Cyclists prepare to weigh in on Arbutus HUB Cycling organizing Bike the Night Ride for Sept. 16

Naoibh O’Connor

noconnor@vancourier.com

Jeff Leigh was looking forward to Arbutus Greenway being paved with asphalt between the 10th and 37th Avenue bike routes before the end of August — just in time for HUB Cycling’s Bike the Night Ride on Sept. 16. The family-friendly ride will take participants through the streets of Kitsilano and Shaughnessy, as well as along that part of Arbutus corridor. The city had promised the section would be paved by month’s end, according to Leigh, until protesters convinced the city to stop work until consultation is held to determine what the temporary path should look like. A date or dates have yet to be set. Consultation on the final greenway design, meanwhile, is expected to begin in September. At this point, asphalt covers the Arbutus Gre-

enway from 16th to 33rd, with hard-packed gravel laid on the mid-block sec-

tions on either end between West 10th and West 41st. Crews are working on

connecting the mid-block sections to the street. Leigh, a spokesman

for HUB, said members would test the hardpacked gravel surface to

make sure it’s a safe and adequate route for the event on the 16th. Reaction to the city’s decision to halt paving has been mixed, both online and through official city channels. Between Aug. 5 and 15, 79 people weighed in by correspondence to the city — 46 expressed support for paving, 18 were against it, five were neutral or offered a suggestion, while 10 asked a general question. Leigh told the Courier a hard surface is best for cycling. “There needs to be a recognition of both what’s good for cycling and what’s good for walking and getting people on to an active transportation corridor,” he said. “In terms of cycling, a hard surface is far preferred. What we find is it promotes the most usership — it’s what most cyclists would prefer to see and that includes families with kids and so on.”

Greenway path He maintains it’s an open question what people would like for the walking path. “I don’t think we have a strong position on what the walking path should be surfaced in — certainly if people want to walk on gravel, there is gravel there that they can walk on next to the paved path.” Leigh pointed out when there is a gravel path next to a paved bike path, people who don’t like gravel, or who have mobility challenges, move on to the bike path. “That’s what happened on the B.C. Parkway… When it was built with a gravel path and a paved cycling path, people just moved over to the paved path. So I think the challenge is if you create a paved cycling path, that for argument’s sake is half the width that’s there, and then say, ‘We’re going to do the other half as gravel,’ I’d be interested in how that will be managed.” Leigh has cycled the paved portion of the route and says he hasn’t witnessed other cyclists racing down it. He said it needs to be used responsi-

bly and the road makes more sense for faster riders. During consultation on improvements for the south False Creek seawall, Leigh said there was discussion about whether it would become a highspeed commuter route if it was widened. The solution was to create an alternate high-speed route, which is the seaside bypass that goes down Charleson. “By signing it and improving that route for highspeed cyclists, you leave the greenway for people who want to enjoy a more leisurely experience,” he said. “We think that’s the answer. I don’t think you decide to keep people off by not paving it.” HUB is encouraging its members to get involved in both consultation for the temporary pathway and for the final design. Leigh said the organization will ask participants of its Bike the Night Ride if they prefer the paved or gravel path. “Our goal is to get more people cycling, more often, and whatever accomplishes

that is the way we’re going,” he said. “We’re not wedded to pavement or gravel. We’re promoting cycling as a transportation alternative. If our membership comes back and says, ‘We’re just as happy to ride on a gravel path,’ that’s fine. That hasn’t been our experience so far, but we really have to talk to our members and see.” HUB has discussed ideas for its general vision for the final design of the greenway. The vision talks about the route being a social experience, that it be sufficiently wide for people to ride side-by-side, that it has room for all users and that it respects heritage and different neighbourhoods. “But it’s at a very, very high visioning level. I think we really need to get to a consultation,” he said. “We look forward to that consultation. These are very early ideas about what it could be. But we see it as an active transportation corridor that we need to have all user groups have a say in.” @Naoibh

App keeps tabs on beaches

Waterkeeper Swim Guide tracks water conditions at 7,000 beaches worldwide John Kurucz

jkurucz@vancourier.com

It’s an app that tracks crap, among other things. Operated locally by the Vancouver-based charity Fraser Riverkeeper, the Waterkeeper Swim Guide app allows users to monitor water quality conditions at 7,000 beaches across the world. More than 1,000 beaches in Canada are in the free app’s database, including 250 in B.C.

If all this waste gets into the water it creates an E. coli bloom and makes the water unsafe. Joe Daniels

The information provided is aggregated by local waterkeeper groups and provincial health authorities, and keeps tabs on water quality indicators like and E. coli and Enterococci levels, both of which can sicken swimmers if counts climb higher than 200 bacteria per 100 ml of water. “A lot of people really appreciate the app and the insight it gives them,” said Fraser Riverkeeper’s Joe Daniels. “A lot of them don’t automatically think about checking water quality before going down to the beach and having that app is very useful and handy.” The app gives users the option of searching for

beaches by name, or by browsing for them on a map of Vancouver. Info around a beach’s history of bacteria testing is also provided, along with options for users to report pollution, litter or other unsafe conditions. The guide suggests Third and Jericho beaches are the most consistently clean beaches in Vancouver, while Trout Lake and the Oasis at Wreck Beach rank as some of the worst. Daniels said a number of variables influence poor water quality: large concentrations of water fowl, boaters dumping waste, sewer run off and even those who don’t clean up their dog waste. “If all this waste gets into the water, it creates an E. coli bloom and makes the water unsafe,” Daniels said. The app was developed three years ago by the Lake Ontario Waterkeeper group and shared with affiliate organizations across the world. It was updated earlier this summer and is now in its third iteration. The app has close to 24,000 users in B.C. alone and more than 500,000 globally, according to Daniels. “Our main goal is protecting users who are using the beaches and making sure they’re safe,” Daniels said. “It’s not so much profit-motivated as it is to keep people aware of water quality issues and make sure they’re informed if there are advisories on their beaches so that they don’t get sick.” The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. @JohnKurucz

UPDATE - 2016 SUMMER RUNWAY OPERATIONS RESA PROJECT AND SOUTH RUNWAY MAINTENANCE Due to the poor weather conditions experienced in June and early July, the Runway End Safety Areas (RESA) project and the annual runway maintenance program have been extended two weeks—from September 2, 2016 to September 17, 2016. During this time, the North Runway will continue to be used to accommodate all take-offs and landings six nights a week (Sun-Fri) between the hours of 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Up-to-date information about the closures will be available at www.yvr.ca/updates. is overtly about religion like, say, The Passion of the Christ or The Ten Commandments. But Jason Byassee finds a message for Christians and analogies with ancient religious figures in the Coen brothers’ film about the definitive slacker. Byassee, who is a professor at the Vancouver School of Theology, is a former minister at a North Carolina church and, notably, spent a decade penning film reviews for the magazine The Christian Century. He got that gig when the editor told him that people who knew anything about movies didn’t know anything about God and vice versa. Byassee, who spent much of the ’80s watching movies and later was pursuing advanced religious studies, has found lots of messages about religion that filmmakers probably didn’t know were there. In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges plays The Dude, a slacker who rejects much of what North American culture tells us we should covet. “The ancient monks and nuns rejected those things — especially money, sex and power — as competitors for their devotion to God,” Byassee wrote in his review of the film. “The Dude rejects money and power too. They simply don’t hold sway over him the way they do over most of us. Even his non-

rejection of sex is interesting, for what he actually rejects is fatherhood.” The ancient religious, Byassee writes, rejected sex to avoid building a family empire that could aspire to “secular immortality.” “The Dude is not interested in any of that either. He just wants to roll,” Byassee writes. Even movies that he sees as “flagrantly irreligious or hostile to morality” can be seen as morality plays in their own right, he insists. Other genres, like superhero films, have more obvious comparisons. “Clearly what a superhero movie or book is about is wanting someone to try to fix something we can’t fix,” he says, though he cautions that religion means more than that too. Sports movies may not be overtly religious but often evoke values and rituals that can mirror faith. Hoosiers is about a small-town basketball team that beats the big boys and wins the state championship. “The town doesn’t come off as particularly religious about God, more about basketball,” Byassee laughs. “But this seems [to be] about teamwork and becoming bigger than you could on your own.” Still, despite devoting so much of his career to pondering religiosity in popular culture, he is ambivalent about the very pursuit of what he calls “popcorn theology.”

us in the movie theatre He believes there are things a person can gain from church attendance that they cannot from sitting in a theatre. “I have a really high notion of the church. I think there are things that happen as part of the church that can’t happen anywhere else and so I’m reluctant to give that away to the Cineplex,” he says. “At the end of the day, Hollywood is a $1-billion business trying to manipulate us out of our money. I get that. Obviously, of course, others would say the church is that too, but anyway… You can go to the movies without having to learn how to love your enemy or feed the poor or become holier. You shouldn’t be able to get away with going to church without those things.” Still, he adds, “I do think God is not above meeting us in the movie theatre where people are trying to tell a beautiful story well and trying to leave you, as the viewer, changed.” As a Methodist minister who now teaches others how to preach, Byassee acknowledges his profession has stuff to learn from Hollywood. “That is surprisingly like what I am trying to do when I preach: trying to tell a beautiful story well and leave [people] changed,” he says. “I guess what moviemakers

are doing is what other storytellers and mythmakers are doing. They’re trying to give people something worth living by. You can tell when someone has done that. It’s an honouring of what it means to be human when someone tells a story well.” When a story — in this case, a film — is not told well, we can get upset and not just because we’re out $20 and two hours. “It’s a defilement of what it means to be human to tell a bad story,” he says. “It’s not just wasted time, it’s a defaced notion of humanity.” Human beings, Byassee says, are animals that live by the story, “that want to take stock of how tragic and awful the world is and also say, by the end, all things shall be well.” Is he suggesting humankind is going to have a Hollywood ending? “Hollywood occasionally hints at an ending so glorious no human can imagine it, so whatever is good in Hollywood endings is only good because it hints at a thing that’s even better,” he says. Even the act of human creation itself mirrors the opening verses of the Bible. “In the Scriptures, God is one who creates everything with a word,” Byassee says. “God speaks and, bam, there are supernovas and lobsters and the

Pavement politics, Vancouver style

O

n our usual Sunday morning distance run in late July, a small group of us plotted a route that would cut across from the East Side through the leafy Shaughnessy neighbourhood, then back. Just about at the halfway mark we arrived at Arbutus Street and spotted the newly paved pathway along the old railway corridor.

Right then I was convinced (and remain so) that City of Vancouver staff had made a smart decision to hasten access to the Arbutus Greenway for all pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users, even with a planned public consultation on the pathway barely underway. We were all tickled by the thought we were among the first local runners to test out the former rail right-of-way, so we snapped a selfie with someone’s smartphone before jogging the route. Right then I was convinced (and remain so) that City of Vancouver staff had made a smart decision to hasten access to the Arbutus Greenway for all pedestrians, cyclists

and wheelchair users, even with a planned public consultation on the pathway barely underway. That this was not a universally held opinion did not come as a shock to me. This is Vancouver, after all, where polarized debates on bike lanes are even more common than kvetching about the Canucks. The arguments of the anti-paving advocates are a patchwork. They include safety concerns, environmental protection, cost and even accessibility for blackberry pickers. There is no rush, some say, let’s plan this route right. Others strongly believe that gravel is a suitable surface for walkers and those on wheels. Another recurring theme is that Mayor Gregor Robertson and his Vision council do not care to listen to the public, and it is time to take a stand for “more consultation.” I think I have read them all, yet remain unconvinced by the opposition. If you have ever walked or cycled our coveted seawall, you know pavement is a safe and efficient way to provide access to the outdoors. Furthermore, you can recycle asphalt if another surface is chosen later. Nonetheless, in an attempt to defuse an escalating conflict, city engineer Jerry Dobrovolny pushed the pause button on paving the Arbutus Greenway so more people could be heard on the matter. This decision, in turn, frustrated active transportation supporters, who have become accustomed to getting what they want from Robertson’s administration. Welcome to pavement politics, Vancouver style. To understand what the city is trying to

Paving of the Arbutus Greenway has been halted pending further consultation. PHOTO DAN TOULGOET

accomplish, it could be useful to go back a quarter century. In 1991, then Mayor Gordon Campbell and his council launched an independent Urban Landscape Task Force made up of planning professionals and community advocates. The Task Group’s final report — titled Greenways-Public Ways (1992) — followed another visionary city strategic plan dubbed Clouds of Change (1990), which took aim at reducing air pollution emissions. It was in the “Greenways” report that the idea of an Arbutus right-of-way that “includes bicycle and pedestrian paths” was forged. A while back I received a bound copy of the report as a keepsake — along with the Vancouver Greenways Plan (1995) — from retired city planner Sandra James, who was, and is, the city’s most energetic proponent of walkability. On page 46 of the greenways report, a section titled “Vancouver Vision: Year 2010” immediately jumps out at me. I had to smirk at the “Vision” title given its modern political connotation, and the fact that at least two of the Greenways’ committee members would serve on the board of the Non-Partisan Association some years later.

In many ways, the report’s “Year 2010” sounds a lot like Vancouver today, with improved walking and cycling routes, reduced car trips in the downtown core thanks to better alternatives, and a network of greenways across the city. This is something I think a lot of us are quite proud of, notwithstanding the complaints about bike lanes and lack of consultation. For nearly a generation, the City of Vancouver has been striving to become more livable and green. With so many new hires in the city’s senior management hailing from the United States, the documents I mentioned — along with the formative 1929 Bartholomew Plan — would make for fitting summer reading. It would surely give them a head start when it comes to understanding where we live. In the fullness of time it is possible that securing the Arbutus corridor for public use may be what people remember about Mayor Robertson’s time in office. But legacies are for another day, and Vancouver’s pedestrians, cyclists, runners, scooter and wheelchair riders deserve access to the greenway now. Allen Garr is on vacation. @MikeKlassen

PNE gets health conscious

Fatima Riaz

For many people, the PNE conjures up memories of sugary candy floss, deep fried foods and the sweet aroma of mini doughnuts, followed by a healthy serving of guilt. This year, however, the PNE will offer a variety of 15 healthy food choices to suit fair goers’ every dietary whim and restriction, whether it’s vegan, gluten-free, peanut-free, dairy-free, sugar-free or even oil-free. According to Faizzal Fatehali, manager of exhibitor space, the PNE is responding to the needs of its customers. “[Diet cautious food] is a trend in restaurants, so why not in fairs,” said Fatehali. In addition to dietsensitive foods, the PNE will offer an assortment of vegan items, tossed salads and locally grown corn on the cob. Visitors will also ®

be able to dine on crepes, tacos and wood-fired pizza. Gluten-free options include rice noodles from the Saltspring Noodle Bar, which also provides peanut-free and dairy free options. Lemon Heaven offers diabetic-friendly lemonade sweetened with Splenda, while thirsty travellers can drop by the Fruit In Fruit stall, which serves fresh juice in containers fashioned from the actual fruit. A green sticker on the stall indicates it offers healthy food options. Of course, customers can still throw caution to the wind and indulge in the PNE’s abundance of sweet treats and deep fried diet-breakers. And only they and their conscience have to know about it. The PNE opens Aug. 20 and runs until Sept. 5. For a complete schedule and food options, visit pne.ca.

PARTY ON THE PIER: Peace Arch Hospital was the beneficiary of the inaugural Picnic on the Pier. Community builder Landmark Premiere Properties fronted the special evening on White Rock Pier. A lucky 200 snapped up tickets to the outdoor party — a magical night featuring a long table alfresco dinner set against the stunning backdrop of the sun sinking into the Pacific Ocean. Along with a delicious dinner, the program included a cocktail reception and live entertainment. Yours truly served as master of ceremonies. Before the sun would fall behind beyond the horizon, Ray Chen, Landmark president, presented Siobhan Philips, chair of the foundation, with a cheque for $38,300. Proceeds will go towards the hospital’s $15-million effort to refurbish its emergency room for the growing “City by the Sea.”

Read more at vancourier.com.

Board of governors Jeffrey and Peter Barnett, along with fundraiser Cally Wesson, thanked guests for their support of Variety — The Children’s Charity, which marked its 50th anniversary of helping children with special needs reach their fullest potential.

Variety — The Children’s Charity’s Bill Senghera and Kristi Gill hosted the firm’s summer boat party, a three-hour tour along False Creek, to thank supporters and share news of their Nov. 5 fundraiser, One Night in Monte Carlo.

The community fundraiser on the iconic White Rock Pier was backed by councillors Lynne Sinclair, Bill Lawrence and Megan Knight. The event drew sunny skies and 200 party guests.

Siobhan Philips, chair of Peace Arch Hospital Foundation, and the Pace Group’s Norman Stowe saw the inaugural Picnic on the Pier, sponsored by Landmark Premiere Properties, raise $33,800 for the hospital’s emergency room campaign.

in Heathers: The Musical Co-written (book, music and lyrics) by O’Keefe and Murphy, the musical opened off-Broadway in 2014. Billed as a comedy, it’s not really funny — at least to those of us well out of our high school days. When buddies Ram (Thomas King) and Kurt (Ben Bilodeau) are left alone when their dads go fishing, it’s party time. The whole ensemble breaks into “Big Fun” and that big fun includes oral sex, on-thecouch sex, drinking that leads to puking and eventually to what can only be called a girl-on-guy, lose-your-virginity seduction scene. It’s disturbing when the Heathers set Veronica up for an unwanted three-way with Ram and Kurt — what would be a rape if the guys weren’t so drunk. And although initially J.D. (David Z. Cohen) is seen as some kind of smart, sexy, avenging angel, it soon becomes apparent he’s seriously messed up. While few of us saw our high school years as the best years of our lives, these kids seem — as they sing — badly “damaged.” A teenager I know said she and her friends — who all loved the film — saw it as a funny send-up,

very American and not meant to be realistic. It’s up there with The Rocky Horror Show. It’s certainly not the stuff of comedy. Indeed, Heathers: The Musical isn’t sure what it wants to be and that’s a problem. Directed by Ryan Mooney for Fighting Chance Productions, it is, however, boisterous and the music is “big fun.” Performances by this young cast are energetic and enthusiastic; some of the voices are outstanding — including Linda Leong Sum (“Shine a Light”), Unger (“Kindergarten Boyfriend”), Kang (“Lifeboat”) and Ullrich, in the especially poignant “Seventeen” with Cohen. Looking at the target audience and considering the subjects — bullying, teen suicide, violence and homophobia — it should be a good show for, say, 12-year-olds and up but the language is rough. Tim Driscoll’s set design — lit by Nicole Weismiller — is sharp, colourful and practical. Under the musical direction of Clare Wyatt, the band (Wyatt, Mike Allen, Jamison Ko, Adrian Sowa and Joanna Yoo) really rocks, although in the opening number, the

set-up to the story, Ullrich struggled (the night I attended) to make herself heard over the band. Lyndsey Britten ably choreographs some full company numbers, especially the curtain ringing reprise of “Seventeen.” This edgy stuff, appealing to a younger demographic, is the stock-in-trade of Fighting Chance Productions and they do it well. Past shows include Rent, The Laramie Project and, still their best production to date, the incomparable Sweeney Todd. Artistic director Mooney mines Capilano University and other theatre schools for young fresh talent, giving these soon-to-be-professionals a good start, making it a win-win situation for the company, the performers and audiences interested in seeing new faces. Heathers: The Musical runs alternately with American Idiot. For more reviews, go to joledingham.ca. Heathers: The Musical is at Waterfront Theatre until Aug. 26. Arbutus and West 11th Avenue may not be the hippest part of town, but it definitely got cooler this year with the opening of Tangram Creamery. Vice as nice

“We ain’t ice cream,” says Chris White, owner of Nice Vice in Yaletown.

A recovering addict, White started making vice cream — a dairy-free, plantbased ice cream alternative — as a hobby. “I got clean about eight years ago, and a big part of recovery is eating ice cream. It’s a way to socialize…without going to a bar.” In the process, he discovered his lactose intolerance. Instead of dairy, White plays with sweet potato milk, organic coconut milk and brown rice milk. As he says, it’s not ice cream — the texture is thinner and slightly grainier, the flavours cleaner. Avocado-based flavours have

What do you get when you combine ice cream, performance art and science? Mister. Co-owners Tommy Choi and Michael Lai use liquid nitrogen — chilled at a blistering -196 C — to make ice cream that’s denser and creamier than is possible with traditional methods. Choi explains that the regular ice-cream making process takes about 45 minutes to freeze ice cream, but liquid nitrogen can do it in three minutes. “There’s no time for ice crystals and ice to get into the base.” (For anyone worried about possible ill effects of using liquid nitrogen, don’t be — the air we breathe is comprised of 78 per cent nitrogen.) In a city notorious for finicky permitting, Mister didn’t have any issues with the city or health department around the use of liquid nitrogen.

This week: Head for home, rest, embrace family, let projects slowly gear down (as a period of mistakes/delays looms). Best “action days”: Wed., and Sat. daytime. YEAR AHEAD: Ah, sweet romance! If you’re single, expect the love train to take a lucky turn toward your heart. If you’re married, you could be tempted by an outside romance, but it’s much more likely that you’ll deepen your love with your spouse.

This week: Sun./Mon. are romantic, creative. (But your main focus, now and through the month ahead, is on career, other duties.) Tackle chores Mon. eve to Wed. afternoon. Relationships fill Wed. eve to Fri. eve – be careful, someone’s irritated – and you might feel fooled, betrayed. Mysteries, intimacy, financial actions Saturday. YEAR AHEAD: Wow, are you going to be happy! Even if nothing big, lucky or exciting occurs, you’ll be happy.

This week: A month of errands and easy chores begins. You’ll be happy, popular Mon. eve to noon Wed. Your energy and clout soar Saturday. YEAR AHEAD: A sector close to your heart receives a ray of luck this year ahead (Sept. 9/16-Oct. 10/17) – your home, family, security, garden, nutrition and soul receive a warm, encouraging sense of optimism, cheerfulness and fortune.

This Week: Legal matter might solve a domestic problem Sun./Mon. Romance, creativity lucky, strong and well-starred for the future, Mon. afternoon to Wed. eve. Take a risk! Tackle chores cautiously Thurs./Fri. Relationships Sat. A loving, mellow, wise month starts now. YEAR AHEAD: Only about four times in your working life will you enter such a fortunate career period as in the 13 months ahead (Sept. 2016-Oct. 2017).

This Week: Answers available Sun., but not from co-workers. Great luck on career fronts Mon. eve to Wed. noon – make your bid for advancement! Events bad, mood happy, Thurs./Fri. Retreat, Sat. YEAR AHEAD: You’ll be busy, busy, busy from Sept. 2016 to Oct. 2017. Errands, travel, messaging and casual encounters will fill many days, many weeks. The good thing is, though you might at times be flustered by the swift pace, the stakes are not high.

This week: Relationships veer into deeper waters until late September. Sunday/Mon. are for errands. Focus on your home, kids, Mon. eve to Wed. eve. Romance calls Wed. eve to Fri. eve, but it has laryngitis: rebuffs abound. Tackle chores Sat. YEAR AHEAD: You could hardly find a sweeter, mellower year than this one, Sept. 9/16 to Oct. 10/17. Your mind will be at ease, even as it roams everywhere, seeking knowledge, travel and new experience.

This Week: Invest or seek intimacy Sun. p.m., not before 2 p.m. (PDT). Love, learning, travel and legal matters flow well Mon.-Wed. Love, too. Your energy, charisma soar. Career obstacles Thurs./Fri. Optimism, popularity, Sat. YEAR AHEAD: This is your “fistfuls of money” year, Virgo. Your pockets or bank account will swell with increased earnings. Extra income can grow from garage sales, selling anything, even your home or car, from cultivating and landing new, well-heeled clients, from overtime at work, or from a pay raise.

This week: Relationships fill this week and the next three. Read the Aquarius message above (last paragraph) regarding approaching others – ditto for you, until mid-May/17. You can only gain by approaching, and can only lose by being overlyindependent. Chase money Sun./Mon. Errands, friends Mon.-Wed. Home, kids, nature Thurs./Fri. Romance (serious) Sat. THIS YEAR: From Sept. 9/16 to Oct. 10/17, Pisces, you can literally change your life and its major direction(s).

Disc golf world championship soars into Vancouver More than 30 competitors from four continents battle for disc domination

John Kurucz

jkurucz@vancourier.com

First things first: it’s not a Frisbee, it’s a disc. Secondly, participants aren’t a bunch of weekend warriors content with a simple jaunt around the park while downing a couple of cold ones. On the contrary, they practise daily, have personal trainers and play for money in tournaments across North America. There are even organizing bodies worldwide and player rankings are maintained on the regular. Such are the intricacies surrounding disc golf, a sport similar to traditional golf that’s seemingly exploding in popularity across the world. Organizers of this week’s inaugural Team Disc Golf World Championship are hoping to capitalize on that momentum, as teams and spectators from all corners descend upon Vancouver to crown the kings and queens of all things disc. “It’s something that anybody can play and that’s the coolest part about it,” said Vancouver’s Leanne Fulton, a member of Team Canada’s eight-player contingent. “My dad can play, my niece and nephews can play, and they’re all under

10 years old. It doesn’t matter if you’re fit, if you’re super competitive. There’s a place for anybody’s interest or ability in the sport.” Running Aug. 18 to 21 at Queen Elizabeth Park and on Grouse Mountain, the showcase event features teams from Japan, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, the U.S. and Canada. The tournament format will include team, individual and doubles matches and more than $5,000 is up for grabs in prize money. Yes, money will awarded for essentially throwing some plastic in to a basket, but that’s the norm on planet disc. Take Fulton’s latest competitive foray, for example: when reached by the Courier, she was in Emporia, Kan. playing in the 2016 Disc Golf World Championships. The town of just over 20,000 is a hotbed for disc golf, hosts multiple tournaments annually and sees a tangible boost in the local economy from the sport alone. The games are even live streamed on YouTube in most of the town’s watering holes. “It’s so fascinating — it’s a little town in the middle of nowhere, but they are disc golf crazy here,” Fulton said. “The whole town has gotten behind it and it’s a big source

Steve Crichton (left) and Dan Laitsch are helping organize this week’s inaugural Team Disc Golf World Championship at Queen Elizabeth Park and Grouse Mountain. PHOTO DAN TOULGOET

of industry for them because they hold major events every year. For a town this size, it’s a really big deal.” According to tournament director Dan Laitsch, the sport first became a big deal in the mid-1970s: that’s when rules were formalized and facilities began springing up across North America. The courses are a nobrainer for municipalities, according to Laitsch, due to the low costs involved (about $9,000) and the

spin-off benefits of offering recreational facilities on public lands. Laitsch took up disc golf in the mid-’90s while camping in Virginia and he’s now involved with the British Columbia Disc Sports Society, serving as past president. Yes, there’s a provincial society devoted to disc sports. And it boasts more than 500 members. “We have a member who dropped between 50 and 75 pounds just by playing disc golf,” Laitsch said. “It

gets you out of the house, it gets you walking around and it gets your heart rate up. Some people just want to walk through the park and throw a Frisbee around, then you have people like the competitors in our upcoming event who appreciate the perfection of a well-thrown disc and the opportunity to test themselves against their fellow competitors.” The rules in disc golf mirror those in traditional golf: the end goal is to get the disc in to a basket in the

fewest shots possible. The discs are made from varying types of plastic to accommodate specific shots: drivers have sharper edges to cut through the wind, while putters have duller edges and tend to go straighter. Games typically last 15 to 20 minutes on a smaller course, three hours on longer courses and a starter set of discs runs you about $30. Along with Laitsch and Fulton, Vancouver’s Steve Crichton is helping to organize this week’s tournament. A Team Canada member with 20 years of experience under his belt, Crichton says his team has an ace in the hole leading up to this week’s tee off. “We know these courses — Queen Elizabeth and Grouse are pretty much our home courses, so we’ll have a distinct advantage with the familiarity with the courses that we’ll be playing,” said Crichton. “Most of us who are on this team from B.C. have played together, so we all work really well together. There’s a continuity within the players that are on this team that will definitely benefit us.” To follow the disc drama that will play out this weekend, go online to pdga.com/ teamworlds. @JohnKurucz

Hastings Little League punches ticket to World Series

Team faces powerhouse Japan on Friday John Kurucz

jkurucz@vancourier.com

Double-digit fireworks be damned, the Hastings Little League baseball team leaned perfectly on one of sport’s oldest clichés when it mattered most. Defence indeed won the day on Saturday, as the Vancouver-based club claimed national supremacy with a 1-0 win over Whalley in the finals of the Little League Canadian Championships. The team of 11-to

13-year-olds left Sunday to Williamsport, Pa., where they host Team Japan on Friday in the opening contest of the Little League World Series. Saturday’s national final featured razor-thin margins: scoreless in the fifth, Nicola Barba knocked home the game’s lone run on a 3-2 pitch that drove home Matteo Ripoli to seal the win. “I was just thinking put the ball in play, see what I can do,” Barba said. “I just battled… This team

is so good, it’s unbelievable.” Starting pitcher Loreto Siniscalchi tossed a veritable gem, striking out 13 without conceding a hit. Stefano Dal Sasso came on in the sixth to preserve the win in front of an estimated crowd of 4,000 at Hastings Park. “I just tried to find my groove, my preferable spot with the ball and once I found it, I found my groove [and] I was more into the game,” Siniscalchi said. “I was going to do as much as

I can. It took a team effort and everyone did their best, the best job they could do. We won as a team.” It was Vancouver’s closest margin of victory throughout the 10-day tourney: while they had previously recorded a 5-4 win over Whalley in round robin play, their remaining contests were won handily by double-digit scores. Hastings advanced to the final by way of a 9-0 win over Team Alberta Friday, and collectively outscored its opposition

73-9 over the course of a perfect eight-game run. The club’s latest national crown is its third since 2009. Hastings finished 1-2 at the Little League World Series in both 2009 and 2013. As for the tournament leaderboard, Siniscalchi led all comers in homeruns (five) and finished tied for first in RBIs alongside Barba with 17. The 13-year-old surrendered just one hit and no earned runs, while striking out 31 opposing batters,

good for second place among all pitchers. Barba fanned 32 batters to lead the tournament. Hastings now turns its attention to the international scene and takes on the Japanese entry from Chofu Little League, a team from Tokyo, at 11 a.m. PST Friday. Japanese teams have claimed the Little League World Series title in four of the last six years. — with files from the Burnaby Now. @JohnKurucz

Tesla helps injured man reach hospital Brendan McAleer

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com

Tesla Autopilot saves a life

While controversy continues to swirl around whether the world is ready for fully autonomous vehicles, the semiautonomous car is already beginning to prove its worth. Tesla is currently fighting off a storm of criticism over crashes involving its Autopilot driver assist (most of which seem to be human rather than computer error), but in at least one case, the system seems to have made the difference between life and death. According to Slate. com, attorney Joshua Neally was headed home from work to his house in Branson, Mo., when he suffered a pulmonary embolism. Luckily for Neally, he happened to be behind the wheel of his Model X, with its Autopilot system on. Despite having his driving capabilities severely reduced, Neally was able to use Autopilot to get him 30 kilometres down the road and into the parking lot of a hospital just off the highway. The car’s driver assist functions helped him navigate despite the crippling pain. Never mind the selfdriving car, this is an example of how the semiautonomous car will end up saving lives. With an aging population behind the wheel, the ability of a car to make up for an incapacitated driver will become ever more important. Maybe far off in the future, that car will know enough to drive you right to the hospital itself, but in the more immediate present, at least the smartest cars out there can help prevent a crash.

Japan approves the mirrorless car

In other tech news, Japan has approved the use of camera-based systems in cars to replace the side mirror. While no manufacturer has yet stepped forward to take advantage of the recent update to Japanese road requirements, there are any number of advantages to going mirrorless. For one thing, a physical side-view mirror causes a significant amount of aerodynamic drag on a car. They also

generally provide a limited amount of viewing area and can have blindspots if improperly set. A camera could show a number of different views, including a wide angle to eliminate blind spots. With tough new efficiency requirements coming in the next decade, the reduced drag will help automakers reach economy targets. Of course, it’s also just another thing to break, and you still have to get drivers to actually use them properly. Still, look forward to not having to squeeze around all those mirrors on the car deck of a B.C. Ferry some time in the not-too-distant future.

magnetically adjustable suspension and wide high-performance tires. It’ll pull more than a G in the corners, and can stop from 100 kilometres per hour in about 33 metres. Ford, meanwhile, isn’t taking all this supercharged Chevy stuff lying down. The GT500 version of their Mustang

has been spotted roaming around Dearborn, Mich. The old GT500 had 662 supercharged horsepower, but wasn’t much in the handling department. The new car has the same bones as the trackspecial GT350 — will it be enough to best the Camaro? The war started in the 1960s still rages.

The Tesla Model X.

Porsche crossover coupe tester spotted

And now for some distinctly less pleasant news from the future. Instead of working on a svelte new sporting machine, Porsche appears to be developing a coupe-styled four-door crossover that’s a cross between the Panamera and the Cayenne. Oh no. Not another one of these stupid things — what’s wrong with just a regular Cayenne? Are companies required by law to build less-useful versions of cars that are perfectly fine in the first place? Why not spend the money on a compact sedan to compete with the BMW 3 Series? Or a reborn version of the 928? Well anyway, brace yourself for a Cayenne Coupe, cutting you off in traffic sooner than you expect.

Camaro ZL1 arrives, is ridiculous

As we wait for the future to arrive, Chevrolet and Ford continue to offer the past as well. Not too interested in self-driving electric cars or camera-based mirrors? How about a 650 h.p. Camaro then? The ZL1 Camaro gets a supercharged 6.2-litre making 650 h.p., 650 foot-pounds of torque, and a whole lotta noise. You’ll be able to get a manual version, of course, but there’s also a new 10-speed automatic transmission. The combination is capable of running through the quarter-mile in a claimed 11.4 seconds. The ZL1 should also handle really well too, thanks to GM’s still and light Alpha platform,

I’ve had the pleasure of working for a number of automobile manufacturers in a variety of capacities over the 35 years I spent in the business. All were different in how they conducted business, developed their culture, brand awareness and brought to life their unique DNA throughout their product line. At the end of May 2016, Vancouver luxury vehicle purchasers led all other Canadian cities in volume for this segment, representing 15 per cent of overall car sales in the province, nearly 50 per cent above the national average. When it comes to Acura, while it hasn’t yet attained the perceived level of prestige Mercedes offers or the allure of the driving spirit of a BMW, it does occupy a solid niche in what is becoming a crowded highend vehicle market. There is a distinct difference between German and Japanese DNA in design and manufacturing, with the former striving to bring to market more of a “pure driver” (read aggressive and sporty) offering, and the latter, a less aggressive design and feel, but adorned with

technical innovation. Launched in the fall of 2014 as a 2015 model, the then all-new Acura TLX replaced the slower-selling Acura TL and Acura TSX sedans with great success and the sales numbers quickly exceeded that of the two retired models. The Acura TLX falls decisively in the Japanese stable with a safe, but attractive exterior design, which is augmented with exterior LED lighting. The interior is where the TLX exceeded my expectations — equipped with both heated and ventilated leather seats that were some of the best this six-foot, two inch-body has sat in for quite some time. The trim panels are made from a soft plastic material nicely augmented by an upscale aluminum and wood trim. The dash layout is functional and depicts a sporty feel with an array of information displayed on the two centre stack LCD screens. The automatic transmission selector is a bit of a head scratcher as the normal stick/lever setup is replaced by a series of buttons and rocker switches. This is not unique to Acura — this function seems to be to be a focal point for most manufacturers these days.

It’s almost as if there’s a competition on to design the most radical transmission control layout, a lot of which don’t register with present day owners. Overall the passenger compartment design makes it a pleasant setting to pass hours on the road. Like most Acura’s, the TLX’s list of standard and optional equipment is liberal, heavily oriented toward safety and driver comfort. The Acura DNA shines through with safety and

driver aides including: • Nine airbags • Collision Mitigation • Braking System • Blind spot information • Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning • Road Departure Mitigation • Rear Cross Traffic Monitor • LED fog lights • Ventilated front seats • Front and rear parking sensors • Perimeter/approach

puddle lights • Multi-view rear camera with Dynamic Guidelines All the above are standard in the SH-AWD Elite model. The driving experience whether in city or on winding roads was superb with the all-wheel handling features and power provided by a 3.5L, direct-injected V6 engine with 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. Also, if so inclined, you can shift the nine-speed transmission manually

0

with the paddle shifters for a more sporty experience. I particularly liked the Adaptive Cruise Control, which maintained a driver preset distance between the vehicle in front of you by accelerating or braking automatically without driver input. The overall driving experience would lead me to place the TLX on my shopping list if I was seeking a vehicle in the luxury segment and I believe any driver who tries out this vehicle will also add it to theirs.
