The sun has finally made an appearance and whether you’re wrapping up school for the semester or considering a short getaway from your full-time job, a day trip or weekend away from the city is a great way to take a break without breaking the bank. And that’s where Weekender comes in. We’ve filled this edition with ideas for road trips and day trips and included a list of outdoor patios in case you’ve left the car at home and are looking for a hot place to enjoy a cool adult beverage.

We also discovered that Harrison Hot Springs has an entire festival dedicated to the elusive sasquatch, as well as some really good hiking, paddling and cycling routes. And when it comes to Whistler, you don’t have to be into extreme sports to enjoy this mountain paradise in the spring and summer. Harrison Hot Springs makes for a great road trip — whether you’re spending a day or the weekend. Bonus: it’s less than two hours from Vancouver. Rainbow Falls This eight-hour guided trip has you paddling up the east side of Harrison Lake to beautiful Rainbow Falls. Hop out for a short hike to the falls.

The Sasquatch Festival: July 16 +17 The festival begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with a short procession to Harrison Lake Plaza where a welcoming ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. This intercultural celebration includes canoe races, traditional salmon barbeque, medicine walks, cultural boat tours, arts and crafts, games, 8

entertainment and, most importantly, talks on the sasquatch from Sts’ailes experts and local Harrison Hot Springs sasquatch investigators. The word sasquatch is thought to be a mispronunciation of the Sts’ailes First Nations word ‘Sasq’ets,’ meaning “hairy man.” For centuries, the sasquatch has occupied a unique niche in the oral traditions of the First Nations communities of Harrison Lake and Harrison River and the Sts’ailes believe the sasquatch is a spiritual being that can vanish into the spirit realm at will, which may explain why the elusive being is so difficult to track down. Vancouver Island, are designed to fit into a forest setting without altering it. The spheres are built to withstand impact and the web of rope, much like a spider’s web, attaches to many strong points. Its stretchiness enables each sphere and the trees to move freely. The well-appointed interiors eliminate the need to rough it in the deep forest. The design of each sphere is a marriage between tree house and sailboat technology. Wooden spheres are built much like a cedar strip canoe or kayaks, while suspension points are similar to the chain plate attachments on a sailboat. Here are details about all three of Vancouver’s Car Free Day happenings this year on Main Street, the West End and on Commercial Drive — Kitsilano will hold community block parties on June 16 and 17 and June 30 to July 2 this year. West End June 16: Noon - 7 p.m. Denman between Davie and Robson Denman Street from Davie to Robson will be closed to vehicle traffic June 16 and replaced with a street festival fun for the whole family. For West End Car Free Day, local businesses come together to give locals and visitors a taste of what they have to offer. Many restaurants extend their patios and, considering how many terrific restaurants are packed into this area, there will definitely be lots to eat and drink. 12

Main Street June 17: Noon - 7 p.m. Main Street between Broadway and 30th Avenue Spanning a whopping 21 blocks of Main Street, this vehicle-free family-friendly event is a great way to explore one of Vancouver’s coolest neighbourhoods. Main Street Car Free Day runs from Broadway all the way to 30th, and has an impressive 15 stages and mini festivals along the street. It’s the largest Car Free Day event in Vancouver. Check out Main Street’s many stores, restaurants and businesses. Enjoy street hockey, skateboarding, a Binners’ Project drop-off site, all sorts of live performances from local talent, a kids’ zone and tons of music. Commercial Drive July 8: Noon - 7 p.m. Commercial Drive from Venables to North Grandview Known for embracing green spaces, celebrations and working together, Vancouver’s Commercial Drive — known to many as simply the Drive — is one of the city’s most unique communities. This year, Car Free Day on the Drive takes place takes over 15 blocks of Commercial Drive with local artisans, musicians, activities, entertainment and plenty of food. Other highlights include a bike valet and healing garden. This is where Car Free Day in Vancouver began, so this neighbourhood knows how to do it right.

At 62,540 hectares, Golden Ears is one of the largest parks in B.C. and popular for its extensive trail system for hikers and equestrian use. Golden Ears also is home to Alouette Lake, a popular spot for swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, canoeing, boating and fishing — and now you can travel there for free. Operated by Vancouver-based Environmentally Sound Transportation, Parkbus will run every Saturday and Sunday, starting July 7 and ending Sept. 2, with departures from MEC’s Vancouver store (130 West Broadway) in the morning, returning in the late afternoon. You’ll need to pre-book your seat online with a credit card deposit (to prevent no-shows) — the reservation system opens in mid-June. Ahead of your reserved trip, riders will get safety information and park details via e-mail. While on board, you can learn about Leave No Trace principles from a ride facilitator. And if your summer plans find you in Edmonton, Montreal or Toronto, those cities also have Parkbus services running this year.
