Connecting Philanthropists with Physicians State-of-the-Art Imaging Technology for Urology Care After a transformational patient experience at Valley View, philanthropists Gregory and Judith Friedman sought a way to give back that would ultimately help better serve the healthcare needs of our community.

In 2015, Gregory Friedman was diagnosed with prostate cancer and in 2017 it was determined that the best course of treatment would be HDR Brachytherapy. At the time, Valley View did not have the capability to do HDR, nor did they have an MRI/ Ultrasound Fusion Biopsy machine (this machine enables precise biopsy of suspected lesions). Gregory's urologist, Brian Murphy, MD (now Valley View CEO) recommended he seek treatment away from home at a facility with more resources. Since 2017, there have been extraordinary advancements at Valley View, including the capability to perform HDR Brachytherapy. However, Valley View still did not have the critical Fusion Biopsy machine. Gregory and Judith saw an opportunity to help bring this state-of-the-art technology to our community. Now in the care of urologist Ash Kabra, MD, Gregory began discussions regarding ways to help patients, especially those with prostate concerns. Combining Dr. Kabra’s medical insight, Gregory’s knowledge of information technology and a major gift of more than $150,000, Gregory and Judith secured state-of-theart imaging technology for Valley View, as well as the processing power to handle it. “I am thrilled to finally say that we successfully launched our UroNav MRI/US Fusion Prostate Biopsy program here at Valley View! Embracing the Light! Embracing the light is different for each of us. The light of a new day, the light of spring, the light that we all are hoping for as COVID-19 vaccines roll out to the world and we see the light of health shining through. Watching Valley View staff and volunteers work every week to ensure our community is vaccinated has been one of my greatest joys this late winter/early spring. There is no limit to what our hospital is capable of with such a dedicated staff. Thousands of vaccines have been administered and every staff member that I have had the privilege of working with has a smile on their face and a kind word to every community member that comes in for a vaccine. As we continue to embrace a guarded comfort regarding COVID-19, I want to thank not only Valley View staff and community volunteers, but all of our generous donors. Our donors have made a challenging 2020 turn into a promise for the future of Valley View. Thank you to all who are part of the Valley View family of donors. As we know, 2020 was an extraordinary year – the challenges surrounding COVID-19 were and continue to be something new to us all. With that said, the generosity and collaboration of our community supported us in providing comprehensive care to COVID-19 patients from our community. Now in 2021 we are proud to help lead the vaccine efforts in our county. Beyond the immediate needs of COVID-19 pandemic, your support allowed Valley View to continue to push the envelope of what is possible for an independent rural healthcare provider. Last year, with the help of philanthropy, we acquired new state-of-the-art imaging equipment both for breast health and prostate care. We started a new sleep apnea program, provided nursing scholarships, and continued to offer support services for our cancer patients. Valley View is deeply committed to providing its patients with world-class healthcare. Meet the New Physicians at Valley View As Valley View works to meet the complex medical needs of our community, we are excited to welcome new physicians. Stephen Jones, MD Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Heart & Vascular Center at Valley View Stephen Jones, MD is the newest member of Valley View’s Heart and Vascular Center. He began his medical career as a member of the U.S. Army, serving in a number of posts around the country during that segment of his career. After his active military service, Dr. Jones moved on to become the Staff Cardiothoracic Surgeon with Alaska Cardiothoracic Surgery and then moved on to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho, where he was the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery. While there, he developed the first minimally invasive Cardiac Surgery Valve program in Idaho, perfecting surgical techniques that involve making small incisions in the right side of the chest to get to the heart. These techniques are a vast improvement on frontal, open-heart surgery, which is far more painful, and takes far longer to recover from.

Stanley Gertzbein, MD Conservative Spinal Surgeon, Spine Center at Valley View Dr. Gertzbein is a board-certified, internationally recognized conservative spinal surgeon, with decades of clinical experience and author of research that is still cited as the international medical standard. He has provided leadership in academia as a full professor at Baylor College of Medicine, University of Toronto, and University of Texas in Galveston. Additionally, he has lectured extensively around the country and the world.

Jeffrey Thornton, MD Neurologist, Neurology Center at Valley View Dr. Jeff Thornton is a board-certified neurologist and the newest team member of the Neurology Center at Valley View. He treats a broad spectrum of neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, migraine, neuropathy, traumatic brain injury and concussion. Dr. Thornton brings a straightforward, powerful patient care philosophy to his practice.

Valley View Debuts New After Hours Urgent-Care Providing Convenient, High-Quality Care In direct response to our community’s feedback, Valley View is proud to announce the opening of After Hours Urgent Care. The opening of After Hours Urgent care creates a solution between primary care and the emergency room, offering convenient, urgent care within the Valley View system. “Valley View’s After Hours Urgent Care will be able to treat patients faster and more affordably, and since the location is linked to the hospital, patients will receive exceptional healthcare from Valley View’s comprehensive team,” shared Ben Peery, MD, Medical Director of the After Hours Urgent Care and Emergency Services and emergency department physician. After Hours Urgent Care is located next to Valley View’s Emergency Department and is open evenings and weekends for same-day, walk-in care. It treats non-emergent illnesses and injuries. If injuries turn out to be serious, Valley View’s Emergency Department is conveniently only a few steps away, and patients do not have to be transported by an ambulance. After Hours Urgent Care treats patients aged 6 months and older for the following minor health conditions: sore throat, cough, sinus pain, nasal congestion, ear pain, fever, mild allergic reaction, rash, urinary complaint, eye irritation, strains and sprains, lacerations and abrasions, toothache or dental concerns, foreign body removal. If patients don’t already have a primary care doctor, the professionals at After Hours Urgent Care will try to partner them with one in the Valley View system. Valley View is trying to reduce silos in healthcare, in which the primary doctor should be the first point of contact. Donate directly from your Individual Retirement Account Increasingly, donors are seizing the opportunity to make charitable gifts directly from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA). If you are 70.5 years old or older, you can use this simple method to benefit Valley View and potentially receive tax benefits in return. Up to $100,000 can be directed from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as Valley View, without having to pay income tax on that money. This popular gift option is called an IRA charitable rollover or a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). This method can also be used to satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year.
