Crafty Young Ladies

Two young ladies inspired by their respective hobbies have ventured into their own home-based soap making businesses, each producing and selling their own unique products here in the far North Phoenix Valley.

Blooming Desert Bars

Temi Morgan’s passion for fine arts began at an early age, where she often found herself intrigued with many different forms of art. Her journey into soap making is a selftaught skill which began as a hobby she developed right out of high school after seeing a video of the soap-making process online. Not only was Temi interested in picking up a creative outlet, she was also looking for a way to help pay her college tuition.

In just a year-and-a-half, this 20-year-old North Phoenix native’s learned hobby has blossomed into a successful small business venture, with her products sold locally in small boutique stores as well as through her website, Instagram and Facebook pages.

Her desert-inspired themed soaps are handcrafted with a glycinate soap base and scented with

cactus blossom, prickly pear, and other essential oil fragrances. But, the coloring process is where Temi’s artistic talent shines, resulting in soaps that look too pretty to use.

“The colors I use are specifically crafted for soap and candle use and are very vibrant and so fun to use in the soap-making process. I love to mix and match the colors to see what combinations I like the most. I personally favor the contrast between turquoise blue and peach pink in my soaps. Towards the end of the soap process, I apply a glitter-like substance called mica that really completes my cactus [soap] bags and makes them sparkle and shine,” Temi told Valley Vibe.

Temi’s personal favorite scents are cactus blossom and blue Capri.

Most of the soaps are molded into cactus and succulent shapes, along

with cowboy boots and traditional rectangle shaped-bars. Her biggest seller is the cactus bags she creates using different colors and designs. Her personal favorite soap is the Sonoran succulent bar: a rectangular bar that consists of three colored layers of blue, green, and

pink. Two small succulents are bonded on the top of the bar, resembling her business logo.

Temi runs her small business while working toward her degree in interior design. She also plans to obtain a license in real estate after college. And, as of now, she said

North Phoenix native, Temi Morgan, sells handcrafted desert-inspired soaps through her business, Blooming Desert Bars.

Krafty Katie Goat Milk Soap

Twelve-year-old Katie Shepherd has taken her love of agriculture to the next level by producing her own farm-fresh soap made from a dairy goat on her grandmother’s property in Desert Hills.

Growing up next door to her grandparents, Katie learned to tend to the chickens, goats and horses on the family’s property at a very young age. She’s actively involved with the Desert Hills Wrangler’s 4-H club, has done some mutton busting competitions, participated in the county fair raising meat goats, and recently began attending Circle Mountain Scholars Micro School in New River where students take an active role in tending to

the school’s farm animals and garden.

Her soap-making venture only recently began as a way to use the milk that is produced daily from the dairy goat the family cares for and leases. The family uses some of the milk produced for consumption, but in an effort to reduce waste, she, with help from her grandmother, Melodie Van Setten, started making soap.

12-year-old

Katie was already assisting with the task of daily milking of the dairy goat named Goose, but was also looking for a way to make some spending money so she could buy Christmas presents for her family.

Katie’s soaps are scented with lavender, vanilla, a combination of both, and unscented bars.

Katie sells her products mostly by word of mouth and at local vendor fairs, but her favorite part of it all still is the daily interaction and connection she has with Goose and the other farm animals.

“Hanging with her, feeding her, brushing her and cleaning the milk when the machine is going is my favorite part,” Katie told Valley Vibe.

Shopping Local

Makes Small Businesses & Nonprofits Strong

The holiday season is a time when shopping small and supporting the local brick-andmortar and home-based businesses that define our community is top of mind.

When you choose to support a small, locally owned business, you support the local community business economy. Local business owners tend to spend locally, too, and often give back to local charities and organizations.

The U.S. Small Business Administration estimates that for every $100 spent at a small business, $48 stays in the community (compared to $14 at a big-box retailer).

While consumer holiday spending may be lower this season due to inflation concerns,

results from a QuickBookscommissioned survey predicts 93 percent of consumers plan to shop small to some degree this season, adding up to over $76 billion in spending at small businesses alone.

Whether it be a gift handcrafted by a local artisan or unique gifts purchased at a small shop, a gift certificate for selfcare, dining and entertainment, and services needed for the home, there are hundreds of ways to support the local business community.

For every $100 spent at a small business, $48 stays in the community (compared to $14 at a big-box retailer).ˮ

Share the Love Year-End Donations to Local Charities Make a Difference

The spirit of giving is strong here in the North Valley, especially this time of year. So many worthy nonprofit organizations benefit from essential donations to keep making a difference in their communities, while donors earn a dollar-fordollar tax credit on their gifts.

In Arizona, the state allows taxpayers to donate to a charity — instead of paying income tax—up to $938 for a joint tax return or $470 for a single tax return.

Foothills Food Bank is one growing nonprofit working to expand to feed more area neighbors in need with its nearly finished 15,000-square foot new campus at Carefree Highway and 41st Street. The new facility, slated for completion in early 2025, will allow the food bank to double its capacity to accept and distribute food.

The organization has already raised 85 percent of its $6.5-million building goal, thanks to the generosity of the local

community. The land was donated by the town of Cave Creek.

“This new facility will greatly expand our ability to store and distribute food and resources, helping us better meet the needs of our community,” said Leigh Zydonik, Executive Director of Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center. “It also gives us space to offer training, financial coaching, self-help programs, and so much more. We’re excited to focus on providing more tools to help break the cycle of poverty.”

Here are a handful of the many local organizations that thrive with support from the local community through tax-deductible contributions.

Lady Eagles Win State Championship

Ridgeline Academy’s Lady Eagles Varsity Volleyball team are state champions once again.

The Lady Eagles won the championship title last month, making the team state champions for the second year in a row. Heading into the championship game, the team held the No. 1 seed with a record of 17 wins and 1 loss this season.

The championship match was played against Basis Peoria High School at ASU Desert Financial Arena, where the team won by a score of 3–2.

Ridgeline senior Raven Grant was named most valuable player. Team members include: Raven Grant, Bella Pettis, Brennalyn Egli, Grace Van Dijk, Camilla Cruz, Rylie Morris,

Sophie Richter, Chelsie Sichrovsky and Sahara Thompson.

The team is coached by Gary Cloud and assisted by Tori Nelson.

Active Inventory Dips Locally, Home Sales Increase Predicted in 2025

Active home listings in our local tracking zones dipped 4 percent from last month as the seasonal market slowdown sets in, but inventory in the Phoenix metro area overall continues to rise, as well as on the national level.

Year-over-year data in the greater Phoenix metro area shows an increase of 47 percent in available housing inventory when compared to the same month last year, according to a report from Clear Title Agency of Arizona.

Monthly Real Estate Snapshot

Nationally, an increase in home sales is predicted by the National Association of Realtors, along with slower home price appreciation.

“We have to have more supply,” said National Association of Realtors Chief Economist Lawerence Yun. “Per our advocacy efforts, we’re trying everything we can to boost supply.”

Yun noted that 2023 was difficult for existing-home sales and 2024 looks to be the same. However, he flagged that we did get an increase in pending home sales in September and provided his forecast for existing-home sales.

30-day totals from 10/15/2024 to 11/15/2024 highlighting the following North Phoenix neighborhoods (area codes 85083, 85085, 85086 & 85087)

“Maybe the worst is coming to an end,” added Yun. “Directionally, I think there’s going to be roughly a 10 percent boost of existinghome sales in 2025 and 2026.”

On the mortgage front, rates ticked back up again. “Heading into the holidays, purchase demand remains in the doldrums. While for-sale inventory is increasing modestly, the elevated interest rate environment has caused new construction to soften,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s Chief Economist.
