A

nother demonstration in support of the Black Lives Matter movement is set to take place in Vancouver this week.

Black Vancouver is hosting a “Juneteenth” march Friday, June 19, in solidarity with continued demonstrations being held across the continent and around the world.

The event is set to begin at Jack Poole Plaza at 4 p.m.

“Following the two recent Black Lives Matters protests, one at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the other at the Olympic Cauldron, many members of the community have advocated for a march in unity,” Black Vancouver organizers stated in a media release.

“It is not only emotionally expressive but holds immense power, history and tradition, and is a powerful tool to create change and express community values."

The event will mark “Juneteenth,” also known kn n ass Freedom Day, Emancipation Day or Jubilee Day. The annual commemoration dates back to 1865, when slaves in Texas ass were first informed of their freedom and the end of the Civil War, approxi ximately i tw two w years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The PNE is holding a drive-thru BBQ event for Father's Day

F

irst there were the Mini-Donuts, now it's time for a meaty fest. For their second drive-thru micro-event, the Fair at the PNE is holding a "Car-B-Q" that's all about some of their most popular rib-slingers.

Taking place June 18 through 21 at Hastings Park, the advanced-purchased event will feature two concessionaires from other provinces, as well as two local vendors. All of the food must be pre-ordered, and you'll drive through and pick up your eats. Plus, as a special treat, the PNE hopes to "get dad’s engine running" courtesy the firstever indoor drive-through car show, featuring classic, vintage, and muscle cars, and hot rods from across the region.

These drive-through mini events are how the PNE is coping with having to curb their usual Fair operations due to COVID-19. With gatherings limited to fewer than 50 people and mandated physical distancing measures, organizers have gotten creative with how they can still bring people together, as well as support many of the Fair's vendors.

Now, back to the grub. Selling eats will be

Website lets you book and list campsites on private property across B.C.

W

ere you one of the thousands of British Columbians who struggled to book a summer campsite when BC Parks' Discover Camping reservation system reopened last month?

Fret not - if you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors this year but are frustrated by the constant battle for campsites, there’s an alternative to B.C.’s provincial parks you might want to consider.

Since launching last year, Campertunity is hopping aboard the shared economy-trend to offer up new spaces for campers, and a new revenue generator for landowners - think Airbnb, without the bnb. Essentially, it aims to provide “a solution” to the problems associated with too many campers and not enough campsites.

“Booking a campsite on government campgrounds has become so aggressive and competitive that it has led to reservation re-sales, undue stress, and a need for change,” wrote Campertunity’s co-founders in a release. “This is why we created Campertunity, an online platform that enhances camping experiences by allowing private landowners to list their land for

campers to book.”

While campsites are available to book from coast to coast, the vast majority appear to be concentrated here in B.C. Prices range from $10 per night all the way up to $125 per night, though most sites appear to be priced around $30. The type of accommodations available, meanwhile, range from an urban garden to farmland to secluded oceanfront retreats. “Any space that’s big enough to pitch a tent,” is suitable land to list, according to the business’ website.

Prospective property-listers are encouraged to check with their respective municipalities regarding camping laws before welcoming guests.

Picky campers can also filter their search to include only sites that offer their necessary amenities, whether that’s flush toilets, RV hookups or pet-friendly spaces.

Mental Health Awareness How living with mental illness has given me the tools to cope during the COVID-19 Pandemic

I

am a voice hearer, and living with mental illness has not been easy, but, through the support of my mental health team, I am now managing my illness and able to live a rich and fulfilled life.

Being a voice hearer means that I hear voices in my mind that others can’t.

here and now instead ruminating about the potential risks of these trips.

I do breathing meditation and concentrate on my breathing to ease the stress of the current crisis situation if it does get too much.

My lived experience also enables me to make a positive difference to others in my role as Peer Support Worker for Coast Mental Health, and this in turn has given me confidence and a support system.

Staying busy

My experiences with being hospitalized in locked psychiatric wards also help me deal with being cooped up inside so much right now. I watch TV and movies, listen to music, read books and do daily chores to keep myself busy so the days don't drag on with nothing to do but worry about getting sick. I can also do artwork, write or play musical instruments to stay occupied.

My experiences developing coping strategies have helped me tremendously in dealing with the current health crisis we are all facing across the globe.

My coping tool box keeps me from too much worry, anxiety or fear and I would like to share it as I think it would be helpful to other folks who are struggling right now.

Routine

It's important to establish a daily routine in these troubled times rather than sit around in pajamas all day watching too much unsettling news coverage.

I start my day at the same time every morning, take care of my personal hygiene and plan my day even if I am mostly staying indoors.

I make sure to go to bed at the same time every night and get a good night's sleep so I am well rested and mentally sharp.

Connection

Exercise

It's important to reach out to friends and family and stay connected to people even if we can't meet in person right now. I am also in regular contact with my mental health team to stay healthy and well.

It's also important to eat healthy, nutritious meals and I take vitamins and supplements to ensure that I am getting the best daily requirements for my mind and body.

I hope that these tools and strategies will be helpful to folks who are struggling right now with worry, anxiety and fear. Stay safe, stay healthy and God Bless!

Mental Health Awareness Helping kids cope, virtually

T

he BC Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) has released a new series of videos to help children cope during stressful times.

The 10-video series, geared towards children aged eight to 12, aims to explain to youth what mental illness is, healthy ways to express feelings and take care of themselves, and coping strategies for kids of parents who struggle with mental illness.

“During this time of physical distancing, we at BCSS are always looking for different ways to get tools and information into the hands of family members,” said the society’s CEO Faydra Aldrige.

“These videos are one way we are adjusting our Kids in Control program to reach children and youth with parents or siblings who live with mental illness.”

Each video highlights different topics, including how to make a self-care toolbox and what “caring for you” means.

“So many of us are experiencing mental health challenges during these unprecedented and unpredictable times, and when one person in a family is struggling, everyone — including children — can be affected,” said Judy Darcy, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

“These videos are a great way to empower young people to express how they are feeling, learn how to care for themselves, and ask for help when they need it now and throughout their lives.”

The society’s Kids in Control program was created to help children and youth to better understand their family members’ mental illness, and that they are not the cause of it.

Founded in 1982, BCSS is a non-profit organization supporting families and providing education to the public about schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.

Coast Mental Health announces July as Courage To Come Back Month as pandemic cancels annual awards and fundraising gala

ourage To Come Back Month will honour five recipients and raise funds for critical community programming

To celebrate the courageous achievements of this year’s Courage To Come Back Award recipients, Coast Mental Health is today announcing they are dedicating the month of July to Courage. During Courage To Come Back Month, the stories of five British Columbians who have overcome extraordinary adversity to come back and give back to their own communities will be celebrated.

Every Thursday in July, Coast Mental Health will announce a recipient online and on their social media channels in one of five categories - Youth, Mental Health, Addiction, Medical and Physical Rehabilitation.

Each year, over 1,500 people gather at the Vancouver Convention Centre to celebrate the annual Courage To Come Back Awards. Due to the global pandemic, this year’s annual in-person awards gala, which is also a critical fundraising event for the foundation, has been cancelled.

“We are dedicated to celebrating our incredible award recipients during this pandemic. Their stories are true journeys of bravery, resilience and strength in the face of adversity,” stated Lorne Segal, O.B.C., President of Kingswood Properties, Chair of the Awards for the past 15 years. “They will leave you inspired and optimistic and will, I hope, become a weekly dose of Courage in your lives.”

• The great outdoors: Even though some parks, beaches and trails have been closed, jogging or walking can be excellent cardiovascular exercises, as can taking a bicycle ride.

• Pushups, situps, planks and other body weight exercises can be done in the backyard.

• Remote sports: A game of catch, volleyball or racquet sports over fences, with limits on participants and social distancing.

Fundraiser launched for 8-year-old boy battling cancer

"This family has really gone through tremendous anguish and little Justice has suffered so much. My hope is that by sharing this story, the family can receive support to help take some pressure off and to allow Justice's mom, dad, and sister to stay in Vancouver full-time with him," says Mueller.

While Justice has gone through periods of remission over the years, Mueller says the cancer always returns. In the beginning of May this year, Mueller says Justice completed his most recent maintenance chemotherapy treatments; he also received an award for bravery.

Sadly, the relief was short-lived. Only days later, Mueller says the blood work came back irregular. Further tests confirmed that Justice's cancer had returned.

Now, the boy will need a bone marrow transplant, but first the cancer needs to be in remission.

The event describes itself as "a mini Dragon’s Den style event" where "awesomers," i.e. community members with an idea they could use some extra cash to fund submit those ideas (also known as awesome sh*t) in writing to a panel of "awesomites," i.e. the people who donate their hard-earned cash in exchange for a vote and a spot on the event's judging panel. "Awesomeites" must put $50 into the pot in order to earn a vote.

The top 10 idea submissions earn a spot at a "pitch night," where each presenter has five minutes to convince the judging panel to fund their idea. The event guarantees a minimum of $500 to the top idea, but the prize can grow much larger, depending on the amount of "awesomites" willing to dole out their hard-earned cash. One

COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, this year's pitch night will take place virtually, on Friday, July 3. The benefit of moving the event online? Attendees no longer need to be based in Vancouver, meaning anyone around the world is invited to throw their hat into the virtual ring.

The window for submissions is open for just over one more week, until June 20.

The top 10 "awesomers" will be notified on June 25 that they've earned a spot on pitch night, set to kick off at 6 p.m. PT on July 3.

TransLink giving out 15,000 branded face masks in Metro Vancouver TransLink is launching a new campaign aimed at encouraging the use of face coverings and non-medical masks on Metro Vancouver’s transit system. As part of the ‘Wearing is Caring’ campaign, more than 15,000 TransLink branded masks will be handed out at key transit hubs over the coming weeks.

Over the past decade, the Vancouverbased initiative has "given away thousands and thousands of dollars, with no strings attached, to encourage people to get off their asses and make their awesome shit happen," according to its website.

Need some inspiration? Ideas can range between anything from wanting to write a screenplay or wanting to feed the homeless to even wanting "to buy a goat to pull a sleigh."

"But really, submit anything you think is awesome," the event's website urges.

"What really matters when you submit your awesome sh*t, is that it sounds exciting." Those submitting an idea are also encouraged to mention how the cash would be used, if their idea is selected.
