Arbutus corridor railway r
Naoibh O’Connor
noconnor@vancourier.com
Mayor Gregor Robertson and Jerry Dobrovolny, the city’s general manager of engineering, symbolically removed the first spike from the track along the Arbutus Corridor last week. It marked the start of the rail removal process and kicked off a complex city planning project that will ultimately see the nine-kilometre stretch transformed into public greenspace for walking and cycling. Space will also be reserved for a possible streetcar in the future. “Only 15,000 more to go,” Dobrovolny joked, holding up the first spike. In fact, there are generally four spikes per railway tie, and there are 14,993 railway ties, so that would translate to approximately 59,972 spikes being removed. In total, 8.8 kilometres of rail are being removed — 809 tons or 53,962 feet of railway. Just over 280 tons of other track material will also be taken away. The work, which started at the north end, begins
only three months after the city announced it had purchased the property from Canadian Pacific railway. CP crews are responsible for removing the rail line from the corridor, while city crews will remove it from 39 street crossings and five lane crossings. The city will also be grading the route to create a temporary asphalt path for the public to use in the short-term. The path and near-term safety improvements will cost $2.7 million. CP expects its part of the job, which involves heavy equipment, will proceed at a rate of about one kilometre per week. The city, meanwhile, is staffing the Arbutus Greenway project office with a project manager, a development officer, a communications manager, a planning analyst, an engineering project manager, a transportation design lead, a landscape architect, a streets design engineer and a project coordinator. The team will be based in existing space on city hall grounds. Project office costs are tagged at $3 million.
Staff will hold public consultation meetings and workt ‘ on the vision and design for the greenway. When it’s t completed, the design pro- c posal will be brought before g i council. On Friday, Robertson b called the rail removal “an b exciting next step for our o F city.” w “We expect this to be extremely popular both with a residents and visitors to Van- t couver,” he said. “The work i is getting underway and we anticipate having a greenway p in the near term that people w t can use, that people can b walk, run, cycle, walk the c dog [on]. We are looking to have some very modest c facilities initially in terms of m benches and lighting, but, of p course, we’re embarking on t a big consultation process t and engaging the community in deciding the future of the Arbutus Greenway. In the meantime, we want to make sure it’s usable for residents and visitors to Vancouver — they can enjoy this new, incredible asset to the city.” Dobrovolny calls the greenway project a “huge” initiative that will evolve in stages.

removal starts “I don’t know how many times I can use the phrase ‘this is a once-in-a-generation or a once-in-a-career city building project.’ We’ve got the viaducts, which falls into that same category, but yeah, it’s unheard of to be getting almost 10 acres of land that runs from the Fraser River to False Creek with some amazing vistas and views on the route,” he told the Courier in an earlier interview. “It’s primarily a transportation corridor — that’s what we’ve purchased and that’s what the zoning is, but in addition to walking, cycling and a future streetcar line, we’re looking at making it a demonstration project around lighting, so that we’re not contributing to light pollution. We want

it to have lots of light and be safe and comfortable for all ages and abilities of people. But at the same time, we don’t want it to feel like stadium lighting.” Dobrovolny said there will be a strong cultural component given the Arbutus Greenway starts from First Nation land and travels through areas that are very important to the Musqueam and Squamish nations. “We’re looking at ways we can incorporate that into the final project as well,” he said, adding, “There are migrating bird pathways and opportunities for public art.” Dobrovolny expects the vision and design process will take 12 to 18 months. It will include identifying if there will be excess land. If
there is, a separate process will be launched about what do with that land after the design is completed. Formal public consultation for the greenway will begin this fall. It’s estimated the project will cost between $25 and $35 million, although a detailed cost estimate cannot be calculated until the design work is finished. “People are really excited about the project. Expectations are very, very high,” Dobrovolny said. “We want to do some blue sky visioning in terms of what we could do, but then also start to bring it down to look at what the tradeoffs would be. The fundamental that’s required is that it be a transportation corridor.” @naoibh

Making a case for park space Megan Stewart
mstewart@vancourier.com
This spring, the Vancouver Park Board announced two new parks for Vancouver, one downtown and another on the Fraser River where an emerging neighbourhood is expected to welcome 10,000 new inhabitants to 130 acres of once industrial shoreline on a still very active river. That burgeoning community south of Marine Drive is the East Fraser Lands, or the River District as it’s being marketed. The park board is promising 25 acres of park land, and Vancouver landscape architects at space2place are tasked with developing 7.8 of those acres over four parks. Their ideas and $840,000 budget won out over seven other bids. The work should be done by the end of 2018. Jeff Cutler opened the firm 15 years ago. “People are starting to become more interested in public spaces and ask more,” he said.
Jeff Cutler, the principal landscape architect at Vancouver design firm space2place, is part of the team that will develop four new parks on the Fraser River. PHOTO DAN TOULGOET What kind of statement do you want to make in this growing neighbourhood?
I don’t have a pre-conceived statement. We go through a discovery phase at the beginning of a project that will include looking at what the site is, from ecological and hydraulic… One important aspect of this park is that Vancouver really doesn’t have a lot of opportunity to connect with the Fraser River. There is a lot of connection with the ocean but not the Fraser River, and the city has almost turned its back on the river. That is one really unique thing that is special about this community. It’s really a river-oriented community. I think this park is going to have to fulfill a number of different roles. It’s a blank canvas.
One thing that is starting to happen now — and I know a lot of Vancouver Greenest City guidelines and other policies are looking at is how do we start to integrate nature back into cities… I think this project has a real opportunity to demonstrate some of the potential of how we can have more natural space within cities. There are lots of published benefits for people who have exposure to natural environments — you are healthier, you are calmer and have less anxiety. When you design playgrounds, do you consider what skills children stand to develop?
Playgrounds are often focused on active play but there are many kinds of play: social play, creative play, fantasy play and then there is natural play. So, if you think of play in that context, the play equipment is one part of it but there are many other types of things you can do. You really try to create more of a playscape… a landscape that has some play elements in it, something that really tries to encourage children to bring their
imagination to the space a little more. What piece of public land would you most like to work on?
There are not a lot of those kinds of projects that are being developed so there is not a lot of opportunity to get those projects, but I would be intrigued in doing a smaller, very urban square or plaza.
What is an example of a public place that makes poor use of its space?
One project that I would say has some real potential but feels cut off from the street is Cathedral Square. As you walk along, it’s very urban and very downtown, but it doesn’t feel like it is part of the public life. You don’t feel drawn into it.
It feels like private land, closed off for unknown owners.
It has huge potential, but I think a big part of it doesn’t feel welcoming. You have to work your way past the barriers. I guess it’s elevated a little bit and is a challenging space. People in this city do love their parks.
One thing in Vancouver I’ve been encouraged to see over the last number of years is that people are asking more of their public spaces and are expecting more… There is a whole network of parks, that over time will start to be renovated and I would encourage people to participate in that process: voice your opinion and say what you want that park to be… Especially as you add more and more density and bring more people around here, there is not a lot of outdoor space and with so many people living in condos, the parks are becoming people’s yards in some ways. I think there is a huge opportunity for parks to be doing more in the city. This interview was edited and condensed. For a longer version, go to vancourier.com. @MHStewart

General Brock elementary in running for playground grant
Bianca Chan
Biancaschan95@gmail.com
A Vancouver elementary school is one step closer to receiving a grant that will fund a new playground. After three years of drawnout Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings, proposal strategies and fundraising events, General Brock elementary is in the running as one of five play areas in B.C. to move into the final round of the BCAA Play Here Grant Competition. General Brock, the only competitor from Vancouver proper, now relies on the public to vote them to victory — and a revitalization worth up to $100,000. “There’s nothing left of the intermediate playground but a horrible slab of concrete with gouges in it from where the playground once stood,” said Dani Conrad, a parent of a second grade student at General Brock. In April, BCAA asked British Columbians to nominate play areas throughout the province that are in need of rejuvenation. Earlier this month, five playgrounds from Burnaby, Vancouver Island, Thompson-Okanagan, Kootenay and Vancouver were selected. The goal of the Play Here initiative? To give B.C. children a safer place to play. In light of a lack of funding from the Vancouver school board and the provincial government,
the Brock PAC has raised $20,000 over the past three years, turning to local families, corporate sponsors and fundraising events. However, they are still tens of thousands of dollars away from their $90,000 goal. “If we won the grant, we would be able to put a playground in now, not in X amount of years when we fundraise enough money for it,” Conrad said. The money the PAC already raised would go to other needs, she added, such as paying for the Grade 7 graduation and subsidizing field trips. Having anticipated the 2014 and 2015 demolitions of the intermediate kids’ playground and half of the primary kids’ playground, the PAC submitted a proposal to the VSB for a new playground back in 2012. The $90,000 would foot the bill for all the new play structures and equipment, the necessary labour, safety surfacing and concrete seating rails. As the school board and provincial government are stuck between a rock and a budget shortfall, it is up to the rest of the community to finance and replace the torn down playgrounds. The Brock playground is not alone in this problem. In the past four years alone, other schools within the VSB, such as Hastings, Waverley, John Norquay and Simon Fraser Elementary, Champlain Heights and
Tillicum Annex have also relied on donations to fund new playgrounds. VSB chairperson Mike Lombardi points his finger to the Ministry of Education, which he says has left the funds needed to replace the dismantled play structures out of the budget. “As you know, we have no funding,” Lombardi said, noting the $21.8-million shortfall. “This is a good example of the underfunding of the VSB — we can’t even afford even the basic resources to reinstate these playgrounds that we’ve dismantled,” Lombardi said. He also noted the VSB will offer assistance in the construction of the new structures at cost while continuing to ask the Ministry of Education for an increase in the annual $10-million grant. Since General Brock is a neighbourhood school and has a small student population, which Conrad estimates at 220 kids, Brock is up against the odds since the other competitors may have larger extended networks to reach out to. The public can vote for their favourite play area or proposal at bcaaplayhere. com until June 29. General Brock is asking for supplementary support and cash donations to be sent to the school’s office at 4860 Main St., with cheques made out to “Brock PAC.” @biancachan_

Religious intolerance led to mass PACIFIC SPIRIT
People of faith need to look at realworld impacts of their theology

The mass murder of people in a gay club in Orlando Sunday has drawn grief and mourning. It has also enflamed discussion of gun rights versus gun control, of homophobia, of Islamic extremism and of the potential for a backlash against innocent American Muslims, as if these issues were not among the most prevalent topics of discussion already. Those issues are being parsed in detail, but I want to home in on the role of religion and homosexuality, not only in this case but more generally. Orlando, to me, is a clarion call that, no matter what your ancient book might say, people of faith — every faith —

need to look at real-world impacts of their theology. Seddique Mateen, the father of Omar Mateen, who murdered at least 49 people and wounded more than 50, didn’t wait for the bodies to cool before declaring that “God himself will punish those involved in homosexuality.” Untimely as the father’s remarks were, they actually reflect a weirdly “live and let live” approach, which is that it is not for us to judge, but for God. Still, it is easy to see how a son raised among such ideas might believe he was performing God’s work in mass murdering scores of gay people. This is not a theoretical connection. Mateen Senior raises an issue I’ve wondered about: If religious people are so certain that God is going to punish sinners in the afterlife, why are many of them, including his son Omar, so committed to punishing them in this life? Does it reflect a degree of uncertainty, a fear that the retributive God they believe in may
not exist? Or that God may not be as zealous as the believer might wish? The answer, usually, is some statement, couched in professions of love, that the believers are trying to steer the perceived sinner in the right direction while there is still time. Shortly after being elected, Pope Francis said of homosexual people, “Who am I to judge?” This seemed revolutionary. If it is not for the head of the Roman Catholic church to judge, who on earth is to judge? And that seems to have been his point. For those who believe in a higher power, and who contend that God sets out moral rules, then meting out rewards or reprimands really should be the purview of God, not humankind, shouldn’t it? In a clarification, however, the Pope let it be known that he was mostly saying in different words what well-intentioned people have said all along, that we should “love the sinner but hate the sin.”

murder in Orlando The idea that maniacs will differentiate between theological nuance and hatred of perceived sinners is optimistic, particularly given the barbarity with which some religious people speak of homosexuality. We like to say that every religion shares values that are fundamentally good, and when someone behaves barbarically in the name of a religion, we declare that they are not representative; that they are, in fact, not of that religion at all. Every time an Islamic extremist perpetrates an atrocity, we are assured they do not represent Islam. Westboro Baptist church, we add, are not real Christians. To this, I might ask, if a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu or anyone else kills people — and claims it is in the name of their God — who am I to judge otherwise? When ISIS drops gay people head first from tall buildings, it is because their interpretation of Islam says this is the right thing to do. When the Texas lieutenant-governor tweets a Christian proverb implying that the 49 dead gay people got what they deserved because a “man reaps what he sows,” it suggests he believes Christianity justifies mass murder. Who am I to declare that their version of Islam or Christianity is inauthentic? I mean, I can condemn their words and actions, but I am in no position to contradict their professions of faith. The problem is, these acts of violence do not occur in a vacuum from religious teachings about homosexuality. It is in a literal reading of ancient texts that lie the seeds for the violence perpetrated last weekend.
Ah, says the fundamentalist, so you acknowledge that the ancient texts condemn homosexuality. Yes, and they contain much else that evolved humankind has abandoned. Call me a moral relativist, that trump card of the dogmatists; I’ll wear it with pride. Contemporary Christians, Muslims, Jews and others by necessity pick and choose from their holy texts. Unless your everyday resembles A.J. Jacobs’ in his book The Year of Living Biblically, you’ve already made a lot of compromises with your holy texts. Let this just be another one. Anything written thousands of years ago will have components that are inconsistent with the present and are consequently ignored. Leviticus is filled with proscriptions ignored by Jews, Christians and Muslims who ostensibly view it as a holy book. Yet this one bugbear, homosexuality, is where so many choose to make a stand. Omar Mateen made his stand at Pulse based on his professed religious beliefs. And while so many Muslims, Christians, Jews and others will condemn the violence, they will also continue to teach the underlying principles that inspired it. Religious intolerance of both homosexuality and homosexuals led to mass murder last weekend and to so much pain and violence across the centuries. These ideas have no place in our contemporary world, no matter where they are written. “Love the sinner, hate the sin” is merely a waystation on the bloody road to Orlando. @Pat604Johnson

Opinion ALLEN GARR COLUMNIST

Vancouver Park Board... cut down those trees!
W
hen forestry specialist Bill Stephen joined the Vancouver Park Board staff back in 1991, he realized the board had made a huge mistake. When the city’s urban forest strategy was in its infancy a decade earlier, they planted some 12,000 Linden trees on Vancouver streets and in its parks. They had no idea the variety they planted (Tilia Euchlora) was notorious for attracting massive numbers of aphids from May through August.
Realizing the problems created by Linden trees, the park board stopped planting them and that’s been the case for the past 16 years. Also worth noting: The drier the weather, the more abundant the aphids. These aphids exude a sticky liquid called “honeydew,” which rains down on pavement, parked cars, lawn furniture, patios, laundry out to dry and plants. If there is a breeze, it will blow through open windows. Cars and other inanimate objects require regular washing. Honeydewcoated plants, both annuals and perennials, eventually die. The liquid falling on leaves or blossoms shed by the trees causes them to stick to anything they touch, including your shoes. The insects and their droppings also attract a large number of wasps, which regularly sting kids.
PHOTO DAN TOULGOET
The honeydew also promotes the growth of a black sooty mould, which can trigger allergies and asthmatic attacks. I refer you to page 341 of Volume 9, Number 5, of the 2008 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology. Realizing the problems created by Linden trees, the park board stopped planting them and that’s been the case for the past 16 years. But, you may well ask, did the park board staff, in realizing the error of their ways, recommend the removal of those troublesome trees? Nope. Citizens complained to their elected officials, including a Mrs. Movana Ramar with respect to nuisance trees at 46th Avenue and St. George Street, according to the board’s December 2010 minutes. Did that move them to take those trees down? Nope. At this point in the city’s history and its “greenest city strategy,” promoted by Mayor Gregor Robertson, removing a city tree required more effort than gaining dispensation from the Pope. Staff told the board they were spraying insecticide (soapy water) and dispatching buckets of ladybugs to try and control the aphid infestation. And did that do the trick? Not really. The irony, of course, is while the board tenaciously held on to these troublesome trees, the urban canopy was being devastated with the full blessing of the city. As my colleague, Mike Howell, reported in March, the number of trees removed on private property between 1995 and 2013 would be enough to cover an area the same size as Stanley Park. Other citizens plagued by the admitted “serious mistake” of Linden trees planted on their boulevard were given short shrift.
That includes Jennifer Aarestad and her neighbour Lyz Sayer, both residents on the 800-block of West 15th Avenue. Along with the majority of homeowners on their block, they have been attempting to lobby both the park board and the city for the past five years to have the Linden trees in front of their houses removed. Their houses are on short lots, which make their front yards effectively their back yards, and their front yards are in the line of fire of all those Linden trees and those goop-deploying, plant-destroying, car-coating, sooty mould-promoting aphids making their lives miserable. They put together a slide show and invited park board officials to attend a meeting at VanDusen Gardens. Officials came, but there was no real resolution. They asked for a meeting with the mayor. They were refused. They offered to pay
whatever it would cost to remove the Linden trees and replace them with a more compatible tree. Nothing. Then on Tuesday morning, following an inquiry from the Courier to park board chairperson John Coupar, including the fact that this was a ridiculous situation and allowing it to persist would be exposed, I got a call from park board manager Malcolm Bromley. Bromley assured me a meeting will be held for the residents of that blighted block within the month. Then the offer will be made to take down and replace the Lindens in two stages, with every second tree going first, including the trees in front of the Aarestad and Sayer homes. And the park board will pick up the bill. Thank you very much. It couldn’t happen soon enough. @allengarr

Stop to it Re: “Ding-a-ling of the week,” May 26. I noticed an anonymous comment in the “Ding-a-ling of the Week” column headed “Don’t walk in front of me.” The writer was complaining that pedestrians walk in front of him across the intersection at East 10th and Commercial Drive when the pedestrian/cyclist-activated green light is on for crossing of Commercial Drive. He contends that the green light gives him the right of way over pedestrians going north or south along Commercial Drive. With respect,

I’m pretty sure this cyclist is making the same erroneous assumption that I’ve seen countless automobile drivers make, that the green light overrides the existing stop sign. It does not. Both car drivers and cyclists are still obligated to STOP at the stop sign and proceed only when the intersection is clear. Pedestrians are NOT controlled by the red traffic light, nor do they have a stop sign. I’ve given up arguing this point with car drivers, because it is just too dangerous. I’m appalled to see that I now have to watch out for cyclists too! Please can you look into this and print a retraction? Janice Doyle, Vancouver

esource Works Society, a local organization dedicated to providing the community with fact-based information on the resource development sector in British Columbia, is gearing up for their first annual fundraiser: Race for Resources. “We’re a non-profit,” explains Barinder Rasode, Director of Social Development for the Resource Works Society, “and this is our one and only fundraiser.” Initially, a group brainstormed around a creative event that would catch people’s imagination, support a local industry, and bring in much needed money. “People’s charitable calendars tend to be filled with gala dinners or lunches,” Barinder says, “and we wanted something different, something a little more creative. We’ve partnered with the Hastings Race Track and on June 25th 2016, from 12:30pm to 5pm we’ll be holding a day at the races event.” Women are encouraged to wear their finest summer dresses and hats or fascinators and men will be wearing their summer suits. Tickets cost $100 and include hors d’oeuvres, a buffet lunch, and two tickets for the alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverage of your choice. “It’s going to be a fun day,” Barinder laughs. “Plus, the horse racing industry
has a long history in B.C. and, like many other sectors, it has taken a hit with the advent and popularity of technology. People can watch horse racing at home or on any mobile device, or watch bigger tracks in other cities. We want to support the industry as it creates a lot of jobs and is important to our community.” All the money raised is invested into the Resource Works Society to help fund research and create factbased information for the public and community leaders on the contribution of responsible resource development and extraction. the neighbourhood. Pedestrians — young, old and in between — navigated the narrow sidewalk, weaving through the gauntlet of strollers, bicycles and storefront produce bins. Behind them, restaurants geared up for the evening, windows and doors cracked open to entice diners. Above it all, the brick facade of the old Van East movie theatre was still recognizable despite the fact that it was now dotted with condo balconies, each showing signs of actual human life within: a potted plant here, a string of lanterns there. It was a lovely scene. It was vibrant. It was the exact opposite of what I feared would happen to the block when, years before, it was announced the old theatre would close and clear the way for the inevitable influx of condos. I am not a big fan of condos. It’s not that I’m against density or height, or that I don’t appreciate the contribution they make to the city’s housing stock while mitigating suburban sprawl. What I don’t like about them is what they represent. To me, condos aren’t just a housing option — they are the symbol of Vancouver’s housing crisis. They are the currency by which developers and politicians peddle wealth and influence; they are the soulless, often architecturally bland privatization of spaces once accessible to the public; they are the manifestation of inequality as more and more families find
Are you not hearing clearly when a group of people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything being said, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, the Audéo V hearing aid has been designed specifically to understand speech in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in group situations, especially in restaurants. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that determine when you hear things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory centre of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.
themselves stuck in studio shoeboxes with nowhere else to go. But even I can admit that, done right, dense multi-family developments can enhance neighbourhood character — even save it. This, of course, is not a popular stance in much of the city where the mere suggestion of density begets a knee-jerk opposition from neighbourhood associations largely led by grey-haired owners of coveted singlefamily homes. The argument against development — against condos — is always the same: these projects are too big/too tall/too boxy and will be detrimental to neighbourhood character. Such is the case on the other end of Commercial Drive, where a development partnership proposal between Boffo and the Kettle Society has given rise to a spate of No Tower signs that have proliferated on lawns like dandelions. Such was the case a couple months back when speaker after speaker approached Vancouver city council decrying the city’s proposed Affordable Housing Ownership plan, a pilot project which would give moderate-income households help buying homes and outlines some arterials on the West Side for condo-style development. According to the NIMBY contingents, these projects are outright assaults on neighbourhood character. That’s rather interesting, since I’ve always thought the character of Commercial Drive lay in its eclectic
mix of people, not the height of its buildings. The Kettle Society development, measuring 12 storeys at its tallest (not incidentally one storey shorter than the Adanac Towers apartment complex across the street), would allow a vital social services society that has been in the neighbourhood for 40 years to remain in place and provide 30 units of supportive housing. It would also include 200 market housing units — and notably desperately needed three-bedroom condos — to allow more people to stay or buy in the neighbourhood, at least in principle. Over on the West Side, it is the loss of character — of kids playing on the sidewalks and filling local schools, of neighbours chatting amicably over fences — that residents are mourning as they tell of empty houses awaiting the wrecking ball. But the way to preserve life in these neighbourhoods isn’t through a moratorium on demolition and development as many residents who spoke to council have suggested. It is in the addition of the very thing they fear. It’s time we realized we’re not getting through this housing crisis without letting go of our attachment to traditional residential neighbourhoods. Even if we do manage to curb foreign demand on houses in Vancouver, it is highly unlikely prices will come down enough to make them a viable next step for average homebuyers. Continued next page

With Audéo V
The Audéo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech. Developed by Swiss audiologists the Audéo V hearing aid is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can trial the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. During your FREE hearing test, our Hearing Care Professionals will determine how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role the technology called “Autosense OS” plays. This technology can recognize where the person being spoken to is located and can amplify only his or her voice,
while ambient noise is reduced. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing aid can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds, seamlessly adjusting to the listening situation. According to Swiss researchers, this can significantly improve speech comprehension, especially in conversation for the right candidates. UBC THUNDERBOTS At YVR, we have a strong culture of innovation. It is one of the key reasons we are able to be a successful airport, and be a strong source of pride for our community. This is why we are proud to support UBC Thunderbots, an innovative student-driven engineering team, through our community investment program. The students design, prototype and build soccer-playing robots. The Thunderbots will be competing in Germany at the end of June in Robocup 2016, one of the world’s largest robotics events. Good luck, Thunderbots! For more information about the UBC Thunderbots, please visit ubcthunderbots.ca.

SAYING FAREWELL: The Vancouver Opera Company bid adieu to James Wright, its longest standing general director, with a grand finale concert and dinner. Steering the arts organization for the past 17 years, Wright will conclude his impressive run at the end of this month. Marking the milestone, the organization presented opera selections in a farewell performance held at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Soprano Tracy Dahl, mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó, tenor John Tessier and bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch headlined the special evening, before taking their seats at a post-concert dinner to toast (and roast) the likeable arts administrator and opera fanatic. A party with a purpose, the tribute event also generated funds to go towards the creation of a fund in Wright’s name, designed to support new works. KETTLE BOILS OVER: For the past four decades, the Kettle Society has been supporting people living with mental illness to lead healthier lives. The Kettle Society was created in 1976 by a small group of concerned citizens to address the need to develop support services for individuals receiving psychiatric treatment in the community. Today, the organization provides more than 4,000 individuals with a wide range of services, including a mental health drop-in, a transition house for women and more than 200 units of supported housing. Comedian Mary Walsh, an outspoken advocate for mental health and addiction awareness, headlined the Kettle’s 40th anniversary celebration. Staged at the Permanent, the cocktail party netted more than $40,000 for the non-profit agency. MAKING WAVES: President Barbara Brown and Susan Masters, executive director of the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WIDHH), fronted the organization’s 60th anniversary celebration, held at the Marine Golf and Country Club. The institute’s Diamond Gala — a sold-out affair, sponsored by the Courier — drew 200 guests who convened for an evening of fun philanthropy and to learn more about the organization’s work. Capturing people’s hearts were the night’s keynote speakers Leila Fredland and Muriel Kauffmann, who helped raise awareness and break barriers down for people who are deaf and hard of hearing. The women’s personal stories of triumph motivated guests to open their hearts and wallets. By nightfall, attendees dispensed $60,000 to support WIDHH services in audiology, counselling, sign language interpreting and communication devices.

Vancouver Opera music director Jonathan Darlington, right, hit all the right notes when he orchestrated a special concert to pay tribute to outgoing general director James Wright. .
Board chair Lisa Dominato welcomed actor and comedian Mary Walsh, an advocate for mental health, to the Kettle Society’s 40th anniversary celebration.
Opera superstars John Tessier, Krisztina Szabó and Daniel Okulitch performed opera selections in a grand finale performance honouring administrator and visionary James Wright.
Fundraiser Jim Watson and executive director Susan Masters welcomed a capacity crowd to their Diamond Anniversary gala celebration. The night of fun and philanthropy generated a record $60,000 for WIDHH.
All smiles was Kettle Society co-founder Suzanne Jean and past board chairwoman Brenda Lea Brown, after $40,000 was brought in to support the non-profit agency’s ongoing mental health services.
President Barbara Brown cut the birthday cake in celebration of the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing’s 60th anniversary. Each year, WIDHH provides services to more than 10,000 British Columbians.
Aderita Guerreiro and Adrienne Baker saw the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s recent Heart of Gold Gala raise $600,000 to save lives and create a healthy life free of heart disease and stroke.
Doctors François Bénard and Hagen Kennecke made the case for B.C. Cancer Agency’s Oct 29 Inspiration Gala. They developed a diagnostic tool integrated with genetic testing to detect cancer and predict its likelihood to respond to treatment.

Little Italy shouldn’t be the only ’hood we reduce to a stereotype Three other enclaves that deserve official city designation
This past weekend, thousands of Vancouverites gathered to celebrate their passing appreciation for a culture they’ve reduced to a few stereotypes, most of which involve pasta. Yes, Italian Days dripped its juicy red sauce and Parmesan cheese up and down Commercial Drive Sunday. And to spice things up, the city officially designated the area as Little Italy. Mamma Mia! All of which is fine and dandy in K&K’s books. But if you ask us, there are plenty of other areas of Vancouver that are long overdue for official designation status from the city.

you. Maybe your recently divorced neighbour Doug who wears cargo shorts year round used to live in Marpole. Maybe the woman next to you on the bus who’s unfortunately chowing down on a bag of fragrant Hawkins Cheezies once called Marpole home. Appreciate the colour and flavour these people bring to our streets. Celebrate their diversity and embrace them as your own. Just as long as they also didn’t come from Killarney. Those people are sketchy and shouldn’t be trusted. @KudosKvetches
The area of town that Calgarians immigrate to after leaving their Albertan homeland is a mystery to us. But their culture is a rich one, and one Vancouverites can learn from, filled with boot cut jeans, chuck wagon races and an abiding love for their adopted son Huey Lewis and his band the News. Oh wait, that’s Coquitlam. Never mind.

Arts & Entertainment THEATRE REVIEW
Directorial choices enhance Romeo and Juliet
Jo Ledingham joled@telus.net
Coltish. That’s the best word to describe Hailey Gillis who plays Juliet in Shakespeare’s timeless tale of star-crossed lovers at Bard on the Beach. Gillis is leggy, long in the arms, hands and feet. There are times when she runs around the stage like a young foal in a field of wildflowers, bursting at the seams with youthful excitement. Juliet is not quite 14 in the play, and Gillis finds the body language of young Juliet to perfection: gawky, un-selfconsciously and gracelessly draped over her balcony, impulsively throwing herself down on her bed. This physicality is probably more contemporary than was likely in the late 16th century — nevertheless, it’s lovely. This production, directed by Kim Collier, might have

been called Juliet and Romeo as it is definitely Juliet-centred. In this Bard production, Andrew Chown’s Romeo, frequently seen bare-chested, is charming once the character gets past pining and drooping over the quickly forgotten Rosalind. The story, however, always feels more Juliet’s than Romeo’s. In everything she does, director Collier brings a strong, assured vision. Casting Ben Elliott and Andrew McNee — two terrific actors with a flair for comedy — as Benvolio and Mercutio, lifts the play significantly early on. They are a couple of “dudes,” a pair of boys-willbe-boys who hang out together, in one case stabbing their empty beer cans with their swords. McNee absolutely nails the Queen Mab speech, establishing Mercutio as a man more in love with words than women. There is, additionally, more
Collier, one of Canada’s most exciting directors. The production may not move you — it’s still a sorry play about puppy love, after all — but it’s admirable. Romeo and Juliet is, as has often been remarked, a comedy that goes terribly wrong. The final tableau, beautifully staged and lit, underscored by swelling music, was enough to get most of the opening night audience on its feet. You’d have to be made of stone to remain untouched as the curtain falls. Note: A longer version of this review can be found at vancourier.com. For more reviews, go to joledingham.ca. Romeo and Juliet is at Bard on the Beach until Sept. 23. For tickets, call 604-739-0559 or go to bardonthebeach.org.

than a whiff of homoeroticism between Mercutio and Benvolio — an interesting choice. Another significant departure from traditional casting is Jennifer Lines as the nurse. This Nurse is not old, not past her best before date and definitely not coarsely bawdy. She’s effervescent, even girlish, a little sexy and more girlfriend than nursemaid to this Juliet. With Lady Capulet, Juliet’s mother (Dawn Petten), such a cold fish, the relationship between Juliet and her nurse is all this poor youngster has to hang onto when things begin to unwind. The Friar is often played as a bit of a doofus, a silly old cleric. But give the role to Scott Bellis and watch it grow. This is an accessible, handsome production with some very interesting directorial choices made by

The assortment of 3D printers and other inventions involving a meld of human and electronic brains gave the weekend’s sixth annual Vancouver Mini Maker Faire its usual futuristic flavour. For balance, there was the “stitch and bitch” corner with loomers and seamstresses along with the delightfully antiquated-themed Times Past booth, which featured an adorably cartoonish robotic barking dog named M.U.T. (Mechanical Universal Tracker) created by the husband-wife team of Christina Carr and Martin Hunger who met at a Doctor Who convention in ’87. At yet another makers ta-

ble, worklamps provided light in the otherwise dim PNE Forum where children and adults hunched over a small circuit board with soldering gun in hand. The instructions led to the completion of a blinking button featuring the Vancouver Hack Space logo in a type font familiar to those who lived in the olden days of VHS tapes. The space itself is on Cook Street and is advertised on its website as “the community garage for a community without garages.” Still, an improvement over its first location in 2008 off Hastings Street where it was a backalley entrance and members were let inside by using a key dropped down on a string from the window. The collective has no hierarchy beyond a two-tiered membership system of keyholders and regular members. Being a keyholder is as straightforward as it sounds — the space can be used at any time. It’s especially handy if your name happens to be Jade Andersen and you need to keep a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta alive. “I’ve brought my car into Hack Space — there’s one loading bay for the entire building so I always do it late at night,” said Andersen.
“I’ve got to fix these holes in the radiator, I’ve got to figure out what’s wrong with my transmission. I can say, ‘You guys! My car’s messed up!’… It’s nice to have people around who love tinkering and taking things apart. We don’t necessarily know what we’re doing but we’re all really cool about exploring and figuring things out. We’re good at figuring things out.” Besides fixing a couple of radiator holes, members have built remote-controlled helicopters, a vintage arcade game cabinet that runs 100 vintage games, a drawing robot and plans are in the works for a “near-space balloon.” The list of Andersen’s creations is a glimpse into the creative and brilliant spark of her brain; it comes as no surprise she’s a mechatronic engineering student at BCIT as of this fall. Some of those items include: bunkbeds in the shape of a treehouse, a light-therapy alarm clock and a 3D printer. It’s important to note the word “hacking” in this world is defined by tinkering, exploring and reconfiguring existing systems so they work in different ways than intended. Mini Maker Faire robotics. So don’t ask VHS members to hack into your girlfriend’s email account. “Hack Space appeals to people like me. I’m a broke university student so once a year I buy myself a new tool. I’ll save up and by myself a really fantastic miter saw or something like that, but I can’t afford the kind of tools that I like to use so it’s nice to go to a space where they’re not expensive to use,” Ander-
sen said. “A lot of people have good ideas, and they would like to make something. The limitation is not their skills, the limitation is the fact they don’t have the tools so they can’t go and develop the skills in the first place. We’re all around to help, we’re about skill-sharing, too.” Tools available at VHS include laser cutters, 3D printers, sewing machines, silkscreening supplies, bandsaws
and grinders. There is even a button-maker, which one of VHS’s members, a 13-yearold girl, made good use of as she turned her artwork into buttons that she then sells to her schoolmates. “It’s unlimited because we don’t let ourselves have barriers,” said Andersen. “If there’s a will, there’s a way.” VHS hosts an open house Tuesday evenings. I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future.

MISSING A TOOTH? Dr. Marianna Klimek
MK Pontic The ‘MK Pontic’ is a unique treatment option used to replace a single missing tooth that does not require reduction of the adjacent teeth. While not available for all individuals it can offer tooth replacement that is both cost effective and minimally invasive. It lasts for years at a cost of only
$
500
Cantilever Bridge with Splint This is formed by a pontic (artificial tooth) attached to the crown on one side and supported by a metal loop embedded in the adjacent tooth by the use of composite bonding. Only one of the teeth adjacent to the gap needs to be prepared for the crown. This patient had one congenitally missing tooth and the tooth next to the space needed a crown. The Cantilever Bridge with composite splint was conservative and successful restoration.

Hearing Test
Most adults received their last hearing test when they were in grade school. It is a good idea to have your hearing checked when you are an adult at least once a year just like your annual physical!* This test then becomes your baseline. So that in the future if you do suffer from hearing loss, your hearing practitioner can compare your loss to your baseline test. This will create a more accurate picture of your hearing levels, so the right action can be taken when appropriate.
Call Miracle-Ear Vancouver to book your annual hearing test today and get ready for summer! Affordable , esthetic dentistry for seniors

home design + style
HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS:
RayneVoyer WORDS BY JENNIFER SCOTT WESTENDER.COM
One of the most essential elements of successful design is a sense of story. Incorporating pieces that have a history to enrich the mood of décor is fundamental in creating a beautifully inviting space. Local artist, Rayne Voyer, draws from her lifetime of creative and spiritual influence to transform found oddities into art, using mixed mediums to create treasures for the home with a mystical appeal. Launching June 26, Voyer will be hosting a monthly pop-up curios shop within her studio. The boutique, Witch Merchant, will
showcase and retail Voyer’s antiques, oddities and fashion. Doors will be open from noon to 6 p.m. on the last Sunday of each month at 834 East Pender. Tell us a little about yourself. I am an artist of various mediums, but my passion lies within creating beauty out of the seemingly ordinary. For me art is a lifestyle, not a career.
Do you have a Vancouver muse? Or a favourite place in or around the city that inspires you? Ultimately, Mother Nature is my muse. Around the city there are a few places that inspire me — I love the train tracks, they are a great place to find treasures to make art with. The Strathcona

neighbourhood is my home and offers the solace and community to nurture my soul. If you could describe your artistic style in one word, what would it be? Fluid. My craft applies to all kinds of art, not just one medium,
so it’s always changing. My work offers a ritualistic element and therefore each piece appeals to everyone individually. What is your favourite accessory? A black Chihuahua. No, kidding (sort of). I love things that are old with a story to tell.
Some people collect old cameras and typewriters. Do you collect anything? I collect everything — vintage bottles, crystals, books — essentially Witch Merchant is a curated version of all of my collections. For the complete article, go to westender.com.

of dedication and expertise. At the B.C. high school championships earlier this month, Schiedel defended his gold medal in the decathlon and also collected three individual medals: a gold in the senior boys 400m hurdles, which he claimed in a record-setting 55.99 seconds, and silver medals in the 110m hurdles and pole vault. Modest through to the roots of his thick, uncombed hair, Schiedel downplays his successes and potential. “I don’t really know that much about track, not as much as other people who do decathlon my age,” he said. But for the second consecutive year in his age group, Schiedel is the top-ranked decathlete in Canada. His current point tally of 6,091, recorded at the B.C. championship multi-event meet in Surrey, puts him sixth out of all Canadian decathletes, who are led by Olympian Damian Warner with a season high of 8,523. In 2015, Schiedel set the national youth benchmark of 6,526 points the first year the sport opened to U18
athletes and he met the IAAF international standard, which meant he traded in his school and club uniforms for one with a maple leaf and represented Canada at the world youth championships in Cali, Colombia. On the world stage, he cracked the top 20. Nonetheless, Schiedel expected more of himself. He follows a selfguided training schedule and aims to raise his point tally. With a roster of coaches behind him, including Vancouver College’s Herb Sommerfeld and event-specific coaches in Richmond and Langley, the 18 year old races for the Vancouver Olympic Club and oversees much of his own development. “I was really hoping I would improve a lot this year,” he said, his voice betraying disappointment that his best score came last season. Ahead of him this summer lies the National Youth Championships in Edmonton. Schiedel is training for that meet with a glint in his eye. What comes next is unwritten and may yet still be golden. — Megan Stewart

ecathlete Jasper Schiedel doesn’t know where he’ll be for the first semester of his university track career, but a decade ago he had a perfectly clear idea where he was going and who he wanted to compete for — and he more than realized it. Still in elementary school, he watched as the Fighting Irish football team walked from Vancouver College to a public park for practice. Seeing them dressed in their pads and carrying bright, metallic helmets, Schiedel was instantly hooked. “I saw the gold helmets and knew I wanted to be a part of that,” he said this week about his decision to attend the all-boys school for five years of high school. As a varsity football player dressed in purple and gold last season, Schiedel rushed for more than 700 yards and scored eight touchdowns despite an untimely ankle injury. It was his time to turn heads, which the running back did on the gridiron and as a decathlete in a difficult sport that takes high levels

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

Come stand in the sun and talk about cars with me! brendanmcaleer@gmail.com
Summer is nearly here, and you know what that means: standing around in fields talking about cars! Ooh, I can’t get enough of this sort of thing — chatting about the vagaries of TVR with a Tasmin owner, geeking out over rare parts with VW owners, helping Alfa Romeo drivers with a push or two. The summer car show scene is officially here. Over the course of the next few months, there’ll be all sorts of stuff to see and do, including some pretty unique shows that are a bit more involved than just gazing at your reflection in the chrome. Here’s a few you shouldn’t miss. • If you’re a hot-rod fan, hop on the ferry to Victoria for the weekend of July 23 and 24. It’s Deuce Days, an event that only comes along every few years, but one that’s all the more spectacular for it. Billed as the largest
gathering of ’32 Fords in the world, Deuce Days culminates in a simply amazing show, with hundreds of cars ringing the entire inner harbour of Victoria, and even parked out in front of the legislature buildings. All sorts of other hot rods show up too, so if you’re a fan of American Iron, this is where you want to be. • European classics aren’t the only cars getting a bit of respect these days. After a brief hiatus, I’m pleased to report that the Japanese classic car show is back on this year. Always a fun mix, and heavily attended by local Datsun fans, you almost always see a few oddball machines here. The survival rate for Japanese classics on the West Coast is the envy of everyone back east, so there are cars here you might not see anywhere else. Dates and location to be posted in an upcoming column. • Leaving the classics aside for a moment, the

Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association’s Electrafest is set to be even bigger this year. Not just a car show, VEVA’s mission statement revolves around spreading the electric gospel — they’re enthusiastic about EVs, and they want you to give one a try. To that end, they’re offering test drives of all sorts of electric machines, from Nissan Leafs to Teslas to electric bicycles and scooters. As an added bonus, there are all types

of home-built electrical specials for the engineering crowd to pore over, and VEVA’s incredible 1912 Detroit Electric (still working perfectly after all these years) will be on display. Find them at Concord Pacific Presentation Centre downtown, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the Great Canadian Volkswagen Weekend is one of the biggest events on the
calendar. VW culture is extremely active on the West Coast, and this wellattended event has a real family feel to it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re an air-cooled purist, nomadic Westfalia fan, or tuner kid with a slammed GTI — there’s something for everyone here. Check it out the weekend of Aug. 19 to 21. • The Edgemont Village Show and Shine is a widely varied event that turns picturesque Edge-

mont into a walkable paradise. There are all kinds of fun machines to see here: there’s a red Forward Control Jeep that’s a bit of a rarity. While dates don’t seem to be set yet, this one’s usually in August. Keep your eyes on the event calendar. Even if your daily is a minivan, it’s worth getting out there and checking one of the local shows out. You might just need some sunshine to tide you over when the fall rains come.
