or more than 12 years we’ve been keeping you connected to Vancouver through our website, social media channels, and now this printed publication. This week I’m thrilled to let you know we’ve released an app for iPhone and Android that brings you everything in one place; your phone.
Developed over the past few months by our team at Glacier Media, our smartphone app is now available as a free download in the App Store and Google Play store. Easy to use, it brings you more than 40 stories per day, authored by journalists who specialize in breaking local (and international) news as well as trending articles, entertainment, food and more. You can simply scroll through the latest news, or filter out the noise by clicking on categories. The app has a number of different functions,
including the option to bookmark stories to read later, send us news tips, and set notifications for subjects you’re passionate about so you’ll never miss a story. Oh, and there’s an up-to-the-minute weather feature, so you’ll always know when to bring an umbrella (or sunscreen). Simply search for “Vancouver Is Awesome” in the app store on your phone, and install it. Again, like all of our news products, it’s free. Stay informed. Download our app. And make sure to wash your hands.

ELUS and V.I.A. are sharing stories about how Metro Vancouverites are staying connected during the COVID-19 lockdown.
This week we're shining a light on Farah Saad, who is leading an online mindfulness circle from Vancouver. “It is beautiful to see the safe space that was created for people joining from around the world. To see someone come to a mindfulness circle from Switzerland and they are feeling the exact same way as someone in Pakistan or Canada. People find it astonishing that someone on the other side of the world is having the same thoughts and feelings as them. They find it nice to connect with people all around the globe and to come together to meditate and learn a few mindfulness tips. We are all going through isolation collectively in the globe, and it is truly humbling. This one common denominator that is uniting everyone. How often do we have that?”

ransLink unveiled “new and enhanced measures” last week aimed at making transit service safer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The measures come with a recommendation that all transit riders wear masks. “Over the next several weeks, customers will notice changes at transit stations and on vehicles designed to improve sanitization, create space where possible, and enhance personal safety,” said a TransLink news release. “TransLink’s initiatives, many of which have been taken since the beginning of the pandemic, are now part of a Safe Operating Action Plan. This plan will be implemented in phases to meet the needs of our customers as B.C.’s economy re-starts.” TransLink has listed the following measures it is taking: Increased Cleaning and Sanitizing • Deploying cleaning “pit crews” to disinfect SkyTrain cars at high traffic stations.
• Increasing bus and SeaBus disinfecting sprays to twice per week in addition to daily cleaning schedules. • Maintaining daily cleaning and disinfecting schedules on SkyTrain and West Coast Express cars, as well as HandyDART vehicles.
• Restoring service across all modes to add more capacity, including to routes which were previously reduced. Service will be operating at nearly the same levels as before the COVID-19 pandemic. • Monitoring passenger loads in order to deploy additional service at times and on routes where physical distancing is more difficult. TransLink has also made several recommendations for transit riders. • Stay off the system if you are sick. • Wear a non-medical mask or face covering while waiting or onboard our vehicles. • Travel outside of peak times when possible. This is especially recommended for vulnerable people. • Allow more time for your commute. “Public Health and WorkSafeBC are working with transit agencies to ensure all reasonable steps are being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19, however, it’s clear that maintaining a safe physical distance may not be possible in every situation,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, British Columbia’s Provincial Health Officer, in a statement. “We recommend all passengers consider wearing a face covering while using public transit, especially during those instances where physical distancing may not be possible. We also ask the public to be patient during this challenging transition period and we are grateful to British Columbia’s transit agencies for doing everything possible to protect the public during these changing times.” By Chris Campbell

RACISM A
nti-Asian racism has spiked since COVID-19 forced B.C. into a state of emergency in March and Vancouver police say that's driven an increase in hate crimes overall.
Howard Chow, the department's deputy chief constable for operations, said investigators have opened 29 files involving anti-Asian racism since March, a "staggering" increase from four files in the same time period last year. "This has been going on since post-COVID. I think some 90 per cent of the incidents we're talking about happened after the pandemic was announced," said Chow, noting other cities across North America have reported a similar trend. There have been 77 hate-associated police files in 2020, said Chow, and another 10 active files from April and May could later be classified as hate crimes. By comparison, 51 hate crimes had been reported by this time last year, he said. Deputy Chief Const. Laurence Rankin said the alleged offences range from racial slurs and vandalism to assault. Suspects have been identified in six of the 29 cases, although no charges have been laid yet, he added.
Ten of the files have concluded due to lack of evidence or suspects, but Rankin said they could be reopened in future. The department has stepped up its engagement with the Chinese community in Vancouver to raise awareness of what constitutes a hate crime and how victims can connect with police, said Chow. Additional officers are patrolling Chinatown and more public safety cameras have been installed, he said. Racist incidents and hate crimes are adding to people's stress and fear during an already uncertain time, said Chow, who identified himself as first generation Chinese Canadian. "Hate is insidious. Right now, it's anti-Asian, but it spreads like a virus and impacts us all," he said, while urging anyone who sees racism to report it to police. Chow also addressed potential offenders, saying half of Vancouver's residents are culturally diverse. "They're not a minority. It's who we are," he said. The racist slurs and assaults have taken place as people were going about daily life in parks, grocery stores and on public transit, said Chris Lee, the director of the Asian Canadian and Asian migration studies program at the University of

British Columbia. "I think everyone who feels like they could potentially be racially profiled at this time is thinking twice about their safety," said Lee, pointing to an alleged assault last week against an Indigenous woman whose attacker uttered antiAsian slurs. Lee said racism is under-reported and the police files represent a fraction of the actual number of racist incidents that occur in Vancouver, but the recent spike helps paint a clearer picture of the widespread nature of racism in the city. "I think for a lot of families (it's) going to mean conversations around, you know, should our parents be out, should our elders be out, especially those who are most vulnerable?" Premier John Horgan has also condemned rising racism in the wake of the pandemic and appealed to citizens to stand up to racist behaviour when they see it. "Hate has no place in British Columbia. We are a strong and vibrant economy and a strong and vibrant community because of the diversity that is what makes up this great province," he said on Wednesday. By Brenna Owen, The Canadian Press

Once baby crows leave the nest, they spend the first few days fluttering from branch to branch within their nest tree as they build up muscles for their first flight. But in cities, the lower tree branches are often removed for safety, meaning baby crows often end up on the ground, stressing out parents.

Will British Columbians be able to wine-tour in the Okanagan this summer?
A
s temperatures rise in the Okanagan, it's still unclear what this year's tourist season will look like under COVID-19 conditions. But Dr. Bonnie Henry is hopeful she'll be encouraging British Columbians to travel around their own province come the summer. During one of her daily press conferences last week, Dr. Henry, B.C.'s provincial health officer, says her recommendations for the summer will depend largely on how the next few weeks look. “If things continue to go well, and we take it carefully and we're mindful of the potential for outbreaks and we get to that point in the summer, then yes, I will be encouraging people to vacation at home in B.C., to experience what we have here and to support our local communities and businesses,” she said Saturday. In the past, she's said she doesn't expect international travellers to be coming to B.C. any time soon. Canada's border with the United States will be closed to non-essential travel until at least June 21, but B.C.'s Health Minister Adrian Dix has said he
expects it will need to stay closed for a significant time beyond that. Dr. Henry, who's held four to five press conferences every week since March, in addition to her daily work managing the COVID-19 crisis in B.C. behind the scenes, added that she's excited to one day take her own vacation within the province. “I'm looking forward to maybe getting a break some day and there's a number of places that I would like to go and spend some time and make sure that we can support our tourist-reliant industries as much as we can,” she said. With Phase 2 of B.C,'s reopening beginning last week, many restaurants and pubs are beginning to reopen under new measures, along with local wineries. Dr. Henry said if wineries are able to abide by the new guidelines to minimize the transmission of the virus, they're welcome to open. “As long as they have their plans posted and they have them in place to make sure that they're meeting the

Feds pursuing talks with provinces ‘without delay’ for 10 paid sick days It’s up to landlords, not tenants, to apply for the program.
Ottawa will be looking to ensure workers can land 10 paid sick days a year, Trudeau said Monday, May 25th, during his daily media briefing outside his home in Ottawa.
Landlords that apply are expected to absorb 25% of the rent due, while Trudeau has previously urged small businesses to tap other federal programs to cover the final 25%.
Further details were sparse on what such a program would entail or how much it would cost.
The assistance covers the months of April, May and June and can be applied retroactively.
Meanwhile, applications for the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance Program opened Monday.

hat started as a way to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope ended within minutes as runners and T-shirts sold out
Adidas Canada had promoted the sale of Orion sneakers similar to the classic, three-stripe runner worn by Fox throughout his marathon journey. The online-only sale began Wednesday morning but comments on the Adidas website show customers ready to spend $130 for the shoes or $40 for the T-shirt instead received notices that inventory was not available. A few minutes after the sale started, Adidas posted an advisory asking customers to "stay tuned for a restock." Adidas Canada says on its site that all net proceeds from the commemorative collection will go to The Terry Fox Foundation and the company didn't respond to a request for comment about its stock shortage. Fox began his run on April 12, 1980 in St. John's, Newfoundland and was forced to end it 143 days later in Northern Ontario after cancer spread to his lungs.
During the run and in the years following, the Marathon of Hope has raised more than $750 million worldwide for cancer research. By The Canadian Press

Support of collaborative research vital to our future Front line health care staff at Vancouver General Hospital prepare to treat patients.
BY ANGELA CHAPMAN PRESIDENT & CEO VGH & UBC HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
In March the world seemingly stopped. Plans were cancelled, some of our favourite places closed, and we all learned how to estimate two metres of distance. But while all this stopping and staying home happened, all across our communities, people were stepping up. Medical experts at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and other health care centres across the province swiftly pivoted their approach, transforming hospitals in order to best treat COVID-19, all while keeping health care teams and their patients safe. At VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, our community has shown an incredible outpouring of support with nearly 2,500 donors contributing more than $2.7 million to COVID-19 related funds. These donations are impacting health care workers on the front lines and funding world-class researchers, who are working tirelessly to uncover the mystery of this disease.
For 40 years, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation has been the philanthropic engine for health innovation in B.C., supporting the most specialized care, groundbreaking research and system transformation across Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). And with donor support, they will continue to be there for our health care partners, as we face an unprecedented challenge. Researching new treatments Now that we have flattened the curve in B.C., we are looking ahead at what is needed in order to return to normal quickly and safely. And the answer to this is accelerating research. This is why the Foundation is proud to be a part of the fight against COVID-19, working alongside our clinician-scientists who are making great strides right here in Vancouver to help patients worldwide. Clinician-scientists like Dr. Myp Sekhon and Cheryl Wellington, PhD, who are leading a dedicated team of researchers in a donor-supported lab in
characterizing changes in the immune system of COVID-19 infected patients.
This bench-to-bedside research is helping patients in our hospitals today. The information gathered at VGH as a part of this and other studies will also be made publicly available in order to inform other research, providing clearer paths to more impactful treatments, and potentially a cure. Research into prevention and treatment is happening all across VCH in collaboration with national and international efforts. This work will be crucial in allowing us to “take back normal”. One day we will be able to travel, to attend live sports and concerts, and to hug all of our loved ones. And donor support of local and international research projects will help us get there.
You have empowered us to continually transform health care and allow our health care heroes to do what they do best – improve and save lives. The hospitals and health care centres which have been
impacted by COVID-19 are now looking at replenishing supplies, supporting staff members in any way they need, and resuming non-urgent care and rescheduling appointments that were previously cancelled.
Your support is vital in this fight.
Health care needs philanthropy to beat COVID-19 B.C.’s health care system is strong, and in no small part because of our community.

VANCOUVER IS AWESOME THURSDAY, MAY 28, 2020
VANCOU VERISAWESOME .COM
When schools across the province weren't able to welcome students back following the March Break holidays due to the COVID-19 crisis, one of the first concerns in communities was access to school lunches.
Working with the Vancouver School Board and a fantastic team of collaborators and supporters (including Italian Cultural Centre and Ono Vancouver), LunchLAB: Chefs for Families is providing more than 5,000 meals to 260 families each week.
In Vancouver, the response from local non-profits and businesses was swift. The LunchLAB: Chefs for Families program was already in place thanks to local orgs Fresh Roots and Growing Chefs!, and had been providing the opportunity for students to learn how to grow and prepare food thanks to experts and industry leaders.
Donations from the public can be made via either Growing Chefs! or Fresh Roots, and that money funds the meals.
LunchLAB was able to pivot their model in response to COVID-19, by connecting Vancouver chefs with donated food to create healthy meals for families in need.

Among those collaborators and supporters are local chefs, cooks, and restaurant staff who have been able to stay on the job thanks to the program. One key player has been the Italian Cultural Centre and their Executive Chef Jackson Noah. When bookings and events at the Centre had to be taken off the calendar, Noah was able to move into a role helping coordinate the meal program, making savvy use of donated food. Local pastry chef Elena Krasnova, owner of Burnaby's popular Mon Paris Pâtisserie, is one of the chefs who has stepped up with her time, talents, and tasty eats to provide a real treat to LunchLAB families. Thanks to a generous donation of 50kg of Ruby Chocolate from Callebaut, Krasnova created treat packages valued at over $3,000. The talented pastry chef made Ruby chocolate bars with pistachios as well as bags of shortbread cookies glazed with Ruby chocolate. The goodies were delivered to 200 families on May 22. “It is extremely important for me to give back to the community at this time,” explains Krasnova. “I partnered with Callebaut to create something sweet and comforting and chose LunchLAB: Chefs for Families because I wanted the treats to go moms and their families.” “Growing Chefs! and Fresh Roots are two charities that have strong ties in the restaurant community,” adds Krasnova. ”Not only are they providing much needed nourishment to hundreds of families in need through LunchLAB, the program is also keeping cooks employed, which is something very close to my heart in these

uncertain times for our industry.” Chef Noah is among the many who can attest to the power of community and collaboration during COVID-19 in Vancouver. "It’s been very reaffirming to see the efforts people are willing to put into this work we’re doing," Noah said recently in a Q&A for Humans of Support. "In times of crisis, the people in a position to help others should be making efforts to help those less fortunate, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing. More and more people are reaching out, either to donate food or donate their time to the project. As tough as things might seem for some people out there, I think now more than ever it’s important to stay positive, and make necessary efforts to help those around you." By Lindsay William-Ross

Alkaline Restart: Reverse the Process of Aging With Stephan Wilmes
Petition launched to keep schools closed until September
A
Vancouver woman has launched a petition calling for the province to keep schools closed until September, and it has been signed by more than 24,000 people.
Patricia Cullen created the online petition, entitled "Keep BC Schools Closed until Sept 2020," to persuade the Ministry of Education not to send children back to school in June. While parents will decide whether or not their children return, Cullen points out that they will only be returning for four weeks. Moreover, she argues that young children simply don't have the capacity to understand safe hygiene practices. "For K-Gr.5, children are allowed to attend on alternating days twice a week. Children this age are too young to carry the social responsibility to effectively sanitize themselves for the health and safety of others, but will be at school two times more often than older children, who are more likely to sanitize effectively and are only likely to attend one day/week," she writes.
Cullen adds that young children may also be less likely to notice early symptoms of COVID-19 and less likely to voice concerns. As for teachers, she says they aren't being compensated for the risk to themselves and to their families. She adds that they've been instructed not to wear face masks because it will frighten children. However, she notes that not wearing masks may increase the risk of transmission. While many parents will likely send their children to school as they head back to work, Cullen says this decision is, "is less a voluntary one and more a forced risk." "This will likely further increase the possibility of asymptomatic children spreading infection, both in schools and at their parent's workplace," she adds. In only a few days, the petition has been signed by a whopping 24,000 people and counting. Find out more information at www.bit.ly/bcschoolspetition By Elana Shepert

Science World plans to reopen this summer: Here's what that might look like
S
cience World says it may reopen to the public later this summer and possibly sooner for summer camps after it closed doors in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In April, the waterfront science centre stated that it might be forced to permanently close its doors due to a lack of revenue during the pandemic. After temporarily closing on March 13, it lost a whopping 85 per cent of its revenue immediately. As of April 6, the organization had to temporarily lay off its part-time staff and that all of its full-time staff have taken at least a 20% pay cut. Janet Wood, President & CEO of Science World, tells Vancouver Is Awesome in an email that they are thoughtfully approaching its reopening as B.C. enters Phase 2. "As we’re an interactive science centre, part of our work is re-engineering the experience at Science World to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors, while maintaining the fun of a visit to our facility," she writes. "For example, we are looking at doing more live demos and science shows so that we can keep the entertaining and educational interactive experience that people know and love about us, while maintaining physical distancing."
Wood says that the organization anticipates that it will be open at some point during the summer. She adds that it is closely monitoring and following the advice of the experts at the BC Health Authorities and following the lead of other science centres across the country. "When we do open we will adhere to new cleaning protocols and physical distancing guidelines," Woods explains. "We are also exploring the possibility of opening sooner just for summer camps. This could be a really helpful way for us to support our community at this time as parents start to go back to work. "We know many people are eager to get back to Science World and we’re so grateful for the ongoing support from our community. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back when it’s safe to do so and when we can ensure our visitors will have the same kind of wonderful experience they’ve had in the past."
