We have always been different together

A

few years back I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing then-95year-old Naidine Sims; the great granddaughter of some of the first Black settlers - former slaves - who moved to B.C. in 1858. We featured their story in an episode of our history TV show, BC Was Awesome.

Sims’ ancestors, the Starks, were drawn to our country, and specifically our province, a few years after buying their freedom from slavery in Missouri in 1852. They first headed to California, but despite it being deemed a “free state”, the laws at that time made them feel like they were “still in slavery country”, as she put it.

At around the same time, B.C.’s first governor, James Douglas, was hoping to increase the population. A man of Creole descent, he actively encouraged people of all ethnicities to settle here, and the word traveled.

The Starks heard Douglas’ call, and so they walked here from California. Yes, they walked, and they first wound up in Victoria

Since the establishment of our province, people of all ethnicities, cultures, and faiths have contributed to making it an awesome place to live.

In order to keep it that way, together we need to continue to make this as welcoming of a place for everyone as governor James Douglas originally intended back in 1858.

Black Canadians say racism here is just as harmful as in the United States

he death of George Floyd in Minnesota following a police intervention has spurred massive protests in both Canada and the United States and societal soulsearching on the need to fight racism on both sides of the border.

But while many Canadian leaders have denounced the death of Floyd, who died in Minneapolis after pleading for air while a white police officer pressed a knee on his neck, his death has also prompted some public figures to claim systemic racism doesn't exist in Canada as it does in the United States.

Nelson, who works with Montreal's Jamaica Association, believes firmly that what happened to Floyd could have happened anywhere, including Canada.

She said most black people, including herself, can tell stories about being followed by sales staff while shopping, being treated differently depending on whether they're wearing business attire or clothes perceived as "ethnic," and being told to "go home."

The Canadian Press asked several black Canadians to share their experiences with racism and their thoughts on systemic discrimination in both countries.

Nelson, 49, bristles at Quebec Premier Francois Legault's statement this week that there is no systemic discrimination in Quebec.

Newton, a Vancouver-based actor and writer, says he's experienced racism both in that city and in Montreal, where he grew up.

He recalled one time when he was pulled over by police when driving home from an intramural basketball game with three black friends and one of their girlfriends, who is white. He said he was initially confused when police started flashing their flashlights and demanding ID.

"Why is it harder for people of colour to find a decent apartment, or housing or places to live?" she asked.

"Why is it that when racialized people move into certain neighbourhoods, certain people start moving out of that neighbourhood? Those are the questions that those individuals who say there's no systemic discrimination in Quebec need to ask."

"As a black and an Indigenous woman, I don't have the privilege to think of the police force as a helpful resource," says the burlesque performer known by her stage name Lou Lou la Duchesse de Riere.

"I've been pulled over with an ex, and then I was accused of being a prostitute once my band card was taken as an ID. I was 17 years old. I've been detained at the border and accused of smuggling cigarettes when I was 18, and I've been directly assaulted by police when I was 30."

She said she regularly has her accomplishments diminished and accredited to some form of affirmative action. "I was accepted to McGill's law faculty when I was 19, straight out of (junior college) without a bachelor's degree. It's really hard. I was told by a lawyer, a potential colleague and employer, that the only reason was because it looked good for the university."

Jiles, 32, says that while working in clubs, she has been exoticized and targeted as an Indigenous woman and has repeatedly watched as black people are not let in, are kicked out or are given poor service.

Eventually, Newton said, the officer leaned in to ask the sole white passenger if she was OK. "She's confused. She's like 'Yeah, what are you talking about?' " he recalled. "The cop says 'You're here on your free will?' "

"Racism is more in your face in the U.S., and I feel like here (in Canada) it's insidious and it intrinsically hides into our policies, into our legal system, into all of our infrastructures," she said.

He said he then realized what was happening.

"We have just as much work to do in our own backyard, and this lie, this narrative that things are so much better here, it's a form of racism. It's a form of blindness."

Asian grocery giant suspends temperature checks at their stores

W

hile many businesses have adopted temperature checks at their stores, one Asian grocery giant has decided to suspend these checks as of this week.

All T&T Supermarket locations across

Canada, including those in Metro Vancouver, will be suspending temperature checks at the door after finding the numbers “inaccurately high.”

According to Tina Lee, CEO of T&T Supermarkets, the high temperature numbers were a result of customers lining up outside of the grocery store on a hot weekend in Toronto.

“We don’t want to be turning away customers that are registering a high temperature just because they have been standing outside in the heat, or just coming in after some outdoor activity,” said Lee in a statement.

Company employees will still undergo mandatory temperature checks, and shoppers are asked to still wear masks when entering the store.

T&T was one of the first stores that implemented temperature check protocols with the intention to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in April.

The Grouse Grind is opening for the 2020 season this month Calling all hiking enthusiasts!

Metro Vancouver has announced that the Grouse Grind Trail, otherwise known as "Mother Nature's StairMaster," is slated to reopen Monday, June 22. However, hikers will have to keep a few things in mind before they venture to the mountain.

In a release, Metro Vancouver notes that, "It will be a different hiking experience than usual."

For one, hikers are expected to stay two meters apart from other people as much as possible. And, if you want to return via the Skyride, you'll need to reserve in advance online with Grouse Mountain.

The 2.9-kilometre trail offers an intense, upward climb up the mountainside with a staggering elevation gain of 2,800 feet. It takes the average hiker an hour and a half to complete the trail, and there are 2,830 stairs on it.

If hikers choose not to return via the Skyride, they may use the BCMC Route. For this route, you should consider that it will be two hours of hiking on a steep, rough trail. Some snow still remains on the top 1/4 portion of the route. Wear hiking boots and appropriate

clothing. Carry water and a snack.

A bear has also been seen on a regular basis on the BCMC Route. Metro Vancouver asks that hikers remember to be bear aware and give bears respect and distance. Do not attempt to get close to a bear or feed one.

Also, remember to pack out all your garbage (including organic waste such as apple cores and banana peels).

If you do encounter a bear: • Do not run.

• Face the bear and back away slowly.

• Stay calm.

• Talk to the bear in a confident voice.

• Make sure the bear has a clear exit.

• He or she is likely just as anxious to get out of there as you are.

Be sure to check current weather, terrain, and wildlife conditions prior to embarking on a hike. In addition, make sure that you know your physical limitations, tell someone where you are going, bring enough food and water, wear appropriate clothing, and never hike alone. Don’t attempt dangerous poses for photographs.

This Halloween last one for residents to set off fireworks in Vancouver

Pete Fry who argued fireworks are dangerous, negatively affect the environment and can scare domestic and wild animals.

The bad news is it will likely be the last October for exploding noisemakers and sparklers, according to a city staff report that goes before Vancouver council this week.

Fry also said fireworks can trigger post traumatic stress disorder in survivors of gun violence, refugees from war-torn countries and veterans.

The move shouldn’t come as a surprise since council decided in November 2019 to ban the sale and use of fireworks to and by the general public on Halloween.

Data compiled by Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services in 2018 showed the average fire loss to property related to consumer fireworks per year was $379,000 over the last 12 years.

The report recommends council enact a bylaw to ban consumer fireworks and allow bylaw officers to ticket people who continue to use fireworks the day after Halloween.

Vancouver remains one of the only cities in the region that has not officially banned fireworks.

The staff report rtt pointed out, however, that the ban cannot be enforced in other municipalities or First Nation reserv rvations v that allow the sale of fireworks to the public.

Rap icon Ice T calls Vancouver anti-racism protest 'powerful' The beloved musician shared a tweet by @xunholyx that shows two perspectives of the massive crowd that gathered in the Jack Poole Plaza on Vancouver's Waterfront. He captions, "Vancouver! Powerful."

Ice T has been sharing Black Lives Matter images from across the globe on his Twitter feed,

which include everything from massive crowds to compelling signs to a man who uses crutches getting on the ground to take a knee in solidarity with the movement.

People of all ages came out in droves to participate in the Vancouver demonstration, which came in response to the killing of George Floyd by a white Minnesota police officer last month, and in solidarity with widespread protests sparked by the incident around the globe. All four officers involved

in Floyd’s death have now been charged.

In addition to the longstanding, systemic racism experienced by community members who are Black, Indigenous and people of colour, Canadian rallies have also been protesting the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a black woman who died after falling off her balcony. Family members previously claimed Toronto police officers pushed her.

A. Regulation Redesign – Amendments to Zoning & Development By-law, Official Development Plans and Parking By-law To amend the Zoning and Development By-law and several Official Development Plans to update and simplify the City’s land use regulations and related land use documents, and to make them more user-friendly.

In combination with permit processing improvements, these amendments will help to simplify, clarify, and streamline permit review.

Various housekeeping amendments are also proposed for the Parking By-law.

T

he COVID experience has resulted in a general increase of virtual care usage between clinics and patients.

There are many reasons a patient might be unable to make an in-person appointment with their health care provider, but the rise of virtual visit technology is removing barriers by allowing patients to stay home and use a laptop, or other electronic device, to see their care provider in real time via video chat.

Expanding the use of virtual visits is just one of the ways

Providence Health Care is embracing digital health and committing to patient-centred care. Secure virtual visit platforms such as Skype for Business have been implemented at more than 15 outpatient clinics across the organization, giving patients a convenient alternative for appointments that don’t require a physical exam.

‘Patients have really loved it’ Cardiac electrophysiologist Dr. Zachary Laksman has been doing virtual visits for several years. As Director of the St. Paul’s Hospital Atrial Fibrillation Clinic and the

B.C. Inherited Arrhythmia Program, his patients live all over the province.

For many, the time and expense required to travel to Vancouver to see him is prohibitive. With virtual visit technology, he can coordinate and review tests with his patients in the comfort of their own homes.

“People are inviting the physician and the clinical team into their living room and just having a discussion,” Dr. Laksman says. “Patients have really loved it. They’re very comfortable in their home, their kids are around, they don’t have to go out of their way. It’s really worked for them.”

Because he specializes in an inherited heart rhythm condition, he often needs to see families together. This is far easier to coordinate when video conferencing is an option. Meanwhile, the flexibility and ease of scheduling that virtual visit technology provides means quicker turnaround in terms of patient management.

Tip: treat a virtual visit like an in-person visit Dr. Sarah Cockell, a psychologist in the Heart Centre at St. Paul’s Hospital, started offering virtual visits about a year ago. The technology has allowed her to provide uninterrupted care to patients who aren’t able to see her in person due to mobility issues, long distance, or feeling unwell after surgery.

“It provides that flexibility so when people are just going about life – be it a vacation, be it a sudden move, be it work that doesn’t allow them to take time off – the video option suits them quite well,” she says.

Not without challenges Virtual visits have been taking place at Providence for several years now. Initially patients were required to go to a telehealth room in their community for the appointment.

As with any new initiative, there are challenges. Not all patients or health care providers are comfortable with new technology. Plus, it’s a lot of work to ensure the online connection is solid and the cameras and microphones are working on both ends. These are all things that are being addressed as the initiative expands and new opportunities arise. At the same time, different virtual visit platforms are also being trialled to make it easier to connect with patients in their homes.

“New technologies are emerging on a constant basis,” says Margot Wilson, Corporate Director of Shared Care and Virtual Health at Providence, “At the same time, patients are requesting timely and convenient care closer to home. While there will always be a need for face-to-face visits, we’re committed to expanding the use of virtual visits as we position ourselves as a modern, patient-centred health care provider.”

Metro Vancouver couple recounts COVID-19 travel nightmare

t least you are not trapped in a thirdworld country.”

That’s the response a Tsawwassen couple received from an embassy official in Hawaii as they tried for two months to get back home.

Caught up in the COVID-19 pandemic, what was a wonderful, annual trip for retirees Maryanna and Steve Carlsen, turned into an anxiety-filled travel nightmare trying to get out of Maui and back to Canada.

“We were stuck for two months because we couldn’t get a flight out. They cancelled our flight eight times,” said Maryanna. “They were cancelled several times by several airlines. I called the Federal Government and someone contacted me from Honolulu and I believe it was someone from the Australian embassy working with Canadian officials and she said the choice was to buy another ticket from another airline.”

Maryanna said she told the officials that they had already bought tickets with WestJet and Air Canada.

SENIORS’ WEEK JUNE 1-7

Steve’s medication was running out…all raising their anxiety levels of the situation they were in.

“You just can’t go to a doctor and get a prescription refilled and since our insurance expired, we couldn’t get it renewed because we were out of the country,” she said. “It’s very expensive. We were desperate. We were in so much stress because we had no idea when we could leave.”

Eventually the couple was able to get back to their home on May 9 after getting through the quarantine protocols.

“We tried in March to get back and then all the cancellations with the flights,” she said. “You would think as a Canadian citizen you would get some help. There were so many people stranded in Maui…we were not the only ones… all were Canadian citizens. Why could they [government] not get a plane together and get us out? Talk to the airlines and make sure all the Canadians are on one plane and they are able to leave. They [government] should have done something.

“You think that being a Canadian is a privilege, which I still do, but you pay taxes and your government should do something for you.”

Now the couple is out all that additional money for the cancelled flights and the extra rent costs.

“We plan these trips very frugally,” she said. “I felt very disappointed in our government. We could not predict COVID-19, no one could, but it kind of opens your eyes to certain things.”

dditional financial help for seniors will be arriving the week of July 6, accorrding to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Vietnamese restaurant beloved by Bourdain opening soon in Vancouver "The food, culture, landscape and smell; they’re all inseparable," said the late food icon Anthony Bourdain of his time in Vietnam. "It just seemed like another planet; a delicious one that sort of sucked me in and never let go."

The chef, writer, and TV show host made several treks to Vietnam for his shows, exploring the Southeast Asian nation through its food, culture, and people. One visit for a 2009 episode of his show "No Reservations" found Bourdain at a Ho Chi Minh City food stall called The Lunch Lady.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism describes the street food spot and one of its famed dishes: "The famed Lunch Lady (23 Hoang Sa Street, Phuong Da Kao, District 1, HCMC) is sequestered in an unassuming alleyway on the northern edge of District 1.

Hoards of Vietnamese business folk and now, tourists, meet here around lunch time."

"Snag a table close to the mobile kitchen where Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh hurriedly orchestrates the operation. Sitting at one of these tables affords the diner a theatrical performance complete with the sounds of cleavers pounding against wooden boards and men barking out orders, fanning worn out Vietnamese dong to relieve themselves of Ho Chi Minh’s oppressive heat," reads the tourism entity's Bourdainbased food guide to the country.

At The Lunch Lady, Bourdain ate the dish of the day, bún bò hue, with its dark broth "riddled with a generous amount of delectables such as fatty pig trotter, slices of

beef brisket, and hefty log of cha lua, a type of Vietnamese sausage. Strong citrus notes come through from the broth long-simmered with stalks of lemongrass."

Vancouverites will soon need to travel no further than 1046 Commercial Drive to try out this and more dishes, where The Lunch Lady is branching out to serve its street foodstyle authentic Vietnamese eats.

The Lunch Lady has been reworking the East Vancouver space that was previously the Vietnamese-Thai Five Elements Café.

They describe their venture from Vietnam to Vancouver as a journey "of passion and collaboration." That collaboration includes the family behind Five Elements, who have been working to renovate and re-launch their space for several months.

Restaurateur Michael Tran travelled to his home country of Vietnam in 2012, and says his initial visit to the Lunch Lady stall there would change his life forever. Tran says a fresh bowl of noodle soup he enjoyed at the stand - crafted by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh - that connected him to his homeland.

Tran brought his mother, Victoria, of Five Elements, to visit The Lunch Lady, and the

trio formed a bond. Ultimately the plan to bring The Lunch Lady's stories and food to Vancouver emerged.

On the menu: "Lunch Lady classics and new Vietnamese inspired cuisines."

You'll find, of course, the bún bò hue immortalized by Bourdain on TV, along with items like bún thái (Thai-style noodles), bún mắm (a thick seafood soup with seafood), and bánh canh cua (sticky noodles with crab), among others. They've teased taste buds with photos of their prawn and pork skewers, and garlic noodle dishes too.

Their traditional Vietnamese brunch will be available daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can also expect some neighbourhood favourites from Five Elements to make a lasting return on their lunch menu. The dinner menu will feature dishes that include a variety of shareable “family style” bites made with authentic and local ingredients. Additionally, the bar program will feature a freshly minted cocktail menu that reintroduces some classic drinks with a Southeast Asian twist.

As they gear up for the long-anticipated opening, Lunch Lady is keeping busy honing their take-out skills, and recently teamed up with Feed the Frontline Canada to serve meals to staff at St. Paul's Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital.

Speaking of take-out, The Lunch Lady has just announced they officially launch to-go offerings from a limited menu as of June 15. To follow, dine-in service, featuring the full menu, is slated to begin July 1.

CHAN, Lily (Mee Toy) September 10, 1929 − May 22, 2020 Lily Mee Toy Chan (née Chow) passed away peacefully at the age of 90 in Vancouver. She is survived by her son, Steven; daughter, Sue Tench, and husband, Richard; and grandchildren, Hannah and Griffin. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd, and her beloved sister, Mee Kam Chow Woo, with whom she was very close.

Lily was born in Pak On Lay, Hoiping, Guangdong, China. She moved to Hong Kong in 1949, where she trained as a seamstress. Lily immigrated to Canada in 1952, under sponsorship of her father, who believed in her abilities. She first moved to Duncan, BC, before settling in Vancouver, where she continued working as a seamstress for Seacan and Jantzen.

Lily is most remembered for her strength and un− wavering drive to be independent. Her family was extremely precious to her, and her children and grandchildren were her greatest accomplishments.

They made her "very happy," as she would often remark. She will be greatly missed.

A private ceremony was held.
