EDITOR'S NOTES

Our Greatest Potential Few global events are as inspiring as the

Olympics. The human race seems to unify, ironically, around competition and the

challenging of human capability. Even once

(and sometimes still) marginalized populations,

such as individuals from developing and war-torn countries, women, and teens, have come to claim glory through athletic achievement,

and the symbolism is not lost on us: nothing, it seems, is impossible. The lives of Olympic hopefuls and Olympic heroes off the field, ice,

snow and track often demonstrate this just as starkly as their physical accomplishments. Amid the sexy headlines of athletes’ doping,

sexual harassment, and personal demons, lie lesser lauded triumphs

THE NEW DOMESTICITY

the

NEW DOMESTICITY

1

By Julianna Lawson

It was a day that seemed to belong to another era.

I walked the neighborhood wetlands loop as I often do, but this day I viewed it as though it was 1950. Back then the land was mostly covered by a lake; but the moss-covered, decaying fence posts suggest that it was also farm land. The numerous apple, cherry, and hazelnut trees still bordering the loop speak wistfully of an orchard that once was. Later that day, a bright blue, cloud-embellished sky formed a picturesque backdrop for the laundry hanging on the line. An early spring breeze danced mischievously among the linens. The weather was warm enough to invite nature to slowly dry the sheets, yet brisk enough for the same blue backdrop to showcase a lazy trail of smoke issuing from the farmhouse chimney. Although I was simply driving by the home, I felt in that moment as though I had again been swept back in time. All was slow: the sky seemed bluer, the clouds whiter, the sun-kissed sheets cleaner, the wood stove-heated home warmer. I had been on the property before. Often as a child, we visited the farm to gather a delicious harvest of Italian prunes, peaches and hazelnuts. This naturally adds a nostalgia of its own. But an even sweeter association was formed when I visited with the owner just a few years ago. I had come hoping to again find fruit, but the land had since been devoted mostly to hazelnut trees. So she eagerly shared with me of the farm’s German roots (literally), of the similar soils that welcome hazelnut trees to

flourish in both lands, and of the marriage between a soldier and his bride that gave birth to a beloved neighborhood farm. Indeed, many of the older homes in Clark County might tell similar stories. Clothes lines still stand like sentinels in many sprawling backyards (certainly they were “sprawling” to the children who lived there once upon a time), and if the gnarled fruit and nut trees could talk, they would tell of the many homes blessed by their bounty. Garden boxes, too, seem eager to relive their glory days when the soil was tilled and tended until fresh shoots sprang from the earth to provide for the family gathered around the table. I can attest to the sweetness of the bounty that passed from farm to family in my Vancouver childhood. Figs, plums, apples, cherries, pears, walnuts and hazelnuts fell benevolently from neighbors’ trees, while the many family gardens overflowed with zucchini (always zucchini), tomatoes (I can just smell them warming in the sun now) and the most succulent berries a child could hope to snack on: blueberries and raspberries and strawberries, oh, my! Thankfully, we live in a time when families seem to crave just that: time. One delicious way to reclaim time, to even reclaim a bit of our history, just might be to turn back to the land. Allison Gaspar of Vancouver shares, “We love the satisfaction of placing produce on the table that we planted, nurtured, and harvested ourselves. There is something incredibly satisfying about roasting vegetables or making a salad using mostly produce from your own garden, or picking a large bowl of perfectly ripe blueberries for breakfast right from your own backyard!” Likewise, Kristalee Sorensen, also of Vancouver, delights in sharing her love of gardening with her young family. “I love being outside in nature, getting fresh air. I love preparing the ground, mapping out where I want continued on next page

my vegetables and rotating from the year before . . . . It’s exciting to see the fruit of your labor.” Sorensen admits that “it can be a lot of work, but well worth it.” And the proof is in the pudding (and the salads and the pies and the soups): when the produce is perfectly ripe, going out to pick “your beautiful, fresh berries, fruit, veggies and herbs is an amazing feeling.” Sorensen especially loves having her daughters join her in the garden, from the first tucking of seeds in the soft earth to the final plucking of ripened fruit. “They learn with me and love being a part of it.” If you find your family to be in a time or place where gardening isn’t feasible, consider supporting local farms as the year unfolds and produce begins to fill our land. Invite your children to take part in the process, whether it’s in picking berries from the vine, selecting a carton of eggs from the farmer’s market, or even in offering to help tend a neighbor’s garden. Not only will you likely get some zucchini in return, but your children will gain greater knowledge of the benefits of slow food and the honor and privilege it is to wisely steward our generous land.

Julianna Lawson and her husband Jamie make their home in Vancouver with their four children, ages 12 to 20. Among Julianna’s favorite early childhood memories are those which centered around her family home in Minnehaha. She loved to play with her siblings among the hazelnut, apple, and plum trees, gathering catkins and blossoms in the spring, and then -- oh, joy! -- their fruits in the summer and fall.

Bit of HiStory

Gretchen Fraser

T

Vancouver wife,mom and Winter Olympian

By Pat Jollota

name for herself as a skier in an era when few women entered competitive sports. As a result of her friendship with Lang, she was twice a stand-in for actress Sonja Henie (also an Olympic athlete in figure skating), skiing for Henie in the films “Thin Ice” in 1937, and “Sun Valley Serenade” in 1941.

In 1948, we tuned our radios to listen for news of our neighbor, Gretchen Fraser, who was competing at the Winter Olympics in Switzerland. But there was more to Gretchen Fraser than her incredible victory. She was born Gretchen Kunigk in Tacoma in 1919. Her mother was an avid skier, who was instrumental in opening public skiing on Mt. Rainier. Gretchen was on the ski slopes as soon as she could stand. At age 16 she became a student of the famous Otto Lang, a film producer later known for “Call Northside 777” starring James Stewart, and “5 Fingers,” among other films. Before his filmmaking career, he operated a ski school and quickly recognized that he had a potential star in Gretchen. Alpine skiing was made an Olympic sport in 1936, and by that time, Gretchen was ready to compete. She made a

Averill Harriman, later Ambassador to Russia and aide to Harry Truman, operated a resort in Sun Valley, Idaho, and invited Gretchen to participate in an international race for the Harriman Cup in 1938. On the train to Sun Valley, Idaho she met the captain of the 1936 men’s team, and Vancouver native, Donald Fraser. Harriman announced their engagement before Fraser even had time to propose, but Harriman’s tattling soon became reality: Donald and Gretchen were married in 1939 and settled in Vancouver. The following year, Gretchen made the 1940 Olympic team, but her dream was thwarted when the Games were suspended during World War II. Gretchen returned to Vancouver while her husband served in the Navy. She worked as an accountant for George Goodrich, who owned The Totem Pole, The Inn at the Quay, The Crossing, and other Vancouver area restaurants. But her heart’s interest was working with wounded GIs, teaching swimming and skiing as rehabilitation and treatment. Her work was successful, and in this effort, Gretchen blazed a trail for the birth of the Special Olympics. When the war was over, her husband urged her to return to competitive skiing, and helped in her training. She was named to the 1948 Team USA and set off for Switzerland.

The Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea are now a part of world history. Many in Clark County have forgotten a time in our history when we cheered on one of our very own Vancouverites who skied in the winter Olympics and whose life aside from competing was perhaps even more impressive.

In the slalom, she was the first of 31 competitors to make the run. Her time of 59.7 seconds earned her the nickname of “the flying housewife from Vancouver.” Then, preparing for the second run, the telephone connection between the top and bottom of the run was broken. While it was being repaired, Gretchen waited in the starting gate. She waited 18 minutes. Imagine the tension; for 18 minutes, ready to go at any instant, your team and your country watching, listening and waiting. Her old friend Harriman had interrupted a presidential cabinet meeting to listen to a radio broadcast of the event. The other cabinet members waited the whole 18 minutes along with him. At last the signal came, and she pushed forward, zigzagging crisply down the hill in 57.5 seconds—earning her the gold medal, the first ever in that event by any American, male or female. She also won a silver medal in the combined event during the same Olympic Games. Almost immediately after her stellar performance at the Olympic games, Gretchen announced that she was quitting competitive skiing in favor of family responsibilities, but her athletic victories continued on next page Vancouver Family Magazine • www.vancouverfamilymagazine.com • April 2018

still resulted in endorsement deals with Wheaties cereal and the Wheat Flour Institute, even as she gave birth to a son just 11 months after her Olympic victory. She avoided the limelight after those endorsement deals ran their course, although she continued to work with veterans and other athletes with disabilities. Gretchen Fraser was Vancouver’s heroine. But after 30 years in Vancouver, she and Don moved to Sun Valley, Idaho, where she would live out the rest of her life, mentoring young Olympic hopefuls and teaching the disabled the joy of skiing. She traveled the country promoting skiing and the resort at Sun Valley. Many of her young mentorees went on to greater things. In 1994, in Lillehammer, Norway, one of those young protégés, Picabo Street, won the Olympic silver medal in downhill skiing. During those same Olympic Games, and one month after husband passed away, Gretchen joined him, ending a life that was, according to the president of the US Skiing Association, “the Olympic ideal.” Honoring Vancouver’s Olympic heroine and champion for disabled veterans, Gretchen Fraser Park lies off Mill Plain near 155th Ave., next to Vancouver Police East Precinct.

Pat Jollota retired from the Los Angeles Police Department and came to Vancouver to find a new career in historic preservation. She was curator of education at the Clark County Historical Museum for 22 years, while almost concurrently serving for 20 years on the Vancouver City Council. TIP-TOEING

Through TULIPS . . . And LILACS By Afton Nelson

In April, Woodland, Washington

transforms into “Flowerland” thanks to two events that bring in visitors from around the world: Woodland Tulip Festival at Holland America Flower Gardens and Lilac Days at the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens. What better way to welcome the change of seasons than with a colorful, fragrant floral assault? And, since the tulip fields and lilac gardens are just a three-minute drive from each other, it’s easy to visit both spots on the same day. Both gardens also make a fun family outing, as well as a gorgeous setting for spring photos. During Woodland Tulip Festival, Holland America Flower Gardens has several acres of blooming tulips with both a gorgeous U-pick field and a display field where you can see the many varieties in bloom just to enjoy, or to order for your own garden. The gift shop is filled with seasonal bulbs, cut flowers and floral arrangements as well as lots of local treats like coffee and tea, fudge, soaps and candles. My teenage boys were very interested in the fudge samples, so much so that I decided to bring a couple bars home. They also enjoyed the U-pick field, where scissors were provided for easy cutting and we paid by the stem. Keep an eye on your little ones or their pickings will add up

answer questions on both history and horticulture.

Nothing makes a more iconic spring photo than a backdrop of vibrant tulips and Holland America Flower Garden sweetens the experience with an annual baby photo contest. Snap a photo of your baby (under 2 years old) in the tulip fields and submit it to the Cutest Baby Contest. Older kids (and even grown-ups) might insist on a photo wearing the giant wooden shoes located in the vendor area.

The house was a big draw for my boys, but the grounds were equally fun to roam. I turned the camera over to my son who had fun snapping pictures of the giant water tower, the gazebo, and a few close ups of honeybees.

Once you’ve had your fill of tulips, head down the street to the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens. The star of Lilac Days is, of course, the stunning collection of colorful lilacs in full bloom. You’ll find lilacs in colors you didn’t even know existed, including several hybridized by Hulda Klager herself, who lived on the acreage until her death in 1960. The scent is intoxicating. Like the tulip festival, Lilac Days also includes musical performances, a gift shop and flower sales. In addition, Hulda Klager’s Victorian-era home is open for tours. Walking through the restored and well furnished home is like stepping back in time. Knowledgeable volunteers are on hand to

Movies with a Cause: Empowering Citizens While Building Community By Brooke Strickland

TECHNOLOGY TODAY gives people the ability to voice their opinions on virtually any media platform out there, whether it’s sharing a video interview on Facebook, posting a link on Twitter, or creating your own YouTube channel. And many people would argue that despite this ubiquity, much of the digital content available today lacks meaning or depth. But in-depth and cause-driven media is available for those seeking it, and that’s where Meaningful Movies Project comes in, to connect citizens to causes they care about. This non-profit organization gives neighborhoods, groups, and individuals the opportunity to organize, educate, and advocate around various topics through the power of social justice documentary film and conversation. The goal is to cultivate community and build positive, meaningful interactions that support, encourage, and empower people to advocate for wellrounded public discussion. The organization recently celebrated its 15th anniversary, having been founded

in February 2003 in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle as a project of the Wallingford Neighbors for Peace and Justice. Diane Turner, representative for Meaningful Movies Project shares, “An initial film series called ‘Friday Night at the Meaningful Movies’ was organized by Ellie Rose to help educate the community about important issues in our lives. The films attracted large audiences, as neighbors clamored to learn together and share thoughts and information in a community discussion. When the film series ended, several in the group decided to continue the film and discussion events, due to the high interest by participants. Films were screened weekly in the downstairs room of a Wallingford church, where they continue today.” The original group consisted of 6 people, and Rick Turner assumed leadership. Under his guidance, in 2012, the group was established as a non-profit and venues were being set up around the Puget Sound area. Today, there are 20 venues that are run by almost 100 volunteers. There is one venue in Ogden, Utah, 17 venues in Western Washington,

and two venues in Clark County. The Clark County venues are in Vancouver and Ridgefield and attendance at the events range from 20 to 100 people. HOW IT WORKS: Meaningful Movies Project offers free film screenings and events around the Pacific Northwest that feature topical documentary films. Many of these events are accompanied by speakers, organization representatives, or filmmakers. “We believe everyone needs to become more aware of and critically analyze local, domestic and international social justice issues, so that we, as citizens, can help build a more peaceful and just world,” says Turner. “We believe we can make positive, meaningful change in the world by connecting people, one person to one person at a time. In so doing, we discover that we are far more similar in our core beliefs than we are continued on next page

So far, the group has shown 21 films with topics that range from climate change, money in politics, homelessness, and much more. The Ridgefield group began last July and has followed some of the same models of the Vancouver group. They recently showed their seventh film. The films presented at the events often tackle difficult subjects and sometimes address life-altering issues.
