2022 Valley View Report to the Community

At Valley View, we are striving to be the region’s independent healthcare leader. The COVID-19 pandemic launched us into two intensive years of work to not only respond to the virus but lead the community in administering vaccines. While 2022 offered a reprieve from the pandemic, we worked harder than ever to advance our services and collaborations to drive our vision forward.

Incredible growth occurred in 2022 in services that are vital to the health of our community and distinguish Valley View in the region. We welcomed new providers such as Urologist Scott Castle, MD with the Rocky Mountain Urology Center, Orthopedic Surgeon Daniel O’Connor, MD with ValleyOrtho and Family Medicine

Physicians Haley Hoffman, DO and Karen Locke, MD with Roaring Fork Family Practice. Neurosurgeon Wade Ceola, MD, began using a new robotic platform for complex spinal procedures to support a heightened level of precision and accuracy during spinal procedures such as lumbar fusions. Lastly, urology patients began benefitting from new leading-edge minimally-invasive procedures to treat BPH including Aquablation.

With growth in patient care came growth in numerous collaborations. In 2022, we launched a new partnership with Memorial Regional Health in Craig to bring the services of both the Heart and Vascular Center and Calaway•Young Cancer Center to that community. This augments long-standing partnerships with other area hospitals such as Aspen Valley Hospital and Grand River Health to bring Valley View’s specialty services to patients of those hospitals. Partnerships with other entities such as local departments of health, Mountain Family Health Centers, human service organizations and more grew to support the whole-health of our patients and advance the well-being of our community.

This report showcases other incredible work and accomplishments by the Valley View team. As always, a heartfelt thank you to all of you who supported Valley View in 2022 to make this possible.

This year, we pause to acknowledge the remarkable compassion and fortitude of our colleagues and team members from across the Valley View network of care. The past years have presented numerous challenges – from the COVID-19 pandemic to the Grizzly Creek wildfire and resulting mudslides. Throughout these events, we have continued to grow our services to include open heart surgery, after-hours urgent care, a ValleyOrtho office in downtown Aspen, and advanced endoscopy services. Every day, we also continue to deliver extraordinary, highquality care to patients with an incredible array of healthcare needs.

We are so grateful to the fantastic Valley View team that includes providers, nurses, technicians, therapists, administrative staff and so many more. It is our people that truly make us great, bringing not only their expertise but their passion for our mission to work every day. Noteworthy Achievements

Valley View was again designated as a Level III Trauma Center by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, a designation Valley View has held since 1998.

As a Level III Trauma Center, Valley View provides 24-hour coverage by emergency medicine physicians, general surgeons and anesthesiologists. Emergency care is available for all ages including infants, children and adults. As part of this designation, Valley View promptly provides assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care, and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations. Valley View also has special partnerships with other Colorado hospitals to transfer patients requiring more comprehensive care via the Classic Air helicopter.

25 YEARS OF SUPPORTING STUDENT ATHLETES

For 25 years, Valley View has provided a pro-bono, sports medicine program to the Roaring Fork School District. With a primary focus to keep athletes safe from injuries, Valley View will continue its dedication to the Roaring Fork School District by providing staff salaries, equipment and supplies for the athletic trainers at Glenwood Springs High School, Roaring Fork High School and Basalt High School. Over the duration of the partnership, Valley View has invested nearly $7 million in the district’s student-athletes.

2020-2021 RESILIENCY AWARD

In February, Valley View received special recognition from the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce for its response to the challenges of 2020 and 2021. Valley View was showcased for being on the forefront of COVID-19, by not only caring for patients but leading the community in administering COVID-19 vaccines. When the Grizzly Creek fire sparked on August 10, 2020, the team at Valley View rallied again to overcome challenges related to supply routes and commuting to ensure no disruption to patient care.

RE-DESIGNATION

Valley View once again achieved the highly prestigious international Baby-Friendly designation after a rigorous review process conducted by Baby-Friendly USA, the organization responsible for bestowing this certification in the United States. Redesignated through 2026, Valley View has held this important designation since 2016.

“Valley V iew has long been a recognized leader in the care of women and newborns,” said Ellen H. Brooks, MD, FAAP, medical director of pediatrics at Valley View. “This redesignation is a tribute to our commitment to this care. We ensure every woman who delivers a baby at our facility is given the resources, information and support needed to help her and her baby get the best, healthiest start in life.”

2022 WOMEN’S CHOICE AWARD

Valley View was named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics, Heart Care and Minimally Invasive Surgeries by the 2022 Women’s Choice Award®. The Award only honors the top 10% of hospitals in the nation. The award signifies that Valley View is in the top 3% for obstetrics, top 4% for heart care and top 6% for minimally invasive surgeries.

“We are proud of our incredible scope of care offered to women, from prevention to obstetrics to complex health issues. We are here for women throughout all phases of their lives and grateful for this recognition,” said Emily McCarty, MD, the Medical Director of Women’s Health at Valley View.

A PASSION FOR SERVICE

Volunteers play a vital role in our commitment to patient care and extend selfless acts of kindness to support our patients and staff at Valley View. Volunteers bring compassion, care and cheer to all with whom they interact. We are truly grateful for their work and service. Valley View has 90 extraordinary volunteers in 20 different locations around the hospital and at Roaring Fork Family Practice.

Volunteer Highlight: Viola Huber

Viola is a retired nurse who has volunteered with Day Surgery and the Emergency Room for the past 22 years. She bakes warm bread every Thursday morning for the staff in Day Surgery which is a special treat enjoyed by all. We are so grateful for Viola and all the volunteers who share their time and talents with Valley View.

A MILESTONE FOR CANCER CARE IN OUR COMMUNITY

In 2022 the Calaway•Young Cancer Center celebrated its tenth anniversary of providing comprehensive cancer treatment to patients. The Center’s services include advanced medical oncology, radiation oncology, infusion, integrated therapies, patient counseling and survivorship programs. The teams of providers utilize a collaborative care approach, working closely with other caregivers at Valley View Hospital, including primary care physicians, surgeons, and other medical specialists to support high-quality, compassionate care for each patient. This approach has supported the treatment of thousands of patients from across the entire region. Valley View is grateful to the community members who have generously supported cancer patients, creating an unparalleled compassionate approach to cancer treatment.

Valley View Foundation

The final Rally the Valley event celebrated the anniversary of the Calaway•Young Cancer Center and raised funds to support patients in treatment. The Valley View Foundation is building an $8 million endowment to provide earnings to benefit cancer patients in perpetuity.
