Why name your party after an organization with the same name?

I read that disclaimer/ clarification/pronouncement on Twitter.

I thought it best to begin with the tweet from YES! Vancouver in an attempt to explain why a new Vancouver civic party decided it should adopt the same name as the philanthropic networking group of professional women.

You probably heard Coun. Hector Bremner’s new party is called…Yes Vancouver.

Huh? His choice of name didn’t come as a surprise since he told me in May how fond he was of it. At the time, I mentioned a rumour to him about the possible name of

his new party.

Bremner’s response then: “Good rumour, I like that name. It’s a good one.

Would you like that name? I think it’s a great name. You know the hardest answer to get out of government is that answer. But we’re still going through the process.”

Part of that process, I’ve learned, is talking to YES! Vancouver, which you’ve probably noted capitalizes YES and includes an exclamation point. I also understand YES! is an acronym for Young Executives for Success.

Very subtle differences when spelled out, but not to the ear.

Bremner, who works in public relations, said he wasn’t worried about people confusing the party with the networking group, or viceversa — or the fact he still belongs to the NPA, despite being dumped by the party as a potential mayoral candidate after a nasty scrap.

“We felt it was really critical to say yes to Vancouver, and it’s something very important to us as part of our

story and what we believe in, and what we believe is needed in the city right now,” he told me by telephone last week. “Obviously the names are very similar, but there are some striking differences.

Before I get to some more of what Bremner said, I should indicate I reached out to YES! Vancouver and received an emailed statement from co-chair Connie Chang: “While we are, of course, concerned about another organization using the YES! Vancouver name, we will continue to work towards our philanthropic

purpose of raising money for Dress for Success Vancouver, a registered Canadian charity, whose mission it is to empower women back into the workforce.”

I asked for a follow-up interview, but didn’t get one.

So back to Bremner…

“We’ve heard a lot of no — we’ve heard a lot of no to seniors’ housing, we’ve heard a lot of no to middle-class housing, we’ve heard a lot of no to new rentals, we’ve heard a lot of no to fun and small business. People just want someone to say yes.”

I’m confident that quote will trigger prolific tweeter Kevin Quinlan, who happens to be Mayor Gregor Robertson’s chief of staff, to provide examples where Bremner and the NPA said no to housing and various other projects.

So while Quinlan’s researching votes and preparing his tweets, here’s some more from Bremner when I again asked him about people being confused by two separate entities with identical names, save the caps and

an exclamation mark.

“I’m not worried about confusion about the brands — no. They’re pretty far away from each other in terms of what they do, and what they communicate.

I’m not worried about brand confusion.”

The brand — the political party, that is — will eventually have some names attached to it.

The next step for Bremner and his crew is to nominate or appoint candidates to run in the Oct. 20 election. So far, no one has come forward to challenge Bremner as the party’s likely mayoral candidate. The party is expected to field candidates for council, school board and park board.

Meanwhile, some good news to others thinking of creating a new party less than four months before the election and looking for a name: Maybe Vancouver, Perhaps Vancouver, Absolutely Vancouver and Hell Yeah! Vancouver, I believe, are still up for grabs. @Howellings

New social housing complex named after employee who died in hit-and-run Naoibh O’Connor

Another 70 units of social housing are officially open at 947 East Hastings St. near Campbell Avenue.

The units are in the larger Strathcona Village complex developed by GBL Architects for Wall Financial, which is highly visible on East Hastings thanks to its bright orange exterior. The development also features 280 market condo units.

Mayor Gregor Robertson, speaking at a ceremony to mark Belcourt Residence’s opening, said the social housing units are much needed given the housing and homelessness crisis.

“Vancouver is leading the region when it comes to creating social housing.

We’re very focused on rolling out more and more social housing,” he said. “This is an example of a project that took shape when we did not have enough support from the B.C. government and had to rely on partnerships with

builders and developers in the city like Wall Financial.”

Lookout Housing and Health Society is operating Belcourt Residences. Rents will range between $375 and $1,750 — 24 studio units will rent at shelter rates, 15 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom apartments will rent at Housing Income Limits (HILs) rates of about $950 to $1,215, while the 21 remaining units will rent at the low end of market rates.

The overall development also includes commercial and light industrial space.

Robertson said it will “animate the streetscape.”

“This was kind of a dead block on East Hastings for many years going back to the industrial days along here,” he said. “Now, we’re going to see it really come to life with retail and all the business and trade activity that will happen in this building.”

Robertson said the 70 units are providing a “big boost” to the city’s social housing supply.

Belcourt Residence is

named after Josefa (Josie) Belcourt, a Lookout employee who was killed at age 57 on March 14, 2016, in a hit-and-run in Surrey. She was crossing King George Boulevard at 83rd Avenue to catch a bus to work. The driver was never identified.

Belcourt was a homemaker for Lookout, doing work such as cleaning rooms and laundry.

“People at Lookout, people who work at these organizations that look after the most vulnerable citizens in our city are really unsung heroes,” Robertson said.

“Celebrating their incredible contribution to building community and looking after people is important.”

Her husband Vincent Belcourt, also a Lookout employee, said it “honoured him greatly” that the building was named after his wife.

“When she walked into to a room, everybody wanted to be around her, talk to her,” he told the Courier.

“She had special people that wanted only to have [her] as their worker. She was

amazing. A homeworker is someone who goes in and cleans the rooms and does extra little things for the people. She went beyond that. She would sit and talk with them. It was amazing what she could do. She lit up the whole place when she walked in.”

Lookout executive director Shayne Williams said losing Belcourt was hard on the organization. She brought “heart” to her work, he said, and created a rapport with vulnerable residents in some of the most difficult buildings. He described her personality as vivacious and happy, which was contagious to those around her.

“What we really wanted to capture was that spirit that she had and embody that into a community, into a building,” he said. “That’s our hope — what she brought intangibly and naturally to the organization in every shift that she worked and contributed — that it would be the same kind of feeling within the building.”

Three of nine school board trustees won’t seek re-election Vision’s Joy Alexander retires from politics, Ken Clement is out of the picture, Judy Zaichkowsky is reeling from real estate John Kurucz

Joy Alexander’s got travel on her mind, Judy Zaichkowsky is moving and Ken Clement is no longer running at all.

Outside of those three sitting school board trustees, the remaining six incumbents have confirmed to the Courier they’ll seek re-election Oct. 20.

Clement was announced as a Vision council candidate on June 20 but withdrew his candidacy last week due to health reasons, says Vision spokesperson Michael Haack.

Clement was the first municipal official of First Nations descent in Vancouver’s history when elected to the school board in 2008. He did not respond to multiple interview requests from the Courier.

In Alexander’s case, the current Vision co-chair is leaving politics entirely after first being elected in 2014.

She’d previously retired from teaching and is leaving municipal life to travel.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed being on the school board,” she told the Courier in an email. “Public education is extremely important to me and I welcomed the opportunity to be involved in it. My only regret is that I didn’t run for office earlier in my life.”

Like many Vancouverites, Zaichkowsky’s life is being ruled by real estate right now. The Green Party trustee recently bought a new place in Vancouver and hasn’t sold her previous digs. On top of teaching two classes at SFU’s Beedie School of Business, she’s knee deep in real estate and can’t devote the time to campaigning or serving on the board.

Zaichkowsky garnered the second-highest number of votes of the 18 nominees who ran in the 2017 byelection, finishing only behind eventual board chair and incumbent Janet Fraser.

“I would definitely run in the future but I’m well aware of how much time it takes to do this. And right now I just cannot commit

the time,” she said in an interview.

The Green Party’s 2017 triumvirate was rounded out by Estrellita Gonzalez, who finished third in the 2017 vote.

Along with Fraser, she’ll be joined by Britannia PAC member and IT consultant Lois Chan-Pedley.

Nick Chernen, who manages a clothing store on Main Street, withdrew his candidacy on July 8 after not disclosing to party offi-

cials that he had an active lawsuit before the courts.

“I feel the current board has done a lot to help ‘right the ship’ and now with a new, four-year term could really solidify a plan and take action to make VSB once again the best school district in B.C.,” Gonzalez said in an email.

Given Alexander’s retirement and Clement bowing out, Vision’s three nominees are acclaimed: Aaron Leung, Erin Arnold and

the board’s longest-serving trustee, Allan Wong.

First elected in 1999 and re-elected every term since, Wong’s work plan if re-elected is to hire more teachers and push for all seismic upgrading work to be done by 2030.

“There [is] much to be done to support the district and students,” he said in an email.

First elected in 2011, Fraser Ballantyne will run again under the NPA banner, as will first-term trustee Lisa Dominato.

The party is expected to hold its nomination meeting before the end of July.

“I’m proud of the initiatives I spearheaded to strengthen leadership, accountability and transparency at the VSB in the best interests of students,” Dominato said in an email.

OneCity incumbent Carrie Bercic will return to the fold alongside two other nominees: social justice advocate Erica Jaaf and Jennifer Reddy, associate director of

leadership and community building programs at Simon Fraser University.

Jaff ran in the 2017 byelection, while Reddy served as a program coordinator in the field of the immigrant youth and settlement work with the VSB from 2010 to 2017.

“Moving forward, I will have a strong focus on teacher and staff support, and recruitment and retention,” Bercic told the Courier in an email. “In addition, my focus will continue to be on students in the classroom — most particularly finding ways to ensure students with diverse learning needs get the services they need, supporting our Indigenous students, and making sure critical programs and services are maintained.”

COPE’s nominees include retired teacher Barb Parrott and Diana Day, who served on the VSB’s Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement committee.

Vision’s Diego Cardona seeks redemption in second city hall run Cardona among five Vision candidates chosen Sunday at party’s nomination meeting Diego Cardona is taking another shot at becoming a Vancouver city councillor and got one step closer to his goal Sunday by securing a nomination with

Vision Vancouver.

The 22-year-old Killarney resident was the party’s candidate in last October’s byelection in which he finished in fifth place. That race, which was won by the NPA’s Hector Bremner, was for one position

whereas the Oct. 20 general election gives voters 10 choices on council.

It’s a point Cardona made Monday in an interview with the Courier.

“That helps,” he said of the better odds.

Proposed New Inflation-Adjusted DCL Rates, CAC Targets and Density Bonus Contributions On July 25, 2018, City Council will review two reports which recommend new inflation-adjusted annual rates for Development Cost Levies (DCLs), CAC Targets and Density Bonus Contributions.

DCLs are fees collected by the City of Vancouver from all new development.

CAC Targets are contributions provided by property developers when City Council grants development rights through rezoning. Density bonusing is a zoning tool that permits additional floorspace in exchange for amenities and affordable housing.

These fees help pay for amenities such as parks, affordable housing, childcare centres, libraries,community centres, transportation and other infrastructure that meet the needs of our growing city.

If approved, new rates would come into effect on September 30, 2018.

October was a blow to a party that had not lost an election at city hall since Mayor Gregor Robertson and Vision won power in 2008. The splitting of the left-of-centre vote, residents angry about the high cost of housing and disillusionment with Vision were among factors Cardona cited at the time of his loss.

Racism, he said, was also a factor; Cardona is a former Colombian refugee.

Asked what he learned from his byelection campaign, Cardona pointed to people hurting from the housing crisis and said he and his party “have to be able empathize with that anxiety without being defensive about our record, and articulate a vision that gives people hope and something to vote for and not just against.”

That vision will come with the release of a new housing platform as the campaign rolls out, although Cardona said he supports the Vision-led 10year city housing strategy, which calls for the construction of 72,000 new homes over 10 years, including 12,000 social, supportive and co-operative units for lower and middle income households.

Cardona is one of three renters among Vision’s five council candidates.

The others are Tanya Paz, an active transportation advocate, and Wei Qiao Zhang, a former athlete from China who has worked as a talk show host and constituency assistant to Vancouver-Kingsway NDP MP Don Davies.

Vision’s school board candidates are Aaron Leung, a public education advocate, and Erin Arnold, a parent with professional counselling experience. Lawyer Shamim Shivji and Metis business owner Cameron Zubko are Vision’s park board candidates.

The NPA, meanwhile, has yet to choose any of its candidates aside from mayoral nominee Ken Sim. The party is expected to hold a nomination meeting before the end of the month. Bremner, who was ousted by the NPA as a potential mayoral candidate, has created Yes Vancouver and is expected to name candidates soon.

So, too, is Coalition Vancouver’s mayoral candidate,

Wai Young, who plans to run with a team of candidates for council, school board and park board.

The Green Party’s council candidates are incumbent Adriane Carr, activist Pete Fry, park board commissioner Michael Wiebe and architect David Wong. United Church minister Christine Boyle and Brandon Yan, a non-profit director, are OneCity’s council candidates.

Anti-poverty advocate Jean Swanson, former city councillor Anne Roberts and social justice activist Derrick O’Keefe are COPE’s council candidates, while UBC urban design professor Patrick Condon is seeking the party’s mayoral nomination in August. Greens’ Chernen resigns John Kurucz

Nicholas Chernen’s campaign for a spot at the Vancouver School Board table is over just two weeks after it began.

Chernen resigned Sunday evening after failing to disclose to Green Party officials that he’s part of a lawsuit before the courts against Vancouver Is Awesome V.I.A.’s owner, Glacier Media, also owns the Vancouver Courier.

Chernen issued a statement on Twitter but didn’t respond to an interview request from the Courier Monday morning.

“In 2014, I co-signed legal proceedings with several other petitioners. The actions were not pursued, as it is the responsibility of the petitioners to move it forward,” Chernen’s statement reads. “I believed, mistakenly, that by it not proceeding the issue had been dropped. As a result of my mistake, I failed to disclose my involvement in pending litigation to the Green Party of Vancouver when I was asked as part of my application to be a candidate.”

Green Party chairperson Anthony Hughes said Monday that Chernen remains a party member and will be eligible to run under the Green banner in the future if he chooses to do so.

“We are hoping that he stays involved in some capacity with the party, maybe as a volunteer helping our team get elected,” Hughes said. “I wouldn’t say that the door is completely closed at this point.”

Chernen had been a party member for a couple months only, said Hughes, and his membership will not be revoked.

preme Court of B.C. against V.I.A. and its founder Bob Kronbauer in 2014. Alongside his brother Glen and number of others involved in the fledgling Cedar Party, the suit alleged that V.I.A. was a front company to siphon developer money to Mayor Gregor Robertson and Vision Vancouver.

Chernen also co-filed another lawsuit against Robertson, a case that’s since been dismissed.

Kronbauer said the suit against V.I.A. defamed his company and him personally. The case remains before the courts to this day because the onus is on the petitioners of the claim to book court dates. If they don’t, the case sits indefinitely.

“Imagine being named in a defamatory suit that says the media company you created was a ‘front company’ meant to send illicit donations to a political party — it’s insane,” Kronbauer said in an interview. “It’s been a difficult thing for me to process how people who have never met me, or knew anything about my business, could file a malicious suit like this.”

Chernen’s statement Monday addressed the V.I.A. case specifically and apologized to Kronbauer for the “stress and anxiety the lawsuit has caused.”

“To have this looming over his head and the publication for the past four and a half years, with no conclusion in sight, was wrong. I regret my role in this,” Chernen said.

As for the Greens, Hughes wouldn’t disclose the party’s vetting policies due to privacy concerns but likened the process to the kind of information that would be sought from a prospective employer.

Voting day is Oct. 20.

Vision’s Ian Campbell can’t have his ‘change’ and eat it, too Robertson’s legacy could prove a headache for mayoral hopeful Allen Garr

I knew that Vision’s mayoral candidate Ian Campbell was in for a tough slog the first time I heard him speak. The occasion was last Sunday night’s party for 80 or so Vision volunteers awaiting the results to see who their candidates would be for park board, school board and council.

In a short speech, Campbell said going into this election Vision wants to “be the transformation.” It wants “to be the change.” (Applause.)

On the surface that makes sense. I mean, the NPA’s mayoral candidate Ken Sim was making the same noises when he won his party’s nomination last month. And given the massive turnover that is about to take place on Vancouver’s council, many people are describing this as a “change” election. After all, the majority of people elected to council will never have sat at that table before.

And the same can be said

for whomever is elected mayor — with the highly unlikely exception of NPA defector Hector Bremner.

But here is the problem as I put it to Campbell: If you are pressing for transformation and change, what is wrong with what is going on now?

After all, Vision has held power for the past decade.

He attempted to duck: “We don’t want to see the good work come to a grinding halt.”

To me, that sounds like a stay-the-course position, not one of transition or change.

But what is changing and likely to cause another headache for Campbell is the current mayor, Gregor Robertson, polishing up his legacy on his way out the door.

In the past many months, we have been inundated with announcements of more social housing, more co-op housing, more modular housing and more rental apartments designed for families. All to the good, even though it took Vision three terms to finally get to it.

sented a couple of weeks ago in a back-breaking mass of reports and appendices, had much to commend. Chief city planner Gil Kelley and his staff have the bit in their teeth as it were. It has been all to the good; better late than never.

But wait. While we were all digesting that, Robertson jumps in with a last-minute

policy change. The staff has recommended duplexes in all parts of the city as a way to densify and relieve the housing crisis somewhat.

Then, as was reported by various news outlets, we have the mayor asking city staff to report back next spring on the possibility of allowing “triplexes, quadplexes and other multi-unit

forms to significantly bring down the purchase cost per unit of housing in low density neighborhoods.”

A few things: There is no evidence that this will increase affordability; community consultation would be nice; and Robertson won’t be around to carry the can.

While other mayoral and council hopefuls make those points and express the view that this should really be the business of the next council, Campbell embraces the idea even though it could be the political equivalent of a grenade with the pin pulled.

Meanwhile, as I write this, the four centre-left mayoral hopefuls — Campbell, former NDP MP for Burnaby South Kennedy Stewart, Shauna Sylvester and Patrick Condon — are sitting down with a Vancouver and District Labour Council screening committee seeking the VDLC’s endorsement heading into October’s election.

The committee will make recommendations to their organization’s executive as

well as recommendations about which candidates for park board, school board and council they will endorse. Those recommendations will then be passed on to the VDLC membership for approval next Tuesday.

The front runners for the mayor’s spot would have to be Campbell and Stewart. If Campbell fails to get it, he will still have Vision to back him up in the race. If Stewart fails to secure the endorsement, I’d say he would be done.

Independents have won the mayor’s spot in the past.

But you would have to go back to Tom Campbell and Mike Harcourt, both council veterans when they ran.

When Stewart announced he was thinking of running for mayor, he was contacted by a senior Vision operative and told it would be suicidal. Vision was already courting Campbell at that point.

And then there is the small matter of those folks on the centre-right pushing for change and transformation. @allengarr

Province claws back proposal to pay out teachers for lost prep time Controversial ‘cash-for-kids’ nixed, but who pays for remedy owed to teachers remains unclear Tracy Sherlock

A controversial proposal to pay teachers out for extra prep time or support hours lost during this school year has quietly died.

Good thing, because advocates for children with special needs were appalled by the idea.

“I think it’s unconscionable,” said Faith Bodnar, executive director of Inclusion BC. “I think there are other things they can do to make a remedy for students, which is what we should be talking about here.”

In November 2016, teachers won a Supreme Court battle that reinstated class size limits and limits on the numbers of children with special needs who can be in the same class. When those new rules cannot be followed, teachers and the province agreed that a so-called “remedy” would apply.

Remedy can take the form of extra prep time for teachers, an extra adult in the classroom, or other arrangements as agreed to by both the teacher and management.

This year, because of a shortage of teachers across the province, some teachers have accumulated many, many hours of extra prep time. With no extra teachers in the system, no one was able to cover the extra class time.

Because there are not enough substitute teachers, regular teachers who work with special needs students have often had to cover classrooms for teachers who are off sick. That means children with special needs have lost services and, in some cases, have been told to go home.

So, somehow, the idea arose to pay teachers out the money in lieu of the prep time owed.

“I was really shocked that they would commodify children… that way — that they would think that’s an acceptable solution,” Bodnar said. “I think it’s terrible.”

room rules will be clawed back, but the requirement to give the teachers remedy will remain.

“So, they’ve backed off cash-for-kids. And they’re no longer saying that remedy owed to an individual teacher disappears at the end of June. But now the question will be who pays for it,” Hansman said in an email. “So, remedy still owed to individual teachers for this year will have

to be paid by the district some other way.”

When asked what the Vancouver School Board intends to do about this, the district confirmed in an email they have been told the Ministry of Education will take back any unspent remedy as of June 30 and said the issue has been referred to a provincial level arbitration for resolution.

When asked if the province supports paying out

remedy owed to teachers, B.C.’s Education Minister Rob Fleming said no. He said the province wants to hire teachers and to have learning resources in the classroom.

“Districts manage that.

They are the employer and we have 60 of them,” Fleming said in an interview.”

Bodnar urged the province to take a strong position on this.

“I think there needs to be some strong signals from our Ministry of Education that we’re working really hard… to address the teacher shortage,” Bodnar said.

Meanwhile, Hansman has written a letter to Fleming saying that teachers continue to see full-time positions remain unfilled, as well as teacheron-call shortages in many districts and remedy not being provided in a timely manner.

“These have been problems in both rural and urban areas of the province and are not confined to one region,” Hansman wrote.

Fleming remains hopeful the shortage will abate as new teachers graduate

and others move to B.C. “The difference between other provinces and B.C. is that a young teacher can start a full-time teaching career immediately here, whereas they can expect to be a substitute teacher for years and years in other provinces, struggling to pay their loans,” Fleming said. “That is a major attractor, not to mention the overall beauty and lifestyle of this province.”

Fleming said other ideas to attract teachers — particularly salary related ideas — will be addressed in contract negotiations.

“The contract expires in a year and it could be ratified sooner,” Fleming said.

Fleming’s comments indicate some optimism that upcoming negotiations could go smoothly and even possibly be settled ahead of time. But with CUPE K-12’s president’s council rejecting a tentative contract last week and plenty of issues still to be resolved for teachers, his optimism may be misplaced.

In my opinion both sides need to be able to sit down with one another and feel like they are all equal and valued in these meetings to be able to come up with a way to get what they are fighting for, because then both sides will be able to understand what the other side wants and why they want it, until then, nothing with be solved and neither side will get what they want.

Does the Haida Now exhibit belong in the Museum of Vancouver?

Despite partnering with the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate, the Museum of Vancouver’s Haida Now exhibit raises some uncomfortable questions worth exploring, says Grant Lawrence.

“It belongs in a museum!”

That’s one of Indiana Jones’ most famous lines.

In retrospect, the fictional star of the silver screen and his real life archeolo-

gist contemporaries could be considered misguided, imperialistic grave robbers: they stole from one culture in order to entertain and educate their own, often with an admission fee attached.

Of course it happened here, too. One such story was depicted beautifully on stage in Beyond Eden, the 2010 musical starring Spirit of the West singer John Mann. The show was loosely based on the real-life controversial removal of some of the lastremaining mighty totem poles on Haida Gwaii.

The argument at the time was that the totems needed to be removed so they could be preserved for future generations.

Some of those involved in the removal were supposedly conflicted for years. Wilson Duff, who led the expedition in 1957, committed suicide in 1976.

ing of that sad tale when I saw the advertisements for Haida Now, the current exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver, which runs until June 2019. The exhibit, which Vancouver Awesome has called “powerful,” focuses on the “rich culture, traditions, art, and artifacts of Haida Gwaii.”

The exhibit includes more than 450 Haida items from the MOV’s “extensive collection,” dating back to the 1800s, including baskets, tools, weapons, masks, carvings and more.

The MOV is quick to point out Haida Now is presented in partnership with the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate. I’ve been to that facility, and it’s a beautiful and very moving place. It’s still a museum, but what is most important is that the pieces on display are on the shores from whence they came.

Many of those artifacts have been reclaimed and brought home from dusty museum basements thousands of kilometres away.

The Haida have been extremely proactive in the repatriation of their own artwork and cultural items from the upward of 300 different museums around the world, demanding their rightful return to their islands.

That brings up the most important question when it comes to museum exhibits in 2018: Who gets to control the narrative? The guest curator of the MOV’s Haida Now is Kwiaahwah Jones, who is Haida. It’s her hope that the exhibit serves as a bridge between citizens of Vancouver and the Haida people.

The Haida have, if anything, proven themselves over and over to be as resilient a people as you can find

They don’t talk about it much, but before that apocalypse of the mid1800s, many historians have claimed the Haida both raided for and traded in human slaves, in what some have described as a former driving force of Haida economy.

When they weren’t terrorizing southern tribes with advanced weaponry and superior watercraft, the Haida were creating spectacular art that eventually became so world-famous, much of colonial white culture lazily associated Haida iconography with other First Nations from across North America.

It’s how Haida art became so famous — such as the unceremonious sawing down and removal of totem poles, and outright theft from village and gravesites — that remains so controversial today.

It could be argued that the Haida have also been major leaders in the reconciliation charge, most notably when, on June 3, 2010, the Haida Gwaii Reconciliation Act officially dumped the colonial name of the Queen Charlotte Islands in favour of Haida Gwaii.

It was a major victory recognized by all levels of government, but you can still find the occasional white dude who insists on referring to the archipeligo nation as “the Charlottes.”

By all means, check out Haida Now to learn and understand more about one of the most fascinating cultures in the world. But when you marvel at the intricacies of that beautiful Haida artifact, ask yourself: Does it belong in a museum? @grantlawrence

When Leon Jensen says he’s bringing out the big guns, he’s not making a dad joke, leaning on hyperbole or blowing smoke.

A retired military colonel and president of the Vancouver Artillery Association, Jensen’s life has revolved around big guns for decades.

The newest addition to Jensen’s collection arrived last week in the form of a 2,000-pound Howitzer manufactured in 1918.

Referred to as a QuickFiring 18 Pounder field gun, it’s one of only six in Canada and the only weapon of its type in B.C. It found a permanent home June 28 at the 15th Field Artillery Regiment Museum, located in the Bessborough Armoury in Kitsilano, after decades of collecting dust in Wainwright, Alta.

Now Jensen and the roughly 30 other members of the association are researching its past, while attempting to refurbish it for the present.

“It’s in amazing condition considering it’s been sitting outside for 35 years,” Jensen said. “There is no real rust damage to it, none of the metal has been eaten through.”

The artillery association is affiliated with the Vancouver-based 15th Coast Artillery Brigade. Soldiers in those units fought in the First World War and a handful of other large, historic guns dating back to the 1800s are housed in the Kitsilano armoury.

“Because we’re the guys behind the battles, a lot of our history goes with the guns,” Jensen said. “So we’re trying to get a collection of guns that represent our history.”

The 18 Pounder was a standard issue artillery weapon used on the front during the First World War. It was the gun nearest to the soldiers in the trenches.

battles at Vimy Ridge and in Flanders, Belgium.

Its name reflects the weight of the shells fired, which could travel upwards of seven kilometres. Seven soldiers typically manned each gun.

“Its effectiveness was on the ground through shrapnel, and it was used a lot to cut through barb wired entanglements,” Jensen said.

Whether Jensen’s newest addition was used in battle isn’t clear, though some of the units affiliated with the 15th regiment saw combat in northern Russia.

The prevailing theory is that the 18 Pounder was likely used to train soldiers domestically in Vancouver and Richmond. A pair of 18 Pounders were stationed off Steveston during the Second World War as part of Canada’s coastal defence.

What Jensen and company do know is that it was shipped to Canada from Great Britain in 1945. It bears the cipher of King George V and some of its parts were manufactured in Canada.

Getting the gun to Vancouver was precipitated by a stroke of good timing and good luck. Canadian Forces Base Wainwright was in the midst of renovation work and the 18 Pounder was sitting idle. Jensen’s colleague took a photo of the gun, sent it to him and a plan was put into action.

the gun’s used moving forward isn’t clear. The firing mechanism doesn’t work, and some renovations need to be done.

“There’s probably a bird’s nest down the barrel, but we’re not too sure,” Jensen joked.

The artillery association is updating its website as more about the weapon is uncovered.

Looking up from the top deck of our rental houseboat on Lake Mead, the night sky was alive with stars — thanks to a lack of artificial light for miles.

This being April, the start of houseboat season in Nevada, at night we literally had the lake to ourselves as far as we could see. And during the day we were also mostly alone, with the exception of the curious desert bighorned sheep we spotted one afternoon checking us out from above, numerous birds including vultures, and the odd hopeful fisherman casting for alarmingly large catfish and bluegills, which we watched trolling for food along the red canyon walls that rise above the lake.

But at night the lake belonged to our small group, made up of me and my

husband and two of our closest friends. Being from the city I was initially a little unnerved by the quiet, but it didn’t take long to unwind and begin to appreciate the solitude.

Being that far from other people also meant that when we played our carefully curated playlist of music on the boat’s sound system, we were able to listen to our baby boomer favourites at full blast. Let’s just hope the big-horned sheep appreciated our tunes, which included everything from the Doors to Donna Summer, the Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater, Elton John, the Pointer Sisters and other classics from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.

We were on a 70-foot houseboat from Forever Resorts located in Callville

Bay Marina, about a 30minute drive from Las Vegas, and on the way out for our three-night, four-day adventure we stopped and stocked up on food, wine, water and liquor — we had also each stocked up on books. It’s important to buy everything you need ahead of time because, with the exception of the ice we bought at the marina, once you get out to the lake that’s pretty much it with the exception of a small sundries store. And once you get out on the lake, unless you want to pay a hefty delivery charge, what you brought is what you got.

Our initial plan was to moor at a different spot each night but, as we quickly discovered, positioning the 70-foot Titanium in the wind for the first time was a CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

little more daunting than the simple directions we were given: “Just run it up onto a beach and stake it in.”

First, we didn’t see a lot of actual beaches, but we did find a spot we could tell had been used before. My husband Laurence, with the help of his first mate/friend Doug, ran the boat up onto the side of a hill. And while Laurence held the engine and boat steady in place, Doug and Sue climbed off the front of the boat and hammered tall stakes into the shale base of the hill.

Eventually we got the boat secured and decided the cozy cove we settled on would be an ideal place to spend the next few days.

I imagine the more times you navigate a houseboat of that size around the lake the more exploring you’d feel comfortable with. So, we crossed the Hoover Damn

off our list of day trips and decided to fill the hot tub and relax.

Lake Mead, created in 1935 upon completion of the Hoover Dam, is managed by the U.S. National Park Service and is almost 180 kilometres (110 miles) long with more than 550 miles of shoreline.

Our houseboat was so large the top deck alone included a horseshoe-shaped bar, hot tub, bar fridge, sound system, water slide, party lights and covered flying bridge. It didn’t take long for the hot tub to fill up, but the weather was so warm we ended up draining it and refilling it with cool water.

The main deck held two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, living room with satellite TV and outdoor barbecue. Two more bedrooms were a few steps down from the main

cabin. Our fully-equipped floating condo also came with everything you could possible need for cooking, sleeping or swimming.

Once we got settled our days were filled with coffee on the top deck in the morning, reading and sun tanning in the afternoon and wine and hot/cool tubbing in the evening. We had also borrowed some DVDs from the marina, so we enjoyed a movie night and, no, we did not watch Cape Fear.

Wrestler Calamity Kate vies for Mexican wrestling glory Kate Kroll is headed to Monterrey for a bout with Lucha Libra opponent Lady Flammer Luchadora John Kurucz

Kate Kroll’s idea of a quaint Mexican vacation doesn’t include standard creature comforts such as white sand, endless beaches or cocktail umbrellas.

Instead, she’s headed south specifically to get thrown around, kicked, jumped on and possibly heckled.

All of this will happen in front of hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

And her parents are none too pleased about the whole thing.

So goes the road of the Vancouverite’s odyssey into the world of wrestling. Just two years into her career kicking ass, Kroll — a.k.a Calamity Kate — is travelling to Monterrey, Mexico to vie for a title belt over the weekend of July 13 to 15.

Kroll has two bouts scheduled, including her shot at title glory.

Her opponent goes by the name of Lady Flammer Luchadora and yes,

she wears an ornate mask in keeping with the Lucha Libre style of wrestling.

“It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen. I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t have to go to the hospital,” Kroll said. “The Mexican women are quite aggressive.

They’ve all been wrestling for a long time, so I’m really hoping that I don’t get my butt kicked too hard.”

Kroll is admittedly a bit of a newb in the squared circle, given she’s been wrestling for just two years.

That’s where the name Calamity Kate comes in.

Kroll’s been a burlesque dancer for 10 years, and her stage name while shaking boots carries over to her wresting name when she’s kicking butts.

Parallels exist between both worlds and there are many — fluidity, flexibility and finesse.

“In burlesque, it’s really about the hyper feminine [persona] and almost like a caricature of a woman,” Kroll said. “Whereas with wrestling, it’s really hyper

masculine and almost a caricature of a man.”

Kroll will be wrestling in Mexico as part of the Lucha Libre Feminil wrestling company, which has been staging female-only matches for 17 years.

Lucha Libre differentiates itself from North American wrestling due to a larger emphasis on acrobatics and less reliance on knuckle dragging.

“I find North American

wrestling to be more about fighting and pounding, but Lucha Libre is more fluid and more like a dance, so I’m naturally attracted to that as someone who has danced for their whole life.”

As it turns out, wrestling is kind of a big deal in Mexico. Lucha Libre Feminil founder Luciano García told the Courier via Facebook Messenger that wrestling is second behind only soccer in terms of

national popularity. There are seven venues in Monterrey alone that stage weekly matches.

“Everybody likes wrestling here,” Garcia said.

“It’s like a national sport and everybody wants to see the good versus the bad.”

Competition for new talent is stiff to the point that Garcia has three or four people on staff constantly combing the internet for new faces.

“We love women’s wrestling, we love what we’re doing,” Garcia said. “Always, we have to look for different options. The fans, they always want something new, something different.”

Garcia found something different in Kroll via YouTube shortly after the Vancouverite turned to wrestling in 2016. Kroll and her tag team partner Melody Mangler went to Mexico for an event at that time and her upcoming contests are a continuation of that relationship.

“I saw something different,” Garcia said. “I know

when I book her the first time, she’s some kind of dream.”

Garcia’s dream is a bit of a nightmare for Kroll’s parents.

Dad isn’t a fan.

“My parents hate it,” Kroll said. “My dad worries about me getting hurt. I think they would rather tell their friends that I’m a doctor or a lawyer. This is art in my opinion, and I don’t think they understand that.”

As for her character, Calamity Kate is neither a heel nor a hero. Instead, her niche is her.

“I like to bring my showgirl persona from burlesque but with a punk edge. I don’t like to take shit from anyone and I work hard at what I do,” she said. “I try to work out five times a week, but it’s not so much about trying to get thin. It’s really to be able to lift up a bitch.”

same stereotypical role that I got 20 years ago.”

Turning down work is not something that Sabongui does lightly. His credits include Homeland, The Flash and a Leo Awardnominated turn in the 2017 feature film Drone, in which he played a Pakistani father whose family is killed in a hellfire missile attack.

“This is my career, and it often comes down to pay the bills or sleep at night,” says Sabongui.

“The choice becomes, ‘Accept this role that’s going to make a huge financial difference, or pass on it and make nothing, or take a smaller role and have enough for next month’s rent.’ I’m still caught in that loop.”

Sabongui’s experiences navigating the industry as an actor of colour were the inspiration for Kyra Zagorsky’s award-winning short film, The Prince. It’s about an actor of Middle Eastern descent (played by Lee Majdoub) who turns down the opportunity to play a terrorist in a blockbuster film.

But Sabongui’s story is not unique in Vancouver, a city that is statistically culturally diverse but whose culturally diverse actors face stereotypical roles and fewer opportunities than their Caucasian colleagues.

It’s not even unique to Vancouver. Diversity (or the lack thereof) in Hollywood has been a topic of industry dissection and social media meme-making for years. For every resounding success (Black Panther, Moonlight, Get Out) there are missteps and instances of outright racism that demonstrate there’s still plenty of work to be done — the stats that led to #OscarsSoWhite, Star Wars: The Last Jedi star Kelly Marie Tran leaving social media due to racist and sexist attacks, Scarlett Johansson taking yet another role that wasn’t originally intended for a cishet white woman.

Locally at least, movement is afoot to level the playing field for minority actors.

In June, two local industry organizations held events designed to explore what it means to be a person of colour (POC) in showbiz.

The actors’ union, UBCP/ ACTRA, hosted two roundtables, one specific to Middle Eastern and North African actors, and another for East

Vancouver-based, Egyptian-Canadian actor and producer Patrick Sabongui says he’s encountering the same stereotypical roles he got 20 years ago.

Asian actors. The Vancouver Asian Film Festival held a full-day of Diversity in Filmmaking panels that kicked off the 2018 edition of the Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon (MAMM).

“The conversation is so complex, but the more people we include, we hear a broader voice, and it becomes a collective issue instead of a personal issue,” says Mayumi Yoshida, an actress (The Man in the High Castle) and award-winning filmmaker (Akashi). Along with Nach Dudsdeemaytha, she is the creative producer of MAMM and spearheaded the Diversity in Filmmaking panels.

“It’s not something that this one community has to solve,” adds Yoshida. “It’s all of us.”

Opportunities for local POC actors are often limited because of an expectation held by American productions that the city isn’t diverse enough to warrant casting those roles up here, says Sabongui.

“It’s widely spoken about and it’s overt,” says Sabongui, who moderated one of the UBCP/ACTRA roundtables and sat on one of the MAMM panels. “They come with the expectation that the majority of diverse roles they want to cast, they’re going to have to bring up actors from the States. That cuts into everybody’s bottom lines.”

For Sabongui, the journey to fully actualized diversity within the film industry begins with developing young actors of colour.

“You are never going to get the volume of visible minorities to be the best person for the job if you don’t encourage their devel-

opment from a grassroots level,” says Sabongui. He practises what he preaches through Fulfilling Young Artists, the mentorship program he runs with actor Sage Brocklebank.

Audiences can be part of the sea change, too, by seeking out and actively supporting diverse content.

“When you see good films that are diverse, really talk about it,” says Yoshida. “Be vocal. Let people know how good they are. That itself could lead to another film.”

For her part, Yoshida is determined to motivate artists of colour to value and share their own stories. She did this with Akashi (about a woman who returns to Japan for her grandmother’s funeral). Chinese-Canadian artist Domee Shee notably did it as well with her recent Pixar short, Bao, about a Chinese woman who mothers a dumpling.

“I never thought my perspective or experience was unique, or special, but I’m realizing how the more personal the story is, the more compelling it is to others,” says Yoshida. “Right now, we’re living in a great time where these stories are finally being valued and people are interested.”

One venue through which culturally diverse filmmakers can tell their stories is MAMM, the high-energy filmmaking competition that’s in its 13th year.

MAMM is accepting ideas for one-minute and 10-minute films until July 13; one key creative member of the team (producer, director, writer, cinematographer) must be from a visible minority or of Asian heritage. Details at vaff.org/mamm13.

Counting crows: A UBC postdoctoral fellow has shown that crows’ social behaviour gives it an evolutionary advantage when it comes to battles against its mightier foe, the raven.

Every time you see a group of crows mobbing a raven, seven million years of evolution are at play.

At about the same time that chimpanzees and humans began their separate genetic path, crows and ravens set out on their journey to become distinct

species. Even though a raven might look like a beefed up version of a crow, and they share an equally keen intelligence, their fork in the evolutionary road means they are very different from one another.

Whenever UBC postdoctoral fellow Benjamin Freeman saw crows ganging up on a raven — and winning the altercation — he was intrigued.

Shouldn’t the raven win because it was bigger?

Isn’t the raven’s size supposed to give it an evolutionary advantage?

Freeman wanted to know if his observations were just anecdotal or if there was empirical proof of this behaviour in nature. He turned to the data submitted to Cornell University’s eBird program. (Freeman completed his PhD at Cornell’s department of ecology and evolutionary biology in 2015.)

After filtering through

Ravens will eat crow eggs and baby crows so there’s an evolutionary imperative for the crows to fight back. Since crows have long memories and tend to take things personally — as anyone who has been dive-bombed by a crow can attest — their antiraven behaviour knows no seasonal bounds. They chase ravens year ’round.

“Crows just don’t like ravens,” Freeman says.

And here’s where evolution has favoured crows.

Ravens are solitary and usually frequent wilder habitats, which is why they tend to be outnumbered in urban environments. Crows are social creatures who do well in urban cities where they’ve learned to adapt to the plentiful food sources.

The data showed that what he saw happening at UBC was being echoed across North America.

In angry crow and raven encounters, the crows were nearly always the aggressor — but only if there was strength in numbers.

In 1,357 cases when crows attacked ravens, crows outnumbered ravens; in only five similar situations was the raven the aggressor. That means that in 97 per cent of the time, it was crows chasing ravens.

On the day the presentation centre opened for the first phase of the Fraserview Housing Co-operative, a young teacher dropped by with her two children.

What she said pleased Thom Armstrong, executive director of Co-op Housing Federation of BC and the Community Land Trust.

“Many of her colleagues, who are also teachers, are either moving out of the city or moving out of the province. But now she felt because this housing was being built she had a secure place to stay and she was going to stay in Vancouver,” he said. “That was just the kind of story we were hoping to hear when we envisioned this.”

Armstrong told the Courier this anecdote July 9 as officials, including Mayor Gregor Robertson, gathered to mark the co-op’s opening.

Located at 2910 East Kent Ave. near the Fraser River in the River District, it features 90 units and is geared toward families earning $82,000 to $110,000.

The complex includes four two-bedroom and 32 three-bedroom townhomes, as well as 31 two-bedroom and 23 three-bedroom apartments, which are pet friendly. The City of Vancouver invested city land on a 99-year lease to make the co-op development possible.

Rents will range from $2,050 to $2,750 — about 80 to 90 per cent of market rents in the area. The co-op will operate without any ongoing government subsidy and will require that prospective tenants meet minimum income eligibility requirements to help ensure security of tenure, says the City of Vancouver.

Applications are now being accepted for the units.

About 100 people are going through the presentation centre per day, while a dozen fully completed applications have already been submitted.

The units will be ready for move-in next month.

Armstrong called attention to the fact 55 of the 90 homes in phase one are three-bedroom townhomes or apartments.

“This kind of housing for families today is in desper-

ately short supply,” he said.

He also pointed out homes in phase two — 188 one-, two- and threebedroom apartments in two towers currently under construction nearby on Marine Drive — will be cheaper.

“Because we can package these homes together, the housing charges from phase one generate enough revenue to make phase two even more affordable, with some rents as low as the provincial shelter rate of $375 a month and an average of at least 25 per cent below market,” he said.

The project, Armstrong said, has its origin in the Mayor’s Task Force on Affordable housing in 2012, which included a recommendation to encourage the use of community land trusts to develop affordable housing.

An agreement between the city and the land trust was signed in October 2014 to create 358 units of affordable housing on cityowned sites — 310 units in phase one and phase two of the Fraserview housing co-op, which includes 32 non-co-op units operated

by Tikva Housing Society,

as well as another 48 units at 1700 Kingsway (the Sanford Housing Society).

Robertson called the completion of Fraserview co-op a “big win” considering affordable housing in Vancouver is in short supply.

He said a couple of decades were lost because city, provincial and federal governments stopped focusing on the non-profit housing sector and stopped

supporting the creation of new co-ops.

“It’s only been in recent years we’ve regained that momentum…” he said.

“The non-market housing sector is essential to us achieving more affordable housing in Vancouver. The market will not deliver this kind of housing left to its own devices.”

In May, the city announced another 1,000 housing units will be

developed by the Community Land Trust on seven city-owned sites, targeted towards families earning between $30,000 and $80,000 annually.

“We’ve seen great success now through these partnerships,” Robertson said.

“That’s how we’ll crack the code of getting more affordable housing for people at local incomes. That’s the right supply that we need in Vancouver.”

The Canucks have some difficult decisions heading into the 2018-19 season.

Should they get top prospect Elias Pettersson into the NHL as soon as possible or should he gain some experience in the AHL first? If Pettersson is in the NHL, should he play on the wing or at centre? If Pettersson is on the wing, who’s going to centre the second line behind Bo Horvat?

Then there’s Quinn Hughes, the Canucks’ first round pick from the 2018 entry draft. Is he ready for the NHL? If so, can they convince him to forego another year at the University of Michigan to turn pro? He won’t want to sign a contract if there isn’t a clear path to the NHL, in which case the Canucks will need to move a defenceman or two in a trade.

Moving a defenceman is a necessity if the Canucks want to get younger on the backend. As it is, they’ll enter the 201819 season with the same defence from 2017-18, with no room for Hughes or other young defencemen, like their firstround pick from 2016, Olli Juolevi.

Both Hughes and Juolevi play on the left side, but it’s a right side defenceman, Chris Tanev, who likely has the most trade value. Should they trade Tanev before next season for prospects and draft picks, risk him getting injured again in the 2018-19 season and losing trade value, or keep him to mentor and partner with their young defencemen?

That’s barely scratching the surface of the difficult decisions facing the Canucks right now. There’s one decision, however, that should be absurdly easy: when to retire the Sedins’ numbers.

It’s absolutely a “when” and not an “if.” The Sedins’ numbers will be retired.

The only question is when it will happen and it shouldn’t really be a question. The Canucks should retire the Sedins’ numbers as soon as possible.

That should mean sending “22” and “33” to the rafters at the first home game of the 2018-19 season. Conveniently, that first home game will also be the season opener. Even better, the game is against the Calgary Flames, a longtime rival that the Sedins ate alive throughout their careers.

The choice should be obvious: kick off the 2018-19 season with a ceremony honouring the greatest Canucks of alltime, figuratively passing the torch to the Canucks’ youth.

According to TSN’s Jeff Paterson, however, the Canucks are considering waiting until the 2019-20 season to retire the Sedins’ numbers as part of the team’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Paterson called it a “better than 50/50 chance.”

On the one hand, it makes some sort of sense to honour the best players in the

franchise’s 50-year history as part of the 50th anniversary. There’s also plenty of precedent: teams frequently wait several years before retiring a player’s number.

Paul Kariya and Scott Niedermayer, for example, are both in the Hockey Hall of Fame and have both been retired for eight years, but the Anaheim Ducks have only just announced that their numbers will be retired this coming season.

On the other hand, why wait? Everyone knows the Sedins’ numbers will be retired and there’s no need to drag this out longer than it needs to. Just because other teams wait too long to retire numbers doesn’t mean the Canucks should do the same.

There is a misconception, in the automotive world, that electric cars are a bit boring. Mostly, this is because early electric efforts have been marketed as an economical and environmental proposition, and it’s a bit hard to get excited about something like a Nissan Leaf unless you’re wearing hemp underwear.

Tesla has moved the excitement meter a little, but remains a sort of modern-day electric AMG. They’re great at straight-line acceleration, but tend to overheat at the track. It’s early days yet.

However, the real saviour of electric performance might end up being Volkswagen. Partially due to getting soot on their face with the whole TDI diesel scandal, VW’s been pouring money into electric-powered vehicles. Their I.D. subbrand has a few projects on the way, including (naturally) a crossover and a rebirth of the beloved VW van.

To drum up interest in EVs, VW decided to have a go at breaking the electric record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this year, and ended up smashing everyone’s expectations.

Because electric power isn’t affected by altitude,

their I.D. R racing machine was perfectly suited to the thin Colorado air.

With twin electric motors cranking out 600-plus horsepower, and huge downforce to handle the corners, the I.D. R set the overall course record in less than eight minutes.

Of course, the I.D. R is a racing machine built for a single purpose (and a single driver). However, the writing on the wall is good news: electrification is the future of performance, but that doesn’t mean we have to slow down.

Another record that fell this week to an electrified machine was the course record at the Nürburgring.

Used as bragging rights by many manufacturers, lap times at the tricky, bumpy and narrow Nürburgring are often used to show off a brand’s engineering prowess.

Now, the Porsche 919 Evolution, a reworked version of their Le Mans winning endurance racer, has absolutely shattered things.

With driver Timo Bernhard at the wheel, the hybrid 919 decimated the decades-old lap time around the track, reaching speeds as high as 360 kilometres per hour.
