Planet Bingo It’s not often you find a business that is seemingly untouched by technological advancements or the ebbs and flows of the marketplace.

sponsored content

Vancouver’s Planet Bingo is that business. It’s been going strong for three decades and is still standing at its original location at the War Memorial building on Main Street near 10th Avenue. Far from being an outing that is solely for seniors, the daily games attract every corner of society and age demographic over the legal age of 19. There’s the traditional paper bingo available for those who prefer the oldschool way of physically dabbing their cards, but becoming more popular is electronic play!

“Particularly with most of the players that come in regularly, this is their community and this is their family,” says Planet Bingo marketing manager Abby Dy. Cashing in on a sweet pay day is an added bonus and in the last two years Planet Bingo has had four winners cash in $100,000 each! Several daily Bingo Progressive Specials can net players between $5,000 to $10,000 as well.

Harrison Hot Springs Popular Sasquatch Festival takes place July 16 +17

The sun has finally made an appearance and whether you’re wrapping up school for the semester or considering a short getaway from your full-time job, a day trip or weekend away from the city is a great way to take a break without breaking the bank. And that’s where Weekender comes in. We’ve filled this edition with ideas for road trips and day trips and included a list of outdoor patios in case you’ve left the car at home and are looking for a hot place to enjoy a cool adult beverage.

We also discovered that Harrison Hot Springs has an entire festival dedicated to the elusive sasquatch, as well as some really good hiking, paddling and cycling routes. And when it comes to Whistler, you don’t have to be into extreme sports to enjoy this mountain paradise in the spring and summer. So check out Weekender for tips and ideas for spending spring and summer in and around the city — just don’t forget the sunscreen.

Sandra Thomas sthomas@vancourier.com

Harrison Hot Springs makes for a great road trip — whether you’re spending a day or the weekend. Bonus: it’s less than two hours from Vancouver. And whether you’re looking to lie on the beach, hike, kayak, cycle or soak in the hot springs, there are so many things to do in Harrison you can take the entire squad and everyone will be happy — with the exception of you know who, because she’s never happy.

entertainment and, most importantly, talks on the sasquatch from Sts’ailes experts and local Harrison Hot Springs sasquatch investigators. The word sasquatch is thought to be a mispronunciation of the Sts’ailes First Nations word ‘Sasq’ets,’ meaning “hairy man.” For centuries, the sasquatch has occupied a unique niche in the oral traditions of the First Nations communities of Harrison Lake and Harrison River and the Sts’ailes believe the sasquatch is a spiritual being that can vanish into the spirit realm at will, which may explain why the elusive being is so difficult to track down. The spheres are built to withstand impact and the web of rope, much like a spider’s web, attaches to many strong points. Its stretchiness enables each sphere and the trees to move freely. The well-appointed interiors eliminate the need to rough it in the deep forest. The design of each sphere is a marriage between tree house and sailboat technology. Wooden spheres are built much like a cedar strip canoe or kayaks, while suspension points are similar to the chain plate attachments on a sailboat. Stairways hang from a tree much like a sailboat shroud hangs from the mast. There are only two sides to a sphere — inside and out. Here are details about all three of Vancouver’s Car Free Day happenings this year on Main Street, the West End and on Commercial Drive — Kitsilano will hold community block parties on June 16 and 17 and June 30 to July 2 this year. West End June 16: Noon - 7 p.m. Denman between Davie and Robson Denman Street from Davie to Robson will be closed to vehicle traffic June 16 and replaced with a street festival fun for the whole family. For West End Car Free Day, local businesses come together to give locals and visitors a taste of what they have to offer. Many restaurants extend their patios and, considering how many terrific restaurants are packed into this area, there will definitely be lots to eat and drink. 12

summer 2018

There is such a thing as a free ride George Baugh believes that selecting wine should be tailored to whatever experience the consumer wants; you won’t want to bring the same wine to a barbecue and a formal dinner. Some people pay no mind to varied aromas or aftertastes, while others specifically seek out wines with complex characteristics. As manager of St. Regis Fine Wines & Spirits, Baugh is happy to help any customer type. “An everyday wine where you’re spending maybe $20 or $25, all you need is that it tastes like grapes and doesn’t have any kind

of offensive flavours in it,” Baugh says. “But if you’re spending more money, you want to have more depth of flavour in there.” Summertime brings with it white wines and rosés, along with white spirits: gin, white rum or vodka. Smirnoff Sourced vodkas are a particular seasonal favourite, and come in both grapefruit and watermelon flavours. St. Regis Fine Wines & Spirits is located next to the Tim Horton’s in the Granville SkyTrain station and is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Free bus will take you to Golden Ears Park from Vancouver this summer Lindsay William-Ross | lindsay@vancouverisawesome.com

At 62,540 hectares, Golden Ears is one of the largest parks in B.C. and popular for its extensive trail system for hikers and equestrian use. Golden Ears also is home to Alouette Lake, a popular spot for swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, canoeing, boating and fishing — and now you can travel there for free. Operated by Vancouver-based Environmentally Sound Transportation, Parkbus will run every Saturday and Sunday, starting July 7 and ending Sept. 2, with departures from MEC’s Vancouver store (130 West Broadway) in the morning, returning in the late afternoon. You’ll need to pre-book your seat online with a credit card deposit (to prevent no-shows) — the reservation system opens in mid-June. Ahead of your reserved trip, riders will get safety information and park details via e-mail. While on board, you can learn about Leave No Trace principles from a ride facilitator. And if your summer plans find you in Edmonton, Montreal or Toronto, those cities also have Parkbus services running this year.

“Do you have room on the patio?”

There’s a reason Vancouverites, who get impatient when their iced cold foam Cascara Cold Brew takes a few minutes too long to make, will wait an inordinate amount of time for the perfect seat on an outdoor patio.

Some people may want structure, while others prefer to go where the wind takes them. Natasha Mitchener is happy to accommodate any type of traveller through her Osoyoosbased business, Wine Tours Gone South.

What that experience entails is entirely up to the visitors.

Indulge

“We’re very generous with our time because I don’t want people to feel rushed,” Mitchener says. “I know how to schedule myself but I don’t want my customer to feel like they’re on a schedule. It’s supposed to be spontaneous.”

South Okanagan Tours

Each of Mitchener’s three tour packages cover between two and six wineries and range in price between $75 and $125 per person.

For reservations contact Natasha:

Prior experience in vineyards or understanding the many nuances of wine aren’t necessary.

250-498-7501

“A wine tour is a great place to start to learn about the industry, about the wines, about how to pair wines, and the history of our valley,” Mitchener says. “There are so many things you can learn on a wine tour and you do not have to be a professional.”
