VISION The vision of Spiller’s Wharf is to create a food driven environment where it tackles the issues of health inequalities in Newcastle particularly on dietary intakes and mental health. The design intent endeavours to raise aspirations that will act as a cultural, leisure and health magnet in the neighbouring residential and as a city as a whole. Furthermore the intent is to promote community cohesion and social inclusion through different mode of participation.

Convert the heavy tarmac environment into productive raised beds and green spaces.

After the harvesting months, the raised beds are removed and transform the space that caters play, events and activities for the neighbourhoods

Lessen the risk of large puddles after torrential rain. Increases biodiversity and water rentention in the area.

Creating networks and community of people who works in the area such as volunteers, business workers and etc and creating more active frontages for different recreational activities, social and functions.

Mixed used residential area acts as continuity of housing from Terry Farrell’s masterplan of the Quayside. Community hub provides an area where residents and other residential areas can collaborate on shared activities. Leisure hub provides economic activities and treat as an treat as part of the Quayside. Decking area is a platform where residents and visitors relax and do recreational activities such as fishing.

Promanade is a primary route that caters pedestrian and cycle path. Decking is another option where pedestrians can walk by. Bus stops are implemented on the main access points as visitors walk near to their specific establishment. Cycle shed is implemented to entice vistors to cycle more.

Heavy implementation of enclosed spaces to promote closeknitedness and enhances passive surveilance and ‘eyes on the streets’. Enclosed spaces deters the formation of anti social behaviour and theft LIMITATIONS Width of each building at the northern part of the site are narrow to provide buffer space for the promanade. Less provision to design due to width restriction particularly in the northern part of the site.

Frontages are facing towards the River Tyne to enhance residents and visitors experience due to the river, interesting facade, decking, public engagement and vegetation In the souther area, the frontages will be facing to each other to develop a sense of enclosure and security and detterance for anti social behaviour. Some buildings will have double frontages and made of glass to make sure that the promenade is well looked after.

Site is bounded by green corridor alongside with the promenade and acts as a spine to link each of the proposed hubs. The residential blocks will have stronger visual permeability of the landmarks. Heavy provision of allotments and growing hub to raise awareness of growing food. Minor provision of retail, stalls, restaurant, artist studios, health care facilities, childcare, to support the new communities.

The ground floor of each residential blocks will have designated commercial spaces and office spaces. The residential parking is located at the underground of each residential blocks. The commercial spaces in the ground floor is considered as a ‘string of experiences’ for visitors from the Quayside leading to the leisure hub. Provisions of sitting areas, urban play and vegetation is fully integrated in the promenade to entice visitors to walk to the leisure centre.

Economic provisions such as stalls are situated in the plaza to emphasise passive surveillance and engagement thus creating bustling environment. Enhancing sense of security and safety and minimises the risk of any criminal activities. Cyclist who came from the nothern part of the UK who uses the sustrans route and other nearby residential estates are welcomed with nice enclosed atmosphere.

This infrastructure will be taller and act as a magnet and a navigational tool to draw people to the leisure hub. -winter garden and hydroponics facilities with predominantly glass infrastructure.

This infrastructure will be the first building people will see from St Lawrence rd and people from winter garden/hydr ponics facilities. This building is wide enough to shelter the grey area of the industrial zone.

• Residential area will enjoy the sceneries with great visual permeability to the landmarks. • However, the further away from the residential area the lesser extent that landmarks are visible. To resolve this issue, the architecture and the colour scheme of the proposed buildings should reflect on the buildings found in the Quayside which are beige coloured bricks with a modern twist of architecture.

Crops are susceptible to frost during the winter season and not productive at all. This area will transform into urban play, hold events, arts installations and a continuation of market area from leisure hub. The raised beds are safely stored in the workshop and placed back in the allotments in spring for sowing.

Diagrams show the relationship of each building and how each building interconnected to each other. • Each buildings are complimentary in respect to food movements to ease logistics and transforming a raw material into customer’s dish. MECHANICS The community center is the main operation centre which host management of volunteers and packaging of its surplus. It is responsible of outsourcing materials such as seeds and fertilisers for profit generating operations such as hydroponics facilities, raised beds allotments and aquatic gardens. These profit generating operations are dependent on workshop facilities and volunteering and recruitment from community centre to work on the site. Since the community centre has the responsibility for the surplus, it distributes it surplus to the stalls, the food hub , food related education and other parts of the city for profits. The restaurants and education shared a symbiotic relationship as students will be learning their trade in the restaurants and learn theory in the educational facilities.

• People who walked from Byker, Heaton, Walker and other residential areas and cyclist who came from Northern part of the UK will be welcomed with a bustling enclosed environment with stalls, restaurant, urban play environment with strong visual permeability of the River Tyne.

• Long corridor of green productive spaces with raised beds during early spring to late autumn. • During winter, this space will hold events, art installations and continuation the market space in the leisure centre as crops are susceptible with frost and stunted growth due to lack of sunlight and temperature.

2. View along the growing hub, workshop and daycare centre

Minor provision of shops in the ground floor of the residential blocks. • Densed greeneries, sitting area, urban play are provided in the promenade. • Strong visual permeability of Newcastle’s landmarks.

3. View along the mixed use residential area in the northern part of the site

These are the materials will be used on the surfaces. They are primarily ‘earthy colours’ to reflect back on the industrial era in the Quayside.
