A maximum building height of 12.4 metres (41 feet) is proposed and an overall density of 0.60 FSR is maintained.

D. 1059-1075 Nelson Street To rezone 1059-1075 Nelson Street from RM-5B (Multiple Dwelling) District to CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District, to permit the development of a 60-storey residential building. A building height of 178.5 metres (585.5 feet) and a floor space ratio (FSR) of 24.7 are proposed.

S

omething that can’t be denied is that our province’s diversity is what has resulted in it becoming as great or, that is, awesome - of a place as it is to live.

From our first governor, James Douglas of Creole descent (1858), to the Louie family who were early entrepreneurs (1903) and are still successfully running businesses such as London Drugs and IGA, to Asa Johal who started Terminal Forest Products (1965) and became a philanthropic leader, there are countless others who have led the way in our communities.

Except for Indigenous people, we all came to Canada from different places in the world. We have all worked (and continue to work) together to build a better province. There have been millions of unnamed, unsung contributors to our society from every corner of the world, for more than 150 years. For the majority of that time, we’ve lived together in harmony, supporting each other and our myriad cultures.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen a rise in race-based violence over the past couple of months, since COVID-19 popped up. For some reason, dimwitted racists have taken the opportunity to not only flaunt their idiotic views in public, but to take violent action against people who don’t look like them. Specifically, people of Asian descent have been getting attacked in startling numbers.

It’s disheartening, but it’s up to all of us to oppose this kind of garbage if we want things to get better. We can’t let a few knuckle-draggers undo what we have done since the founding of this province, and that is live differently, together.

It may seem like a small thing, and that your singular voice doesn’t matter, but we need to collectively demonstrate that diversity is a fundamental value that our society shares.

B.C. sign language interpreter Nigel Howard is a "real life superhero" to this 4-year-old who is deaf This came as a shock to us and, as with the majority of parents of deaf children, he was the first deaf person we had ever met.

As new parents we were already filled with worry and anxiety about the usual things like, is he eating enough? Is he sleeping enough? (Will we ever sleep again!?)

Now with the added layer of having to learn how to parent a deaf child, it was safe to say we were overwhelmed at the very least.

Within hours of Iliyan’s identification as a deaf child we received a call from the BC Early Hearing Program checking in on us, how we as parents were feeling. Our coordinator also provided some information and assured us that we would have access to information, speech-language pathologists, other experts and, most importantly, other parents, since we had some important choices ahead of us as we learned how to parent a deaf child.

We had the good fortune of meeting [Dr. Bonnie Henry's sign language interpreter] Nigel Howard a few years ago, when Iliyan had recently received his cochlear implants and was communicating using both sign and spoken English. Iliyan adored meeting him, and still remembers one of the signs that Nigel taught him - the sign for “boot”.

Iliyan took to signing right away. In fact, he signed his first word at 9 months. To our dismay, his first word was neither “mum” nor “dad”, but “light”. We decided as a family that it would be important for Iliyan to meet as many Deaf and hard of hearing children and adults, who choose to communicate in a number of ways, in order to normalize his deafness and hearing equipment,

Fast forward to the last few months, Iliyan is now 4 and a half and seeing Nigel signing alongside Dr. Bonnie Henry has made him so proud to be deaf. When we purchased a few “Listen to Nigel” posters, Iliyan immediately asked that we hang one in his room, and post one outside our house.

Having Nigel – and his poster – has given Iliyan a real life superhero that he looks up to and can identify with, especially in a world where we don’t often get to see Deaf people in prominent positions in media, using ASL.

Separated by the border closure, B.C. residents are reuniting with their American loved ones at Peace Arch Park

hen B.C.’s provincial parks reopened to the public for day use earlier this month, a loophole for cross-border couples did, too.

Peace Arch Provincial Park in Surrey is unique from B.C.’ss other provincial parks in that it’ss a shared territory with our southern neighbours, located along the westernmost edge of the world’s longest un-militarized border. s part of an ongoing rally cry and fundraising efforts in support of the Vancouver Aquarium, a number of prominent Vancouver and B.C. chefs are selling seafood chowders with proceeds going to the struggling venue.

Among the participating chefs and restaurants are Vancouver's acclaimed Alex Chen at Boulevard (BLVD Signature Clam Chowder with Maple Cured and Smoked Sablefish); Welbert Choi at Forage (hand-shredded BBQ Duck and BC Scallop Chowder); Amanda Cheng and Makoto Ono at Mak N Ming (Kitsilano Beachside Sake Kasu Rasor Clam Chowder); and Rob Clark at The Fish Counter (Fish Counter Chowders).

Launched May 22 and running until June 8 (World Oceans Day), the campaign has already enjoyed tremendous success, with some restaurants reporting they’ve sold out of fresh batches of the chowder, and more chefs and restaurants coming on board with their chowders this week.

Chowder and the Vancouver Aquarium go hand-inhand. Their annual Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown event in Vancouver and in other Canadian cities is a major draw, with tickets selling out fast each year.

Vancouver's Little India or “Punjabi Market” has been known since the 1970s as the centre of the South Asian community. The first Indo-Canadian immigrants from Punjab landed in Vancouver around 1890. They settled in Kitsilano near First Avenue and Burrard Street working in lumber mills and at construction sites throughout the Lower Mainland.

Mayor approves $95,000 social media hire, accuses reporters of "setting up a false narrative"

ast week we saw a side of mayor Kennedy Stewart that we hadn't yet been exposed to since he was sworn in to office in November of 2018.

The unflappable-until-now mayor got testy and nearly lost his cool while answering questions from reporters who had gathered for a press conference. In it, he had hoped to talk to them about how the City is working to help the local economy recover after being devastated due to COVID-19.

As a bit of background, Global News had previously run a story about the City approving the future hire of a social media manager for $95,000, while cutting other pieces out of their budget.

About an hour prior to the mayor's press conference, the City issued a press release that threw considerable shade. Its subject contained the word "misinformation" and it said that "Some news outlets are sharing incorrect information regarding funding for a social media strategist at the City of Vancouver."

However nothing about the information reported was incorrect. It was simply a story they did not want to address.

One of the Global reporters who worked on the piece, Jordan Armstrong, was the first to the microphone. He asked why, after they cut the police budget and new funding for sanitation, they would go ahead and approve a future hire for a social media position which will pay $95,000.

Dodging the question, Stewart instead spent a full minute praising the work of all staff, then wandered off into

something about how he was on "international calls" with mayors in other cities about COVID-19. Trying to bring it back and stay on the message of the press conference, he then said that because of hardworking staff, the City is now in a "terrific position for economic recovery".

He ended his drawn-out non-answer with "I think our staff have done an amazing job, and we're lucky to have them," which is hard to argue with. But it has nothing to do with the optics of approving a $95,000 social media position for an already-bloated communications department, during a pandemic that has resulted in tough decisions around cuts.

Armstrong continued to press, asking for the exact number of employees working in comms for the City. Stewart dodged again by saying they've laid people off.

The answer to the question is 41 people work in that department.

That information is available on the City’s website.

Reporters are limited to two questions so, thinking he had effectively killed the story by avoiding it, the mayor refused to answer when presented with more queries. He said "Thank you for your persistence," and moved on to the next reporter.

That reporter was Armstrong's colleague, Nadia Stewart from Global News. She picked up where he left off, asking about the optics of approving the hire.

The mayor laughed, started his response to Nadia with a frustrated "Okay, look..." then mansplained that the city has 10,000 employees, a $1.6 billion budget, and that this is just one hire they were talking about.

He then accused the reporters of setting up a "false narrative," and that their "focus on one job is kind of a weird story to follow."

Somewhere in there he did finally attempt to justify the decision to make the fu f tu t re hire (which willl happen after their hiring freeze ends), saying that "Communicating with citizens is very important, especially when all of us are physically distancing."

He expressed that "For me, this is a red herring story."

The exchange was reminiscent of a media scrum we saw former Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson in during the dying days of his time in office. It was at a point where he had seemed to have had enough and was phoning it in for the most part.

After being pushed about the City's decision to spend $8,000 on a new logo that nobody liked, Robertson fired back at reporters with "This is the most absurd line of questioning I think I've ever heard in my eight years as mayor," before partly explaining why they spent the money and what they planned to do next.

He then issued a request to reporters to offer coverage of issues he would personally rather see in the news; "Please focus on the overdose crisis, on homelessness, affordable housing and the critical pieces, thank you very much," and walked off.

The work on the logo never continued, Robertson sailed off into the sunset, and Stewart took his place, telling the media what he thinks they should be focusing on. Or shouldn't be, in this case.

fter 101 years, Army & Navy has shut their doors for good. but before the bargain chain says their final farewell, they will open the doors to one Metro Vancouver location - as well as one in Calgary - to hold what they're calling a "final, multimillion-dollar liquidation sale."

Army & Navy will launch the sale in New Westminster starting Thursday, June 4 at 10 a.m.

All departments will be featuring items for sale, at discounted prices. The company says this means that ladies' spring-summer apparel and shoes will be priced at 40% off, while other inventory such as men’s apparel, workwear, fishing and outdoor supplies, plus groceries will be offered at a 25% discount.

The veteran low-price department store announced earlier in May that they would be ceasing all operations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

First launched in 1919 in Vancouver, Army & Navy had five remaining stores in B.C. and Alberta, all of which they shuttered - initially for what they thought would be temporarily - in March.

"The economic challenges of COVID-19 proved insurmountable," says Army & Navy of their decision to close up shop.

certainly not unfamiliar with anti-Asian sentiment. But as Canadians who pride ourselves on our multiculturalism, we like to think such oppressive and disrespectful behaviour is over. It isn’t, and as recent events show, it comes to the fore in times of crisis.

As humans, we all have those moments of fear, insecurity, and feeling down.

But the worst and the best often occur simultaneously. Compassion and fear can co-exist. We can choose our response. For one thing, we can all do more to “be kind,” as Dr. Bonnie Henry constantly reminds us. Kindness, though, requires us to go beyond the surface. One way to do that is to put ourselves in others’ shoes to gain deeper empathy and understanding.

Take the H.Y. Louie Family Co. Limited story, for example. In 1903, H.Y. Louie founded a wholesale and retail grocery and farm-supply business in Vancouver to serve as an intermediary between Chinese market gardeners and white grocers. At the time, many employers would not hire Chinese, and many perceived H.Y. Louie as an intruder.

Today, against all odds, the company operates several important businesses in western Canada, including the IGA supermarkets and London Drugs.

This success came despite the many hardships experienced by family members — including institutional discrimination and economic recessions — and is bolstered by an enduring corporate commitment to maintaining a culturally diverse workforce.

commentary by Tzu-I Chung, curator of history at the Royal British Columbia Museum. Chung is a cultural and social historian and has led award-winning history and heritage projects.

During the Great Depression, while on a business trip to Hong Kong, H.Y. Louie wrote to his third son, with many earnest reminders about how to treat family and operate the business: “Treat your customers with trust and loyalty. When pursuing prosperity you must follow the laws of heaven. Don’t be afraid to be kind and charitable.” — March 30, 1934.

The virtues of loyalty, trust, kindness and charity have become the values by which the Louie family businesses continue to operate to this day.

During the Second World War, despite the reluctance of the armed forces to enlist them until late in the war, many Chinese Canadians, including members of the Louie family, volunteered to serve Canada to demonstrate their loyalty and “earn” the rights enjoyed by other Canadians, including the right to vote.

Quan Louie, a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, gave his life for Canada — shot down over Germany in January 1945. To judge any Canadian because of their ethnic background is an insult to all of Canada’s diverse families.

Let’s remember this time of crisis as one of our best moments. Don’t be afraid to be kind, in a way that does justice to the living, intercultural heritage that has informed our nation’s shared values. Be kind, in a way that goes a step further, to understand each other beyond ethnic, gender, class and other social identifiers, through their true stories.

Be kind and mark our current moment in a way that makes posterity proud.
