EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Experiential learning at Valpo illuminates your path from the start. Core courses like Field Biology take you beyond the classroom and into the Indiana Dunes National Park, where you’ll encounter rare ecosystems and learn to understand their delicate dynamics. In Forensic Biology, you’ll engage in unforgettable hands-on experiences at Tennessee’s Anthropological Research Facility, known as the body farm, to analyze forensic evidence and study decomposition in a real-world context. For those pursuing careers in health sciences, our cadaver lab and rigorous classes in human physiology provide a strong foundation for medical school and healthcare roles. You can also participate in interdisciplinary projects tackling global issues — analyzing antibacterial-resistant organisms that have been found on the International Space Station or studying industrial waste impacts in a partnership with Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico. Through these impactful, hands-on experiences, you’ll emerge prepared to radiate your passion, grounded in practical expertise.

EXPERT MENTORSHIP

At Valpo, you’re supported every step of the way by faculty mentors who bring a wealth of research expertise and a deep commitment to your success. In small, close-knit classes, professors guide you through complex topics, hands-on labs, and career exploration, helping you feel grounded as you grow academically and personally. Faculty advisors work with you individually, supporting your goals — whether you’re aiming for medical school, a graduate program, or a career in the scientific workforce. You’ll gain not only knowledge but also confidence and a vision for your future, grounded in the mentorship of faculty who genuinely care about your success.

“Our trip to the Anthropological Research Facility in Tennessee was like a wrap up of the whole course. It not only showed us multiple stages of decomposition of a body, but also skeletons, the excavation process, stages or preservation, and how to handle evidence. This trip emphasizes the importance of taking courses where you feel like you learn something new every day with a professor who cares about her students.”
