members served thousands of patients with incredible expertise. Our administration of COVID-19 vaccines is perhaps among the greatest examples of service to the community in Valley View’s history. Our team united to host over 30 vaccine clinics, administering nearly 28,000 vaccine doses. Team members stepped away from their normal roles to plan and lead these clinics to administer vaccines in a safe and timely manner. I know of no other hospital that has played such a remarkable role in their community. I am grateful to the Valley View staff and volunteers for their commitment and to all of you who entrusted Valley View with your COVID-19 vaccines. Valley View also made incredible advancements in heart, vascular and lung care. An experienced team led by Cardiothoracic Surgeon Stephen Jones, MD now provides open heart surgery, minimally invasive surgical approaches for atrial fibrillation and heart valves, and new lung cancer operations. This new care builds upon the scope of care available to our community through our nationallyrecognized Heart and Vascular Center. It also reflects Valley View’s steadfast commitment to helping our community access specialty care. Looking ahead, Valley View remains deeply committed to responding to the healthcare needs of our patients and community. In 2021, Valley View began offering open heart surgery, minimally invasive surgical approaches for atrial fibrillation and heart valves, and new lung cancer operations.

With the leadership of Cardiothoracic Surgeon Stephen Jones, MD, Valley View now can provide patients: •
Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: Also known as open heart surgery or CABG, for patients who need new blood flow supplied to the heart muscle that cannot be addressed in the cardiac catheterization lab.

Heart Valve Surgery: Both minimally invasive and open procedures are offered.

Surgical Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation (AFib): This is a minimally invasive surgical hybrid approach for the treatment of AFib.

Thoracic Surgery: New surgical procedures for patients needing lung biopsy, surgery for lung cancer, or tube placement to drain excess fluid from the chest.

ValleyOrtho Aspen
ValleyOrtho opened a new, centrally located office at 132 West Main Street, Suite A, Aspen. The office boasts double the space of its previous office, as well as more accessible parking, and a robust list of orthopedic services. “At ValleyOrtho, we are dedicated to putting our patients first and providing them with the most convenient and comprehensive care possible,” said Orthopedic Surgeon Tomas Pevny, MD of ValleyOrtho. “The new office gives our patients access to cuttingedge technologies and support services in a comfortable environment. Instead of patients having to travel and make multiple appointments, on-site X-rays and imaging allow us to diagnose and treat patients the same day.”
CALAWAY•YOUNG CANCER CENTER SERVING THE REGION

The Calaway•Young Cancer Center continued to evolve to meet the needs of the region in 2021. Partnerships with Aspen Valley Hospital and Grand River Health in Rifle brought the caring expertise of the Center’s oncologists to more conveniently serve patients in those communities. Alexandra Donovan, MD, MPH, joined the Center in November. Originally from Vail, she works as both an Oncologist and Hematologist, providing specialized care to patients with a broad spectrum of cancers and blood disorders. 10
OPENING OF AFTER HOURS URGENT CARE
To respond to the community’s needs, Valley View opened a new after hours urgent care in January. A solution between primary care and the hospital emergency room, this new service provides high quality patient care for a reasonable price. After Hours Urgent Care treats patients aged six months and older with non-emergent illnesses and injuries. If needs turn out to be more serious, Valley View’s emergency department is conveniently only a few steps away, and patients do not have to be transported by an ambulance.
MATERNAL AND INFANT CARE QUALITY CHAMPION
Valley View was recognized as a Maternal and Infant Care Quality Champion by the Colorado Perinatal Care Quality Collaborative (CPCQC). This designation signifies that the hospital has access to the most current data, best practices and resources available and is leading the way for the safest, healthiest outcomes for Colorado’s women and infants.

Valley View is proud to care for those in need in our community. In 2021, Valley View provided $13.7 million in charity care.
2021 TOP 100 RURAL & COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
In 2021, Valley View Hospital was honored by Chartis Center for Rural Health for its outstanding performance among the nation’s rural hospitals. The hospital was assessed across eight pillars of performance, including market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge, and financial efficiency.

A PASSION FOR SERVICE
at Valley View Volunteers played a vital and supportive role at Valley View’s COVID-19 vaccine clinics and in the daily care of patients. Integral to each vaccine clinic hosted at the hospital, Valley View volunteers served as line directors, cheerleaders and supported post-vaccine observations. The vaccine clinics operated with more joy and energy thanks to their efforts. In addition to vaccine clinics, Valley View volunteers lent their time and talents across the hospital. From the cancer center to endoscopy and day surgery, volunteers supported and enhanced the experience of patients. Valley View was also lucky to have four-legged volunteers serving patients and staff. Valley View is always looking to expand its volunteer family. TWO NEW ENDOWMENTS CREATE ON-GOING SUPPORT FOR CANCER PATIENTS AND NURSES AT VALLEY VIEW A $2 million endowed gift to support cancer care was directed to Valley View’s integrated therapies, emergency assistance in the form of gas and grocery gift cards, support and survivorship programs, and overnight lodging. The donor, who asked to remain anonymous, honored Stephen Mayer, MD, PhD, FACP, a medical oncologist with the Calaway•Young Cancer Center at Valley View, as a gesture of gratitude. Dr. Mayer is Valley View’s first ever Endowed Chair of Medical Oncology. To fully fund these support services and programs for patients of the Calaway•Young Cancer Center, Valley View Foundation seeks an additional $6M in endowed gifts. An endowment differs from a standard donation. In an endowment, the donation is invested to earn revenue. This revenue creates an on-going source of income for a cause. In addition to the endowed gift to support cancer patients, a local philanthropist committed $1.5 million to benefit the Nursing Excellence Program at Valley View. In 2017, this philanthropist experienced, first hand, the impact that nurses have on patients and their families and was inspired to provide scholarships to those who wanted to become nurses and obtain their certifications. We are grateful for these incredible gifts that create such a lasting impact.
