be a pastor I prayed for our town to have vitality, for their to jobs for young people, for great places like this to be erected. and Town Administrator Bernadette Martinez. “You are all very blessed to have Marty and Bonnie in this community. They did things for us so we wouldn’t have to drive four and a half hours to fill out paperwork. They’ve been a key part of this,” said Humiston. Humiston also thanked Hurst and Del Norte Bank for the financing of the project. “We’ve always tried to keep our loans local where we build because we want the money to stay in your community. DEL NORTE—Del Norte’s new nursing home is nearing completion. The long-term nursing home, River Valley Inn, is projecting construction completion early this summer. With an estimated cost of $5 million, local suppliers and contractors have benefited from 75 percent of the work done to date. The project is on schedule, and River Valley Inn intends to continue using the same workforce and suppliers through completion. They will begin advertising for employee applications this spring. The 37,500 square foot facility will employ 50 to 70 people, depending on the needs and acuity levels of the residents. This business will have further economic impacts to the area. Employee spending will create an additional $485,400 in earning in other sectors, and about 23 additional jobs will be generated in the region as a result. Construction has been progressing well since the groundbreaking ceremony last May. Community leaders and project leaders gathered at the building site and broke ground celebrating the future. CEO and President of C&G HealthCare Management Joyce Humiston who will oversee the facility has made sure to thank four individuals from the community of Del Norte who have taken extra steps to make the nursing a home a reality. Mike Hurst and Del Norte Town Administrator Bernadette Martinez. Humiston has said the community is very blessed to have the Asplins. She remarked how they have helped in the process by completing things that needed done so the company would not have to travel four hours for simple tasks. Hurst and his bank have also been instrumental. Humiston said that C&G always tries to keep their investments local. They have a commitment to keeping the money that is spent in the community they serve. Humiston said that Hurst made this the easiest banking project C&G has ever gone through. “We are very excited for the Del Norte area and look forward to becoming business partners in the community and caregivers for the people who require help,” said Humison. River Valley Inn will accommodate 60 residents with 32 private rooms and 14 double occupancy rooms. There will be special amenities for its residents including a beauty shop, private dining area, gym, full laundry, commercial kitchen and dining and a therapy kitchen. Linda Carter, a partner with C&G HealthCare Management, gave remarks during last year’s groundbreaking ceremony. “We are a family coming to this town to be a part of your family. Our motto is ‘where quality in life is most important.’ We want to teach this philosophy. One of the things we hope will happen is that this community will visit their friends and family here. We are here to help people get through whatever trials are to come. The staff will become family to the residents; you can be guaranteed of that.”

Nursing home receives final touches Open house Saturday, June 24 BY LYNDSIE FERRELL

DEL NORTE— River Valley Nursing Home is in the final stages of construction and is scheduled to open by the end of June. The nursing home has been under construction for just over a year and opening day is quickly approaching. Construction crews are adding the final touches to the building and preparing for their first guest who will be moving in on June 26. Staff are eager to open the doors and roll out the red carpet for the new nursing home in Del Norte. While walking into the front lobby of the building, the main focus of the room is on the large reception desk placed strategically so that, when manned by nurses and staff, employees can see down the corridors of every hallway. Behind the desk is another large common area where those living at the facility can enjoy beautiful views out the back doors or wander out onto paved decks or walk through gardens that will be planted in the near future. The rooms are open, comforting spaces that offer privacy and easy access to bathrooms and other facilities. The rooms are both private, single occupant rooms as well as double occupant, depending on what the guest prefers. Bathrooms are equipped with state of the art equipment to make everything easier for the guest and nurses that will be on staff to help out. Showers are open rooms and are able to be accessed by wheelchair or lifts to help with bathing. The facility has several common rooms besides the main room that sits in the front of the main entrance. Towards the north end of the building there is a community kitchen where guests can bring their family and friends or just come alone to cook a homemade meal. The kitchen has a dining area that

The kitchen is equipped with brand new appliances that can be used by guests anytime of the day. In addition to the community kitchen, off of the main room sits a dining area, where guests can bring family and friends when they want to have a special celebration or meal. The room has a long table and chairs that can seat up to six guests and will be ideal for birthday celebrations or a special event. The room is quiet, offering privacy to guests with a sliding barn room door. The entire building is adorned with country style decorations that give it a home-like feeling.
