WELCOME MESSAGE FROM OCB PRESIDENT SCOTT SIMMONS
n behalf of the Ontario Craft Brewers (OCB), I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2022 Ontario Craft Brewers Conference and Supplier’s Marketplace (OCBC). Now in its 11th year, Canada’s largest craft beer conference is going to be the biggest and best OCBC yet! We are also thrilled to be back at the beautiful Niagara Falls Convention Centre again, for the first time after a long three-year hiatus due to Covid 19. It is great to be back!
This conference comes at an important time in Ontario’s craft brewing industry. It has been a difficult period for our industry over the course of the pandemic, and now is the time to rally together to continue the growth we saw over the past decade. The industry has grown from a handful of breweries to now over 320 bricks and mortar breweries, and it just keeps getting bigger. Figures released right before the pandemic hit showed that local Ontario brewers employed over 4,600 people, representing 80% of all jobs in the brewing industry in Ontario, and supports thousands of jobs in tourism, agriculture, construction, packaging, and other related industries. All told, the craft sector now contributes over $2 bil lion to Ontario’s economy each and every year.
We have also seen craft beer market shares grow at double digits year over year, currently reaching 11.2 per cent of the total industry. This has happened in a restrictive sales environment, and we truly believe that with the right reforms, our industry can continue to grow if consumers have greater opportunity to see, experience, and choose your products.
Behind those numbers are dedicated people like you. People investing in communities large and small right across this province to create jobs, create investment and create opportunity. This
Ocommitment is also building a community beyond the physical breweries. It’s a community of people driven by a singular commitment to produce highquality beer, made with fresh, all-natural ingredi ents, and to make Ontario into a brewing centre of excellence.
It is a community that inspires and embodies this year’s theme of “Essentially Craft.” I hope this year’s conference will provide opportunities to build new partnerships, strengthen existing ones and further solidify the amazing community that defines Ontario’s craft beer industry.
The 2022 Conference truly has something for everyone! We have an amazing line-up of keynote speakers, over 60 technical, environmental, market ing and sales education presentations. You can also expect live demos, lots of craft beer to sample from around the province, networking events and brewery tours. With a 54,000 sq. ft Suppliers’ Marketplace and over 125 exhibitors on-site, get ready to con nect with other industry colleagues and conduct business all in the span of only two days.
Thank you again for attending and making the 2022 OCB Conference the biggest and best one yet.
Cheers! Scott Simmons President, Ontario Craft BrewersOCBC22
“ESSENTIALLY CRAFT”
We are so glad you joined us for OCBC22, “Essentially Craft” confer ence in Niagara Falls!
OCBC is Canada’s ultimate networking and edu cation event, attracting craft brewers and industry suppliers from across North America. Brewery principals, staff and suppliers will meet, connect, network, learn and conduct more business in two+ days than could be possible in several months.
Our tight knit community of breweries, industry suppliers and friends didn’t need a pandemic to tell us that “beer is essential.” We knew it from the mo ment we chose to enter this business (or hobby or pastime or passion, whatever brewing is to you!).
“The most essential and rewarding part of the craft beer industry is its sense of community,” says Scott Simmons, President, Ontario Craft Brewers. “Ontario craft brewers work together to build a local industry that produces premium quality products, drives employment, and creates community. Which is the same reason OCB hosts this annual gathering.”
The global pandemic and economic challenges have had a major impact on craft brewing retail and tourism. Breweries are working in collaboration with their local communities, business organization, government, and industry colleagues to recover from the disruption.
OCBC22 is the first opportunity for the industry to connect broadly, face-to-face and the ideal envi ronment to facilitate collaboration and revitalization of the industry. The event gives attendees an op portunity to connect, share information and network with industry members, suppliers, and stakeholders.
Tyson Sullivan, Retail Sales Manager, Left Field Brewery, and member of the OCBC Planning Committee says, “Our brewery receives invaluable benefits from its annual membership in OCB. Gov ernment advocacy, issues management, technical support, and access to retail data are just a few of the reasons for our membership. OCBC provides us yet another important forum for our industry to connect, do business, share learnings, and try each other’s beer, all in two days.”
Troy Burtch, Senior Manager, Sales & Business Development, Great Lakes Brewery, and long-time member of the OCBC Planning Committee says, “We look forward to this annual opportunity to connect, bringing a big team and spreading out through the conference to check out the latest trends, equip ment, services, and of course, have a beer or three with friends. And, as our industry grows and builds its profile in the national and international brewing sphere, this event only gets better.”
WHAT’S NEW AND AWESOME AT OCBC22?
OCBC is thrilled to be making a big splash in Niagara Falls during its 10th annual conference!
BIGGER VENUE:
Niagara Falls Convention Centre in Niagara Falls, Ontario is one of the province’s largest and most popular meeting and convention facilities. Just steps from North America’s most famous waterfall, with 300,000 square feet of convention space, a central location in the Fallsview Entertainment District, driving distance from major Canadian and U.S. cities and airports, walking distance to hotels and easy access to wine AND BEER country, it has many positive benefits. It’s also an opportunity for registered guests to bring their families for some fun too.
BETTER TRADE SHOW:
The OCBC Suppliers Marketplace has grown into a marketing powerhouse – with suppliers from around the globe offering special deals, large-scale equipment displays such as tanks and packaging lines, contests and giveaways, and, most importantly, re-connection. In the new exhibit hall, you’ll find 125+ suppliers displaying their amazing products and incredible offerings in 10’x10’, 10’x20’ and 20’x20’ booths. This year’s new TNG Demo Stage will feature suppliers and entertainment, bringing you the latest and greatest in the craft beer industry.
BEST BEER EVER:
Interspersed amongst the maze of booths you’ll find the famous OCB beer bars, stocked with fresh, cold OCB craft beer. Attendees will also be able to sample tasty offerings from several of OCBC’s exhibitors. Check your Whova app to stay on top of sampling locations.
LOADS OF LEARNING:
There’s always lots to learn and see at OCBC but this year’s range of breakout sessions is off the charts. Kicking off with awesome national
and international keynote guests, Adam Brož (Day 1) and Andrew Oland (Day 2), there are over 60 presentations, workshops, and demos. More than enough content for every member of the brewery staff, at any level.
CZECH IT OUT!
OCB is thrilled to welcome a big delegation from the Czech Republic, led by our keynote attraction, Adam Brož, Czechvar and including various consul ate staff and suppliers related to brewing, hops, equipment and more. Be sure to stop by their booth to taste some Czech product and say “Ahoj!“
BREWERY TOURS & HOSPITALITY:
When in Niagara, be sure to visit as many Niagara-area breweries, brewpubs and restaurants as possible. This is an epicentre of Ontario tourism, terroir, and hospitality. And if wine is your jam, make it local. Some of Canada’s top award-winning winer ies reside in the area.
INDUSTRY SOCIALS:
OCBC is business in the front, party in the back! Blackburn Brewhouse is hosting the Day 1 (Oct. 25) gathering at its beautiful brewery on Blackburn Pkwy and thanks to Criveller for sponsoring. Also, the official on-site closing party is a spotlight on women brewers brought to you by the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies. Delicious cask beer created by the women of OCB breweries.

ONTARIO CRAFT BREWERS UPDATE
It is a critical time in Ontario’s craft beer industry as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ontario Craft Brewers (OCB) has worked hard as the voice of Ontario’s craft beer sector to advocate for members and continue to sign up new ones over the last year. The OCB now represents over 120 independent, locally owned brewers located in over 110 communities throughout Ontario.
Breweries have always been an integral part of their local communities and the beer produced has reflected the pride, passion and personality of the brewer and the community. Ontario’s craft brewers pride themselves on being part of these communities, providing jobs in cities and towns throughout the province. With their finely crafted brews, they bring awareness to the historical aspects of a region, its people, and the unique elements that reinforce local pride in their communities.
The OCB was founded in 2003 to both honour that history and forge its future. We chose “Ontario Craft Brewers” as our name because it speaks to the tradition of care and craftsmanship that our members insist upon when brewing their beer. Craft beer is who we are. It is the reason we are here. Supporting the bold entrepreneurs who contribute so significantly to our economy is our purpose. We strive to share knowledge, collaborate on strategy, and ultimately create opportunities for our members. It is an exciting time, and to lead the craft beer industry in the years of growth ahead, we will be stronger and more effective united as one.
Craft beer drinkers have supported this commitment. Since 2003, we have continued to grow and now employ well over 4,600 people (FTEs) in Ontario, accounting for 80 per cent of the direct brewing industry jobs in the province, while also accounting for over 9,000 indirect brewing-related jobs. Since 2005, the craft brewing industry has invested well over $250 million in capital into the Ontario economy and driven $200 million in annual tourism to the province, as part of a total annual economic impact of $2 billion.
While the overall beer market has remained flat and even retracted somewhat during the pandemic, craft beer has held its own. Craft beer volume now represents almost 900,000HL of volume in the province, or over 10 million cases, which is over 11% of the total industry. This has happened in an environment where the current retail model has limited people’s ability to find, try and experience the outstanding local craft beer brewed right here at home. Ontario craft beer share remains strong at the LCBO, and in the grocery channel. It shows what can happen when consumers are given a proper shopping environment.
The OCB is always working to create strategies to open new markets and create new opportunities for our members. Over the past three years, the OCB has successfully advocated with government to freeze the basic beer tax rate, allow the sale of craft beer in farmers’ markets, help breweries expand their patios without fees, or waiting time, and allow breweries to serve and sell anywhere on their property, among many other victories for members. We will also be working closely with provincial government on the impending MFA regulation decisions over the coming months and years to help ensure policy and regulatory changes both expand choice and convenience and make it easier to find more local craft beer on more local shelves – which would be great news for consumers, brewers, and taxpayers.
This is only possible with a strong membership from breweries of every size who call all parts of the province home. It is critical we have those voices informing, and shaping our government advocacy, highlighting emerging issues, and letting us know what we can do to help them succeed. We strive every day to serve the membership and provide benefit to their business. We hope you will consider joining and that existing members will encourage their other local breweries to join as well. There is truly strength in numbers. Here are the top ten reasons to join today!

DON’T EVER RUN OUT OF KEGS
Operating a craft brewery can be tough. There are unexpected di culties that crop up at every turn. Whether your brewery started too small and needs to expand, you have ingredient costs that have increased dramatically over the last year, or you’ve found yourself storing pallets of kegs in your brewery as you re-establish yourself with licensees, headaches abound.
With Kegshare, you can solve at least one of your problems.
Kegshare’s fleet allows you the flexibility to switch between sizes of kegs in order to pivot in real time to the demands of the market. Maybe you need 50-litre kegs to keep your Vienna Lager on tap at a chain restaurant. Maybe you need 20-litre kegs for the Imperial Mango Guava Sour your brewer insisted on. Kegshare’s token system allows you to change your approach to the market in short order.
That stack of kegs with broken o-rings and unseated spears in that dusty corner of the
brewery? A thing of the past. Kegshare membership comes with the guarantee that all of their kegs are maintained and repaired before they come through your door, saving you space and e ort.
Do you wake up in the middle of the night wondering where your kegs are? Kegshare’s barcoded inventory system means that your keg is tracked on the way out and on the way back. When the keg is empty, it won’t just sit in some pub’s basement indefinitely. Kegshare will pick up your kegs from the licensee and return them to the warehouse, allowing the cycle to begin anew.
Partnered with existing companies like Cold Haus and TNG in Ontario, and with their equivalent businesses in the rest of Canada, Kegshare is establishing a national network of distribution that helps you get your beer into the hands of happy, slightly inebriated Canadians. Send a keg to B.C., and it will be returned there, allowing you to get a replacement from your local warehouse.
For more information contact: Courtney Fromm, National Manager at courtney.fromm@kegshare.ca or visit kegshare.ca
