hat’s the movie of the year? The song of the year? The business idea of the year? The most overused business phrase of the year, or should we just throw that one under the bus with a synergistic out of the box plan of attack? No one can agree on much of anything these days, but from a color-sales standpoint, that gives you lots of options. One thing paint companies are starting to agree on is that there should be a BY editor color of the year—it can set JERRY RABUSHKA a mood, set you apart, and be a great launch point for folks who want to be on trend or a point of avoidance for folks who don’t. There are several colors sharing the same award, so people who like a particular shade won’t have to wait too many years for it to be “in.” Another good reason to be in tune with on trend colors is that they’ll be a perfect pick for people who

are redecorating (or finally decorating). Curtains, pillows and accessories trend just the same, and this year’s paint colors are more likely to go with them than the avocado green and the harvest gold of the halcyon disco days of yore.
Democracy in Action
Along with the different winning colors, there are different ways this prize is awarded. Some have one person make a determination while others put a few finalist colors to a vote. Diamond Vogel Paint narrowed it down to a Final Four, then took the playoff to its customers. That takes some trust—the company has to trust the customers to pick the color, and the customers have to trust the company to give them qualified choices. “Our customers rely on our color expertise, both in delivering the color they demand and for education on the newest trends. Those that specify color look for

Color of the Year
Page 10: Diamond Vogel’s color of the year, Ocean Storms, is a gray with a blue undertone—exactly what you’d see in an ocean storm, yet this storm leads to a peaceful neutral backdrop in and outside the home. The color is described as “a modern yet classic blue-gray with confident presence, yet simple style. Ocean Storms is a muted blue combining the the popularity of blue along with the appeal of restful gray, delivering easy living and modern flair.” Interior: Ocean Storms is a great color to showcase furniture, artwork, and accents without being overwhelming. Exterior: It can be the central color and pairs well with white, cream and soft gray as well as charcoal for trim and accents. validation of the colors that are important to consumers,” explained Sandy Agar-Studelska, colorist and Diamond Vogel color marketing manager. “In deciding our pick, we turned the conversation to them and asked for their help in selecting this important choice from four directional colors.” […the envelope please…] Ocean Storms won the crown. That’s an interesting color name for a company based in Orange City, Iowa and that serves the Midwest, but there you have it—perhaps this color “coasted” to victory! Diamond Vogel describes Ocean Storms (0506) as a confident blue-gray, part of the company’s Color Essentials Collection. “This muted blue combines the best of two trends: the popularity of blue that denotes classic styling along with the appeal of restful gray that delivers easy living and modern flair,” said AgarStudelska. “Ocean Storms is a versatile choice as Color of the Year for its confident presence, yet simple style.”
Ocean Storms can triumph in both interior and exterior settings, she continued. For interiors, this restful blue delivers a modern vibe and is a great color to showcase furniture, artwork and accents without overwhelming either the accessories or the visitors. Blues in all tones have continued to trend, she added, but gray is also on the rise, and Ocean Storms brings these trends ashore in a tidal wave of one great color. For exterior settings, it is great as the central color and pairs well with white, cream and soft gray as well as charcoal for trim and accents. Exterior colors have been moving toward deep, rich tones and this hue fits this movement, said Agar-Studelska. Diamond Vogel’s runners up, in no particular order… Resting Place (0462): A soft mint described as “nostalgia meets clean and simple.” A mid-century hue that is calming and balanced, creating a restful, quiet escape. To Bee or not To Bee
Dunn-Edwards Paints has some buzz around its 2017 Color of the Year, […the envelope please…] Honey Glow, a warm, golden yellow with brown undertones. “This is a great color use to to make a bold statement,” said Sara McLean, color expert for Dunn-Edwards. “Whether it’s applied to every wall or featured in accessories, the cheerful spirit that radiates from this color will re-energize any room.” Since yellow and honey remind people of bees, the company is using its COTY to help the hive thrive. Ten percent of sales of paint tinted in Honey Glow will go to HoneyLove.org, a nonprofit organization that encourages urban beekeeping and educates people about making their garden bee friendly by avoiding pesticides, providing water and shelter, and adding pollinator-friendly plants. McLean selected Honey Glow after extensive research on color trends in everything from pop culture and fashion to world events and local street culture. “Honey Glow embodies the trend toward the warming of all

colors—from neutrals to non-neutrals,” she explained. While it’s a bright yellow—and we know that yellows can go all kind of crazy if used with impunity —McLean has great ideas for incorporating this color into your hive—er…home. For example, put this color on an accent wall, paired with white or gray, then bring in pillows, throws and other accessories in a Honey Glow color. “People who love to travel and collect artifacts from around the world will be attracted to this global color. It can pretty much match with everything from earthy, neutral palettes or colors like chocolate, red, gray, green and orange,” she said. Plus, it’s got more people talking about color that might not otherwise. “The National Honey Board put it on its homepage and in its newsletter…and several other honey producer organizations are talking about Honey Glow,” said a spokesperson for Dunn-Edwards. dunnedwards.com
Not so Simple
It wouldn’t be hard to predict that Benjamin Moore would go darker in 2017, seeing that its 2016 COTY was Simply White. The past three years have seen Benjamin Moore look on the lighter side, but there are some darker times ahead—at least on your color card. “For the past few years, we surrounded ourselves with lighter, cooler hues,” said Hannah Yeo, Benjamin Moore
Above, right, left: Benjamin Moore’s Shadow in various types of light. Top Left: From Benjamin Moore’s Color Trends 2017: Stormy Monday, (2112-50), Regal Select, Eggshell. color and design expert “We cleansed the palette with Breath of Fresh Air (806) in 2014, brought the outside in with Guilford Green (HC-116) in 2015, and last year simplified home design with Simply White (OC-117). Now we’re ready for the bold stroke of color.” These things take time—you wouldn’t want to tell your customers that someone just woke up and decided a Color of the Year over a bowl of Frosty-O’s. so you can tell your customers it took about a year of research to confirm that colors are generally shifting toward deeper and warmer hues. “Deep violets in particular are prevalent across various design fields including fine arts and fashion, so we selected […the envelope again, please…] Shadow (2117-30) as being the most influential color for 2017,” said Yeo. Interestingly enough, “Shadow” also provoked a conversation on light, she said. Room lighting, outdoor lighting…it all influences how a color looks on a wall. That’s why what looks great in the store looks like dishwater at home. “We know that many consumers and designers struggle with this,” Yeo acknowledged. “To help them, our color card presents photos that follow the journey of light throughout one home. From morning to evening, you see how we selected color in accordance with the light pathway.” But it’s not the only great color as we head into ’17. As part of the Color Trends 2017 palette, Shadow looks

good practically where ever you put it and has a lot of good company, said Yeo. “This deep, luscious hue works in traditional homes, modern lofts and everything in between,” she said. “You can dress it up with other colors for a formal space or you can keep it modern by pairing it with a soft white. From pales to deeps, warms to cools, Shadow, accompanied by 22 other colors in Benjamin Moore’s Color Trends 2017, can be used alone or in endless harmonious combination to complement many architectural and design styles.” There’s even more to it than that. Knowing you’ve painted with the color of the year could be rewarding intellectually, but what about emotionally? How does this particular COTY make you feel long after the “envelope please” is torn up and tossed away? Pretty good, says Yeo. “Shadow is the master of ambiance, capturing a sense of mystery, beauty and allure. It is an amazing color that can have a violet cast in some light, act as almost a deep neutral in other lighting.” From here, she suggests, put your color in a great quality paint to show it off to best effect. “Shadow is great for anyone looking for a color that can instantly create mood, and there’s no better product than Benjamin Moore’s Aura to show off the rich, beautiful colors. With Benjamin Moore’s exclusive Color Lock technology, Aura delivers the ultimate performance for brilliant, rich and everlasting color.” benjaminmoore.com

If anybody’s kids play kettle drums and trumpets, here’s the time to put them on parade! “We’re excited to announce the 2017 COTY winner the respondents picked [‌the envelope once again, please‌] Kettleman (KM5818),â€? said Mary Lawlor, CMG and Kelly-Moore’s manager of color marketing. “Kettlemen goes with gray, which is coming into it own as a popular neutral.,â€? she said. “As gray continues to be a go-to neutral, Kettlemen’s subtle depth and complexity doesn’t disappoint as it has the ability to make a dramatic impact on both interiors and exteriors. It works well with all wood tones, warmer neutrals, whites, and trending home dĂŠcor items. It’s also a great background against which to try a color-pop accent or two.â€? When It Dozen Matter
If one’s good, what about 12? Totally, if it’s donuts, and yep even if it’s a color of the year, even though we’ll need a few extra envelopes for this one. The color experts at Valspar have curated a collection of 12 colors to help consumers choose the perfect paint for revitalizing their homes, the company tells us. The colors are fresh yet familiar and inspired by a range of lifestyle influences from culture, fashion, design, nature and technology. The dozen “it” hues reflect key prevailing trends: sustainable and simplistic living, spirituality, and self-improvement. “Choosing a color for a project can be challenging when options are endless,” said Sue Kim, Valspar Color Strategist. “So, we’ve curated a collection of 12 livable hues to give consumers choice and confidence in discovering and expressing their own style.” Four of the colors are highlighted below, along with Kim’s descriptions: Silver Bonnet: This warm stone gray is a must-have neutral that encompasses the timeless and enduring beauty of natural materials. Reminiscent of wet cement, cut limestone and river pebbles, this hue is a strong foundation for any style. The warmth in this gray gives it versatility to pair with any color scheme. Dear Melissa: An airy, luminous yellow comes to light as new technological innovations elevate sensory stimulation. “This color can fill a room with light and awaken all five senses.” Black Currant: This deep violet black has a powerful influence, symbolizing the mainstreaming of meditation

and mindfulness as a way to get in touch with our inner senses. The violet undertone in this midnight black gives it a distinct personality—dark, decorative and a bit moody. Rock Solid: Soft silver sage enjoys resurgence as the movement to de-clutter and pare down is in play. The hue is versatile, reliable and reimagined for living simply, yet satisfied. Sage green and silvery gray blend together in one of the most versatile and beautiful neutrals—perfect for today’s popular warm wood floors.
Four from Farrow
British craftsmen in paint and paper Farrow & Ball heralded the return of color in the home as it announced its key shades for spring 2017. It has chosen colors in response to a public that is more confident in its decorating choices, with colors encapsulating both dramatic, vivid hues and more understated, subtle tones. The four colors are Radicchio, Studio Green, Hay and All White, a color quartet with an enduring appeal that remains comfortingly familiar despite being used in surprising combinations, says the company. From the timeless, bygone feel of Hay and Studio Green, to the vivacious tones of Radicchio and the counterbalance of pure, uncomplicated All White, the colors have a refined quality that works wonder-

fully in both contemporary and traditional homes. To gain a better understanding, Farrow & Ball describes each color more fully, more intellectually, and more emotionally—how it works and plays with others, and how it makes you feel. Radicchio Pink has been at the forefront of decorating for the last year and there is now a natural progression to stronger reds, with their spirit of bold optimism. It feels exuberant, romantic and sensual, rather than clean or graphic, due to its complex underlying blue tone. impact and depth. Radicchio should always be the dominant force of this decorative scheme, while the greys remain an intrinsic, but more recessive element, so rooms remain happy and vital. There is something almost defiant about the use of botanic Studio Green on walls instead of the ubiquitous charcoal darks. It is unapologetically clubby and has a fantastically timeless old world quality, but can be used in the most modern of rooms. The sober colour reflects nature, especially when combined with creams such as New White, Farrow’s Cream and Pointing, all of which blend seamlessly to create rooms that feel calm and serene. Studio Green walls not only create an alluring retreat, but also provide a sanctuary. They contribute to a feeling of both harmony and security, proving that the colour is both aesthetic and protective. Understated Hay feels soft and familiar. Its quiet quality creates rooms that have a hushed atmosphere as well as an unmatched depth and gentleness. It is not a hot or sunny yellow—although it becomes more raw in bright light—but rather an aged, whimsical tone with an underlying green. The color is best counterbalanced with the tonally harmonious Oval Room Blue and Set-
PPG’s Color of the Year, Violet Verbena, is shown as both the main color, as an accent, and paired with accessories. At one time a purple hue might have been an odd choice for COTY, but not any more! “Consumers are still in search of restful, calming tones, but are also more open to new attitudes and experiences,” said Dee Schlooter, PPG senior color marketing manager.

ting Plaster to create life-affirming rooms reminiscent of a midcentury palette. Delicate Wimborne White could then be used as a warm, reflective neutral on the ceiling. Although this combination of colours feels rather eclectic in nature, it creates spaces that feel established as well as being fun and easy to live with. All White is devoid of both color and association. It has no pigment and creates an uncomplicated feel which is naturally fresh, but not stark or ‘brilliant’. The key to this look is to create a mood of stillness and calm by layering different whites, and only whites, together. Great White, Cabbage White, and Strong White, with their different nuances of colour, can be used in any combination with All White to create subtle decorative surprises. They also create the perfect backdrop for both art and natural materials. These seemingly simple colors evoke a complex response when combined in this way. farrow-ball.com
