FOCUS

Valley View CEO, Gary Brewer, Announces Retirement Valley View’s long-time Chief Executive Officer, Gary Brewer, is retiring in 2019. Gary will begin a leadership transition process to welcome Brian Murphy, MD, as Valley View’s new CEO. Brewer’s decision to retire marks over 21 years of remarkable service to expand and evolve the scope and caliber of care offered by Valley View. “Our patients and community have benefited greatly from Gary’s work and expertise. During Gary’s tenure, Valley Gary Brewer View has effectively evolved from a local hospital into an organization meeting the complex healthcare needs of our region. From comprehensive cancer care to interventional cardiology and care locations across our community, Gary has led our board, staff and providers in realizing a new vision for the kind of care available locally, close to home,” says Brian Leasure, Valley View Board of Trustees president. “This has been an incredible journey over the past 21 years. I am grateful for our amazing medical providers, talented staff and dedicated community who have inspired us to challenge the idea of what is possible for a rural community. Today, Valley View offers a scope and level of care that is truly exceptional. I am thrilled to have Dr. Murphy lead Valley View forward, tapping into new ideas and possibilities for Valley View, our patients and the community we serve,” says Brewer.

Trained at Duke University Medical Center, Dr. Brian Murphy is a board-certified urologist with Rocky Mountain Urology Center at Valley View who has practiced for over 18 years in the community. During this time, Dr. Murphy has held a number of leadership positions, such as Valley View Chief of Staff Dr. Brian Murphy and Valley View Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Murphy was also the Associate Director of the Duke University urology residency program. He has worked adeptly with providers, staff and administration and is a committed member of the Roaring Fork community. Dr. Murphy will become Valley View’s Chief Operating Officer as he transitions his practice and will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer upon Brewer’s retirement later this year. Brewer has led nothing short of a transformation of healthcare available to residents and visitors of the Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valleys. Under his stewardship, Valley View Hospital has grown to a 21-acre medical campus, including the addition of nearly 400,000 square feet of advanced hospital and medical offices. The new facilities have ushered in expanded healthcare services previously unavailable to the community. The availability of neurosurgery, comprehensive cancer care and interventional cardiology enables residents to stay local for both emergent and planned care. In navigating a constantly changing landscape, Brewer led work to support the continuity of primary care for the community. Primary care, internal medicine, OB/GYN and certified midwife Continued

Letter from Patti Miely Valley View Foundation President Spring is around the corner, and we wait with excitement for the increase in daylight and the promise of warmer days. The changing seasons remind me of our journey and the great positives, often intertwined with times of challenge, that lead us down our path. While we celebrate all that philanthropy accomplished last year, and look forward to supporting new initiatives in patient‑centered care in 2019, we also hold in our hearts a deep sense of loss with the passing of Jim Calaway, one of our greatest supporters. In his memory, we move forward embracing his mantra, “be generous, be genuine, be grateful.” We are grateful to the incredible support of our donors who helped make so much possible in 2018 and created the momentum that launches us into 2019. Last year, we successfully concluded raising funds for Health4Life. Funds raised for this program allowed nearly 200 individuals to lower their risk of heart attack and stroke and made this resource available to others moving forward. We also made great strides toward the $2.75 million goal to support innovative technologies in the new Advanced Catheterization Laboratories at Valley View. The expertise and technology now available at Valley View saved 121 people’s lives during heart attacks in 2018. We ask for your continued support as we work to close this effort in 2019.

Continued practices have all become part of Valley View to ensure our community’s access to high-quality primary care. New care locations in Willits and Silt have made care more convenient for those living and working outside of Glenwood Springs. During Brewer’s tenure, Valley View also evolved as a major economic engine for the community. Employment grew from over 400 in 1997 to nearly 1,200 in 2019, generating demand for other workers such as school teachers, retail workers and accountants. The growth in the Valley View medical staff – from 40 to nearly 200 in 2018 – demonstrates not only a positive economic impact for the community, but also represents the significant growth in care and services for all patients. Renovations and new construction also created millions of dollars in direct and secondary earnings for the community. Since joining Valley View in 1997, Brewer initiated and led cultural changes to orient all aspects of Valley View’s care around the patient. From policies around open medical records, to service trainings and intentional architectural design, Brewer has remained steadfast in his commitment to not only the quality of Valley View’s care, but the experience of its patients. “At the end of the day, it has always been about doing what is right for our patients. That is why we are here: to serve our patients,” says Brewer. Brewer leaves a long and impactful legacy, not only for Valley View as an organization, but for the community as a whole.

Finally, we renew our commitment to Rally year-round for our cancer patients! Watch for new and exciting events to happen in 2019! I end this note with our deepest gratitude for the generosity of our donors. Each of you is a part of the Valley View family and your support impacts the health of our community. THANK YOU! With warm wishes for the season, Patti Miely, President Valley View Foundation Board of Directors

Meet the new physicians at Valley View’s Heart & Vascular Center Through the incredible generosity of our community, Valley View now has the technologies to meet the increasing demand for advanced cardiovascular services on the Western Slope. To continue to meet the needs of our community, we welcome two world-class physicians to join Valley View's cutting-edge Heart & Vascular department. Qaisar Khan, MD Dr. Khan specializes in complex coronary stents, pacemakers, defibrillators, peripheral arterial and venous disease, clots and vein ablation procedures. He was drawn to a career in medicine, and specifically heart care, after seeing heart disease first-hand within his own family, when his father had heart stents inserted. Dr. Khan attended medical school at the Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. He then completed his residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, followed by a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Khan has also completed fellowships for cardiovascular CT angiography and interventional cardiology at Indiana University. Dr. Khan is board-certified in interventional cardiology, endovascular medicine, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. He brings a deep understanding of the human heart and the vascular system to Valley View and greatly enjoys problem solving.

Expanding Heart Care Fills An Important Rural Void With philanthropic support, the Heart & Vascular Center at Valley View has met the growing demand for cardiology services on the Western Slope. No longer is it necessary to drive to Denver or Salt Lake City for world-class care. Valley View cardiology services are now offered in Grand Junction, Eagle, Glenwood Springs, Meeker, Rangely, Rifle and Battlement Mesa, providing essential care for patients in the region suffering from heart disease. Without the expansion of Valley View Heart & Vascular services, individuals seeking heart care would otherwise have to drive to Denver or Salt Lake City to receive high level care. This is particularly important because of the high rate of atrial fibrillation in our area. Normally referred to as AFib, this is a common heart condition that has a higher than average prevalence along the rural Western slope because of the high altitude which can exacerbate the symptoms of sleep apnea (including AFib).

"The ability for patients to see providers that live and work alongside them in the community is part of the appeal of living in a rural area,” said Dr. Frank Laws, Medical Director of the Heart & Vascular Center at Valley View. The hybrid cardiac catheterization lab at Valley View, brought here with philanthropic support, continues to push the scope of services offered by the Heart & Vascular Center. “With minimally invasive and bloodless procedures now becoming the standard of care,” Dr. Laws said, “we have the tools and staff necessary to treat the most complex of heart cases.” These extraordinary services are possible because of philanthropic support. To date, more than $1.8 million has been donated to support the incredible Heart & Vascular Center at Valley View.

Did you know… The American Heart Association reports that more than 2.7 million Americans are living with atrial fibrillation (AFib), which can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other complications.

What is AFib? “In atrial fibrillation, the upper chambers of the heart experience chaotic electrical signals, and quiver as a result. The electrical connection between the atria and the ventricles in the heart is inundated with impulses, leading to a fast and irregular heart rhythm.” – Dr. Frank Laws, Medical Director of the Heart & Vascular Center at Valley View.

Do you need to see a heart specialist? Risk factors for atrial fibrillation, or AFib, include age, presence of heart disease, high blood pressure, drinking alcohol, obesity and a family history of AFib. Living at altitude increases the symptoms of sleep apnea, which includes AFib, so the condition is common along the Western Slope of Colorado. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: •

A racing heartbeat

“When left untreated, patients have a five times higher chance of having a stroke and are at greater risk of heart failure,” Dr. Laws said.

• Weakness

AFib can be treated with blood thinners or other anticoagulant medications, but when medication is ineffective, an ablation may be necessary. This outpatient procedure is usually done using catheters and is minimally invasive.

• Confusion

“Different types of ablation include radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation and laser ablation," Dr. Laws explained. “The Heart & Vascular Center is the first center in Colorado to use laser ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation.”
