n April 8th, Steph Hall took out an ad in our sister publication, the Squamish Chief newspaper, which read:

"The correct spacing interval after sentences is two spaces. Disagree? Take out your own ad.

Note: in order to win this debate, you must take out a larger ad than mine. Signed, a Sea-to-Sky grammarian"

I wasn't willing to let this false statement go unchallenged, so naturally I paid a few hundred bucks to take out a larger ad to refute it.

The following week, Steph returned fire with an ad that was larger than my previous one. She took out a half page.

Wanting to put an end to this silliness, I dug deep (into my line of credit) the next week and purchased a full page. I thought that would be the end of it.

The City is offering up a venue for “micro-weddings” this summer Have you been forced to re-think your wedding plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent limit on mass gatherings? If you’re still wanting to tie the knot this summer - albeit without the lengthy guest list - the City of Vancouver is offering up a solution. The City announced it's making an outdoor venue adjacent to City Hall available for “micro-weddings” of up to 10 people total, at a cost of $85, not including tax, per ceremony.

Five people, including the couple, officiant, and witnesses, are required to hold a ceremony, meaning a total of five additional guests may be allowed to attend each one.

Space bookings for the Helena Gutteridge Plaza are currently open online. The first ceremony date is scheduled for June 19, with eight, half-hour time slots from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. available for each Friday until Sept. 4.

Monday, July 27 has also been reserved for

LGBTQ2+ weddings, as a special event kicking off PRIDE Week in Vancouver.

While the city may be providing the venue, each couple will need to make their own arrangements for an officiant, photographer and marriage licence before they can walk down the aisle. (Marriage licences are not available for purchase through the City.)

Couples will also need to ensure any decorations they bring are zero waste, and don’t need to be affixed in any way - nothing that must be taped, tacked or nailed is allowed, nor is “throwing of any litter outside City Hall.” (Yes, that includes confetti and rice.)

However, decor at each ceremony will include physical distancing decals placed on the ground, “to ensure the couple, officiant, witnesses, and guests are standing at a safe and comfortable distance from one another,” the City explained.

The initiative comes following the City’s original plans to launch a pilot project for civil weddings at City Hall for this spring and summer, with options for couples to hold a ceremony in Council Chambers or outdoors, on the plaza. The City intended to use the original pilot as a way to gauge interest for civil ceremonies held at City Hall.

'Patio Dance Party' every night If you thought your community did it up proper for the 7 o'clock cheer, it might be hard to beat Mount Pleasant's nightly "Patio Dance Party."

Launched in early April, Patio Dance Party - and its companion Instagram account, the aptly named @patiodanceparty - extends the nightly tradition of making some noise at 7 p.m. in support of essential workers during the COVID-19 crisis.

On a patio above 7th and Main Street, the dance party is officiated by a DJ who accepts requests - via Instagram Direct Message, that is. It is the era of social distancing, after all!

The dance parties have been bringing the neighbours together, from a safe distance, who are on the sidewalks and their own patios dancing when the party kicks off at 7:02 p.m. nightly, rain or shine.

One of the neighbours is photographer Nura Sheidaee, who says the Patio

Dance Party crew have "brought the energy, the love, and the endless array of fabulous outfits."

"They have made the nights less lonely," attests the Aussie expat. "They have truly connected the neighbourhood, and have helped me pick up my camera again and focus on all the positivity that I am so grateful to have happening right outside my balcony."

Sheidaee has been taking photographs of the Patio Dance Party, which she shared with us.

Legendary chef trims his restaurant empire in wake of COVID-19

I

t's the bittersweet end to a long and storied tenure for restaurateurs and chefs Vikram Vij and Meeru Dhalwala. This week Vij's restaurants announced the permanent closure of their South Granville location, currently home to Rangoli, as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

In March, as the pandemic began to take its toll on Vancouver businesses, Rangoli was initially offering delivery and pick-up at their location at 1480 West 11th Ave. However, operations were soon consolidated out of Vij's Cambie Village flagship location, and will remain as such from now on.

"We’re focused on having one strong, committed team in one location, serving both menus," said Vij and Dhalwala in a statement issued May 6.

Vij's has been in South Granville for a quarter century.

Opened in 1994, the neighbourhood was the original home of the celebrated chef's namesake restaurant, which began on West Broadway before shifting to the West 11th spot in 1996. In late 2015, Vij's officially re-located to the eye-catching building with the lovely rooftop patio on Cambie Street.

In closing the 11th Ave restaurant, Vij and Dhalwala have been reminiscing, especially when it came to their now-rescinded 'no reservations' policy and famous faces, as well as their own personal relationships. "[W]e could tell and write so many stories of the joys and adventures we’ve had. For the longest time, Vikram hardly recognized western celebrities and often didn’t know who he was telling 'first come, first served' to. Many of our staff met their lifelong partners while working at Vij’s. We even have a video taken by a South Granville resident of Vikram and Mike (our GM) chasing down a man who came into our crowded lounge and stole a customer's handbag. Our landmark memory from South Granville was when Robin Williams dropped in unexpectedly for dinner, and during his 1.5 hour wait, performed an hilarious impromptu show for those waiting with him. At some point, maybe 20 years ago, Vij’s lounge became our community cocktail party venue. Both our daughters were born in the midst of big renovations at our beloved South Granville location."

Right now the plan is to continue to offer dinnertime take-out and delivery service from Vij's on Cambie.

Eventually they will resume lunch and dinner service, and will continue to offer take-out and delivery.

"We need community more than ever and our Vij’s/ Rangoli family will be so happy to welcome back our community and be in a position to do so with a strong backbone," add Vij and Dhalwala.

From there, managers can create shifts – colliers will likely bring different groups of workers back into the office on separate days to ensure adequate space, for example – to ensure safety. kloot said colliers is recommending that clients be as flexible as possible. t hat means possibly using meeting rooms as work spaces to ensure people are not crammed into cubicles, as well as designating doors as entrances or exits only and marking one-way passages to prevent collisions.

Jensen added that the flexibility is also needed in case the pandemic lifts, which would allow managers to shrink the space needed for social distancing to bring employees closer together.

ebruary marked the opening of FPs Food Process solutions corp.’s newest manufacturing facility in richmond. it added another 80,000 square feet of factory space for the canadian producer of freezing and cooling equipment. march, meanwhile, gave way to the coviD-19 pandemic in b.c., quickly transforming much of the operations on the floor of FPs’ local facilities.

“We are lucky that we got a fourth facility in richmond so we were able to spread out our manufacturing team a little further,” said Justin Lai, the company’s vice-president of sales and marketing.

Workers on the floor are abiding by social distancing, lunches are split up to reduce the number of people in the break room and sanitization teams are cleaning up the lunch area between those breaks. overtime hours have also been reduced in anticipation of potential slowdowns in the coming months. but FPs has not laid off any workers during the pandemic; it has instead hired some additional staff. “the food industry is fairly resilient in that people need to eat,” Lai said. but not all manufacturers have been as fortunate, according to andrew Wynn-Williams, the canadian manufacturers & Exporters’ (cmE) vice-president for b.c.

he said some companies have been able to push through during the pandemic, with orders coming through as they always would or else pivoting their manufacturing capacity to a market in need. o t h e r m a n u f a c t u re r s a re “treading water,” while a third group is in trouble, Wynn-Williams added. “but i would say the smallest group is the group that’s in real trouble,” he said. as the economy begins to ramp up and more return to work, Wynn-Williams said workers can expect more staggered shifts to ensure social distancing as well as requirements to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

Wynn-Williams said additional investments will need to be made in new machinery to compete with

other nations that are also ramping up operations as restrictions loosen. that might mean more robotics used on the floor of factories to boost productivity, while workers’ duties are in turn redistributed. at vancouver-based seaspan shipyards, the shipbuilder has significantly reduced the number of employees working within the cramped confines of submarines, while crews have been spread out across ships to ensure social distancing.

Employees have also been instructed not to gather at gates for entry and exit, while those who need to work near each other are required to don appropriate PPE. and for workers who remain uncomfortable coming to the job site following the new safety

measures, they’ve been told they can stay at home without job repercussions, according to seaspan cEo mark Lamarre.

Factory workers should be prepared for employers to deploy contact tracing in a bid to mitigate any potential workplace outbreaks, according to Walter Pela, kPmg’s b.c. regional managing partner. t hat mea ns hav i ng people maintain logs of who they interact with daily so that if there is a case of coviD-19 on the floor, factories can quickly trace it. “in some jurisdictions you’re seeing very good use of digital technologies to deal with that,” Pela said, “but even absent those, a manual log of people being more attuned to who they’re coming into contact with [would work].” •

hile British Columbians are no doubt excited to begin expanding their social circles come mid-May, Dr. Bonnie Henry says it’s important to start slow and continue to be cautious. Last week, Premier John Horgan announced the province would be taking its first steps to ease off some COVID-19 restrictions, beginning after the Victoria Day long weekend. The plan includes reopening a variety of businesses, under new guidelines to reduce the risk of spreading the virus, along with allowing people to spend more time with others.

While no orders had been made to stop people from socializing — outside of restricting events and gatherings larger than 50 people — Provincial Health Officer Dr. Henry has consistently urged people to stay home and stick to hanging out with those in the same household.

That messaging is changing come mid-May. “Expand your circle, in New Zealand they've been talking about 'double your bubble,'” Dr. Henry said during Thursday's daily press conference.

“Don't make it two people one night, and four people who are different the next night. What we want to do is make sure that we increase our social connections with the people who are close to us, but that we are very mindful that if we have connections, we are then connected with their connections, and that increases our risk.”

Additionally, those who spend their time with elderly people, or with those who are immunocompromised, should think twice about getting too social.

“If I am somebody who has an elder who's living with me, then I want to be more cautious about what I'm doing or if I'm going back to work and my children are going to daycare, or they're going to spend time with their grandparents, then maybe we don't have them have playdates with other children right now,” Dr. Henry said. “We still need to be cautious, this is not going back to where we were in December where we had multiple mixing and congregating. We still want to keep close.”

While B.C. has done well in “flattening the curve” and reducing transmissions over the past two

months, allowing for the phased-in reduction in restrictions, the risk of a spike in transmissions remains until a vaccine is developed. A “second wave” of cases in the fall is of particular concern.

“Maybe there won't be a second wave, but every other pandemic in recorded history has had at least two waves, some more,” Dr. Henry said.

“Whether the second wave will be more severe than the first, whether there'll be a series of smaller waves, I don't know. I don't think anybody knows... What I do know is we need to keep putting the pressure on this virus to make sure it doesn't take off and that means we can't expand our circles too much in the coming weeks and months.”

But for those needing some more social interaction in their lives, some reprieve is coming in the next couple of weeks.

“Hug your grandparents if they're 'your people,' hug your friends if you haven't seen them, the friends that you've chosen to be each other's bubble, and of course, hug your family, your household, every day,” Dr. Henry said.

Gervais chose Esther the Wonder Pig, a social media darling with over half a million Instagram followers and a Hollywood movie deal, who hails from across the country.

Last week, P49 revealed the fundraiser has wrapped up and Esther and the eponymous sanctuary she calls home is the beneficiary of $8,000.

"Thank you for stepping up Ricky and to all of you P49 and Esther fans for raising funds for the sanctuary to continue its mission of compassion for animals during these tough times," said Parallel 49.

Esther has two human 'dads' - Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter - who thought they'd adopted something called a 'teacup' pig - which didn't actually exist. Their new little Esther was going to grow up to be a big, commercialsized pig.

VPD Chief Adam Palmer tweeted about a rather strange discovery on May 8, after police responded to a call of a man with a machete involved in a fight in the park.

Palmer writes that officers discovered four replica guns, two machetes, and an axe with nails in it.

In addition, they found an eight-foot-long boa constrictor.

“Every call in policing is different, and this is a call responding officers will never forget,” says Constable Tania Visintin, VPD. “It was shocking for officers to find the snake, but the number of weapons they discovered is also very concerning.”

Police arrived in the park at around 12:30 p.m. The suspects in the fight had dispersed. Officers were directed to a tent by witnesses, where they initially found the snake and some weapons in plain view.

As the investigation progressed, officers found additional weapons, including a loaded shotgun, a crossbow, machetes and more.

Animal Services responded to seize the snake.

One suspect is in custody in relation to the police call about the fight. The investigation is ongoing.

ARMY & NAVY IS CLOSING PERMANENTLY

he five Army & Navy stores that owner Jacqui Cohen temporarily closed on March 18 will never reopen, she announced last week.

"After an incredible 101 years, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close Army & Navy," she told Glacier Media on May 9 in an emailed statement. "In March, we were forced to shutter all five of our stores and temporarily layoff our staff. We had hoped to re-open but the economic challenges of COVID-19 have proven insurmountable."

She expressed gratitude toward her staff for their years of service, her suppliers and her customers.

"It is hard to comprehend," she said. "This time last year we were celebrating the centenary of Army & Navy – a company my grandfather started in 1919 – and we were looking forward to the years ahead. Now we are closing a company that was at the heart of eight communities in western Canada over its 101 years."

Cohen noted that the retail sector has changed dramatically during the past century but never faced a challenge like the global pandemic.

The Christian Labour Association of Canada sent Glacier Media a statement saying that it would be working with Cohen to ensure fair severance packages for 83 of its members who worked at the Vancouver and New Westminster locations, and Cohen said that she will spend the immediate future working to ensure that her staff have support.

"I will then be focusing on the philanthropic work of Face the World, an organization I created 30 years ago to support our city’s most vulnerable,

and most importantly, my family, which has recently grown by one."

Cohen told us last year that one of her proudest accomplishments is that she has not sold her family’s real estate holdings.

Among the prized properties is the 13-storey Dominion Building, which was the tallest commercial building in the British Empire when it was completed in 1910. It was assessed in January at more than $42.6 million. Her Point Grey Road mansion was assessed at almost $40 million in 2019 but fell in value to close to $32.6 million in January.

She owns the real estate under all of her Army & Navy stores except for the one in Langley, as well as a patch of undeveloped land in Port Coquitlam and a home near the University of British Columbia, where her mother, Marlene Cohen, lives.

Holdings also include most of the block around the Cordova Street store – properties such as the Hildon Hotel, a parking lot and a head office building.

She told Glacier Media last year that she had thought about redeveloping her Cordova Street properties but decided against it because she did not want the hassle of dealing with the City of Vancouver.

Cohen's grandfather, Sam Cohen opened his first storefront on Hastings Street in Vancouver in 1919, when he was 22 years old. His father had operated the Jacob Cohen and Sons store, which was also on West Hastings Street.

Sam Cohen mostly sold military surplus goods and his philosophy was to buy cheap, sell cheap

and pass on a great deal to the customer. That business plan found success, and he expanded his business to be Canada's first discount department-store chain, with nine stores and a mail-order business throughout Western Canada.

Cohen, who took over her grandfather's business from non-family managers in 1998, reveres her grandfather. A large framed photo of Sam Cohen sat on a side table in her office when Glacier Media interviewed her last year.

Her father, Jack Cohen, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when he was in his late teens.

As a result, his father wanted to protect him by not forcing the management of the business on him, said Cohen, who turned 65 years old last year.

When Sam Cohen died in 1966, he left his fortune to his three grandchildren in trust accounts that were each valued in the eight figures. Cohen was six years old at the time.

She said she did not think that her grandfather had it in mind that she would take over the family business. The plan was that her brother would run the company.

Tragedies, however, struck her siblings. Cohen's brother, Jeffrey Cohen, died of a drug overdose at age 26, in 1978. Her sister, Karen (Kayce) Cohen, then died at the age of 28, after losing control of her Ferrari on the Stanley Park Causeway in 1982.

“Needless to say, when I got to 30 [years old] it was quite a relief,” Cohen told Glacier Media in 2009, when Army & Navy was celebrating its 90th anniversary.
