The Power of Endowments: Valley View Foundation proudly announces $3.5 million in endowment gifts Valley View Foundation is excited to announce the launch of TWO endowment funds - $2 million to support cancer patients and $1.5 million to support nurses at Valley View. An endowment differs from a standard donation. In an endowment, the donation is invested to earn revenue. This revenue creates an on-going source of income for a cause. The $2 million endowed gift to support cancer care will be directed to Valley View’s integrated therapies, emergency assistance in the form of gas and grocery gift cards, support and survivorship programs, and overnight lodging.
In addition to the endowed gift to support cancer patients, local philanthropist Pete Welles committed $1.5M to benefit the Nursing Excellence Program at Valley View. In 2017, Pete and his late wife Sondra provided an initial donation to launch the “Sondra and Peter Welles Nursing Excellence Program.” Pete and Sondra saw first-hand the impact that nurses have on patients and their families and were inspired to provide scholarships to those who wanted to be nurses and obtain their certifications.
“We are extremely grateful for this gift that will benefit patients on their cancer journey at Valley View in perpetuity,” said Jo Bershenyi, manager of Integrated Therapies. “Undergoing medical treatment can be a very emotional and stressful time for patients and their families. We aim to help mitigate the stress that patients may feel on their journey towards optimal health. It’s a true honor to work alongside these resilient patients every day.” The donor, who asked to remain anonymous, honored Stephen Mayer, MD, PhD, FACP, a medical oncologist with the Calaway•Young Cancer Center at Valley View, as a gesture of gratitude. Dr. Mayer will be Valley View’s first ever Endowed Chair of Medical Oncology in recognition of this tremendous gift. Board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine, Dr. Mayer became a physician as a second career following 15 years as a molecular biologist. His areas of focus include gastrointestinal, prostate, bladder, kidney, gynecologic, melanoma, neuroendocrine, breast, lung, hematologic malignancies, and benign hematology. To fully fund these support services and programs for patients of the Calaway•Young Cancer Center, Valley View Foundation is seeking an additional $6M in endowed gifts.

With this new endowment gift, this program will be funded in perpetuity and earnings will provide education opportunities to nurses at Valley View. From four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees to certifications and continuing education, this new endowment supports nurses with their individual advancement and, in turn, the care they provide patients at Valley View. As we embrace 2022, let me begin by thanking our incredible 2021 donors who supported patient care at Valley View with their generosity. At the end of 2021, with the support of two major donors, Valley View Foundation launched its first endowments – one to support patients of the Calaway•Young Cancer Center at Valley View and the other to support nursing education. We thank all our donors for moving us forward and to the donors who have supported endowment funding. As a community, we still are experiencing COVID-19 and its seemingly never-ending effects. Valley View has been the leader in the region for vaccinations and patient support. Watching our dedicated staff and volunteers work to ensure that everyone who chooses to be vaccinated has had that opportunity puts a smile on my face. Taking the time from daily routines at the hospital to vaccinate our community has been an enormous endeavor for Valley View, but I can assure you that the staff and volunteers embraced the opportunity with smiles, patience, perseverance, caring and so much more. As a Valley View volunteer, I personally witnessed the endless love that was given on each vaccination day. I met many wonderful people who shared their appreciation for Valley View. As we continue to embrace every new day and each changing season I encourage everyone in our valley to support Valley View in any form. You can participate in the health of our community through philanthropic support, volunteerism or by informing your friends and neighbors about Valley View. We are so fortunate to have Valley View in our community. My hope is that you will all be a part of the Valley View family in 2022! Again, I want to thank all of our donors. Summit Circle’s newest members
VALLEY VIEW FOUNDATION
Philanthropy brings new robotic technology to the Spine Center at Valley View Three incredible local families have provided $650,000 to help purchase a Medtronic MazorX Spine Robotic Guidance Platform to assist Wade Ceola, MD, FACS, FAANS, neurosurgeon at the Spine Center at Valley View. This is the first spine robot in Western Colorado, ahead of any facility in in the region. These gifts kickoff a $2 million campaign to support the purchase of a complete suite of hardware and software, including a new O-Ring CT scanner, to assist Dr. Ceola and his team. “For people with chronic back pain due to common degenerative conditions like arthritis, successful spinal surgery can bring a return to normal life and activity,” says Dr. Ceola.

This state-of-the-art robotic spinal surgery system will dramatically enhance Dr. Ceola’s ability to perform minimally invasive spine procedures and position Valley View to offer our community the premiere spine center between Denver and Salt Lake City. This new robotic spinal surgery system will provide patients with: • Less pain after surgery • Decreased risk of infection • Little or no need for narcotic pain medicine • Shortened procedure wait times from months to weeks • Improved in-hospital recovery time for days to hours Medtronic MazorX Spine Robotic Guidance Platform
The second and critical phase of the plan is the purchase of the very latest Stealth8 Spine Surgery Navigation System from Medtronic. If the MazorX robot is the ‘arm’ that assists Dr. Ceola with surgery, the Stealth8 O-Arm CT scanner is the ‘brain’ and the ‘eyes’ that help guide the robot. The robot is extremely useful, but it requires the Stealth8 to fully optimize its capabilities. The plan calls for the Stealth8 to be online with the robot no later than the end of 2023, ideally sooner. Thanks to incredible generosity in 2021, the Valley View Foundation launched two endowments, we purchased and implemented new urology technology, support services are available for our cancer patients, and projects throughout the hospital received funding. Valley View continues to work to meet the needs of our community. We opened an after-hours urgent care to offer a lower cost option compared to the emergency room. Valley View continues to collaborate and support Aspen Valley Hospital and Grand River Health to offer expertise in cancer and heart care at locations throughout the region. We strive to provide the best care for our community where we live.
