Chinatown bao bei
Chinatown shakes your senses awake. With so much to see, do and, of course, eat, Adrienne Matei, VITA Vancouver editor, suggests how to take on the neighbourhood. A National Historic Site of Canada and one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Chinatown is rife with character, history and, of course, secrets. While we may not have the scoop on trapdoors and underground passageways (they’re there, though), when it comes to casually exploring this vibrant ’hood, we know exactly what to do. Upon arrival, take a quick art tour of the neighbourhood, starting at Centre A (for contemporary Asian art, with a well-stocked reading room). Then hit East Georgia to tick off Access Gallery, 221A and Publication Studio (the latter being an artist bookshop and micro-publishing house). You can stay abreast of events and news by subscribing to Vancouver Instant Coffee, a what’s-up-in-the-art-world newsletter, and welcome to being in the know. For shopping, stock up on bitters, shakers and Pok Pok Som Thai Basil Drinking Vinegar at Modern Bartender (the folks who work there don’t all have handlebar mustaches and sleeve garters, but they should). Clothing-wise, hit el Kartel for street-cool, Blim for creative prints (sushi pants!), Charlie & Lee for the
CRaCKLe CRÈMe
impossibly chic art-girl look and The Board of Trade for Hansel from Basel socks, which are expensive, but the coolest ever. Peckish? Kim Saigon’s banh-mi, ordered from the front-of-house cashier, means perfect baguettes, crispy tofu, house-pickled veg with cilantro and sliced chili – $4 a pop. To meet the debit minimum, snag a can of lychee juice, too (if you choose to eat in, the pho is just the trick on a rainy day). The world’s best bao are at new Town Bakery, though Dunlevy Snack Bar offers a solid Tuesday beer-and-bao special (and boasts DJ sets and walls stacked with contemporary Vancouver art to boot). When dinner calls, head to Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie, especially
the pie shoppe
if you’re in a sexy mood (try the marinated eggplant and creamy chickpea Shan tofu). Newly opened Sai woo serves Cantonese-and Jamaican-inspired fare in a room decorated with Persian ironwood boughs (don’t miss the rare-beef salad or the scallion-oil fried rice). For dessert, sate your sweet tooth at Crackle Crème, specializing in perfect brûlées, or hit The Pie Shoppe: a cute hole-in-the-wall with some of the city’s best pie, the flavours of which are announced daily via tweets that read like short-form poems (Apple. Cherry Buttermilk. Salted Honey). When dusk falls and the neon glows, hit The Keefer Bar for drinks and Thursday-night burlesque, Bestie for late snacks and Fortune Sound Club for Hip Hop Karaoke, one (rotating) Monday of each month. If it’s décor you’re after, Yaletown’s chic espace d. just moved to Water Street, or try the new, gilded and sumptuous Versace Home. Meanwhile, Old Faithful caters to an urban-earthy clientele and is the best place ever to buy gifts for guys (soon to open in Toronto, as well). Also expanding (naturally, into Portland) is home and accessory darling Litchfiel, where everything from axes to chocolate bars find their most stylish iteration and you’ll finally understand the term “glamping.” Wonder where hipsters get their glasses? Since opening in 2014, the sharpest ones have come from Bailey nelson – an Australian brand that chose Vancouver for its first Canadian outpost and will be getting an in-house optometrist soon. If you’re seeking cool-casual wear (who isn’t these days), new Kit & Ace decided to make silky technical cashmere a “thing,”

and with aplomb (the brand’s T-shirts feel like pudding). Meanwhile, Columbia Street’s STR/Ke MVMT ups the city’s sportswear game with pieces that reference vintage athletics club clothing, but feel modern and cool (and, like if you wear them, you need to be able to throw a good punch). It’s also got self-designed footwear that’s Vancouver’s answer to Nike, plus a little inner café to grab a healthy snack while you shop. Speaking of snacks, hellooo Gastown. We’ll give you the quick and dirty. Meat & Bread’s porchetta sandwich will whiteout your vision for three seconds (the local minichain is expanding to Seattle), while Bambudda’s Top Chef Curtis Luk serves up adult versions of his Hong Kong childhood favourites.
Purebread Bakery offers a “crack bar,” which is sweet and salty – but, whatever, we had you at “crack bar” – and Mosquito (nuzzled next to Orling and Wu) is a super-new Champagne and dessert joint with a sexy interior and (hopefully) an enthusiasm for puns about “bites.” Little sibling restos really shine, with nicli’s next Door opening adjacent to its pizzeria big sister and perfect for wine and Italian nibbles (meatballs and tuna conserva), and Tacofino’s new burrito bar serving up chicken karaage, tempura cod and even vegan burritos at the mouth of the venture’s new 3,000-square-foot (plus patio!) flagship. Treat-seekers must hit freshly opened Soft Peaks ice cream, for not-toosweet soft serve topped with a drippy golden hunk of honeycomb or chocolate Tim Tam biscuits and pure maple syrup. Also excellent: Timbertrain coffee roasters, for a smooth espresso after a big meal. Enjoy nightlife at new creative club venues like Alexander and 303 Columbia, which eschew cheesy club glitz for a welcoming community feel. AdRiENNE MATEi

If we declared Mount Pleasant “Vancouver’s coolest neighborhood” or anything like that, everyone on Main Street would simultaneously suffer a scintillating chill and start thinking about moving to HastingsSunrise. Yes, yes, it’s full of fixie-riding toque-wearers; embrace it. Mount Pleasant is endlessly awesome to explore.

The good people at Radicle Juice make a smoothie called The Engineer, which has spinach in it but tastes like a mint-chocolate-chip milkshake. Don’t Argue Pizzeria’s mashed-potato béchamel pie is unmissable, as is a stop at The Fish Counter for fried cod and coleslaw (we think their crab cakes, available at the deli, are the city’s best). But before you fill up...

sleuth for sausage Propelled by a rumour, we barrelled out the back door of Kafka’s Coffee & Tea (amazing pour-overs!) to find... a parking lot. About to dismiss overheard talk of a cool hidden factory, we caught the unmistakable waft of – yes – sausage in the air (hey, we’ve been to enough Croatian weddings to know). At that moment
we looked down to see a hotdog shape carved into the concrete beneath our feet and, taking in a lungful of cured meat smell, distinctly thought, “This, this is journalism.” The Original Sausage Haus is imperceptibly tucked away, but makes some of the city’s best links from Chilliwack pork, including the only Camembert-rind dry-cured sausage in Canada (the family-run business has been making
it for six generations). You can get their salami with Kafka’s grilledcheese sandwiches right at the source (do it). End with drinks at The narrow and dancing at The Fox, (which, starting June 20 is launching a Saturday night dance party called LOVE) and your day will be about as pleasant as they come. summer beers
Vancouver’s craft beer explosion has resulted in so many new beers the options can be a little daunting. And now that summer’s here, everyone needs to know: What should I be drinking?
It’s an excellent questions, folks. Here’s a list of light, easy-drinking beers perfect for that patio, that stoop, that patch of grass down the block... or wherever you prefer to soak in the rays with a glass o’ beer.
we needed to throw a lager on here. But this isn’t your average lager – not by a long shot. It’s clean, crisp and surprisingly full of flavour from the traditional German lager yeast. Kokanee this is not.
33 ACRES Of SUNSHINE
HONEY ALE
(33 AcRES BREwiNg)
A beer that seems engineered for summer drinking. Just look at that name. It’s a light and hazy wheat beer and very approachable for people who think they hate beer.
BLONDE ALE (POSTMARk BREwiNg) A light and highly drinkable brew, made for drinking more than a few. It’s also the first local craft beer distributed in a 12 case. Camping, anyone?
BOTTLE ROCkET
(PhiLLiPS BREwiNg)
It’s an oldie, but a goodie, and arguably Phillips tastiest and most refreshing beer. A light and hoppy India session ale with hints of grapefruit flavour.
BURNABARIAN
(dAgERAAd BREwiNg)
Burnaby’s Dageraad excels at making delicious Belgian beers and their session ale is a great introduction. Like every other beer on this list, it’s light and refreshing, but has a unique and robust flavour that’s highly approachable.
CRAfT LAgER
(PARALLEL 49 BREwiNg)
Vancouver’s breakout brewery has a few beers geared for summer drinking, but 14
(dOgwOOd BREwiNg)
The city’s first organic brewery is also making some of the finest introductory craft beers in British Columbia. Their Honey Ale is as sweet as the name suggests, but very well balanced. If you want to introduce your grandparents to craft beer, this is the one. It’s available only at the brewery by the glass or in growler fills.
PARk LIfE
(BOMBER BREwiNg)
Bomber’s passion fruit ale has been extremely popular since its six packs were released. It’s really no wonder ¬ it’s clean, fruity (obviously) and hardly tastes like beer at all. It’s another beer ideal for beginners, but easily enjoyed by all.
ROxANNE (STRANgE FELLOwS BREwiNg) This black raspberry grisette is technically a sour beer, but the sourness is balanced by a hearty dose of raspberries, making for a complex and deeply refreshing beer. It’s tart more than sour, and absolutely worth your time. It’s a limited release available only at the brewery, so get it while you can. STEPhEN SMySNUik

T
The pros of going to a music festival are evident: a spirited atmosphere, the chance to pragmatically condense a lifetime of awesome concerts into one weekend, ice cream sandwiches and beer for lunch... but festivals do present one key challenge, namely, how to navigate the increasingly perplexing world of “festival style.” Are flower crowns still a thing? Why are millennials bringing back mom-butt denim when we fought so hard to get past it? Don’t fret; from Pemberton to Osheaga, these style picks will keep you fresh and fierce throughout the festival circuit

Lifting our spirits this month is a new exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver. The Happy Show, by Stefan Sagmeister, offers thoughts and recommendations based on the Austrian designer’s own decadelong exploration of happiness. From April 23 to September 7, the exhibit literally takes over MOV, filling the museum’s galleries, stairwells, hallways and restrooms with infographics, video projections and interactive installations all meant to ask the question: what makes us happy? 1100 chestnut St., 604-736-4431 Museumofvancouver.ca

Q+A with Vancouver Foodie, Erin Ireland
Here, Erin serves up her knowledge like a blue plate special, covering a little bit of everything to satisfy everyone’s taste. It’s an insider’s guide for the local foodie in us all; five questions that piqued my curiosity about Vancouver’s food scene and Erin’s healthy, local insights. when it comes to multiculturalism, what are a few Vancouver eateries that define the city’s culinary landscape? we really are so incredibly lucky to have such a diverse food scene here in Vancouver. Looking for Burmese cuisine? head to Amay’s house. Vietnamese? Mr. Red cafe
sheRRi Koop
Food reporter and owner of itstodiefor.ca, Erin Ireland is currently focused on a variety of food styling projects, developing a new line of vegan cookies and improving itstodiefor.ca’s function as a Vancouver dining guide. And yes, she still makes her signature (butter-free) macadamia nut and chocolate banana bread for To Die For Fine Foods.
is your spot. Japanese? it’s been said that Vancouver’s best sushi is comparable to the ‘good stuff’ served in Japan. Some of our city’s most notable Asian bites are found at Miku or Minami, two Japaneseowned restaurants who fly their chefs in from Japan. Try their charcoal flame seared Aburi Salmon Oshi, which has earned legendary status among food-focused Vancouverites. with farm to table continuing to penetrate the local-food movement, increasingly, chefs want to tell their food’s story to diners. who’s doing it best and making a real impact?
chef dave gunawan of Farmer’s Apprentice. you never know what you’ll find on his menu because it changes so frequently. he cooks what the farmers bring him and it’s always exciting and different. chef karen Mccathy of graze not only supports small hyper-local suppliers, like inner city Farms (who grow crops in backyard residential gardens around Vancouver), she produces dozens of fruits, vegetables and herbs in her own restaurant’s backyard. you’ll be impressed to hear her talk about any of her dishes—they and their ingredients all have a story. 25
To what do you attribute the success of street food and who are some of your favourite food trucks? Who’s who’s making a unique impression on the scene?

For foodies looking to explore Vancouver and B.C. this summer, what events should be on their must-see list; do you have a particular favourite that you return to annually? cart Fest under Cambie cambie Food Cart Bridge, which features over twenty trucks and vendors on any given Sunday is always fun and such a great opportunity to sample a little go with a group bit of everything. Go and an appetite. wine festivals in the Okanagan (there Wine are several) are also huge musts every summer. The rolling hills of the italy valley really do transport you to Italy and our vines are producing better tasting wine every year.

who are the up-and-coming chefs Who to watch for around town and what are they doing that puts them on your radar? chef Brian Skinner, who recently Chef moved on from his first restaurant, he’s up to something The Acorn. He’s new and exciting and there’s no doubt in my mind it will be incredible. No one in the city cooks food quite like Brian. Vegetables are his focus and he cooks them because he loves them – this is evident in the end result. Ii love that he doesn’t rely on bacon or pork fat to make his food delicious, like so many chefs around the world do. his cooking will help you fall in His love with plants at a deeper level. chef Juno Kim kim is another one to Chef watch for. This young up-andcomer is gaining a huge following thanks in part to his Monday night pop-up dinners at 33 Acres Brewing Co. co. He he also hosts food styling courses where participants can learn the secrets behind his incredible plating techniques.
Street food is fun and accessible. you can bring your dog and enjoy You some fresh air while you eat. Many of the chefs behind these mobile operations are driven by the simple desire to cook and share their food. They’re not in it for the money; they do it because they love it.
He’s up to something new and exciting and there’s no doubt in my mind it will be incredible.
Food truck meals are generally less expensive than what you’d find at brick and mortar eateries, and certain trucks (like Vij’s Railway) serve high-end restaurant caliber dishes at street food prices. With with over 55 food trucks serving everything from vegan salads to breakfast sandwiches on our Vancouver streets, there’s a little something for everyone. Three of yolk’s, my favourite food trucks are Yolk’s, Culvercity Salads and Tacofino. TRAcEy RAYSON RAySON TRACEY
romantic reads If you’re in the mood for love-as-subject-matter, our book picks suit perfectly.
ADA OR ARDOR Vladimir Nabokov This is a read for languorous days (cashmere blankets and fireplaces are fitting accoutrements to the forest-thick prose). The book itself takes the form of a manuscript by Van Veen, punctuated by notes from his love Ada, as he attempts to document their complicated lifelong affair (how complicated?) Turns out, they’re siblings.
THe LOVe AFFAiRS OF nATHAnieL P Adelle waldman Clever and entertaining, this slim read documents the experiences of Nate, a self-congratulatory 30-somethings writer enjoying his first taste of success. Nate suddenly has his pick of eligible women and deludes himself (but not the reader) that he’s capable of feeling more than contempt for others. An awesome take down of the male psyche.
ATTACHMenTS Rainbow Rowell The author’s writing is addictive to start, and particularly so when she’s spinning a story about love. In Attachments, an IT guy falls hard for his co-worker, sight unseen, when he’s tasked with monitoring her emails. The result: an awkward, agonizing and totally appealing romantic read.
nORweGiAn wOOD haruki Murakami An achingly beautiful tale of love and loss, we’re drawn into Toru Watanabe’s reminiscences about relationships with two enigmatic though dramatically different women from his youth. Elegiac and atmospheric, this one’s for those whose passions defy conventional definition.
THe HISToRy oF LoVe Nicole krauss Smart, complex and constantly weaving across time and space, this novel illustrates how a love between two people can, quietly, affect many more. Across generations and from Second World War Germany to New York City, it’ll have you wondering what incarnations of love might be out there, unknown, surviving in the wild.
SupeR SAD TRue LoVe SToRy gary Shteyngart It’s near-future New York and social media’s crazy, civil unrest is brewing and schlumpy, middle-aged Lenny Abramov is totally devoted to cool, young Eunice Park. Standout details? A super-tight extension of the “jeggings” trend and perfect simulacrums of e-correspondence between 20-somethings.
